Tokyo Olympics: Tunisian Hafnaoui wins 400m swim gold

Teenage swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui stunned the Tokyo Aquatic Centre to become the first African to win a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics after a shock triumph in the 400m freestyle.

The 18-year old, who had been the slowest of the qualifiers for the final, produced one of the biggest surprises of the Games so far as he beat Australia's Jack McLoughlin, who won silver, and Kieran Smith of the USA, who took bronze.

Hafnaoui arrived at the Olympics with a time that was 15th best of the field and only qualified for the final in eighth place, putting him in the less favoured outer lane eight.

But he swam hard from the start and produced a brilliant final 50 metres to tap the wall in first. His winning time of three minutes 43.36 was three seconds faster than his personal best.

I was surprised I was a finalist and now I am surprised to get gold," Hafnaoui said.

"I believed it when I touched the wall and I saw myself first. I was so surprised. I didn't expect that."

Hafnaoui is now only the second Tunisian to win gold in a swimming event in the Olympics, after double champion Oussamma Mellouli - who will be swimming the 10km marathon later in the competition. And his role in the Games is not over, as he will also compete in the 800m freestyle on Tuesday.

The title is Tunisia's fifth Olympic gold medal.

"I was (had) in tears in my eyes - when I saw the flag of my country and I heard the anthem in the background it was great. I am so proud of it," Hafnaoui said afterwards.

"When I hit the water, I just thinking about winning the medal not the time, and to go faster than yesterday,"

"I saw the Australian guy in the second 200m, I feel (felt) great in the water, it was a great fight in the end."

PoliticsHow Fake News Hurts Editorial Relationships In Newsrooms by abc115(op): 8:39am On Jul 22, 2021
Dapo Olorunyomi, publisher of Premiums Times, believes that the best way out is to establish a fact-check unit in every newsroom.

It used to be so easy. A reporter brings a story and the excited editor goes through it and simply publishes it, confident that the claims are correct.

Very often, impressed editors offered some morale boosting rewards – a bottle of wine. Lunch. Dinner. Cash. And even more. Trust was mutual.

Not anymore. With the prevalence of fake news, most editors also known as gatekeepers no longer trust the frontline soldiers and would use every available binocular to search for the truth.

Analysts have said that it is difficult to blame the editors for being more careful, considering the many cases of gaffes, brazen lies, fake news and wrong information the conventional media embarrass themselves with on daily basis.

Few weeks ago, an influential media house published a story quoting the World Health Organisation (WHO) as saying that 146 million Africans die of tobacco-related diseases every year.

The editor so trusted the reporter and did not ask how many Africans would have been left after just two or three years of such harvest. The reporter had added three zeroes to her copy.

Not long ago, a media house published a story quoting a state governor as pouring encomiums on his estranged predecessor at a birthday ceremony.

Very harmless story. Easy pick for every editor. But trouble started immediately the story went out. It was fake. No such ceremony took place. The reporter just imagined it.

Last year, a report announced the opening of airports after the COVID-19 lockdown. Eager prospective passengers rushed to book tickets only to be turned back. What they read was false. Fake. The reporter just deceived everyone.

The craze for fake news has indeed taken over today’s media space, with both the social and traditional media struggling to outdo each other in the spread of hoaxes.

The instances are just everywhere.

Aside from the fake news, photos or videos are purposefully created and spread to confuse and misinform. Photos or videos are also manipulated to deceive, while old pictures are often shared as new.

TEXEM

In some cases, photos from other shores are shared in the Nigerian space, ostensibly to create the impression that they are local scenes.

Umaru Pate, a Professor of Mass Communication and Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Kashere, says the trend is “dangerous, unethical, provocative and subversive to peace and societal serenity’’.

“Fake news misinforms and misdirects society with severe consequences on individual and national systems. It heightens tension, builds fear and mistrust among people.’’

Information minister, Lai Mohammed, has equally deplored the trend, declaring recently that fake news could “threaten and destroy’’ the country. He has also launched a campaign against it.

The minister recently observed that every news manager was faced with the challenge of managing fake news, and expressed the fear that the purveyors could push the country into crises.

Bro, Penalty is a game of luck, but if there's anyone with bad luck in that team, it should be Harry Kane...

He always try to put in his best at any tournament but gets unlucky in every finals.

And painful thing is that the English FA gave him the captains armband when he clearly lacks the leadership qualities.

Don't know why an inspirational Jordan Henderson was stripped off the captaincy, maybe because of injuries.... But I would have preferred they give it to someone like John Stones or Raheem Sterling who knows how it feels to lift a trophy.

FoodThousands Sign Petition To Stop Nigerians From Eating Dogs by abc115(op): 9:43am On Jul 12, 2021
Over 9,948 persons, as of press time, have signed an online petition urging the Nigerian government and President Muhammadu Buhari to ban the sale of dog meat in Nigeria.

Dog meat is a delicacy relished in the south-eastern part of the country. In Akwa-Ibom and Cross River States, it is often prepared with ‘Kaikai’ (local gin) and Ntong (scent leaves) and sold at major joints.

The petition, which was started over a year ago by Natasha Choolun, a UK-based international animal rights activist, only began to gain momentum on Thursday, after many Nigerians lended her voices and signatures to the campaign.

The campaign, which is hosted on Chage.org is titled ‘‘Stop Nigeria’s Barbaric Dog Meat Industry’’.

The petitioner, Ms Choolun, said the dog meat trade has gained economic value in Nigeria, as neighbouring countries like Niger transport them into the country to meet the growing needs.

Ms Choolun, who also said that dog owners are scared of their pet’s safety, is also advocating a ban on ‘‘The Dog Cat Wildlife Meat Trade & Wet markets’’ worldwide

Petition
The petition read: “Nigeria’s dog meat trade has become so prosperous that dogs are taken from surrounding countries such as Niger and transported into Nigeria, to bolster its growing demand for dog meat, also known as 4O4.”

“While Nigeria has a growing number of pet owners who have dogs and cats as companions and not for consumption, these owners live in constant fear of having their companion stolen by a local dog or cat thieves, knowing their pet would be sold to a dog trader or butcher, for quick cash.”

Choolun feared that the dog meat industry would make tourists susceptible to transmittable diseases, apart from the gruesome death the ‘companion animals’ are subjected to.

PoliticsDMO Confirmed PDP And Reno Omokri Lies by abc115(op): 10:13am On Jun 15, 2021
Debt Management Office Confirmed PDP And Reno Omokri are lying on who obtained the loan for Lagos-Ibadan Railway Project.

Buhari regime borrows $2.02bn from China in six years

The Buhari’s administration has borrowed $2.02bn as loans from China from 2015, data obtained from the Debt Management Office on Monday showed.

According to the statistics obtained from the DMO, Nigeria’s total debt from China as of June 30, 2015 stood at $1.38bn.

However, as of March 31, the country’s debt portfolio from China had risen to $3.40bn.

According to the DMO, loans from China are concessional loans with interest rates of 2.50 per cent per annum, a tenor of 20 years and grace period (moratorium) of seven years.

The debt office said that the terms of the loans were compliant with the provisions of Section 41 (1a) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007.

The loans from China are tied to project. The projects, (eleven in number as at March 31, 2020), include the Nigerian Railway Modernisation Project (Idu-Kaduna section), the Abuja Light Rail Project, Nigerian Four Airport Terminals Expansion Project (Abuja, Kano, Lagos and Port Harcourt), Nigerian Railway Modernisation Project (Lagos-Ibadan section) and the Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Abuja-Keffi-Makurdi Road Project.

The DMO said the low interest rates on the loans reduced the interest cost to government while the long tenor enabled the repayment of the principal sum of the loans over many years.

CelebritiesWomen Are Naturally Greedy, Selfish – Pete Edochie by abc115(op): 6:54pm On Jun 11, 2021
Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has asserted women are by default very greedy and selfish

The 74-year-old actor spoke in an exclusive chat on Adakarl TV where he stated that it’s in the character of women to be selfish and greedy depending on how they were indoctrinated.

Explaining further, Pete Edochie sited an example noting that 5 men can peacefully stay in a room as undergraduates till they eventually graduate but it’s not the same for women.

The lead character of the iconic series “Things Fall Apart” added it is quite unfortunate, regrettable but true that those traits are existent in the composition of women.

Pete Edochie also citing another example explained that the introduction of a woman among two harmonious brothers is capable of causing a rift between them that could even result to one killing the other.

He said: “Quote me…quote, it is in the character of women there is this inimical flaw that is uncompromising about them that makes them very greedy and very selfish.

It is not always that women represent bad influence but depends on how you were indoctrinated, that’s what matters.”

Social media users have expressed their opinions on the veteran actor’s assertion.
While most persons have affirmed and noted that Pete Edochie is obviously stating the obvious.

Few others have noted that selfishness and greed are not peculiar to the women folks alone.

Dollargirldice said: “Very true. That is why wife would borrow husband 1m and wife would ask husband for 2million later. Husband would give 2million to wife. Wife would come months later to ask for the 1 million she borrowed her husband. Na so we be Make una no vex.”

long_ass_day stated: “I guess the corruption in Nigerian was spear headed by women all these years. Greed and selfishness do not belong to women, it’s a human vice. If y’all want to go by gender nobody surpasses the male gender in that evil vice. So make una rest. Old age and deep voice doesn’t always equal wisdom.”

PoliticsLagos Mention In Buhari's Interview Not Reference To Tinubu, Says Presidency by abc115(op): 6:54am On Jun 11, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari’s reference to Lagos while speaking on the future of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has nothing to do with party stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the Presidency said last night.

During his interview with Arise TV, when the President was asked on his desire for the APC after his tenure, he said: “The hope of this administration is to see APC last beyond it. Therefore, we should allow the party to decide. You cannot sit there in Lagos, for instance, and decide on the fate of APC on zoning. The restructuring of the party has begun from the bottom to the top with the membership card registration. Every member of the party must be involved.

“We will soon conduct our convention. No single member of the party will be allowed to go against the wish of the party. We should allow the party to decide.”

Clarifying the comment last night in a statement, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garaba Shehu, said: “The Presidency wishes to distance President Buhari from a malicious campaign aiming to drive a wedge between him and a staunch ally, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This is nothing short of a mischievous attempt to drag the President into controversies. Our citizens and especially the members of the APC should not fall for this.

“The ruling party, the APC, unlike others before it is a popular political party owned by its entire membership, hence Mr. President was making the point during the 45-minutes interview that neither he nor anyone in the leadership could impose their wishes on the party.

“This is a basic consensus that binds the entire party leadership. The party leaders remain firmly committed to the principles that succession must be through the democratic norms and processes.

“The mention he made of Lagos was not a reference to the respected party leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, as the opposition party’s predatory designs would put it in order to damage the excellent relationship between the two of them.

“The President, the Asiwaju and the rapidly growing members of the party, want a dynastic succession of elected leaders.

“The APC should not be distracted from its progress as a democratic party.”

BusinessChina Can't Stop Talking About The Bill And Melinda Gates Divorce by abc115(op): 10:09am On May 06, 2021
The divorce of Bill and Melinda Gates has sent shockwaves through China, where the Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder has achieved a level of fame unlike almost any other Western entrepreneur.

The "Bill Gates' divorce" hashtag had generated more than 830 million views and 66,000 discussion posts on China's Twitter-like platform Weibo by Wednesday — far surpassing the 91 million views accumulated when Amazon (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott divorced in 2019.

Weibo users fretted about everything, from how the couple would divide their massive fortune to whether the divorce would affect Microsoft or their charitable foundation. Through their philanthropic organization, the pair have spent $53.8 billion on global health, poverty alleviation and other initiatives. Bill Gates is worth about $146 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, and the couple has pledged to give the vast majority of their wealth away to charity.

"You and Melinda have made huge contributions to people around the world. Even if you don't hold hands together in future life, I hope your foundation can still continue and help more people," one Weibo user wrote, responding to a post on Bill Gates' official Weibo account that announced the divorce in Chinese.

"You and Melinda have made huge contributions to people around the world. Even if you don't hold hands together in future life, I hope your foundation can still continue and help more people," one Weibo user wrote, responding to a post on Bill Gates' official Weibo account that announced the divorce in Chinese.

While Bill Gates no longer runs Microsoft, the company has spent decades building goodwill with Beijing. Its products have a considerable presence in China, even as other Western tech companies have been locked out.

While Facebook (FB) is blocked, for example, Microsoft's LinkedIn remains one of the few Western social media tools available in the mainland. The Bing search engine is also operational, while Google has been cut out for years.

And the success of the business has likely contributed to Bill Gates' personal draw: He now has more than 4.1 million followers on Weibo, outnumbering Tesla CEO Elon Musk's 1.7 million and Apple chief Tim Cook's 1.4 million.

Even prominent tech figures in China joined the conversation on Weibo: Kai-fu Lee — the former head of Google (GOOGL) China, who helped establish Microsoft Research Lab Asia, a hugely influential network in China — said it was hard for him to believe the news.

Based in Beijing, Microsoft Research Lab Asia has cultivated many Chinese tech talents, including Bytedance founder Zhang Yiming, Alibaba (BABA) tech chief Wang Jian and former Baidu (BIDU) president Zhang Yaqin.

Bill and Melinda are "the most affectionate couple I've seen among celebrity entrepreneurs," Lee wrote in a Weibo post.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation set up its Beijing office in 2007 and has since then worked with the Chinese government on several domestic projects in the country, ranging from HIV intervention to poverty reduction.

Bill Gates himself has visited China more than a dozen times since the 1990s and cultivated friendly relations with top leaders. He was welcomed by former Chinese President Jiang Zemin in March 1994, right before China officially gained access to the Internet.

At that time, China was eager to open up its economy and catch up with the West in technology. The trip — during which Gates promised Jiang that Microsoft would help China develop its software industry — helped Microsoft accelerate its expansion in the Chinese market.

In 2006, Gates hosted former Chinese President Hu Jintao for dinner at his home in the Washington state.

And last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote to Gates to thank him for his support in fighting Covid-19.

Gates was even hailed as "the Chinese people's old friend" by the ruling Chinese Communist Party in 2018
, a title that the Party occasionally uses for foreigners it recognizes as having a deep friendship with.

Meanwhile, on social media, some distraught Chinese users even remarked that the divorce had shaken their beliefs about marriage. The couple had been married for 27 years.

"Even you are divorced," one person wrote, responding to Bill Gates on Weibo. "How can the rest of us have hope of entering a marriage?"

PoliticsI Took Three Contractors To Buhari, Mbaka Admits by abc115(op): 5:17pm On May 03, 2021
called for the resignation of Buhari because of the General’s refusal to grant his contract request.

Mbaka, who supported the President during the 2015 and 2019 elections, had on Wednesday during his midweek ministration made a U-turn, asking Buhari to resign or be impeached for not doing enough to tackle widespread insecurity in the country.

But the Presidency opened a can of worms thereafter, saying Mbaka has suddenly become a critic because Buhari refused to offer contracts to his allies.

Reacting to the accusation, Mbaka admitted that he led three security experts to the President to proffer solutions to the insecurity ravaging the country even as he said that those people were not known to him.

The cleric said, “Yes, I led three security experts to the Presidency who offered to help salvage the security situation in Nigeria.

“I don’t know them, but they came to Enugu and pleaded for me to link them to government because of the level of insecurity and how Nigeria has been moving oil outside the country. These are the three people they rejected their offer.”
