Tekno has been disqualified from the Headies. The singer who was nominated for the ‘Next Rated’ has been kicked off the list.

The category will now be tightly contested by Ycee, Aramide, Humblesmith and Mr Eazi, as the ‘Pana’ hit star misses out on the chance.

According a letter sent by the Headies management to Tekno’s record label Tekno lost out on his spot due to his refusal to honour the category and support the campaign.Nominees are expected to attend promo activities for the event, and also take part in promotion for the category sponsor, Hyundai. Tekno failed to submit himself for engagements, promo campaign photos and more.

Tekno had earlier rubbished the Headies Awards when he was announced in the category. He took to Instagram to say “‘Next rated after how many years! Let’s be honest pls”.

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha’, has revealed that his decision to retire early from active football, was due to lack of enough playing time.

Okocha made the shock decision to hang up his boots in 2008 at 34.“I must confess that [not getting a lot of playing time] was one of the main reasons why I retired from playing at a very young age,” Okocha told media men at a press conference organised by Star Times.

“I believe that it is not worth it to train from Monday to Friday just to have 20 minutes on the pitch or sit on the bench on Saturday. I am very competitive.”

The midfielder who last represented Nigeria in 2006, made 75 appearances for the Eagles and scored 14 times.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has directed all the principal officers at the Nigerian Army headquarters, Abuja, to spend the Yuletide in Sambisa Forest and other frontlines in Borno State where the troops are stationed.

Buratai said this on Tuesday at a workshop on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System for the Nigerian Army in Abuja.

He added that the move was to boost the morale of the troops.He said, “We must understand that seamless and regular payment of personnel salaries and allowances is an essential ingredient for the sustenance of the morale of the troops.

“In this regards, I have directed the principal staff officers at the army headquarters and the commanders to celebrate the Yuletide with the troops in the theatres of operations. This will help to boost the morale of the soldiers, consolidate on the operations and help our decision to eliminate the insurgents from the North-East.”

The Army chief said the IPPIS was to ensure that payment of salaries of soldiers keyed into the directive of the Federal Government of having an integrated system.

He stated, “The migration of the military’s payroll into the IPPIS is in compliance with the directive of the Federal Government. It is an integral part of the macro-economic public sector financial reforms.

“The objectives of the IPPIS are to ensure transparency, accountability and to improve the effectiveness of payroll administration. I have directed all the steps to be taken to direct our payroll into the IPPIS.”

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who was represented at the event by a director, Muhammed Dikwa, said 400 military personnel had been enrolled on the IPPIS.

Adeosun added, “The system has to do with the military personnel’s pensions and associated records. It is a centralised account of government where all the personnel remit funds and they can access it when it is due.

“The IPPIS dates back to 2007 and we have enrolled 400 personnel from the military departments and agencies.

“We have held a series of meetings to discuss the roadmaps and hopefully, by next year, there will be a full migration of the military to the IPPIS. This will bring about improvements in the salary and pension administration of the Nigerian Army.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra, on Monday, warned President Muhammadu Buhari to ‘stay clear’ of the South-East.

The President is slated to attend the opening session of the South-East Economic Summit in Enugu on Thursday.But IPOB, in a statement entitled, ‘Muhammadu Buhari must stay clear of Biafra land or have himself to blame for the outcome of any such visit,’ told the President to cancel the planned visit.

The secessionist group, in a statement signed by its spokespersons, Emma Nmezu (a lawyer) and Dr. Clifford Iroanya, equally warned Igbo governors and other political leaders against hosting Buhari in Enugu or any other part of the South-East.

IPOB warned that the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and other leaders should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order in the state if Buhari went ahead to visit the Coal City on December 22.

The pro-Biafran group alleged that Buhari was a ‘killer and persecutor’ of Igbo and should not be allowed to visit the geopolitical zone.

The statement read in part, “The Indigenous People of Biafra have received information that Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) will be visiting Enugu on the 22nd of December, 2016. We object totally to this visit.

“We warn that any governor or Igbo politician that receives Buhari in Enugu will have himself or herself to blame. We make it public that should there be a breakdown of law and order in Enugu on the 22nd of December, greedy Igbo politicians will have themselves to blame.

“Any Igbo governor or politician that is found among those hobnobbing with Buhari becomes an enemy of the people and shall pay dearly for it.”

IPOB also demanded an investigation into the Amnesty International report, which accused the army of mass killing of Biafra activists.

The group urged all pro-Biafra activists to be in Enugu on December 22 to show their anger over Buhari’s visit.

For the first time in five months, Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have returned to the $25 billion it was before plunging to an 11-year-low of $24.76 billion earlier in 2016.

As at yesterday, December 16, 2016, the reserves, which shows the state of the country’s finances in other currencies, rose to $25,043,149,161, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Since the introduction of the new foreign exchange regime, the CBN has said the inflow of foreign exchange into the Nigerian economy, had been on the rise, with hopes of beating demand.

But as the foreign reserve increases, the naira has however remained “immune” to the rise in foreign exchange, with the naira sliding to 487 against the dollar at the parallel market on Friday.

The British pound and euro, went for N605 and N510 respectively. The official side of the market traded a dollar for N315 on Friday.

Tsunami warnings were issued for several nations on Saturday after a major 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and the US Geological Survey said.

The PTWC said hazardous tsunami waves could hit coastal areas of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Nauru, and the Solomon Islands, while New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defence issued a warning for all of the country’s coast.The earthquake struck 60 km to the east of Taron, New Ireland, at 8.51 pm local time (1051 GMT) at a depth of some 75 km, the USGS said.

The quake was originally recorded at 8.0 before being revised down to 7.9. “Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking…some casualties and damage are possible,” the USGS said on its website as it issued a yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities and losses.

Quakes are common near Papua New Guinea, which lies on the 4,000-kilometre-long Pacific Australia plate, which forms part of the “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

In 2013 the neighbouring Solomon Islands were hit by a devastating tsunami after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake rattled the region. That tsunami left at least 10 people dead, destroyed hundreds of homes and left thousands of people homeless.

The United States has announced a donation of nearly $92m as additional humanitarian assistance to people affected by the Boko Haram insurgency and severe food insecurity in the North-East and the Lake Chad Basin region.
With this donation, the US said it had provided more than $291m in humanitarian assistance in the 2016 fiscal year to people affected by Boko Haram-related conflicts.

The US continued to be the single largest humanitarian donor to the region, a statement on Wednesday in Abuja from the Information Office of the US Embassy stated.

“This new funding to United Nations and Non-Governmental Organisation partners will help tens of thousands of people receive critically needed humanitarian assistance, including food, water, shelter, and services to address acute hygiene, protection and nutritional needs,” the statement added.

The statement hinted that the insurgency had left more than 6.4m people in need of emergency food assistance and displaced 2.6m people in Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad.

It said that the United Nations estimated an additional $1bn was needed to meet the humanitarian needs of people in 2017.

The US called on other donors to contribute additional humanitarian assistance for the millions of people in the region whose lives had been affected by Boko Haram.

President Muhammadu Buhari, has promised to pay all outstanding bonuses and allowances to the Super Falcons within 48 hours, after they staged a protest to the National Assembly on Wednesday morning.

A High Court in Uyo has ordered a former senator from Akwa Ibom State, Anietie Okon, to pay N100,000 as damages to a newspaper vendor, Ndifreke Etim, whom he assaulted last year in Uyo.

Mr. Etim, who walks around the city of Uyo, hawking newspapers, had told the court that Mr. Okon slapped him multiple times inside Government House, Uyo, in September last year.The assault occurred around the state banquet hall where the vendor had gone with the hope of making quick sales during the swearing-in of a new chairman of Akwa Ibom State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Mr. Etim claimed that three able-bodied men, who may have been Mr. Okon’s bodyguards, stood by to watch as the former senator kept slapping him.
“When he finished slapping me, he accused me of stealing his wallet.

But God knows I am not a thief, I sell newspapers to take care of myself and my family,” Mr. Etim had told newsmen in November, shortly after the incident.
“He didn’t even search me to see if I had his wallet on me or not.”

The victim, backed by the Newspaper Distributors Association of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State chapter, filed a civil suit against the former senator.
“I didn’t really think of reporting the case to the police; I wanted it sorted out in court,” said the vendor.

The court, presided over by Justice Winifred Effiong, held that the action of the former senator was degrading, and that it was against Mr. Etim’s right to the dignity of his person as guaranteed by Section 34(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as the African Charter on human and people’s right.

The court, besides granting an order that Mr. Okon should pay N100,000 as damages to Mr. Etim, also granted an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the former senator or his agents from further breaching of the applicant’s fundamental human rights.

It also ordered the former senator to pay additional N50, 000 as cost of the litigation to Mr. Etim.

“I am glad that the court has been bold enough to tell the senator that what he did against me was wrong,” Mr. Etim told newsmen. “It’s not about the money.”

The Lagos State Police Command says it has discovered a fake embassy operating in Lagos where many innocent members of the public had allegedly been defrauded.

It was gathered that policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) had swooped on the ‘embassy’ and arrested two Chinese and two Nigerians.It was learnt that the fake embassy was located at Golden Point and Suite on Duduyemi Street in Ejigbo, Lagos.

The RRS said the Chinese – Liu Honyang, 47; and Sun Xinai, 49 – and their Nigerian collaborators – Oriyomi Olawale, 47 and Desmond Chinedu, 25 – had been swindling Nigerians who had planned to travel out of the country.

It was learnt that the suspects issued mainly Trinidad and Tobago’s visas.

The RRS said the Trinidad and Tobago embassy in the country had confirmed the visas to be fakes, while disowning the two Chinese.

A RRS source revealed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, directed the squad to act on the intelligence reports received from some victims of the ‘embassy.’

He said, “Some RRS policemen had lodged in the hotel for nine days, watching and monitoring the activities of the suspects before their eventual arrest.”

Some people, who claimed to be victims of the fraud, stormed the RRS headquarters on Sunday to write their statements against the suspects.

One of the victims, Adekunle Adefuye, said he met them through one of their agents, one Dorcas Slyver.

He said, “She is a daughter to my brother’s pastor in Abeokuta, Ogun State. I told her about my intention and zeal to travel to the United States. She told me to come to Lagos that she could procure the American visa for me.

“On getting to Lagos, she took me to the Chinese and I was advised to travel to Trinidad and Tobago. They said I would secure employment with at least $3,000 salary.

“I paid a total sum of N1.3m in installment for the process, including visa processing and flight fare.”

He said he was arrested immediately he got to Trinidad and Tobago on October 19, 2016, by the country’s immigration officers for coming into the country with a fake visa.

“I was arrested with another Nigerian. We spent two days with the police. They treated us like criminals trying to enter the country illegally. We were deported on October 22, 2016, and arrived in Nigeria the following day,” he added.

Another victim, Rasheed Ololade, said he paid N1.3m.

“I was fortunate to escape being jailed in Trinidad and Tobago for coming into the country with fake documents.

“They beat me up and starved me for two days. I was lucky to have been deported,” he added.

Another victim, Friday Owah, said he just paid N600,000 before the arrest.

He said, “I was introduced to them by one man, Mr. Oscar. They promised to secure the visa for me within two weeks.”

Another victim, Lukmon Odeyemi, who claimed to be a footballer, said he parted with N125,000.

But Sun Xinai, the main suspect, said she was unaware that a stamped visa for Trinidad and Tobago was no longer tenable in the country.

However, a response to a letter written by the RRS to the High Commission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, dated December 7, 2016, read in part, “…the mission can categorically confirm that the individual Sun Xinai, who is claiming to be an agent of this mission, is unknown to us.

“Furthermore, this mission does not use the services of an agent in any capacity whatsoever and has never done so in the past either.

“With regard to the authenticity of the attached visas, the mission can also categorically confirm that those visas were not issued at this High Commission and are clearly fraudulent.”

The letter was signed by one Garth Lamsee, the acting High Commissioner.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the police had launched a manhunt for other agents of the fake embassy.

“Members of the public should be wary of visa agents. Anyone who wishes to travel out of the country should direct their applications to the embassies,” she added.

She said the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba,for further investigation.

Tears flowed at the 42nd convocation of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, on Friday when the death was announced of a first-class graduate, Bibilari Elebuibon.

Elebuibon, who was the best in Yoruba Language in the Faculty of Arts, was said to have died in an accident in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, in July 2016.
It became a harvest of tears among his colleagues and some others present when his name was called by the dean of his faculty, Prof. Gbemisola Adeoti, for a prize and the school’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, stepped forward to call for a minute silence in his honour.

Reports said the deceased, who was among the 66 first-class graduates, was a son of a popular Ifa priest in Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon.

Earlier, President Muhammadu Buhari had said the unemployment rate in Nigeria is now worse than it was about a year ago.

The President, who said this at the 42nd convocation of the institution, called on the private sector to complement the efforts of the government in providing jobs for Nigerians to bridge the gap.

The Chancellor of the OAU, who is also the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Ooni of Ife, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, were among the dignitaries present at the ceremony.

The President, who was represented at the ceremony by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Adamu Rasheed, said his administration was working hard to ensure more Nigerian youths were productively engaged.

He said, “In September, 2016, our unemployment rate reached a high value of 17.9 per cent as compared to 9.9 per cent the previous year. I intend to remind you that although this administration is doing its best to provide jobs for the teeming population of Nigerian youths, our efforts still need to be complemented by the private sector.

“We have been bringing on board several entrepreneurship initiatives to create an enabling environment for job creators to not only thrive, but excel.

“Promotion of local products, encouragement of export markets, tapping of indigenous raw materials, etc., are some of the avenues for this to operate. As fresh graduates with invigorating ideas, you are encouraged to forward your proposals under the appropriate parastatals and agencies.”
