In December this year the Republican demanded a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.”

Although later Mr Trump and his allies specified that the ban would focus on countries with a proven history of terrorism and not on discrimination against religion, the call was widely condemned.Videos and speeches defending the ban remained on the Trump campaign website until Wednesday, November 9.The day after America chose Donald Trump their president there were found no mention of his contoversial statement regarding a ban. The page now redirects to his page encouraging voters to donate to his campaign.

The Trump team are known for editing information and scrubbing pages from its websites. After speculation rose that Melania Trump did not not complete her university degree, her biography page was taken down and started to redirect to Mr Trump’s golf course.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has decided to investigate its deputy national publicity secretary, Timi Frank, for alleged anti-party activities.

PoliticsKaduna Residents Agree To End Violent Conflicts by abila122(op): 4:08pm On Oct 25, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Kaduna-reidents-768x432.jpg

Residents of Kaduna South Senatorial zone comprising of 29 ethnic communities from five local governments have reached an agreement to put an end to violent conflict and allow peace to reign in the zone and the State.

The peace agreement was brokered by a Jos-based Center for Humanitarian Dialogue (CHD) at a peace parley held in Jafanchan, Jemaa local government of Kaduna state.A copy of the communique signed by the 29 communities and made available to THE NATION in Jos read thus: “Worried by the recent communal clashes in southern Kaduna, twenty nine communities spread across five local government areas of the state have signed an agreement to remain in peace and not to allow such ugly incidents to happen again.

“Leaders from the five local government areas, made up of Kachia, Kaura, Jema’a, Sanga and Zangon Kataf, signed the pact after a parley brokered by Swiss government sponsored Nairobi based inter governmental organisation, Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. HD has been involved in peace and conflict mediation process in Plateau and Kaduna states.”

More than 20 people were killed when clashes erupted among communities in Jema’a local government area of the state. The areas affected were Godogodo, Ninte, Gada Biyu, Gidan Waya, Antang and Dogon Fili as well as Kagoro in Kaura local council.”

The communities said that they were committed to peaceful resolution of the issues that led to the clashes and assured their people and leaders and the wider community of their continued commitment to uphold the peace in Southern Kaduna.

“While acknowledging that inter communal dialogue process, which focused on, among other issues, the prevalent farmer/grazer issues and the return/ settlement of internally displaced persons, is a continuous process, the leaders said that they were committed to sustaining the peace through ensuring the implementation of the dialogue recommendations.

“The inter-communal dialogue between the twenty nine ethnic groups has succeeded in helping us begin to jointly find solutions to our issues and concerns. The community-driven approach has given us much more direct involvement in finding these solutions. The dialogue cut across all levels of civil society and has sought the buy-in and support of key stakeholders (Federal, state and local government, the business community, traditional rulers, community and religious leaders, women and young people).

“The bottom up approach provided a different model for addressing the issues and was received positively by our communities. We cultivated a new culture among ourselves of embracing dialogue as the mechanism for dealing with our disputes, hoping to ultimately lead to peaceful co-existence between us.

The peace pact, entitled ‘Kafanchan Peace Declaration’, also assured that every attempt must be made to end the attacks and ensure that there were no reprisals, stressing, “We are conscious that the failure to implement an agreement is worse than not reaching an agreement at all”

“Thus the communiqué outlines one key issue that has affected the implementation and explains how to shore up factors that can positively affect its implementation and eliminate, contain or manage those which may undermine it.

“As part of fence-mending, the leaders agreed on joint condolence visit to affected families, resettlement of displaced Fulani and natives and to hold perpetrators accountable so as to end impunity”

To ensure permanent end to the conflict, the communiqué asked state and local governments to define specific conflict prevention and goals and factor the promotion of conflict prevention objectives into polices and legislations. The communities are to intensify the dissemination of information to the broader community.

PoliticsWhy I Rejected Ambassadorial Nomination – Tallen by abila122(op): 9:02pm On Oct 24, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Pauline-Tallen.jpg

A former deputy governor of Plateau, Mrs Pauline Tallen, has said that she turned down her ambassadorial nomination in order to be fair to other parts of the state in terms of federal appointments.

Tallen, a former Minister of Science and Technology and Labour Party governorship candidate in Plateau in 2011, made this known in Abuja on Monday.“I hail from the same local government and tribe with Gov. Simon Lalong. I turned down the nomination because of balancing of appointments; I don’t think it is right for me to accept the appointment.

“Secondly, proper consultation was not done, my governor was not consulted because I called him when he was in United States of America to ask but he said that he was not aware.

“For me, I was consulted and I turned down the appointment even before the announcement was made,” adding that “my husband’s ill-health is another reason why I will not accept the appointment.

Tallen said that Mr President gave her another option and also assured her that Plateau would not miss its two slots.

The former deputy governor, who appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for the honour, said that her name was not included on the list of nominees and was surprised when the announcement was made.

She further said that her decline would not affect Plateau chances for the two slots as another name had already been submitted in her stead.

Meanwhile Gov. Simon Lalong has described Tallen’s decline as an exhibition of political maturity.

“Plateau is always on the front-burner when it comes to politics, that shows her maturity not just in Plateau but as a national figure.

“Once things are not done properly, it is better for a leader and a mother to come out and say that things are not done properly in the interest of the state.

“When I heard the announcement I was very shock because what happened was without proper consultation,” he said while interacting with newsmen in Abuja.

The governor said that his administration was working toward addressing the issue of balancing appointments, and pointed out that he had already discuss the issue with Mr President in their last meeting.

Lalong said that the opposition was already saying that the appointments were lopsided, but stressed his administration was a government of change and they would only do what would favour all sections of the state.

He appreciated Tallen for her decision, and assured the people that their quota would be filled and he would go further to ensure that distinguished sons and daughters of Plateau get more appointments.

A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Aliyu Modibbo, has defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Modibbo was a founding member of the PDP, which has ruled the country for 16 years.

The former minister registered to become a member of the APC last Saturday at the party’s office in his ward in Kumo West of Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.Modibbo also served as Minister of State, Power and Steel as well as Minister of Commerce during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo.

Late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who succeeded Mr. Obasanjo in 2007, appointed him Minister of FCT.

Speaking shortly with reporters after his registration, Mr. Modibbo said he joined the APC in order to contribute to the success of President Muhammadu Buhari in his quest to change Nigeria for the better.

“This is the first time I am personally joining a political party, even though I served as minister three times under the PDP administration. All the appointments were based on merit,” he said.

He also said he deliberately delayed his joining the APC till now so that he would not be accused of seeking for an appointment in the administration of the new government.

He however, said he has always wanted to be in the APC.

He pledged to work with leaders of his new party in Gombe, such as former Governor Danjuma Goje, to unite all members of the APC in the state.

A report by Hausa medium, Rariya, on Saturday said although Mr. Modibbo did not signify any intention to seek for elective office, several persons within and outside the state have asked him to run for the office of governor in 2019.

The paper said many in the state were of the view that someone with his experience is needed to run the affairs of the state. It also said that was partly why his constituents requested him to join the APC.

According to him, the state has established a platform that allows citizens to monitor government projects and activities.

On his part, Mr. Sanjay Prodhan, the Chief Executive Officer, Open Government Partnership, commended the Nigerian government for its determination to end corruption in all aspects of life.

He said the organisation is involved in repositioning Nigeria and empowering citizens for overall national growth.

Prodhan said those involved in the project, including civil societies, are targeting to create actions that would open up governance and fight corruption.

PoliticsRecession Is A Result Of Nigeria’s Bad Leaders – Pat Utomi by abila122(op): 5:32pm On Oct 22, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Pat-Utomi.jpg

Nigeria’s renowned economist and financial expert, Professor Pat Utomi, has attributed the present economic recession to the “bad behaviour” of previous governments, Daily Post reports.
The renowned political economist noted that Nigerian leaders are lazy and many are in the position of authority but are not leaders.

He stated that every government appears to be worse than the one before it and that there is the dearth of leadership values among political elites.Utomi said: “Nigeria inflicted recession on itself through the bad behaviour of previous governments. It was the result of an elite that is too lazy to restructure the economy. Our leaders are lazy and they always want the oil price to rise.”

He challenged the youth not to emulate the present crop of “mentally lazy elite that are not ready to build their country.”

“We are in dire need of leaders with a sense of service towards others and contribution to the Society. Nigeria is a paradox of progressive degeneration. Every government is worse that the one before it because we have not refused to learn,” he said.
Utomi, had earlier said that Lagos state is a crucial catalyst if Nigeria’s economy is to witness a turn around for the better.

The former presidential candidate said there were a lot of lessons to be learnt from the Lagos economy, which according to him, is largely driven by it’s huge investment in infrastructure, vibrant tax collection strategy and an enabling environment for businesses to thrive with less dependence on oil revenue.

PoliticsNiger-delta Avengers Write’s To Buhari by abila122(op): 11:25am On Oct 22, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Niger-delter-Militants.jpg

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) is not keen on meeting with security agents who may be representing the Federal Government at the proposed peace talks over the crisis in the zone.

The NDA, in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, said it is not proper for a democratically elected government to conduct such talks through security agents. It was responding to what it called the president’s “continuous disparaging remarks since the cessation and suspension of hostilities by our fighters for liberation of the Niger Delta from economic colonialism of Nigeria.

“We are curious of comments like ‘Niger Delta militants objective is to colonize Nigeria economically’ and ‘Niger Delta militants are sponsored by economic looters’ during the Passing Out Parade (POP) of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) 63rd Regular Course,” NDA said in the open letter signed by ‘Brig. Gen’ Mudoch Agbinibo.

The letter further stated that, “You personally issued misleading statements and threats of decisive military action – if necessary – to deal with Niger Delta agitation because you have purportedly opened up channels of talks through security agencies/agents and the Multinational Corporations.

“Mr. President, do democratically elected governments open channels for talks in situations like we have in the Niger Delta through security agencies/agents or you are assuming the Niger Delta as a conquered colony in your 1984 Era?”

The militant group also expressed dislike for the President’s constant reference to the recently flagged off clean up of Ogoni as part of government’s program to salvage the ravaged environment.

It said the pollution of Ogoniland was caused by successive governments, adding:”How can you justify Ogoni clean-up and at the same time constitute a Task Force Called “Operations Delta Safe” that is embarking on environmental pollution with the burning and bombing of petroleum products in the guise of fighting oil theft?

“Does that amount to lack of genuine ideas or sincerity?

“Or at least, is there no relationship between environmental pollution and the ongoing indiscriminate burning and bombing of petroleum products by operatives of the so-called Operations Delta Safe?

“Mr. President, basically, some other factors fueling the Niger Delta conflict are corruption engendered by successive government that you served since oil becomes the commonwealth of the nation Nigeria.

“Whilst you start the Ogoni clean-up process, what is wrong in reviewing the Sir Henry Willinks Commission Report of 1958? The Ogoni Bill of Rights, The Kaiama Declaration document of the Ijaw Youths Council, The General Alexander Ogomudia Committee Report, and The Leedum Mitee-led Niger Delta Technical Committee Report?”

The Registrar of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) Prof. Ishaq Oloyede has asked the House of Representatives to quash the bill that validates three years JAMB result usage.

The JAMB boss stated this at the University of Ilorin in Kwara State while answering questions from journalists, that the bill when passed will only hurt the students rather than help them.He noted that JAMB sets achievement tests and not aptitude test, therefore, such system will not work in Nigeria. While urging President Muhammadu Buhari not to assent to the bill, he further noted that the country does not have a stable curriculum.

He appealed to members of the House of Representatives to critically look at the issues before taking a stand, as it is harmful to the future of the students.

PoliticsBoko Haram: Our Objective Is To Rescue Everybody, Says Buratai by abila122(op): 7:20pm On Oct 18, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Chief-of-Army-Staff-Major-General-T-Y-Buratai.jpg

The Nigerian Army has pledged to support Federal Government efforts, including diplomacy, aimed at rescuing the remaining Chibok girls and other Nigerians abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East.

The Chief of Army of Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, made the pledge in Lagos on Tuesday while fielding questions from journalists after inaugurating the new headquarters of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, Yaba.Buratai also said that pockets of attack by Boko Haram in the North-East were not an indication of resurgence of insurgency.

Asked to give update on the Chibok girls, the COAS said, “As for the army, we are working on our own strategy not only for the rescue of the Chibok girls, but other Nigerians that have been abducted by the insurgents.

“It is our objective that we rescue everybody.”
On the pockets of attack, Buratai said that Nigerian troops in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task were addressing the attacks.

“You cannot call these attacks resurgence of insurgency. We are taking care of the attacks.

“Whenever there is attack, we look at it again and see what happen so that we address subsequent ones.

“There is a conflict in which we have done very well. We have gone very far, we have put – terrorists out of our territory.

“They mostly come from outside our territory to attack our troops. We are working along with the Multinational Joint Task Force to address that,” Buratai said.

He said that contrary to impressions, the army was not over stretched with its involvement in many operations across the country to check criminality.

According to Buratai, the army is involved in operations to deal with crimes because it is better trained, equipped and has better intelligence.

The army chief was in Lagos to inaugurate projects in some military formations in the state.

Earlier, while inaugurating the complex, Buratai said that since he assumed duty over a year ago, he had embarked on “massive reconstruction and renovation” of both living and office accommodation for personnel across army formations nationwide.

He urged officers and soldiers to discharge their duties professionally and responsibly and be loyal to constituted authority.

The COAS inaugurated the renovated headquarters of the Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Bonny Cantonment, as well as the Nigerian Army School of Public Relations and Information Studio ICT Centre, all in Victoria Island, Lagos.

He also inspected the Nigerian Army Ordnance Tailoring Factory, Yaba which sews uniforms for army personnel.

Buratai also paid a visit to the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba, where he held closed door meeting with the management of the hospital.

FoodPepsi Set To Reduce Sugar From Its Drinks by abila122(op): 7:40pm On Oct 17, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/pepsi-sugar.jpg

The global food giant said on Monday that two-thirds of its single serving drinks will have 100 or fewer calories from added sugar by 2025.

PepsiCo said the change was driven by shifting consumer needs and new dietary guidelines from the World Health Organization. Many customers have tapered their intake of high-sugar, high-calorie soft drinks from Pepsi and Coca-Cola due to worries about sugar consumption. But at the same time, diet beverages have also been falling out of favor as consumers worry about chemicals in their drinks.

Both Pepsi and Coke have been trying to adapt to changing consumer tastes.

Pepsi announced last year it would stop using the artificial sweetener aspartame due to declining sales and health concerns. Scientific studies have linked artificial sweeteners to obesity and diabetes.

But PepsiCo reintroduced aspartame to some products in September, saying consumers wanted more choices.

Along with its commitment to cut calories in its sugary drinks over the next decade, Pepsi also said it would reduce levels of saturated fat and sodium in the majority of its products.

“The company will continue to refine its food and beverage choices to meet changing consumer needs by reducing added sugars, saturated fat and sodium levels in its product portfolio,” Pepsi said in a statement.

Embattled National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, who is facing trial over alleged N400million fraud, on Monday, prayed the Federal High Court in Abuja to allow the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to stand surety for him.

Metuh is answering to a seven-count charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, preferred against him and his firm, Destra Investment Limited. The anti-graft agency alleged that the defendants had prior to the 2015 presidential election, received N400m from the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, without executing any contract.

It said the fund which was released to Metuh and his firm by the erstwhile NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki, retd,‎ ‎was part of about $2.1billion earmarked for the purchase of arms to fight insurgency in the North East.

PoliticsAPC: Fayose “lone Enemy” Of Buhari by abila122(op): 5:16pm On Oct 17, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/fayose-court-ekiti-1-768x512.jpeg

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has praised President Muhammadu Buhari over the release of 21 of the Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State two years ago.

The party also commended the Nigerian armed forces, the international community and other non-governmental institutions, especially the Bring Back Our Girls Group for their persistent roles in the rescue of the Chibok girls. It said the feat is a fulfilment of Buhari’s campaign promise to secure the release of the girls and reunite them with their families. It urged the President to ignore Governor Ayodele Fayose’s “insincere and infantile” comments on the abduction of the girls, explaining that “the governor is on his own in his reckless criticisms of the Federal Government over fears of repercussions on his ceaseless infractions on the law”.

Fayose has been persistent in his claim that no Chibok girls were missing, saying that the Federal Government’s claim on their rescue was a distraction from the harsh economic reality in the country.

But reacting in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, praised the President for keeping his electoral promise to rescue the girls. He urged the President to intensify efforts to secure the release of the remaining girls still in captivity.

Berating Fayose for choosing to make himself a “lone enemy” of the President, Olatunbosun said:
“It is unfortunate that the governor of a state known for decency and honour could utter such a horrible statement over a very sensitive national issue that borders on the lives of young school girls whose parents have been in agony in the last two years.

“Nigerians know that Fayose is a reckless talkative who plays politics with everything and anything but never in their imagination think he can be so heartless to say the girls were not missing.

“Now that the 21 girls were shown live on TV being reunited with their parents in an emotional ceremony, will Fayose still say it was stage-managed?

“Fayose is taking his pound of flesh from the Federal Government for his several infractions on the law over which federal agencies are investigating him and he believes that the best way to blackmail the Federal Government is ceaseless criticism so that he can accuse Buhari of witch-hunt when eventually the law beckons to account for his lawless conducts.”

While apologising to the parents of the girls and urging them to take Fayose for “who he is”, Olatunbosun regretted the governor’s “callous disposition” to the plight of the children and their parents, wondering if Fayose would have taken the same position if the girls were his daughters.

“APC, on behalf of the good people of Ekiti State, wishes to apologise to Nigerians, especially the agonised parents of the Chibok girls, over the insensitive outburst of Governor Fayose.

“Ekiti people are humane, decent and responsible people and the position of Fayose on the matter does not represent the collective position of Ekiti people on the missing Chibok girls.

“It is now crystal clear that Fayose is one of those who misled President Jonathan on the issue of the missing Chibok girls by insisting that the girls were not missing. He is jittery now that all the lies told by the Jonathan administration that the Chibok girls were not missing are exposed.

“We wonder if Fayose would have taken the same position if his daughters were among the missing girls,” he said.

Slamming Fayose for “always employing lies to cause social discontent to set Nigerians against the Federal Government in order to bring Buhari’s administration down, Olatunbosun said APC had been vindicated on its several warnings to Nigerians that “Fayose is a dangerous and pathological liar whose conduct is a threat to our democracy”.

“How else can we describe a governor who is always seeing black even when it is glaring to all that the true colour is white?” he queried, imploring Buhari to ignore Fayose’s tantrums and remain focused on securing the release of the remaining Chibok girls still in captivity while also continuing making efforts towards Nigeria’s economic recovery.

Nigeria Premier League defender Izu Joseph has been shot dead in his hometown of Okaki in oil-rich southern Bayelsa state, it was reported on Monday.

The player’s father said Joseph was killed accidentally by troops battling Niger delta militants on Sunday.Initial reports said Joseph was killed at a restricted area by soldiers on a raid, with his identity as a footballer only established after he had been shot.

The powerful central defender joined Shooting Stars from Bayelsa United when the Ibadan club were still in the second-tier Nigeria National League.

He was man of the match at champions Rangers when Shooting Stars drew 1-1 this past season.

The Sports Writers Association (SWAN) commented: “It is indeed a great loss not only to 3SC, but also to the football fraternity in Nigeria.”

It urged government to beef up security across the country to prevent a “recurrence of the avoidable incident that claimed the life of our valuable footballer, Izu Joseph.”

Nigerian troops are deployed to the Niger delta where militants have been attacking oil facilities since the start of the year, cutting output and hammering government revenue at a time of low crude prices.

PoliticsChibok Girls: Disquiet In The Military Over Release Of Five Boko Haram Commander by abila122(op): 1:20pm On Oct 15, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chibok-girl-release.jpeg

Strong indications have emerged that troops and security personnel involved in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign against Boko Haram are unhappy with the release of five top Boko Haram commanders.

The commanders were said to have been released in exchange for the 21 of the Chibok schoolgirls who regained their freedom on Thursday. Some security personnel, who confided in one of our correspondents, said that while the return of the girls is worth celebrating, those in the armed services are not pleased with what Nigeria gave in exchange for the girls.

Investigations revealed that the military expressed reservations about the swap which saw the release of five terrorist commanders in exchange for the 21 girls.

Troops and some military commanders are further worried by the fact that the release of terrorist commanders could impact negatively on the ongoing campaign to flush out the insurgents from the North-East.

It was further gathered that some of the troops were not happy that Boko Haram commanders, who had killed civilians and security personnel, were traded for the girls.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, reportedly said on Wednesday that the Army had rescued over two million captives from the Boko Haram sect to date.

The Chief of Civil Military Relations of the Nigerian Military, Maj.-Gen. Peter John, said this while representing Buratai at a recent event organised by the Coalition of Civil Society Groups to mark the United Nations World Peace Day.

The Army, which is leading other services in the fight against the insurgency in the North-East, has been engrossed in the search for the Chibok girls.

Investigations, however, revealed that senior military figures in strategic places only knew of the release of the girls when the news broke on Thursday.

However, a top military figure said that the information on the negotiation for the release of the Chibok girls was not meant to be known to the public.

The source said the negotiation was purely the responsibility of the political leadership.

This, he said does not in any way foreclose, the ongoing military operation in the area.

The source said, “You must understand that it is not all information that we release to people. The lives of those girls were at stake. Negotiations securely rest on the shoulders of political leaders, but that does not mean that military operations will not continue. We must protect the civilian populace from attacks and build confidence in the citizenry.

“It was a political decision; we are under the political leadership. We derive our mandate from the constitution as provided for by democratic governance.

“The military action must continue and it is going on as planned. We are working round the clock, in concert with other security agencies, to ensure that the remaining girls are also rescued.”

Our correspondent could not get the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, to comment on the story as calls to his mobile telephone line did not connect.
