In what could be described as an early 'April Fool's Day' prank, a story originally posted by an obscure Somali website reported unnamed "activists" posted a memo on a social media site allegedly from the Eritrean government asking men to marry at least two wives due to shortage of men caused by war.

The document, which was written in Arabic, says the State of Eritrea called for all men in the country to marry at least two wives and the government assuring that it will pay for the marriage ceremonies and houses. It added any man or woman who oppose the decision “will face a life sentence”.

The story would have gone unnoticed had it not been for the Digital Standard, a popular tabloid Kenyan website, which published the story to a Kenyan audience that are very active on social media sites like Twitter.

Since their report, the Eritrea hashtag has been trending in Kenya and to a lesser degree, in Nigeria. Hundreds of tweets have been made, with many men from Kenya and Nigeria professing they will visit Eritrea to get their share of wives.

Many African countries still allow polygamy and some, including Kenya, have even enshrined it in their constitutions.

Amid the frenzy of tweets, many Eritreans pointed out that the bogus report goes against the recently instituted Penal Code of Eritrea, which practically makes polygamy illegal in the country:

1) Except where polygamy is recognized under civil law in conformity with tradition or religious usage, a person who, being tied by the bond of a valid marriage, intentionally contracts another marriage before the first union has been dissolved or annulled; or

(2) Any unmarried person who marries another he knows to be tied by the bond of an existing marriage, is guilty of bigamy, a Class 1 petty offence, punishable with a definite term of imprisonment of not less than 6 months and not more than 12 months, or a fine of 20,001 – 50,000 Nakfas, to be set in intervals of 2,500 Nakfas; or

(3) Limitations of criminal proceedings shall be suspended until such time as one of the marriages shall have been dissolved or annulled.

About Shortage of Men
Moreover, there is no shortage of Eritrean men. According to the CIA Factbook, Eritrea has the same male/female ratio as most countries.

Eritrea is no stranger to hoaxes. In 2013, Eritrea experienced what is now infamously known as the "Twitter coup", in which many credible news agencies falsely claimed a coup took place in Eritrea.

Similar hoaxes of President Isaias Afwerki's death by accredited Western journalists and activists have also been made in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Activists Say Eritrea Ordered All Men To Be Polygamous Or Risk ‘Life Imprisonment’

In what could pass as an ‘April Fool’s Day’ prank, activists have posted a memo on Facebook allegedly from the Eritrean government asking men to marry at least two wives due to an acute shortage of men occasioned by causalities during the civil war with Ethiopia.
A copy of a scanned decision of the Grand Mufti surfaced on the social media site on Thursday last week and showed the State of Eritrea calling for all men in the country to marry at least two wives and the government assuring that it will pay for the marriage ceremonies and houses.
The document, which could not be independently verified, says any man or woman who oppose the decision “will face a life sentence”.
A Standard report showed that activists had translated the memo — written in Arabic — to:
“Based on the law of God in polygamy, and given the circumstances in which the country is experiencing in terms of men shortage, the Eritrean department of Religious Affairs has decided on the following:
“First that every man shall marry at least two women and the man who refuses to do so shall be subjected to life imprisonment with hard labour.
“The woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another wife shall be punished to life imprisonment.”

More than 150,000 Eritrean soldiers were killed during the secession war from Ethiopia between 1998 and 2000. At the time Eritrea had about four million people.
Eritrea is one of Africa’s most authoritarian societies and has on several occasions been accused of “systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations,” by the United Nations, The Washington Post reported.
The country ranks that worst (189 out of 189) on the World Bank’s ease-of-doing-business index.
Many African countries still allow polygamy and some, including Kenya, have even enshrined it in their constitutions.
Instances of polygamy in many African countries have dropped significantly mainly due to increased urbanization, spread of Christianity and higher literacy levels. There are however still higher cases of multiple wives in Muslim communities across the continent.

The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have said they do not recognise the passports being issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The National Director of Information, MASSOB, Sunny Okereafor, had said two weeks ago that the passport was valid worldwide, adding that the travel document costs N5,000 while its renewal costs N2,000

He had said, “I assure you that the Biafran passport is valid. Except Nigeria, other countries of the world accept Biafran passport and allow our citizens to travel with it. In Europe, North and South America, Biafran passport is accepted. Nigeria is the only country that seizes Biafran passport. Go to neighbouring Ghana here, they will stamp the passport for you. Don’t be confused by the propaganda of the Nigerian government that there is nothing like Biafra passport.



“MASSOB appeals to Biafran citizens to procure their passport and use it to travel. If you doubt me, get a Nigerian passport while I have my Biafran passport; when we get to Europe, you will see who they will welcome than the other. Many people with the Nigerian passport have been repatriated, but have you heard of anybody with Biafran passport receiving such ill-treatment?”

However, our correspondent sent an email to the American consulate in Lagos to inquire from the US regarding the claim of MASSOB.

In his response, the Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the consulate, Frank Sellin, said, “The United States does not consider passports purporting to be from a Biafra entity to be a valid legal document for purposes of visa issuance.”

A similar response from the British Government was sent to The PUNCH via email.

The UK recalled that it did not support the disintegration of Nigeria during the 1967 Biafran War and had not changed its stance 49 years after.

A statement by the Press and Public Affairs Officer, British High Commission, Abuja, Mr. Joe Abuku, read in part, “The answer is unequivocally ‘no’. The UK does not recognise the so-called Biafran passport

“The position of the UK Government during the Biafran War is a matter of historical record. The UK Government’s position, which reflected the Charter of the Organisation of African Unity, was to recognise the borders laid down at independence.

“The Biafran War caused great suffering and the UK supported the reconciliation work that followed the conflict. The UK supports the territorial integrity of Nigeria and the Nigerian Government’s commitment to work for a secure and prosperous Nigeria for all Nigerians.”

I've often wondered, myself, how these bully kids are made up. I doubt there's any happy person going around looking for who to bully. Yet, this situation persists, year after year, decade after decade. Oh, we'll, I guess it's a fact of life. There will be bullies. And it's not just in schools too. It's everywhere.

Per the quantity, kids should have their own gangs too(no be criminal gang o). It's safer moving in packs for a looooot of reasons, not just fending off bullies. It's even important in helping a child understand more about life. Lone Rangering can be very counterproductive. Kids should learn to form alliances and negotiations at a young age.

Also, I think bullies should be reported but only as the last option . I'm pretty sure the kids involved were reported but the thing is what would they do, expel them for yabbing a classmate? For me, all the reporting and school punishmnt is useless if the child cannot handle it on their own, to a certain degree.

Please, let's not even talk about suicide due to online bullying. Anyone who kills themselves due to online bullying, doesn't deserve to be alive. How do you get bullied online to the point where you just shoot yourself? Can't you just log off or come back with a Jesus moniker? Abeg, that not an issue.
