The Biden administration announced Thursday it will automatically erase student loan debt for more than 300,000 Americans with severe disabilities that leave them unable to earn significant incomes. The move will wipe out more than $5.8 billion in debt, according to the Education Department, and it marks the start of a broader overhaul of a program that has been criticized for having overly burdensome rules. “We’ve heard loud and clear from borrowers with disabilities and advocates about the need for this change and we are excited to follow through on it,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. The federal government offers student debt relief for people who are “totally and permanently disabled” and have limited incomes. But the current rules require them to submit documentation of their disability and undergo a three-year monitoring period to prove they’re earning little pay. https://apnews.com/article/education-32f68a2779c8f3366e7c7499a1f39afc

President Biden addressed the nation on the U.S. pullout of Afghanistan and said he “stands squarely” behind his decision to pull out U.S. troops. Said Biden: “Our mission in Afghanistan was never supposed to be nation-building. Our mission was preventing a terrorist attack on the United States.” He added: “The truth is that this did unfold more quickly than we anticipated. So what happened? Afghan political leaders gave up and fled the country.” Biden also said that after 20 years of war, he learned there was never a good time to withdraw forces. https://politicalwire.com/2021/08/16/biden-addresses-the-nation-on-afghanistan/

No fewer than 50 persons were injured and property worth millions of naira destroyed by unknown persons in Isuaniocha community in Awka North local government area of Anambra State As a result, the people of the area have cried out to Governor Willie Obiano and the federal government for help. The incident, according to sources happened few days ago in the sleepy community As at the time of filing this report, no arrest had been made as the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said the matter had not been reported to the command He said he would make further enquiries into the matter, adding that the command would not tolerate lawlessness. However, The Nation gathered that the incident had caused fear and panic among residents in the community. An eye witness, Peace Patrick, who works in one of the guest houses destroyed, said it was like a war territory She said about thirty young men carrying assorted weapons including guns, descended on them at the guest house, beating up everyone and destroying household effects worth millions of naira in the facility. Also, Ada Favour alleged that the hoodlums carted away, television sets, refrigerators, assorted drinks, foams, and huge sum of money. I was inside the room when they invaded us, they started shooting the window glasses, breaking everywhere and parking our electronic gadgets, they collected my sisters phone from her.” One of the injured victims, Mr Onyebuchi Okeke, said the way the hoodlums pounced on them was as if they were descendants of the Boko Haram people He said they were working on a bridge leading to Otoko village in the area when they arrived shooting non-stop into the air to scare onlookers while they destroyed cars, motorcycles among others Another victim, Mr John Nwankwo, said “we were working at the bridge, when the boys descended on us asking us to stop work immediately. “They started attacking us with machetes, destroying cars parked and even tricycles, God really saved us from the hands of those unidentified hoodlums.” Speaking with The Nation on phone, the President General of the community, Comrade Frank Mkpume, blamed the crisis on the activities of people he described as bad elements, who he alleged were bent on fomenting trouble in the land for selfish purposes. “They had been involved in some illegal activities including collecting levies from developers, selling lands of individuals, intimidating people and hijacking the work of the elders and market authorities we know them.” The Chairman of Otoko village, Mr Okwudili Obiakor, said that trouble started in December last year when the people wanted to replace the caretaker committee On the allegations, the Youth Chairman of the community, Mr Onyemazi Ngini, regretted the inability of the Anambra State government to recognise their new President General after they had impeached Mr Frank Mkpume, led to the lingering crises in the area. Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBPDknDy8SY Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. — Max Ehrmann, 1927[/i] |

Lionel Messi will take part in a Barcelona press conference on Sunday, three days after the club announced he was leaving after 21 years, the Spanish giants said Saturday. The 34-year-old will take questions from the press at noon (1000 GMT), Barcelona said in a statement. They will be his first public comments since his departure was announced. Barcelona president Joan Laporta said on Friday he was not prepared “to put the club at risk” by renewing Messi’s contract, as the club face up to huge financial problems ahead of the start of La Liga on August 15. Laporta said Barcelona were no longer negotiating with Messi and the Argentine forward was considering other offers. PSG, who bought Neymar from Barcelona for a world-record 222 million euros ($264 million) in 2017, appear favourites to sign Messi according to reports in France. Broadcaster RMC Sport reported that Messi has informed PSG of his desire to join the club and that discussions were ongoing over a two-year deal with the option of a third season. https://punchng.com/transfer-lionel-messi-to-give-press-conference-sunday-barcelona/

Chelsea are joining Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign Lionel Messi, according to reports in Spanish media. FC Barcelona said they would not be able to re-sign the Argentine star yesterday in a shock announcement. Manchester City was Messi’s preferred destination last season when he tried to leave but ultimately could not, but they are reportedly out of the running this time having made investments elsewhere. Seeing an opening, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is making a play to land the world’s best player on a free transfer. The UEFA Champions League winners are negotiating with Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku, and they will have their calculators out trying to see if they can sign both of them, or only one. Chelsea are flush with cash and looking to make a purchase, which is not the case for City, who have paid 100 million pounds to sign Jack Grealish. PSG, however, are the frontrunners. Abramovich is looking for a meeting with Messi in order to change that, and lure him to the Premier League. Barcelona are still thought to be in the running, despite it all, to retain Messi. Inter Miami has also been mentioned as a possible destination in betting markets. However, as of now, Paris is said to be the likeliest. https://www.barcablaugranes.com/2021/8/6/22612885/chelsea-join-psg-in-race-to-sign-lionel-messi-report

LaLiga has no value with the departure of King Messi |
The world football governing body, FIFA, has reacted to the departure of Lionel Messi from Barcelona, saying what the Argentine did for the La Liga club “was utterly mind-blowing.” Barcelona announced Messi’s departure on Thursday after both parties had initially agreed to sign a new contract. However, the 34-year-old who scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona could not sign the contract due to La Liga regulations. A statement on the club’s website read, “Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations). “As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled. “FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.” Reacting, FIFA tweeted, “Has one man ever done more for one club? https://punchng.com/what-messi-did-for-barcelona-was-mind-blowing-says-fifa/ |

Paris Saint-Germain are wasting no time in reacting to the bombshell news that Lionel Messi is not staying at Barcelona and have already started direct contacts with the player, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. Romano also provides further details on the backstory of the insane events of the last few hours. Everything was already agreed and Messi was ready to sign a new contract with Barça, but Joan Laporta told him the club is unable to register new deals due to the La Liga salary cap rules. The “issues also with other players” part is about Sergio Agüero, Eric García, Memphis Depay and Emerson Royal, who have already been announced as Barça players but cannot be registered for the same reasons as Messi. Messi at PSG seems like the logical next step given how much we’ve heard of the rumor and the fact that Neymar and Argentina national teammates Leandro Paredes and Ángel Di María are there, but it’s still really hard to process that the GOAT is leaving in these circumstances. Joan Laporta is giving a press conference on Friday to shed some light into all this insanity, but it seems as though Messi will have a new home before too long. https://www.barcablaugranes.com/fc-barcelona-transfer-rumors-news/2021/8/6/22612035/psg-direct-contacts-lionel-messi-report

In light of the announcement of the agreement between LaLiga and CVC Capital Partners, Real Madrid states the following: - This agreement was reached without the involvement or knowledge of Real Madrid and today, for the first time, LaLiga has given us limited access to the terms of the agreement. - The clubs have signed over their audiovisual rights exclusively for their sale on a competitive basis for a period of three years. This agreement, by way of a misleading structure, expropriates 10.95% of the clubs' audiovisual rights for the next 50 years, in breach of the law. - The negotiation was carried out without competitive proceedings and the financial conditions agreed with CVC Capital Partners give them annual returns of over 20%. This opportunistic fund is the same which tried and failed to reach similar agreements with the Italian and German leagues. - Real Madrid cannot support a venture which hands the future of 42 Primera and Segunda División clubs over to a group of investors, not to mention the futures of those clubs who qualify over the next 50 years. - Real Madrid will convene the Assembly of Representative Members to debate the agreement and discuss the significant loss of equity, unprecedented in our 119-year history. https://www.realmadrid.com/en/news/2021/08/05/official-announcement |

Skateboarding has always been as much about culture as competition. But now, that culture will have to make room for the biggest competition in the world: the Olympics. The sport is ready to make its Olympic debut in Tokyo with two different disciplines: street and park. Some 70 years or so after skateboarding was born out of the boredom of Southern California surfers, USA Skateboarding CEO Josh Friedberg told ABC News the Olympics will be as much about showcasing the sport's personality as the sport itself. What's exciting for me is that there's this chance on a global stage to share what makes skateboarding special," Friedberg told ABC News. "It's much more than just a sport. And I think that that shines through when you see the personalities of skaters, the Olympians, from all over the world, who love skateboarding ... and they're going to compete for their countries in this new environment." "I still believe that, as a culture-based sport, skateboarding has a lot to offer the world," he added. "And, you know, vice versa, the exposure that the Olympics can provide with this inclusion in the games for skateboarding just means that chance to share this with more and more people around the world." https://abcnews.go.com/Sports/counterculture-competition-skateboarding-makes-olympics/story?id=78775326
