It’s a shame, and a missed opportunity — not despite recent events but because of them. The Pentagon, in a break with recent tradition, will not host an Armed Forces Farewell tribute to President Donald Trump. It’s a shame, but not a surprise. Trump will leave office in disgrace, one week after the House voted a second time for his impeachment, two weeks after his supporters staged a deadly siege in the Capitol Building, six months after he dragged his Joint Chiefs chairman into a political firestorm, and after four years of nonstop assaults on truth. One of those disgraces is how he is ghosting the U.S. troops that he commanded. On Wednesday, the White House announced that this weekend Vice President Mike Pence “will deliver remarks to sailors on the Trump Administration’s historic foreign policy achievements at Naval Air Station Lemoore,” and then to the 10th Mountain Division, in Fort Drum, New York. Two senior defense officials confirmed to Defense One on Thursday that no military farewell is being planned for the commander in chief. Perhaps it’s for the best. Trump has used the military as a political prop since his first days in office, from signing MAGA hats for troops to giving partisan-fueled speeches in the heart of the Pentagon. American’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines have been made to stand at attention for Trump’s rants long enough. Besides, presidential visits are an honor and a headache for any military base that hosts them. The last time Trump appeared before troops was the Dec. 12 Army-Navy game at West Point. Before that, there was a brief Oct. 29 private visit with Army special operators at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as he passed through on the presidential campaign trail. https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2021/01/pentagon-wont-throw-traditional-farewell-ceremony-trump/171408/

Bronx state Sen. Luis Sepúlveda turned himself in to the NYPD Tuesday morning for allegedly assaulting his wife, according to police sources. Sepúlveda, 56, and his wife, Elizabeth Sepúlveda, filed separate reports accusing each other of assault during a domestic dispute on Saturday. The top Bronx Democrat – who chairs the state Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee – was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, sources said. Luis Sepúlveda was being processed Tuesday afternoon at Central Booking and is expected to appear before a judge. Sepúlveda’s relationship with his wife has been strained in the past, and she had previously sought an order of protection against him – which was later withdrawn, according to the Gotham Gazette. https://www.foxnews.com/us/ny-state-senator-luis-sepulveda-allegedly-assaulting-wife

New York Times: “Deutsche Bank, which has been Mr. Trump’s primary lender for two decades, has decided not to do business with Mr. Trump or his company in the future. Mr. Trump currently owes Deutsche Bank more than $300 million, which is due in the next few years.” “The bank has concluded that, short of forgiving the debt, it has no way to extricate itself from the Trump relationship before the loans come due.” “Another longtime financial partner of the Trumps, Signature Bank, also is cutting ties.” https://politicalwire.com/2021/01/12/banks-cut-ties-with-trump/ |
House Democrats will move forward with plans to remove President Donald Trump from office this week, starting with a resolution that calls on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi laid out the steps they plan to take in a letter to colleagues on Sunday. On Monday, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., will request unanimous consent for the “Raskin Resolution,” which calls on Pence to convene the Cabinet and activate the 25th Amendment. If they don’t receive consent – which is almost guaranteed since only a single Republican would have to object – Democrats will vote on the measure on Tuesday. "We are calling on the Vice President to respond within 24 hours" after the resolution is passed, Pelosi said. If Pence does act before that deadline, House Democrats will introduce articles of impeachment against Trump. "In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both," Pelosi wrote. "As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action." Pelosi told CBS News’ "60 Minutes" on Sunday that she prefers the 25th Amendment to impeachment. “Well, I like the 25th Amendment because it gets rid of him. He’s out of office,” she said. “But there’s strong support in the Congress for impeaching the president a second time.” Under the 25th Amendment, if the vice president and the majority of the Cabinet declare the president unfit for office, the vice president immediately becomes the acting president. Impeachment is a lengthier process. First, a simple majority in the House must vote in favor of charges. Then, the Senate must hold a trial to consider the charges. For the president to be removed, two-thirds of its members must vote to convict. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/01/10/politics-updates-donald-trump-impeachment-joe-biden-inauguration/6614719002/ |

Lehigh University’s Board of Trustees announced on Friday that it voted to rescind an honorary degree awarded to President Trump in 1988. The move came following the board's special session on Thursday, one day after a mob of the president’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in protest of his electoral loss. However, the board offered no other details. Lehigh President John Simon condemned the riots in Washington, D.C, in a statement this week, calling it a “violent assault on the foundations of our democracy — the abiding respect for the will of the people exercised in a free election and the peaceful transfer of power.” “I sincerely hope we can turn the sadness and anger that the lawlessness in our nation’s capital has evoked into motivation to make out nation more just,” Simon wrote. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/533362-lehigh-university-rescinds-trumps-honorary-degree-following-capitol

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao will resign in protest after a violent mob overran the Capitol after being incited by President Trump, a source with knowledge of her decision said Thursday. Chao would become the first Cabinet official, and the highest-ranking member of the administration, to resign in the wake of Trump’s incendiary rally and its violent aftermath on Wednesday. “Yesterday, our country experienced a traumatic and entirely avoidable event as supporters of the President stormed the Capitol building following a rally he addressed,” Chao wrote in a letter to Transportation Department staff, obtained by The Hill. “As I’m sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.” Senior Commerce cyber official resigns after Capitol riot White House aides head for exits after chaos at Capitol Her exit is a sharp rebuke of a president who has alienated even some of his closest supporters with his increasingly unhinged rhetoric. Chao has served as Transportation secretary since Trump’s inauguration. She served as Secretary of Labor for eight years under President George W. Bush. Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who spent much of Wednesday locked in an undisclosed and secure location under armed guard as Trump-backing rioters marauded through the Capitol. In her letter to employees, Chao said she would resign effective Monday. She said her team would continue assisting President-elect Joe Biden’s Transportation Secretary-designate, former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, with the transition. https://thehill.com/policy/transportation/533167-transportation-secretary-chao-resigns-in-protest
