naijaking1: I can't see things like WAEC, GCE, or NECCO here. What of BSc, or BA, even HND OR OND will do.
Silly diplomas awarded after drinking coffe and tea for 1 week don't count, you hear! Learn proper book, na lie. It is an insult to the armed forces — a terrible insult to the armed forces. If they are so embedded in the system and they have lost their souls, then they can go ahead and join everybody else in castigating a General of Buhari’s calibre. They are now talking about a school certificate. What is that? By the time he joined the army, in those days, there were no cutting corners. It is later when these same civilians took over from the army that admission into it became less transparent. I can give you an instance. There was Course Five around 1964: if one did not have a school certificate one couldn’t apply to join the army. And I know up to 1963 when the last General Officer Commanding left Nigeria, there were no corners to be cut. There was no such thing. Everything was on merit. And, that was how it was till Buhari’s time. Buhari attended the Mons (Officer Cadet School in Aldershot in England) and the Staff College; I don’t want to think they have an idea what they teach in those places. And the rest of us pretend as if we don’t know what they do there. You send a man to America for one and a half years in a military school. Do they think he just went there to learn how to fire a rifle? No. Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/its-an-insult-on-the-military-to-question-buharis-certificate-gen-akinrinade/ |

Conjectural musings everywhere you look. Sacked Lagos Chaplain: CAN backs Governor Ambode, says pastor’s sack in order
https://i1.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/05/DSC_0191.jpg L-R: Secretary, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Lagos State, Elder Israel Akinadewo; Chairman, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola and Vice Chairman, CAN Lagos State, Rev. Emmanuel Oguntoshin during a press briefing by CAN at the Chapel of Christ The Light, Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday threw its weight behind the decision of the Governing Council of the Chapel of Christ the Light to remove Femi Taiwo as presiding chaplain of the church.
Alex Bamgbola, the CAN state chariman, told journalists during a press conference in Lagos that the allegation that Mr. Taiwo was sacked because of an incident involving Bolanle Ambode, the state governor’s wife, was “not only untrue but unjust and erroneous.”
Media reports had claimed Mr. Taiwo was sacked for allegedly disrespecting Mrs. Ambode by failing to accord her due recognition during an anointing service on May 14.
Mr. Taiwo received his sack letter on May 15, with a directive to vacate the premises within 24 hours.
PREMIUM TIMES had reported that the chaplain’s problems leading to his removal predated the annointing service incident.
But addressing a press conference at the church premises on Tuesday the CAN leadership in the state said the Governing Council of the church acted within the law to relieve the chaplain of his duties.
Mr. Bamgbola said it was unfortunate that the public had been fed with “a totally untrue” story about an altercation with Mrs. Ambode, adding that the chapel was established by the State Government for its officials and members of the public with a Governing Council running its affairs through a standing Constitution.
He said under the constitution of the chapel, the Governing Council, which reports to the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Home Affairs, has the legal authority to appoint two officers to run the church who are the Presiding Chaplain and the Chaplain.
“The Governing Council has the constitutional responsibility and authority to recruit and to terminate two officers who run the Chapel who are the presiding Chaplain, who is the senior officer and the Chaplain, who is the deputy. So, the presiding chaplain and the chaplain are officers of the chapel and officers of the government of Lagos State,” said Mr. Bamgbola.
https://i2.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/05/DSC_0224.jpg
“With this clarification, it should be known by the general public that these two officers who run the chapel are strictly officers of the State Government and they are subject to terms and conditions of employment of the State Government. “When this matter began, many well-meaning Christians and elders tried to look at things and see how to work on the issue so that it does not get to the point we have seen. Well, the fact is, having investigated the matter carefully and objectively, that is CAN Lagos State, we wish to state here today that the Governing Council that recruited Venerable Taiwo acted within its constitutional authority to terminate the appointment of Venerable Taiwo.”
Mr. Bamgbola addressed the briefing alongside top leaders of CAN in the State.
“In particular and most unfortunate is the accusation of our revered and most responsible First Lady of Lagos State, Deaconess Mrs Bolanle Ambode as being instrumental to the termination of the appointment of the presiding chaplain because of one anointing service,” the CAN leader continued.
“We wish to state clearly here today that this is far from the truth. We want the press to know this and we want to thank all of you because the press has been quite on this matter except a particular paper that has been selling its paper through this matter which is unjust, unfair and does not portray professionalism.
https://i0.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/05/DSC_0177.jpg
“Deaconess Mrs Bolanle Ambode as far as we know is a true woman of God who fears God and lives a godly live and whom it has pleased God to raise to be first Lady of Lagos State at this time. The error of judgment by the said newspaper is most unfortunate and unfair to her, unfair to the entire Lagos State Government and unfair to the church at large in Lagos.
“We are therefore appealing to the press and the social media to please desist henceforth from publishing and circulating erroneous publication concerning this matter,” he said.
Mr. Bamgbola said the former chaplain was given notice before his from his official residence, but added that it would be inappropriate to start discussing the offence of the chaplain on the pages of newspaper.
He said for now, the CAN leadership has taken over the matter and would resolve it, but urged media practitioners to desist from circulating untrue story to the public.
Also speaking, Michael Adeyemi, Bishop of African Church, Ifako Diocese, the church where the former chaplain was seconded to the Chapel, said the church was satisfied with the position taken so far by CAN.
Mr. Adeyemi had granted an interview to the Punch newspaper saying Mrs. Ambode committed sacrilege and should apologize to the church. Read more: https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/232586-sacked-lagos-chaplain-can-backs-governor-ambode-says-pastors-sack-in-order.html |

I would never support PDP because they are not better, but APC needs to shut up on this. Ask Babangida and his goons. Reacting to the PDP campaign spokesman’s assertion while speaking as a guest on Channels TV’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, Mr. Mohammed explained that after Buhari was overthrown in a military coup in 1985, his house was ransacked and most of his documents were either stolen or burnt.
According to him, upon his (Buhari) return from exile, the former head of state swore an affidavit to show that his results were missing. “This happened long ago. He was a former head of State and I don’t think he’s going to look for job anywhere where they would ask him to bring his original credentials. He swore an affidavit and he tendered it when he contested for the presidency in 2003, 2007 and 2011 respectively. So what is the noise about Buhari’s credentials? CROWNWEALTH019:
Where is Buhari's WAEC Ask Babangida and his goons! I was the first substantive Nigerian Assistant Registrar. I took over the control of the examination from the University of Cambridge. I took examiners to Cambridge for training across 10 years and trained them in Nigeria. I had the opportunity of issuing WAEC certificates to three former Heads of State: Buhari, Abacha and Babangida in the 60s. When I was in WAEC, I was put on the council of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1966 by the national government of Aguiyi Ironsi. I was put on three important committees. The vice-chancellor and others were interested that I became a full staff of the university which I was not really keen about. But I finally accepted out of pressure. When I was serving on the council of the University of Ife, I was among the three-member committee selected by Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the first chancellor. I was on the council that installed him in 1967. Source: https://punchng.com/issued-buharis-waec-certificate-ex-registrar-86/ |

AreaFada2: Look I have relatives of Kemi's age born and bred abroad. Kemi even has both parents from Nigeria. It was once difficult to get Nigerian nationality through the mother. I am also of a certain age to know.
When Kemi's parents came abroad in the 1960s or even earlier (Kemi was born in 1967) Nigerians had no need to invent fictitious stories in UK. Coming to UK and living in UK was a lot easier. Most came as students.
Unless their parents did not register their birth with Nigerian embassy or High Commission abroad before they died. If they did the kids would have been entered in the parents' passport. That was enough for the kids to travel on the parents passport back then.
But as far as I know Kemi's parents are Alice. And we're Alive at age 22 when she graduated.
When she got her first Nigerian passport at age 34, there is no indication that she had to specially apply for naturalisation. She did not mention it. Back in the day, a lot of people in the class and years ahead of us were foreign born, many of mixed race whose parents brought to 9ja. All had 9ja passports. The older ones not too much younger than Kemi. In my decades in the West I have had no reason to see any plausibility in Kemi's version.
Liking Kemi as minister is immaterial. We have no control over that anyway. But we at least expect people running the country to at least have genuine credentials. As I have stated elsewhere before now, Kemi's situation would have predisposed her to a long provisioning loop - which came with no guarantee of success - if she had tried to obtain a Nigerian passport in 1989, when she graduated at the age of 22. To be clear, we are referring to some of Nigeria's darkest years, when her foreign-born citizens were viewed with suspicion and indifference in her embassies around the world. In fact, had she turned up at the Nigerian High Commission in London to apply for a passport; she simply would have been laughed out of the place! This was an experience that many who fall into her category would understand. Now this is not to say there were no foreign-born Nigerians who obtained passports during that period. My point is that, because the application process was quite opaque and onerous, they needed "connections"/"long-leg" and to embellish the truth in some cases. This is the reason why it was not uncommon to find a Nigerian born in Austria and raised there, with his place of birth listed as Lagos, at the time. In my view, the importance of section 25 of the 1999 constitution - which helped sunset the type of ambiguity that had circumscribed the (dual) citizenship of many Nigerians in successive years since 1960 - is often understated. But then like most of these issues, I suppose it is pretty much of "he who feels it, knows it". 25. (1) The following persons are citizens of Nigeria by birth-namely-
(a) every person born in Nigeria before the date of independence, either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents belongs or belonged to a community indigenous to Nigeria;
Provided that a person shall not become a citizen of Nigeria by virtue of this section if neither of his parents nor any of his grandparents was born in Nigeria.
(b) every person born in Nigeria after the date of independence either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents is a citizen of Nigeria; and
(c) every person born outside Nigeria either of whose parents is a citizen of Nigeria.
(2) In this section, "the date of independence" means the 1st day of October 1960.In closing, it is my considered view that Kemi Adeosun became a victim of the same fudge used to abseil a thorny problem - at the time she was appointed as the commissioner of Finance in Ogun state . It was wrong at the time as it still is even now. |

AreaFada2: No plausible explanation there. People like us with foreign born kids know better.
She obtained her first Nigerian passport at 34. But she did not acquire Nigerian citizenship at 34. She did at birth through at least one of her parents.
At least her parents would have known that. If she didn't know, then she wasn't at all interested in Nigeria, beside family holiday, up till age of 34!
Fact is she didn't envisage coming to Nigeria or getting the opportunities Wale Edun and others later gave her in Nigeria when she graduated around age 21 or 22 back then.
Someone who is supposedly of the caliber of finance minister could not ensure her exemption certificate was genuine. How can she ensure that companies bidding for huge govt contracts from her ministry are not parading Oluwole documents as proof of incorporation, tax clearance and evidence of track record in the industry?
Those who pushed her forward only quickly organised a high grade Oluwole exemption certificate for her. They didn't think anybody will check. And she got away with it for so long.
If narcotics were found in your possession at the airport, will the argument (without proof) that somebody else put it in your bag free you from the crime? NO SIR, IT WON'T! Let us not use tribalism to tell ourselves lies or defend the indefensible.
I have often advised diaspora born kids to consider NYSC in 9ja. Especially the final year medics/dentists that mill around.
But most point to safety/security concerns why their parents are against it. The path to citizenship for those born and raised abroad has not always been as clear as your opening sentence implies. I know many foreign-born Nigerians over a certain age who once had to invent fictitious places of birth, in Nigeria, just to obtain a Nigerian passport. It is of course true that the application process is less opaque now, and that people like you would not have to lie on behalf of your children unless you absolutely want to. But those of us of us who grew up in a particular era know this has not always the case. I have never been a supporter of Kemi Adeosun, because I have always considered her inadequately qualified for the job she took on. But I also know well enough not to conflate my personal biases with my grasp of what once obtained with Nigeria's naturalization and immigration service. |

So FFK has thrown red meat to dogs that have escaped from their kennels again? By his logic, even though the Presidential Advisory Committee (PACAC) recognises Saraki's right to continue serving as Senate President (see below), Buhari nevertheless engineered the subterranean move witnessed today. Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee (PACAC) has said Senate President Bukola Saraki can still keep his position as Senate President despite defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP). In his infinite wisdom, it is the Presidency that has repeatedly pleaded with NASS to reconvene in recent days which also blockaded the legislature today? How does that contradiction square? Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Mr Ita Enang, has urged the parliament to suspend its recess and reconvene to approve the N228 billion supplementary budget needed to prosecute the 2019 general elections.
Mr Enang made this plea while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday morning on his way to the airport. What's with this conspiracy theory-believing, one time-minister of the FGN, who never ceases to remind us about his pedigree - but who is clearly one sandwich short of a picnic? |

I hope this teachable moment provides yet another lesson to ethnically bigoted commentators who invest so much emotional stock in Nigeria's chameleonic politicians April 9 2017Already, some members of the caucus, believed to be key loyalists of Saraki, are already calling for the resignation of the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Their grouse is simple. They believe that Akpabio is using his position as Senate Minority Leader to shield himself from prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The aggrieved lawmakers, who are about three in number, one of whom is currently in a running battle with the EFCC, is reaching out to PDP Senators to pass a vote of no confidence on Akpabio.
Trouble started for Akpabio last week, when he attended the 65th birthday celebration of a former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite the rift between the All Progressives Congress (APC) leader and Saraki.
Akpabio, apart from attending the birthday bash, also placed over four advertorials in key national newspapers, where he congratulated Tinubu and described him as a leader.
Saraki and his loyalists, boycotted the birthday celebration, neither did he place advertorials in any newspaper to congratulate Tinubu. Meanwhile, this more recent account provided by @OP is not true... Aug 4, 2018
Tinubu, Akpabio Did Not Meet In Lagos
The Eagle Online had in a report titled: “Breaking: Akpabio visits Tinubu, to be formally received into APC by Osinbajo,” reported that Akpabio met with Tinubu in the APC’s leader’s home in Lagos State
Contrary to an earlier report by The Eagle Online, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, did not meet on Saturday (today) in Lagos.
The Eagle Online had in a report titled: “Breaking: Akpabio visits Tinubu, to be formally received into APC by Osinbajo,” reported that Akpabio met with Tinubu in the APC’s leader’s home in Lagos State.
Though the aspect on the story on the reception of Akpabio by the Vice President stands, it has been learnt that Tinubu has been in Abuja almost all week.
The story, illustrated with a photograph of Akpabio and Tinubu during the birthday of the former Governor of Lagos State last year, also has it that Osinbajo will formally welcome Akpabio from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on August 8 at the Ikot Ekpene Stadium in Akwa Ibom State.
Among those to join Osinbajo in welcoming Akpabio to the APC is the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang. Source |

To be clear; not many young people of Nigerian descent, raised abroad, would have felt a need to apply for our nation's passport in 1989. Now you would have to be older than a certain age to appreciate just how much of a cloud hung over the country during that dark era of military rule. Now having established the foregoing, my own sense tells me Kemi is still guilty of a serious infraction. The problem is; practically all commentators on this thread are barking up the wrong tree.
