The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Mr. Yomi Ogunnusi, has said the All Progressives Congress will win next year’s presidential election if it fields the Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, as its presidential candidate; and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate.

Ogunnusi, who represents Ifako/Ijaye Federal constituency at the lower chamber of the National Assembly, said a former Head of State, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari, should not emerge as the party’s presidential candidate but should remain as an elder statesman.

Also, he said a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, should not be involved in political administration but should stay on the sideline and play the “Obafemi Awolowo role as leader of the Yoruba.”

He said this during an interview with our correspondent shortly after presenting his scorecard to his constituents in Lagos, on Sunday.

He said, “In my opinion, Tambuwal should be the presidential candidate of the APC while Amaechi should be the Vice President. Tambuwal is not a tribalist, he knows all of us in the House up to our constituencies.”

The US State Department had to shut down its unclassified computer network over the weekend after evidence emerged that it could have been hacked, the US media reported late Sunday.

The State Department said in an email late Friday that the shutdown came as scheduled routine maintenance to its main unclassified network, and would impact email traffic and access to public websites.

But on Sunday reports emerged that there was evidence a hacker may have breached the security in portions of the system handling non-classified emails.
A senior official told the Washington Post there had been “activity of concern” but that none of the departments classified systems had been compromised.

If hacked, the State Department would be the latest in a series of government agencies to face cyber security breaches — though it is not clear if there is any link between the incidents.

Last week, the US Postal Service said hackers stole sensitive personal information from its employees in a large data breach this year, and got some customer data as well.

A USPS spokesman said the breach affected as many as 800,000 people who are paid by the agency, including employees and private contractors.

The statement said hackers also penetrated payment systems at post offices and online where customers pay for services.

The agency was working with the FBI and other law enforcement in an investigation.

And last month, the White House reported an intrusion in its unclassified computer network.

In the course of addressing the breach, some White House users were temporarily disconnected from the network, an official said, but the computers and systems were not damaged.

The Washington Post quoted sources as saying hackers believed to be working for the Russian government were believed to be responsible.

TRADE Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, weekend, faulted the introduction of new N100 bank notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to commemorate Nigeria’s centenary celebration, saying it was ill-timed and wasteful.

In a statement by its President and Secretary General, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama and Musa Lawal respectively, TUC said “printing of new currency is usually a capital-intensive venture, and raises questions as to how the CBN hopes to grapple with the economic implications of redesigning and printing the new bank notes.

“Even the timing of the project is inappropriate, coming so late in the year when the economic hustle and bustle associated with Christmas and New Year are nigh.

“These, together with the heightened state of insecurity in parts of the country, the frenzy of political activities and electioneering campaigns towards the forthcoming 2015 elections, and the current slump in global oil prices make this the worst possible time for such drastic fiscal policy.”

FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Friday called for an end
to the away goals winner rule in clashes with two
matches.
Blatter said the rule favours clubs who play away in the
second leg because extra time can give an extra
opportunity to get a goal with double value.
“It is time to rethink the system,” Blatter said in a
column for the FIFA publication The Week.
Away goals are notably used in the Champions League
knockout stages and other European club competitions
where it was introduced in 1965.
Where two sides are level after two legs, the team which
has scored more goals away from home go through.
“The idea dates back to a time when away games were
often an adventure, involving journeys that could be long
and arduous,” said the 78-year-old FIFA leader.
“As well established as the rule is, it can be viewed
critically today,” because it favours the team playing
away in the 2nd leg.”
The system is no longer used in the semi-finals of
promotion play-offs in the English League. US Major
League Soccer and the CONCACAF Champions League
in the Americas only count goals scored in the 90
minutes of regulation time.
“Football has progressed since the 1960s so the away
goals rule may now be questioned,” said Blatter, who
did not propose an alternative.
