The elephant in the room is the fact that government cannot adequately fund universities...and that has been the fact since 2012...when government had not paid N1.5 trillion of the three trillion funding promised to universities in the FG-ASUU agreement of 2009.

We run our universities at a loss. We expect our universities to be somehow like the big universities abroad, while we pay fees less than $300 yearly.

The problem is not ASUU, NASU, SSANU or even government. The problem is Nigerians who think they can get a Ferrari at the price of a bicycle. The minute we realise we cannot run our universities at a loss...and start allowing things like raised fees for example...then we will end up with some better universities.

Yes, my grandfather went to university cheaply...at a time when universities had less than 3000 students, there were only five or six of them, and the budget could cater for them. Now there are millions of students in 70 government owned universites, and the education budget can't even sustain primary schools adequately, talk less of universities.

I’m not going to go into the controversy. There is no problem with ASUU. I’m not going to go into any debate with anybody. All I know is that we have an understanding on what government would pay ASUU. We believe government would pay.

The management of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Kaduna State has fixed Monday, January 25th, 2021 as the date for the reopening of the institution for academic activities.

However, the Director of Public Affairs of the ABU, Mallam Auwal Umar, said in a statement that the resumption date was subject to review by the Federal Government.

The statement titled, ‘Ahmadu Bello University fixes January 25 for reopening,’ said the resumption date was approved by the Senate of the University at its 501st (Special) Meeting on Tuesday

The statement read, “The 2019/2020 academic session would be completed based on the adjusted calendar as approved by the Senate.

“The decision to reopen the University followed the suspension of ASUU strike, and the directive by National Universities Commission based on the advisory/clearance by the Presidential Taskforce on COVID- 19 that Universities could reopen as from 18th January 2021 under strict observance of COVID-19 protocols.”

It added that the reopening of the university would be on a phased basis.

The statement said the first phase of resumption would include, all graduating/final-year students, 100 and 200 levels students, all clinical medical students and all postgraduate students to be handled virtually using online ICT-supported blended teaching and learning arrangement.

The second phase, the statement added, would comprise all other non-graduating classes, 300 level in the case of four-year degree programme, 300 and 400 levels in the case of five-year degree programme as well as 300, 400 and 500 levels in the case of six-year degree programme.

It added that “It should be noted that all non-pharmaceutical COVID-19 protocols would be strictly observed anywhere on campus and every student must submit online an undertaking to abide by all the COVID-19 protocols both within and outside the Campus. Students who failed to complete and submit this form online will not be able to print their exams card.

“In addition, the University Management would, within the limit of its resources, support the University Health Service with the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a Holding Bay to ensure safe handling of any suspected cases.

“Equally, Management would take all necessary actions to strengthen the security architecture of the University and assure the University community of adequate safety and security.”

Twitter on Friday permanently suspended accounts for former national security adviser Michael Flynn, pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell and former 8kun administrator Ron Watkins as part of a crackdown on content linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

A spokesperson for the platform told The Hill that each of the individuals was banned in line with Twitter’s policy against harmful coordinated activity.

“We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behavior that has the potential to lead to offline harm, and given the renewed potential for violence surrounding this type of behavior in the coming days, we will permanently suspend accounts that are solely dedicated to sharing QAnon content,” the spokesperson added.

Flynn, President Trump's first national security adviser, has been one of the most visible QAnon supporters with close ties to the administration, posting a video of himself reciting one of its “oaths” last summer.

Powell, who led Trump’s unsuccessful attempts to overthrow the results of November’s election, was sued for $1.3 billion earlier Friday for spreading misinformation about Dominion Voting Systems.

Watkins was also a key figure spreading falsehoods about the voting company. His former platform hosts posts by "Q," the anonymous figure who posts the cryptic messages that serve as the foundation of the theory.

Snapchat suspended President Trump’s account indefinitely on Wednesday after the riots at the Capitol that left four dead and many injured.

"We can confirm that earlier on Wednesday we locked President Trump's Snapchat account," a Snapchat spokesperson told The Hill.

The spokesperson said the company is concerned about the rhetoric coming from Trump and the attacks on Democratic institutions.
This isn’t the first time Snapchat has stood against the president; the social media platform took Trump off its Discover feature back in June.

“We are not currently promoting the President’s content on Snapchat’s Discover platform. We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover," Snapchat said in a statement back in June as Black Lives Matter protests were occurring across the country. "Racial violence and injustice have no place in our society and we stand together with all who seek peace, love, equality and justice in America.”
