experts: 16 questions Prophet Muhammad answered
By Abdulfatah Oladeinde
Friday, October 08, 2010

Anas Ibn Malik reports that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and greeted him in the mosque.

The Messenger of Allah asked him where he came from. The Bedouin said:” I came from far seeking answers to some questions”. Our master told him to ask his questions”:
1 I wish to be an intelligent man, what should I do?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Fear Allah”.

2 I wish to be a loyal servant to Allah and do what He wants me to do?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Read the Qur’an.”
3 I wish to be enlightened and have peace of heart?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Remember Death”.
4 I wish to be protected against enemies?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Trust in Allah”.

5 I wish to follow the Straight Path?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Do good to others for Allah’s sake.”
6 What should I do so that Allah does not abase me?
Holy Prophet Replied, “ Do not respond to the desires of your flesh.”
7 I wish to have a long life?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Praise and thank Allah.”
8 I wish for prosperity?

Holy Prophet Replied, “Be in a state of ablution at all times.”
9 How can I save myself from the hellfire?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Protect your eyes and your tongue and your hands and what is below your waistline against evil.”
10 How can I cleanse myself from my sins?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Shed tears for what you have done and repent by undoing what you have done wrong.”

11 I wish to be a respectable person?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Then, don’t ask for anything from anybody.”
12 I wish to be honourable?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Then don’t divulge the wrong doings of anybody.”
13 What should I do to protect myself from the tortures of the grave?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Recite the Surah Mulk.”
14 What should one do to be rich?

Holy Prophet Replied, “Read the Surah Muzammil.”
15 How should I calm my fear of the day of last judgment?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Remember Allah before you eat anything and before you sleep.”
16 What should I do to feel the presence of Allah when I make my prayers?
Holy Prophet Replied, “Give the utmost care in taking your ablutions and in being clean and pure.

IslamRe: To Muslims who react violently to Video against Prophet Muhammed (SAW) by abdulg: 2:24pm On Sep 17, 2012
bilms: Those Muslims, who kill other people in the name of protesting a blasphemy against our noble prophet (Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) are indeed worst than those whom they are supposedly protesting about. Those who created the blasphemy films are probably enjoying themselves, while they stupidly kill innocent people in the name of defending the prophet and islam. Even if they were to kill the real actors
being the blasphemy film,it is still sinful and wrong for them to take such action, only Allah is the ultimate judge who would repay the deed of all human. point of note: those who kill other people for what ever reason would face the wrath of the Almighty, for they have taken a life they can not create, this is the message preached by the noble prophet of Allah. I strongly condemn this act of cowardice, stupidity, ignorance and destruction of both life and property. I hereby advice all Muslims to defend Islam with good action, knowledge, teaching and practice of act of righteousness.

Be kind to your neighbors, friends and even your enemies for Allah is powerful enough to through your kindness, turn your assumed enemy to become your friend.
To me they should apply Quranic vs which says: And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, "Peace!";

Dr. Do Good:
@ Alkalinity, Allah told you to fight back if someone is speaking evil against Muhammed? Please can you tell me the type of fight? is it the physical fight muslims are fighting everywhere with guns and bumbs, it is wrong if your god(allah) ask you to engage in physical battle.

For your information, God also ask us to fight our enemy but not the physical fight muslims are fighting, but we fight with prayer for the battle is not our's but God's own.

Ephesiian 6:12-19

For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against
the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this
dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms.
Ep. 6:13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the
day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and
after you have done everything, to stand.
Ep. 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your
waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
Ep. 6:15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from
the gospel of peace.
Ep. 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which
you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Ep. 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God.
Ep. 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of
prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always
keep on praying for all the saints.
Ep. 6:19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words
may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the
mystery of the gospel,

Christianity EtcRe: What Is The Purpose Of Life? by abdulg: 6:13pm On Feb 18, 2011
THE PURPOSE OF CREATION

Though different people, on account of their shortsightedness or lack of courage, appoint various types of objectives for their lives and stop short at worldly purposes and desires, yet the purpose that God Almighty has specified in His Holy Word is: I have created jinn and men so that they should worship me (51: 57) . According to this verse the true purpose of human life is the worship and understanding of God Almighty and devotion to Him. It is obvious that it is not open to man that he should himself appoint the purpose of his life by his own authority inasmuch as man does not arrive in the world of his own will, nor will he depart from this world of his own will. He is a created being and He Who created him and bestowed upon him better and higher faculties than those bestowed upon other animates, has appointed a purpose for his life. Whether anyone comprehends that purpose or not, without doubt the purpose of man's creation is the worship and understanding of God Almighty and to lose himself in Him (Islami Usul ki Philosophy; Now printed in Ruhani Khazain (London, 1984), Vol. 10, p. 100).

We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to undertake it and were afraid of it. But man undertook it. Indeed he is capable of forcing himself to obey, disregardful of consequences (33: 73). This means that the Divine Trust, by which are meant the love of God and complete obedience to Him, was offered to the angels and the whole of creation and the mountains, all apparently full of strength, but they all refused to undertake it, being afraid of its grandeur. But man undertook it for he possessed two qualities, that he could force himself in the cause of God Almighty and could advance so far in love of Him as to forget altogether everything else .

The real purpose of all the external and internal limbs and faculties that have been bestowed on man is understanding and worship and love of God. That is why, despite a thousand occupations, man does not find his true well being except in God Almighty. Having acquired great wealth, or achieved high office, or having become a great merchant, or having acquired governing authority, or become a great philosopher, he departs in the end from these worldly involvements with a sense of frustration. His heart rebukes him all the time about his deep concern with the world and his conscience never approves his wiles and deceits and wrongful actions. This problem can be appreciated in another way. The purpose of the creation of a thing is determined by its highest achievement beyond which its faculties cannot rise. For instance, the highest a bullock is capable of is ploughing, or irrigation, or transportation, and therefore these are the purpose of its life and it cannot rise above them. But when we take stock of man's faculties and powers to discover his highest capacity, we find that he is invested with the faculty of seeking after God so much so that he desires that he should become so devoted to God's love that he should have nothing of his own and that everything should become God's. He shares his natural needs like food and drink and rest with other animates, and in industry some animals are ahead of him; for instance, the bees produce such excellent honey from every type of flower that man has so far not been able to compete with them. It is clear, therefore, that the highest capacity of man is meeting with God Almighty and thus the true purpose of his life is that the window of his heart should open towards God.
Christianity EtcRe: How Would You Describe Your God To Other Faith? by abdulg: 12:24pm On Feb 18, 2011
'Listen, O those who can, to what God desires from you. And what He desires is only that you become solely His and do not associate any partners with Him, neither in the heavens nor on the earth. Our God is that God who is alive even now as He was alive before. He speaks even now as He used to speak before. And even now He hears as He used to hear earlier. It is a false notion that in these times He does hear but does not speak. But He hears and speaks, too. All His Attributes are eternal and everlasting. None of His Attributes is in abeyance, nor will it ever be. He is the One without any associate Who has no son, nor has He any wife. He alone is the peerless Who has no one like Him. And He is the One Who is unique in that none of His Attributes are exclusively possessed by anyone besides Him. He is the One Who has no equal. He is the One Who has no one to share with Him His Attributes. And He is the One no Power of Whose is less than perfect. He is near, though He is far and He is far, though He is near.

He can reveal Himself to Ahl-e-Kashf in personification, but He has no body, nor any shape. He is above all, but it cannot be said that there is anything beneath Him. He is on 'Arsh, but it can't be said that He is not on the earth. He is the sum total of all Perfect Attributes and He is the Manifestation of every True Praise. He is the source of all that is Good and encompasses all Powers and He is the source of all Beneficences. He is the One to Whom everything returns. He is the Lord of all realms. He possesses every Perfection and is free from all defects, imperfections and weakness. It is His sole prerogative that all those who belong to the earth as well as all those who belong to the heavens should worship Him.

As far as He is concerned nothing is impossible for Him. All souls and their potentialities, and all particles and their potentials are His and only His creation. Nothing comes into existence without His agency. As for Him He reveals Himself through His Powers, His Omnipotence and His Signs. We can attain Him only through Him. He always reveals His Person to the righteous and shows them His Omnipotence—and this is the only means by which He is recognized and by which that way is recognized which is favoured by Him. He sees without physical eyes and hears without physical ears and speaks without a physical tongue. Likewise it is His work to bring a thing into existence from nothingness.

For example, in the visions of dream you see how He creates a world without matter and shows you every mortal and nonexistent being as having existence. Thus are all His Powers. Ignorant is he who denies His Powers. Blind is he who has no knowledge of His profound and inconceivable Powers. He can, and does, everything that He intends to, except those things which violate His Majesty or which are in conflict with His Promises and Verdicts. He is unique in His Being, in His Attributes, in His Actions and in His Powers.

All doors to reach Him are closed except the one door which the Noble Qur'an has opened. And all Prophethoods and all Books of the past are such as now there is no need left to follow them independently. Because the Prophethood of Muhammad (sa) comprises them all and encompasses them all. And except it [the Prophethood of Muhammad (as) ] all routes to God are closed. Each and every truth which leads to God is in it alone. Neither any truth will come after this, nor there was a truth which is not present in it. And for this reason all Prophethoods have ended with this Prophethood. And so it should have been: for a thing which has a beginning must also have an end. But this Prophethood of Muhammad (sa) in its intrinsic beneficence is not deficient. Rather its beneficence far surpasses the beneficence of other prophethoods. Following the Prophethood of Muhammad (sa) is the easiest route through which one can reach God. Obedience to it wins greater gifts of Divine love and Divine communion than ever before.''

“And she came here alone? All by herself?”

“Yes, Baba.”

“Lovely. Wonderful.”

“Baba, I don’t understand.”

“No, my son, you don’t understand.”

“Baba, I hope it is not what I’m thinking. Why must you think that every woman’s destiny is under your loins? Even Femi Fani-Kayode said that Saminu Turaki and co were supplying…”

“You see now? In the end, you are no different from that Ekiti boy who insulted me. You dare to open your rotten mouth and talk about my loins.”

What is the world coming to? You are throwing proverbs around in front of an elder without permission. Is that how you were raised?”

“Apologies, Baba. Ah, the Pastor is looking our way again. I think we are talking too loud. Let’s join the hymn.”

Count your blessings name them one by one
Count your blessings see what God hath done
Count your many blessings
Name them one by one
And it will surprise you what the lord hath done

“Baba, as I was saying, we cannot talk with the full complement of our mouths here because the wall has ears. Baba, this place is infiltrated by the ears of the Asiwaju o.”

“Ehn, Asiwaju ke?”

“Yes, there are suspicious elements in this church. Asiwaju will go to any length to infiltrate a gathering like this.”

“This Oyinlola has gone soft o. How can he allow Asiwaju’s ears to infiltrate this space? Are you sure that Kayode Fayemi, Raji Fashola, and even Rauf Aregbesola are not here?”

“Haba Baba!”

“That is why I was looking for that bastard Ekiti boy. If only he had come here today. I came prepared for him.”

“Baba, this Pastor will drive us out of his church today o. He is frowning at us again. Let’s listen a little.”

…in conclusion of my ministration today brothers and sisters, let us all rise up and say in unison to our dear brother, His Excellency General Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola, even as he places his new political direction in the hands of the most high at sixty, let us all say to him along with the prophet Isaiah:

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you…

“Remind me to recommend this Pastor to Jonathan as the next chaplain of the Aso Rock chapel. He is a man of God in whom I am well pleased. He knows what to say.”

“Okay Baba, I will remind you. As I was saying, forget the Ekiti rascal. He is not here. Only his wife came to represent him.”

“Ehn, iwo omode yi, what did you just say?”

“Oh, Baba, I said that his wife is here.”

“At this thanksgiving service?”

“Yes, Baba.”

“Why didn’t you say so! And we have been here talking politics and Jonathan and Ayo Salami. I will never understand you boys of nowadays. Always leaving the best wine until past the midnight hour.”

“Em, Baba, I don’t understand why you are getting so excited o.”

“Didn’t you just say that the woman is here alone?”

“Goodluck Jonathan of course. Didn’t you just say he is always doing sme sme like a woman? Ordinary to transfer and neutralize Justice Ayo Salami of the Court of Appeal, Jonathan and Katsina-Alu have bungled that vital anticipatory do or die strategy of ours. We have the Supreme Court firmly in our pockets because Katsina-Alu and Ogebe are our boys but that Ayo Salami won’t let us have the Court of Appeal.”

“Baba, knowing Jonathan and his sme sme, the BOT should not have entrusted him with that delicate assignment.”

“I didn’t want to give that assignment to Jonathan but Andy Uba, Chris Uba, Ahmadu Ali, Tony Anenih, and other party elders persuaded me to let the president look presidential by appearing to be in charge of things. We told him that Ayo Salami needs to go if we are to secure a landslide of judicial victories after April. He handed that delicate assignment over to Katsina-Alu and see what they have done.”

“What would you have done, Baba?”

“I would have gotten my friend, Ban Ki Moon, to find him something at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. An important UN position that the stubborn judge would not have been able to resist because that would translate to Nigeria losing that slot at the international level. I have asked Jonathan to look into that possibility since the promotion to the Supreme Court option has blown up in our faces.”

“Baba, move closer and let me whisper an idea into your ears… what about…em … em… I mean what about the Esa Oke protocol? We are still the PDP, aren’t we? Our anticipated landslide victories will never be safe after April so long as that Ayo Salami is allowed to hang around o. My only fear is that if we use the Esa Oke protocol, that restless Professor who wears a white mane will go about calling us a nest of killers.”

“Is that why you are whispering? This is a family gathering. Babangida is here. Alao Akala is here. Segun Oni is here. Segun Agagu is here. That Ekiti bastard is not here. Only our inner caucus people are here. There is nothing we cannot discuss openly in Oyinlola’s sakani.”

“Baba, the wall has ears.”

And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.
For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.
For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

Distinguished chieftains, stakeholders, and elder statesmen of the PDP, even as it happened unto the chosen ancients in the Bible, I command it today that so shall you smite and vanquish the ACN, the ACPN, the Labour Party, the CPC, and all the other enemies of your sixty-year inheritance in 2011…”

“This is a good Pastor o. He is talking a lot of sense. Where did Oyinlola rent him? We need to do something for this church. How much seed should we sow during offering?”

“Ten million naira should be enough, Baba.”

“Ok, I will do it but remind me to collect my money from the PDP national secretariat o. I am not sowing the seed in my private capacity o. Anyway, we were talking about Gbenga…”

“Yes o, Baba, since all these small small boys with a little change in their pockets are challenging us and rocking the boat left, right, and centre, what are you our elders doing about it in the Board of Trustees? Since Jonathan is always doing sme sme, I don’t think you should entrust him with our do or die strategy as we approach April o.”

My brothers and sisters, distinguished chieftains, stakeholders, and elder statesmen of the PDP gathered to celebrate and felicitate with our brother, His Excellency General Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, you are most welcome to our church. I say unto you all: nothing happens by accident. Everything is of God and has been pre-ordained by Him.

God pre-ordained things and that is why you conquered this nation and captured power in 1999, 2003, and 2007. I tell you, nobody shall dispossess you of your possession in 2011 for I saw your dominion over this nation spread till eternity in a vision. For it is written in the book of Deuteronomy 7: When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; huh

Christianity EtcRe: What Does Repentance Really Mean In Your Own Religion Or Worldview? by abdulg: 11:41am On Jan 21, 2011
Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness
grin

It is obvious that man is very weak by nature and has been charged with hundreds of Divine commandments. On account of his weakness, he falls short in carrying out some Divine commandments and sometimes he is overcome by the desires of the self that incite to evil. On account of his weak nature, he deserves that at the time of any slipping, if he should repent and seek forgiveness, God's mercy should save him from being ruined. It is a certainty that if God had not been the Acceptor of repentance, man would not have been charged with these hundreds of commandments. This proves that God turns towards man with mercy and is Most Forgiving. Repentance means that a person should discard a vice with the resolve that thereafter, even if he is thrown into the fire, he would not commit that vice. When man turns towards God Almighty with sincerity and firm resolve, God, who is Benevolent and Merciful, forgives him the particular sin. It is one of the high Divine attributes that God accepts repentance and saves a sinner from ruin. If man had not the hope of his repentance being accepted, he would not be able to refrain from sinning. The Christians also believe in repentance, but on condition that the person who repents should be a Christian. Islam lays down no condition for repentance. The repentance of the followers of every faith can be accepted leaving out only the sin of denying the Book of God and His Messenger. It is impossible that a person should attain salvation only through his conduct. It is the Benevolence of God that He accepts the repentance of some and bestows by His grace such powers on others that they are safeguarded against sinning.

To reject repentance and forgiveness is to shut the door of human progress. It is obvious to everyone that man is not perfect in himself, but is in need of perfection. As after his birth he gradually widens his knowledge and is not born learned and well-informed, in the same way, when after his birth he begins to be sensible of his surroundings, his moral condition is at a very low ebb. Observation of the condition of small children would show that most children are inclined to beat others on the slightest provocation and many of them are given to telling lies and abusing other children. Some steal and carry tales and are envious and miserly. When they grow up they fall into the grip of the self that incites to vice and are guilty of diverse types of evil and wickedness.

Thus for most people the first stage of life is impure, but when a fortunate person emerges from the fierce flood of youth, he turns towards God and withdraws from undesirable activities through sincere repentance and occupies himself with purifying the garment of his nature. These are stages of human life which a person has commonly to traverse. This shows that were it true that repentance is not accepted, it would mean that God does not desire to bestow salvation on anyone.
PoliticsI Didn’t Reject Tinubu As Running Mate — Buhari by abdulg(op): 12:10pm On Nov 16, 2010
Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has denied reports (THE PUNCH not included) that he rejected the former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as his running mate.

He spoke on Sunday in Lagos at a press conference after the 50th birthday party of Mrs. Laide Bakare, wife of the Presiding Pastor of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

He said talks were still ongoing in several quarters on the issue.

He said, “There is no iota of truth in it. If you could recall, from Mega Party to Mega Summit Movement, Democratic Initivative Movements etc are all part of the efforts we are making to try to form a coalition against the ruling party.

“There are groups, 22 of them. There is another, about 41 but the important thing is that all these groups are still talking, so that by the time or by end of next month when INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) wants the names of all those who are going to contest the national elections, I believe these alliances would have been completed.

“It is absolutely not true that I rejected the former governor of Lagos state. I wrote a statement that CPC would not fuse with any party but we are prepared to discuss with individuals or parties on any type of alliance that will identify with us and then negotiate by December.

“By then, INEC would have received all the names of those who would contest in all elections.”

The former head of state said his refusal to quit the presidential race was because he was acting out of conviction. He said he was part of the generation that saw Nigeria crumble through military coups and counter coups.

“I think I am in the position to impose some restraint on the reckless politics of Nigeria. I believe that multi-party democracy is the best form of governance and the biggest caveat is free and fair elections. This country is physically and materially insecure.

“All these will stop because the party will be responsible for people it elects. Nobody is going to be stronger than the party,” he added.

He said contesting to be president at his age was within his constitutional rights.

Speaking on his tenure as head of state, he said, “No matter how harsh Nigerians say we were then, we made the law acceptable. I know we executed a few people, we jailed a few people, some of whom were your colleagues, but we did it all under the law. We didn’t close a whole institution and deny southern people jobs.

“We didn’t do that. Myself and Tunde (Idiagbon) didn’t do it that way. We made the law and anybody who dared the law, we dared him. That we did.

“Go to our records, you will see. Our fault was that we fought corruption to a standstill during our time. Now Nigerians know better. They will give us opportunity to come back and do it under a different system.”

PoliticsNorthern Aspirants: Ciroma C’ttee To Disclose Result To Aspirants First by abdulg(op): 6:19pm On Nov 15, 2010
The committee of the wise men working to bring out a consensus candidate for the North from among General Ibrahim Babangida, Atiku Abubakar, General Aliyu Gusau and Kwara State Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki has said that it will first disclose the result of its work to the four aspirants in a meeting before letting out its findings.
Chairman of the committee Malam Adamu Ciroma who disclosed this to Daily Trust yesterday said the committee will commence the last leg of its meeting on 21st November, during which it will invite the aspirants for the briefing. The meeting, he said, will not last more than two days.

According to Ciroma, the committee has already concluded consultations on the assignment and what is left is the final deliberations on the data so collected.

Ciroma described the many insinuations in the media about the committee’s work and membership as “laughable” because they were nowhere close to the point. He said the committee had deliberately kept Nigerians in the dark concerning the number of people in the committee as well as their names in order to keep them away from undue pressure.

A source at the committee who corroborated Ciroma’s position also said that the decision was to maintain the integrity of the process in such a way that when the final results are announced, both the aspirants and other stakeholders will appreciate the outcome.

“You know the candidate to be selected by the committee is most certainly going to win the primaries of the PDP and eventually win the general election. So we have deliberately kept many things away from the public except whatever the chairman Adamu Ciroma tells the press,” the source said, stressing that “many of the reports you read in papers are spins and we know where they are coming from.”

The committee announced in Kaduna last week that it had completed the process of consultation with stakeholders and would start sifting its reports in order to reach a decision. As part of the final consultations, the committee met with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja as well as the Jam’atul Nasril Islam in the region.

The group has earlier met with northern political leaders including state governors, opinion leaders and various interest groups from across northern Nigeria to sample views regarding the assignment given to them by the four aspirants themselves who gave a commitment to subject themselves to the decision of the committee and work together for the candidate to be so selected.

grin Meanwhile, a highly placed source within the committee told Daily Trust last night that each member of the committee will cast a vote in favour of his preferred candidate and at the end of the day, the presidential aspirant with the highest tally will emerge the northern candidate who will slug it out with President Goodluck Jonathan at the PDP primaries.

According to the source, the committee has finished with its consultation and has begun the sifting of the information and data it has gathered. Afterwards, ``we will draw up a criteria which will guide us in the selection of the consensus candidate, `` the source said. He said that no individual or group mentioned any preferred aspirant by name in the course of their consultation.

“It would have been unwise for anyone or group to mention any preferred candidate because it will ultimately leak. Almost everywhere we went to, the people were harping on the fact that the consensus candidate should be honest, credible and electable,” he said.

PoliticsMy Mission Is To Clean-up Nigeria–(ribadu ) by abdulg(op): 3:23pm On Nov 15, 2010
grin A recent issue of The Economist examined the presidential bid of Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria's former anti-corruption chief. Ribadu made his name as the first head of Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2003. In this role, he pursued politicians and civil servants who were embezzling the energy revenues of Africa's biggest oil and gas producer
Ribadu's fortunes dipped when Umaru Yar'Adua took office as president in 2007. The sleaze buster was sidelined and later fled the country, returning only after Yar'Adua's death in May this year. He now hopes to run for the top job himself in elections due in early 2011.
The Economist talked to Ribadu about whether he would be able to run a clean campaign in Nigeria's often murky political scene.

WHY have you decided to run for president next year?
I understand now that to bring about change I need political power at the highest level. That means the presidency. I have worked under a president, and many say we did a good job at the EFCC, but when change came [and a new president took office] all our work was destroyed. It was all reversed.”

How will you use presidential power to continue your fight against corruption?
Just appointing me will be half the answer. When people see me, they will sit up and know that the era of corruption is over. On the practical level, I will run a transparent government that publishes accounts online. I will create “whistleblower laws” to protect the identities of those who expose corruption. I will reform the police and the judiciary.
Corruption causes all the problems that we have here. It causes the poverty and the insecurity. And there is no one better qualified to address the problem of corruption in this country than me.

Nigerian political campaigns are costly affairs that often rely on the sponsorship of unsavoury characters. Can you run a clean campaign in a dirty system? For example, will you probe your sponsors to find out the sources of their wealth?
Everything about me has always been clean and this will be a clean campaign, in any case, I will not need as much money as other parties because I am not going to bribe anyone. My campaign is about winning over people with my ideas, not my money.
But I will not probe anybody. I am not the EFCC chairman here - I am a politician who is trying to get people to support me. If money is coming to change a system that needs change, why should [the source] matter? Why try to destroy this opportunity?

You have chosen to run against the ruling People's Democratic Party with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Some Nigerian are raising eyebrows at this choice. Bola Tinubu, one of the ACN's most powerful members, has been under EFCC investigation for years. Does this concern you?
You should not worry about individuals when you are working on a project of this magnitude. It might affect the outcome, I am convinced that the mission we are out to do is not about an individual.

Your critics also note that you have never held political office before. Why not serve as a senator or governor for one term, and then run for president in 2015?
We can't wait for 2015. Nigeria's problems must be arrested immediately. There is no way we can allow this mess to continue. Also, for the first time, the ruling party is in real trouble. Goodluck Jonathan [the incumbent] is from a very small ethnic group, Sadly, even if he were the best person for the job, northern Nigeria would never accept it. He is not electable.
