PoliticsLagosians Have 8 Days To Pay Their Taxes Or Face Prosecution by abila122(op): 3:40pm On Dec 08, 2016

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service has asked all taxpayers that have yet to fulfil their obligation have between December 1 and 16, 2016, to remit overdue taxes and levies to avoid prosecution.

The Executive Chairman of LIRS, Mr. Ayodele Subair, yesterday stated that the agency had, in the last few months, embarked on massive advocacy and enlightenment programmes, educating Lagos taxpayers on the laws bordering on tax administration and the benefits of paying taxes as and when due.He said, “In spite of the significant decline in the allocation from the federation account, the Lagos State Government is still embarking on massive infrastructural development and renewal. These projects cannot be achieved if taxpayers refuse to discharge their civic responsibility to the state.

“Taxpayers are hereby advised to clear all outstanding payments on or before December 16, 2016, failing which the state government will commence criminal prosecution of offenders in line with relevant provisions of the Personal Income Tax Act, 2004 (As amended).”

The LIRS boss explained that the taxes and levies expected to be remitted to the government within the grace period comprised the Tax Audit Liability of back years, the Personal Income Tax (PAYE, Direct Assessment, Self-Assessment), Withholding Tax, Hotel Occupancy and Restaurants Consumption Tax and Land Use Charge and Ground Rent.

“LIRS has put all the necessary machineries in place to ensure the enforcement of the tax law with effect from December 17, 2016, when the grace period lapses. We advise all taxpayers to comply because the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on taxable persons or corporations that fail to remit their taxes and levies,” Subair added.

PoliticsReps Summon Jibrin Over Fresh Petitions by abila122(op): 6:59pm On Dec 07, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Jibrin.jpg

The House of Representatives has passed a resolution to allow Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin into the National Assembly premises for the purpose of defending himself before the Ethics and Privileges Committee following fresh petitions against him.

This followed a motion by Rep. Ossai Ossai, the Chairman of the Ethics Committee, which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote.Moving the motion, Ossai explained that the motion followed the receipt of two fresh petitions against Jibrin by the National Youth Council.

Ossai said, “The Committee on Ethics and Privileges has commenced investigations into the petitions and it seeks the indulgence of the house to invite Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin.

“It is on the grounds of fair hearing that he will be allowed into the premises of the House for the purpose of defending allegations contained in the petitions.”

Ossai said that the petitions received against Jibrin were on his absenteeism and poor representation of his constituency of Kiru/Bebeji in Kano State and for operating foreign accounts which was in violation of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Rep. Aliyu Madaki (APC-Kano) said that since Jibrin had been suspended and the issue was a subject of litigation, there was no need to consider the motion.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, said that the matter in court did not have anything to do with absenteeism or the foreign accounts said to be operated by Jibrin.

Dogara said, “We don’t know of any case in court as regards operating foreign accounts or absenteeism, but this is in line with fair hearing and I think that is why the motion is here.”

InvestmentChigozie Mbanefo, MMM Nigeria Owner Unmasked by abila122(op): 5:15pm On Dec 02, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Chigozie-Mbanefo.jpg

A Nigerian, who styled himself as Pastor Ernest Chigozie Mbanefo is the mastermind of the suspected Ponzi scheme known as MMM Nigeria.
According to an online report, Mbanefo is based in South Africa.

Nigerian Communications Week said Mbanefo registered the site MMM-Nigeria.net domain on June 7, 2016 about at about 5 pm Nigerian time. NAN quoting NCW And Pageone report written as far back as September said Mbanefo made a single year domain payment. The domain will expire on June 7, 2017.It was also revealed that MMM Nigeria is not part of MMM Global – a Russian company that was responsible for one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes in the 1990s.

MMM Global was founded by Russian politician Sergei Mavrodi, his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi and Olga Melnikova. The name of the company was taken from the first letters of the three founders’ surnames (MMM) But like MMM Global, the Nigerian scheme is also a pyramid marketing scheme where an investor gets a 30 per cent return on investment.

Around the world, MMM is feared. In January 2016 the Chinese government banned MMM on the grounds that it is a pyramid scheme, (Ponzi scheme), and it is not registered in the country (and as a fraudulent scheme cannot be registered.

MMM recently crashed in Zimbabwe: Thousands of ‘Mavrodians’ in Zimbabwe were left in tears when the scheme crashed, losing tens of thousands of their lifetime savings. PageOne gave Mbanefo’s address as 1 ROYAL STREET, LINDBERG PARK, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA.

According to Page One, on the 15th of July, Ernest was awarded a certificate of completion of an online course titled ‘MMM Guiders School’. The certificate was supposedly signed by Sergei Mavrodi himself. He has since given himself the nickname the ‘Super Guider of MMM’.

To share news and information about MMM, Ernest also operates a subdomain ‘news.mmm-nigeria.net. The site praises him and projects him as the leader of the Ponzi Scheme in Nigeria.

“He is described as: MMM Nigeria Super Guider; Pastor Ernest Mbanefo, has been selflessly helping thousands of MMM Nigeria Participants whether or not they fall under his downline structure.

The brain behind the MMM NIGERIA REVOLUTION operation has been working selflessly and tirelessly towards the education, information and proper guidance for the MMM Nigeria Community’ Culled from NAN

PoliticsPanic In Nigeria As Popular Money Doubling Scheme Crashes by abila122(op): 5:04pm On Dec 02, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Ultimate-cycler.jpg

The website of one of the popular ponzi schemes in Nigeria, Ultimate Cycler, has crashed.

This has aggravated fear in the hearts of many who are into similar money doubling scheme, especially the controversial MMM. The ponzi website crashed early Thursday morning, December 1, around 10:30am, shutting out every member from their account. The site first displayed error codes in bold letters, then it proceeded to display another message: “Be right back. We are currently updating the site to give you a more pleasurable experience and will be back online shortly. Our update estimation is to be complete over the next 6 – 12 hours. Thank you, Peter Wolfing.”
Ultimate Cycler is a new ponzi scheme that came just after MMM. This new money doubling scheme claims a promise of better returns on invested money than MMM. The hook for Ultimate Cycler is members get a return of N50,000 after paying N12,500 to a fellow member he or she registered under. Dangers for members who have invested in it or others like MMM is that when such websites go down, chances are that it never comes up again and hence, “investors’” money goes with it.

The website was back up early this morning, Friday, December 2, 2016. According to the scheme’s Twitter account, the website was down because the servers were being upgraded.

Foreign AffairsDonald Trump’s Son, Surrounded By Heavily-armed Guards As He Goes To Play by abila122(op): 5:19pm On Nov 29, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Trumps-Son.jpg

A few armed Secret Service agents and a U.S. Coast Guard boat with a machine gun might seem like excessive security for a young boy’s play date – but not if your name happens to be Barron Trump.

The 10-year-old son of President-elect Donald Trump and wife Melania was spotted playing with a group of children at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida where his family were spending Thanksgiving.Barron was being watched closely by several men who appeared to be Secret Service agents as he mingled with other children on the lawn at the back of his dad’s luxury estate.

At least three men were seen standing within feet of Barron the entire time and they followed the boy wherever he went.

He was dressed in a pair of shorts, a shirt and a red baseball cap just like Trump’s Make American Great Again campaign hat.

At one point, Barron was seen waving and watching on as a coast guard boat sailed past him as he stood on the ocean wall.

The boat had a guard stationed at the front of vessel armed with a massive machine gun as it patrolled back and forth in front of where Barron was playing.

They were part of a contingent of 150 security personnel assigned to watch over the Trump family as they spent their first post-election holiday at the vacation retreat last week, according to NBC News.

PhonesFinally, MTN Increases Prices Of DATA Plans As Demanded By Buhari’s Government by abila122(op): 6:14pm On Nov 28, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Adebayo-Shittu.jpg

Nigeria’s telecommunication giant, MTN, has decided to increase the prices of internet subscription for consumers as mandated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Daily Trust reports that in a broadcast message to its subscribers, MTN declared: “Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st Dec, some MTN data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC to operators. Thank you.”

Feelers reaching NAIJ.com show that the new rate beginning from December 1 could see MTN subscribers paying as much as N1000 for 500 megabytes instead of the about 1.5 gigabytes.

There could be changes for other telecom companies in the country in order to meet the reported proposition by Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank Governor, for a tax from mobile phine users in the country as part of efforts to meet the economic recession.

Adebayo Shittu, the minister of Communication, had defended the proposed 10 percent tax on phone calls, text messages and data saying it would help enhance telecommunication services in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shittu spoke in Osogbo, Osun state, saying: “We have a lot of deficiency in the provision of infrastructure in the telecommunication sector.

“And I believe that those who proposed the bill must have thought that government centrally relies on tax because without tax, government cannot operate.

“We are proposing a workshop on the bill for all stakeholders in telecommunication services, operators and even ordinary man.

“I hope that at the appropriate time, when the figures are out, everybody will appreciate the need for such a tax in which at the end of the day will improve services and make everybody happy.

“Everybody is complaining every day over lack of quality and good services, drop calls and all of that.

“All these are caused by deficiency in infrastructure and Nigerians, I believe that we cannot shy away from what will provide government with resources to improve facilities.”

PoliticsOndo Election: Police Deploy 22 Armoured Vehicles, 20 Gunboats, 2 Helicopters by abila122(op): 1:45pm On Nov 26, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Police.jpg

The police yesterday declared its readiness for today’s governorship election in Ondo State with the deployment of 22 armoured vehicles, 20 gunboats, 2 helicopters.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Joshak Habila, said anyone found inducing voters with money would be arrested, no matter how highly placed. The DIG, who is the ground commander-in-charge of Ondo governorship election, said every arrangement had been made to ensure there were no security breaches.

Habila is being assisted by two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police Paul Okafor of Zone 11 and E. S. Saha of the Air Wing.

Each senatorial zone is headed by a commissioner of police.

The DIG said over 26,000 policemen had been deployed to ensure a smooth election.

According to him, there are 3,009 polling units, each to be manned by at least five policemen to be assisted by men of sister agencies such as the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the army, among others.

He said the 203 wards in the state would be adequately policed.

He said: “The IGP in his magnanimity has given us over 20 gunboats which will take care of the riverine areas. We also have our horses and sniffer dogs that will be used when the need arises.

“Two helicopters have been provided that will take care of the airspace and for surveillance. We have 344 hilux vehicles. More are coming.

“We have 12 additional armoured personnel carriers in addition to the 10 that were on ground.”

Habila said no one should go near a polling unit with more than N5,000. This, he said, is a way of checking voter inducement.

“Our men are motivated to do their job. We’re appealing to Ondo people to come out en masse to cast their votes for the candidates of their choice.

“We’re warning anyone who may have any negative thoughts to perish it because they will surely meet their waterloo,” he said.

He said his men were working in harmony with INEC to ensure that materials got to polling units on time and in safety.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Johnson, added that an inter-agency security committee was set up to ensure maximum security.

He said the DIG met with the Military Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery, as well as Controllers of Prisons, Immigration, the Department of State Services Director, among others.

“All the sister agencies are working together and supporting one another to ensure a hitch-free election,” he said.

He said there would be intensive stop-and-search of vehicles travelling through the highways, such as the Benin-Ore Road, which he said would not be completely locked down.

He said there would be restriction of movement within the state as from 12 am yesterday until about 8pm today to ensure there were no infiltrators.

“Most times we have discovered that elections will dovetail till 8pm or later and you see people misbehaving while the election processes are still ongoing. That is why we appeal to our people to cooperate with us.

“The Inspector-General of Police has done everything that is required to ensure a hitch-free election. Anything that has to do with security is already in place,” he said.

Also yesterday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared its readiness to conduct a hitch-free governorship election in the state.

Just few hours to the much awaited Saturday November 26, 2016 governorship election in Ondo state, the Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria (WITZAN), Ondo chapter, has revealed who will emerge winner.

Reports claim that WITZAN revealed that candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu will win the election. The President of WITZAN, Dr Okhue Iboi, was said to have revealed this after a meeting in Ese Odo area of the state while hailing the members of the group. He went on to say they have the right to practice whatever they want since Nigeria is a secular country. According to him, many Nigerians lambaste them in public but run to them at the back.Iboi said : “This week Saturday’s election in Ondo State is going to be hotly contested between APC, AD, PDP, SDP and the candidate of APC will emerge victoriously. It is unfortunate that many Nigerians are hypocrites. When they hear witches or read about witches, what comes to their mind is evil or darkness. For our own witches group, we are children of light. We are for good.

“Have people forgotten that even in the Bible, there is a story of King Saul who consulted a witch when he was about to go into a battle to enable him know how the battle will go? Again people tend to forget that Nigeria is a secular state; Nigeria doesn’t belong to only Christians and Muslims, the nation is for all faiths.”

PoliticsHouse Of Reps Set To Investigate DSS Over “illegal Activities” by abila122(op): 5:46pm On Nov 23, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/DSS-officers.jpg

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara has revealed why the lower legislative chamber is investigating some activities of Nigeria’s secret police, State Security Service (DSS).

Speaking at a two-day investigative hearing by the ad-hoc committee set up to investigate all cases of invasion of property and arrest of persons for reasons outside the general duties of state security service (SSS), Mr Dogara said the activities of the Directorate of State Security Service of late have raised concerns in the Nigerian polity as to the propriety of the conduct of officials of the service. He said the task of the committee is to make appropriate findings of fact.

“It appears however that the main catalyst for this motion is the manner of the alleged invasion and search of the homes of Supreme Court Justices and other senior justices of superior Courts carried out by officials of the DSS, some of whom were said to be hooded, in the wee hours of the morning recently and the subsequent arrest and indeed prosecution of some of the Judges and Justices,” he said.

Mr Dogara added that “the executive and legislative arms of some State governments have also been affected by these searches and arrests. These incidents have attracted solemn public interest and, therefore, become a matter of urgent national importance. This investigation is Parliament’s response to these wide spread concerns.

The National Security Agencies Act of 1986 which was incorporated into the 1979 and 1999 Constitutionsstates “The State Security Service shall be charged with responsibility for-
(a) the prevention and detection within Nigeria of any crime against the internal security of Nigeria;
(b) the protection and preservation of all non-military classified matters concerning the internal security of Nigeria; and
(c) such other responsibilities affecting internal security within Nigeria as the National Assembly or the President, as the case may be, may deem necessary.”

Citing the above section of the constitution, the Speaker said “It seems that provisions of paragraph (C) above departs from the normal constitutional framework set up by Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Constitution that instituted separation of powers of the three arms of government, as it apparently gives direct legislative powers to the President to enlarge the scope of responsibilities of the SSS relating to internal security within Nigeria.

“Section 6 of the Act goes further to empower the President to issue an Instrument, a subsidiary legislation, on the manner in which the SSS should exercise its powers.”

He enjoin the committee to make relevant findings of fact that will enable the National Assembly initiate the necessary amendments to the National Security Agencies Act and even the Constitution where necessary to ensure conformity with the constitutional design.

He poised that it is untidy it seems, to have multiple agencies exercising similar functions.

“The EFCC already handles issues of corruption and economic crimes in Nigeria. Should the State Security Service also be charged with the same functions?” he asked.

Mr Dogara request that the chairman and members of the committee to consult widely with relevant stakeholders and come up with a Report on the way forward that solves the identified problems.

HealthUnclaimed Corpses Litter Mortuaries In Nigerian Hospitals by abila122(op): 10:09am On Nov 19, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Femi-Atoyebi-Mudiaga-Affe-Femi-Makinde-Success-Nwogu-and-Gbenro-Adeoye.jpg

Numbers of unclaimed corpses are rising in the mortuaries of public hospitals across the country as families abandon the bodies of loved ones, an investigation by Saturday PUNCHhas revealed.

In some cases, it was learnt that families who had spent a lot of money taking care of sick relations, simply abandoned them when they died.
Some mortuary attendants told our correspondents that the relatives of many of such deceased persons no longer pick their calls. Also compounding the number of unclaimed corpses are those of mentally challenged victims who died on the street as well as accident victims and suspected armed robbers killed by security agents.

The situation is so dire in Cross River State that over 1,000 unclaimed corpses are currently in public and private mortuaries in the state, Saturday PUNCH learnt.

Authorities of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital had in 2013 buried over 200 unclaimed corpses in a mass grave.

The Calabar General Hospital in 2015 also buried over 100 corpses for lack of space.

Apart from accident victims, the bulk of corpses were abandoned by dubious relatives who provided fake contact addresses after depositing the dead bodies, it was learnt.

A private mortician operating in Ikom Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Emeka Ben-Chima, decried the health risk constituted by the high number of corpses abandoned in mortuaries across the state.

Ben-Chima said that over 300 corpses had been left unclaimed in his mortuary and others for several years with some deposited as far back as 2010.

He said, “Some of the dead bodies are from Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states. Others are from Cameroon and Cross River State which were deposited by people who said they were their relatives but they failed to collect them after many years. We tried to trace the addresses they gave us but discovered that those addresses were fake and the phone numbers they gave too were fake.”

Unlike the cases of UCTH and the General Hospital in Calabar, Ben-Chima said he was afraid of burying the bodies in a mass grave because the owners of the corpses might appear some day to demand for the bodies of their relatives.

In Ekiti State for instance, the situation has become so bad that the state government announced over the radio one week ago that families who had unclaimed corpses in the government hospitals in the state should come for them immediately as the situation had become worse.

Raising the alarm over the situation in the mortuary of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe, said that unclaimed corpses in the mortuary had become a threat to the smooth running of the facility.

Ogundipe said such unclaimed bodies had occupied the available space in the mortuary and was impeding service delivery.

In a similar case, a spokesperson for the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Enugu, Mr. Cyril Keleze, said the situation in the facility’s mortuary had become so bad that morticians who maintain the bodies were now finding it difficult to manage because of the congestion.

“In this kind of situation, we’ll get the permission of the government to go ahead and bury such corpses in order to decongest the mortuary,” Keleze said. In Oyo State, a health worker at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the situation as a constant worry for the management of the hospital’s mortuary.

The source said it had become common for families who could not afford to pay mortuary and hospital bills to simply abandon the corpses of their deceased relations.

Another source in the hospital said UCH authorities had made announcements in the media this year, calling on families of the deceased persons to come for the corpses.

The source said, “The law says that operators of public mortuaries must place advertisements in a major newspaper two or three times before classifying bodies as abandoned corpses. After the first advertisement, you have to wait for certain number of days before placing a reminder, after which you can go ahead and dispose the bodies. Sometimes, a third reminder may be necessary depending on the number of the corpses involved.

“The management of UCH placed advertisements in the newspapers to announce that there were abandoned corpses in the hospital mortuary. There were few responses but many bodies still had to be disposed. There have been two batches of such disposal this year but I cannot verify the number of corpses involved. Without conducting such exercise, the mortuary would be crowded and unhygienic.”

The situation is the same in Osun State where the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo had to organise a mass burial for some unclaimed corpses last week.

In Kwara State, hospital authorities are finding it difficult to track down many of the relations of the deceased as the contact numbers of many of them have remained switched off.

The Director-General, Kwara State Hospitals Management Bureau, Dr. Olubunmi Jetawo-Winter, told one of our correspondents on Friday that two of the state government mortuaries were facing the problem of unclaimed corpses.

She said the hospital management bureau had made concerted efforts to contact affected families to claim the corpses, but have been largely unsuccessful.

According to her, the hospitals have been incurring the costs of preserving the corpses without knowing when the families would ever come for them.

To find a solution to this problem, Jetawo-Winter said the hospital management had notified the Ministry of Justice and the Kwara State Police Command to help track down the families. But in the meantime, she said the bureau would continue to make public announcements.

Our correspondent in Ondo State also reported that the mortuary in the specialist hospital in the state capital, Akure, was filled with abandoned corpses.

An attendant in the hospital, who pleaded anonymity, said some of the corpses were identified but that the families had simply refused to claim them.

“But we cannot dispose them unless the government approves their disposal. When it is time for the disposal, the government would announce its intention in the media and a deadline would be set,” the attendant said.

However, findings showed that that this situation does not affect hospitals in the northern part of the country where Muslims are required to inter the bodies of deceased persons within a day of their death.

Foreign AffairsRead What Trump Plans To Do To North Korea Over Nuclear Threat by abila122(op): 9:52am On Nov 19, 2016

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s national security adviser says North Korea’s nuclear program would be given a high priority under the new administration, a South Korean official who held talks with him said on Saturday.

Michael Flynn, one of Trump’s closest advisers, also said he would work to strengthen the U.S. alliance with South Korea, calling the relationship “vital,” the South’s deputy presidential national security adviser Cho Tae-yong was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.
Cho was leading a South Korean delegation to the United States to meet with key advisers to the president-elect to discuss the two countries’ response to the North’s pursuit of nuclear weapons in defiance of international sanctions.

Cho spoke to South Korean reporters in Washington following the meeting with Flynn, Yonhap said.

Flynn is a retired Army lieutenant general and a military intelligence veteran of three decades who has championed Trump’s promises to take a more aggressive approach to terrorism. His appointment as national security adviser this week does not require Senate confirmation.

The North conducted its fourth and fifth nuclear tests this year under young leader Kim Jong Un, who has vowed to build a nuclear arsenal and ballistic missiles to deliver them.

The U.N. Security Council has held discussions to adopt a toughened new sanctions resolution following the North’s Sept. 9 nuclear blast.

U.S. President Barack Obama has been criticized by Congressional Republicans that his policy of “strategic patience” was a failure and that he must make full use of sanctions authorities given to him by Congress.

Trump pledged his commitment to defend South Korea under an existing security alliance during a phone call with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Yonhap said last week.
Trump had suggested during the election campaign he would be willing to withdraw U.S. military stationed in South Korea unless Seoul paid a greater share of the cost of the deployment. There are about 28,500 U.S. troops based in South Korea in combined defense against North Korea.

EducationASUU Will Suspend Strike On Monday – FG by abila122(op): 3:25pm On Nov 18, 2016

The Federal Government has expressed optimism that the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) by Monday at the latest.

This was made known by Dr. Clement Illo, who is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, while speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

It can be recalled that a meeting ASUU held with the Senate President, the Committee on Labour and the Committee on Education, among others ended in deadlock on Wednesday.
Illo however called the meeting as “a very positive step” and stated that the strike could be suspended over this weekend.

“It is still work in progress and we are still meeting tomorrow (Friday) and on Monday,” he said.

“But the indications are very positive that the issues will be resolved as quickly as possible. We are sure of success on Friday but if we did not, then we will definitely succeed by Monday.

“So, the possibility like I said of suspending the strike is still very positive because there is high possibility that the strike would be suspended.

“This is because the issues have been very well articulated and already, there is a focus on how it will be resolved.”

He also promised that everything will be done, to ensure the agreement is implemented as quickly as possible.

Illo added: “like I said, it is very positive, why should government not implement something it signed in good faith?”

PoliticsAPC To Fayose: You Can’t Escape Scrutiny In Bailout Disbursement by abila122(op): 5:41pm On Nov 17, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/lai-Mohammed-fayose.jpg

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has told Governor Ayodele Fayose to stop playing pranks to avoid the scrutiny of the Senate Committee on Local Governments in the disbursement of the bailout cash approved to the state by the Federal Government.

It said the bailout is different from the regular federal allocation that cannot be monitored by the allocating authority, stressing that the governor cannot hide under the constitution to abuse a special intervention scheme that specifically insisted on a set of rules for a strict application of the funds for the purpose for which it was approved.Fayose had written the Federal Government, citing separation of power and independence of the state in the appropriation and application of federal funds allocated to the state governments, insisting that fiscal independence by the states would not allow his government to open its books to the Senate Committee touring the states to investigate how the bailout cash was spent.

But Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement that Fayose was playing with facts and the law to avoid scrutiny on how he spent the special funds specifically approved to pay the backlog of salaries, pensions and other entitlements to former political office holders.

He said the governor’s “recalcitrant action” was a confirmation of the party’s earlier allegation that he had misappropriated the fund.

Describing Fayose’s stance as laughable, Olatunbosun said: “Fayose cannot pretend that he did not know that the Federal Government attached certain terms and conditions to the bailout before he collected it and we wonder why a governor that agreed to the terms is now refusing to explain how he spent the money to establish transparency in the application of such terms.

“The bailout is like taking a bond that is programme-specific and Fayose knew this before he took the bailout and we wonder why he is now behaving as if the bailout is a Father Christmas gift that doesn’t require accountability.

“It is now glaring that Fayose has many things to hide, as we had on several occasions cried that he had diverted the bailout to his private pocket instead of using it to pay salaries as the main condition attached to the loan.”

He conceded that the House of Assembly had oversight functions over statutory allocations, explaining, however, that the bailout was a dedicated fund approved by the National Assembly for the Central Bank of Nigeria to disburse to states owing their workers.”Since the National Assembly has oversight functions on the CBN and other federal agencies, it follows, therefore, that it can monitor how the bailout is spent by asking questions.

“In fact, one of the conditions attached to the disbursement of the bailout is that its disbursement by the benefitting states shall be monitored by the CBN and this means the National Assembly can also monitor,” he explained.

Accusing the governor for being motivated by “his tradition of fraud and muddling up of facts” by quoting irrelevant sections of the constitution to escape the scrutiny of the National Assembly, Olatunbosun said it was regrettable that Fayose was owing just one month salary of less than N2b when he took N9.6b bailout, but paid only one month salary and refused to pay pensioners, leave bonus and severance allowances of former political office holders as approved in the protocols of the bailout approval.

He said it was the knowledge of the governor’s conduct for alleged fraudulent practices that forced the party to raise the alarm on many occasions calling on the CBN and anti-corruption agencies to force Fayose to explain how he spent the balance of the money after paying just one month salary.

Olatunbosun insisted that Fayose must also explain to the EFCC how he misappropriated the balance of the bailout, including the World Bank’s grants in dollars for core subjects and the rural postings allowance, which he changed to naira and allegedly kept a part totalling over N600m to himself.

He added: “Fayose must also explain how he spent N850 million that was supposed to be returned to government account as PAYEE money deducted from workers’ accounts, but which was diverted to a private account in Sterling Bank with the governor as the sole signatory.

“The PAYEE account as a result of deductions from workers is not up to N850 million in actual fact, but the figure was inflated so that the balance would end up in private pocket while the fake figure is in government’s books.

CelebritiesDavido’s Reaction After Simi Begged Him For A Pair Of Shoes Is Everything And Mo by abila122(op): 5:29pm On Nov 17, 2016

It appears the ‘chemistry’ between popular musicians Davido and Simi has moved from their song together (Maga to Mugu) to real life.
Here’s what happened. Simi revealed on Twitter to Davido that she was in love with a pair of Blue shoes she saw on his Snapchat account and the self-styled Omo Baba Olowo responded that she should send him her shoe size.

Now, given Davido’s penchant for giving gifts, it’s likely that Simi has already taken delivery of the shoes.

PoliticsShocking! Alaba Marketer Says ‘there Is Nothing Like Piracy In Nigeria’ by abila122(op): 4:42pm On Nov 17, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Alaba-Market.jpg

The issue of piracy is something that has plagued the Nigeria entertainment industry for years. Actors, musicians, and even artists have constantly moaned that Piracy was draining their industry of legitimate monies they should be making.

So far, the government has done almost nothing to tackle this menace. One place that has become synonymous with piracy is the popular Alaba market located in Lagos. Marketers that operate there are considered ‘small gods’ because they control the distribution channels that a musician or filmmaker desperately needs to make money off their projects.

One of such marketers named Kingsley was a guest on a yet to be aired episode of The Gist hosted by popular media personality Emma Ugolee and what he revealed about Alaba is shocking, to say the least.

Mr. Kingsley also said artistes like Phyno ‘pay’ him to help publicise their music

Asked what the role of the Alaba marketer is, he said “Alaba marketers are there to help musicians make their music be heard everywhere. Even abroad.” Going further, Mr. Kingsley said “There is nothing like piracy because these musicians beg us to help market their music. For example, Phyno has been calling me to help him but if he sees me today, he would do as if he does not know me.”

CrimeSee Why This Lawyer Was Sentenced To 4 Years Imprisonment by abila122(op): 4:19pm On Nov 17, 2016

The Federal High Court Kano presided over by Justice Fatu Riman has convicted and sentenced one Yakubu Na-Allah, a senior lawyer to four years imprisonment without option of fine for offences of money laundering to the tune of N50 million.

The convict was arraigned by the EFCC on 14 January, 2013 on a two-count charge of money laundering.
Upon arraignment, Mr. Na-Allah pleaded not guilty and subsequently trial commenced on June 26, 2013 in which the prosecution called seven witnesses and tendered fifteen exhibits.

On February 1, 2013 the properties of the convict were attached by the EFCC following an interim forfeiture order issued by the same court.

Mr. Na-Allah’s journey to prison started when the commission received a petition that the 68-year-old Kano Lawyer, allegedly duped two of his clients to the tune of N50 million part of the money recovered for his client in a case they filed against Ministry of Solid Minerals where the convict represented them.

The petition alleged that the convict after winning the case and the sum of N90 million recovered, gave his client only N30 million and converted the rest of the money to his personal use.

However, investigation by the EFCC revealed that the convict used part of the proceeds to acquire a palatial mansion in Sharada area of Kano.

In his judgment, Justice Riman ruled that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and subsequently convicted Mr. Na-Allah.

The prosecution counsel, M.S Abubakar urged the court to consider the forfeiture of properties acquired by the convict with the proceed of his crime.

Justice Riman sentenced the convict to serve two years imprisonment on each of the two count charge and also ordered that the attached property of the convict worth N50 million at the time it was purchased be forfeited to the Federal Government.
The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he convict will only spend a maximum two years in jail.

PoliticsREVEALED: 3 Reasons Why I Am In Morocco – President Buhari by abila122(op): 7:36pm On Nov 15, 2016

Following outcry about his trip to Morocco for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, President Muhammadu Buhari has explained to Nigerians his reasons for going to the conference and why Nigerians should also be concerned about climate change.

President Buhari arriving in Marrakesh, Morocco on Monday, November 14

President Buhari arrived in Morocco late on Monday, November 14 and in a short statement made available to NAIJ.com on Tuesday, November 15, the president listed reasons for his attendance thus:

Commitment to reducing emissions

The president says he is Morocco to let the world know that Nigeria is committed to reducing carbon emissions in Nigeria. The country also wants to raise the target of 20% reduction by 2030 to 45% by the same year with adequate help.

“Today I will deliver Nigeria’s Statement at the Opening Plenary of the United Nations Climate Change Conference #COP22 High Level Segment. In it I will reiterate Nigeria’s commitment to reducing emissions by 20% by 2030, and our intention to raise this target to 45% with the International Community’s support.”

Lake Chad issue

The president said his attendance is also to find answer to how Nigeria will survive the problem with Lake Chad which is drying up.

“People ask why should Nigeria bother about Climate Change. The answer is that it is a matter of survival for us. The Lake Chad has shrunk to 10% of its original size over the last few decades, affecting the lives and livelihood of more than 5 million people,” President Buhari said.

Heavy flooding

Another reason for the president’s trip to Morocco is to also find an answer to the heavy flooding that has hit various parts of Nigeria.

“Elsewhere in the country a series of devastating floods has afflicted us since 2012, affecting more than 2 million people,” he said.

The president wrapped up his statement by saying climate change has become a critical issue that Nigeria must tackle for the sake of the country’s future.

“There are more examples of the negative effects of Climate Change. Each one of them is a reminder why we should take it seriously; why we should build a society that is aware of and responsive to Climate Change. We do it for our today, and our tomorrow,” President Buhari concluded.

Meanwhile, President Buhari on Monday, November 14, received the recovery report which is prepared to steer the nation out of the economic recession.

The report, which has been labelled as ambitious, was prepared by the Economic Management Team (EMT) in collaboration with the Ministries of Budget and National Planning, Finance, the Presidency and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

CelebritiesMUST READ: Ex-miss Anambra Breaks Silence, Reveals What Led To Controversial Sex by abila122(op): 11:57am On Nov 12, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Miss-Anambra-535x437.jpg

Miss Chidinma Okeke, the immediate past winner of the Miss Anambra beauty pageant, has opened up on the controversies surrounding her leaked sex tape as well as those involved in the whole drama.

In an interview with The Nation, the 20-year-old lady explained how she was lured into producing the sex tape and was blackmailed with the video, hence her reduction to a life of near ‘slavery’ in the hands of the organisers of the pageant.
“Early last year, the ABS advertised for the Miss Anambra beauty pageant. I heard of it and went to make enquiry.

“My roommate was also interested, but one of the organisers told me to apply. I told them I was not interested but the man insisted that I might win the competition. He also promised to give me the form for free if I indicated interest, and he did when I agreed to contest.
“But one Jane told me that before a winner would be declared, there were certain things to be done, including the (sex) video. I consented after some persuasion from the organisers. I later went for the contest at the Marble Arch Hotels in Awka, and I was declared winner with a Kia Rio vehicle as star prize,” the naive lady explained.

On how the sex tape became an issue between her camp and the organisers, Miss Okeke noted amid tears in her eyes that, “When I went for my car after the contest, the organisers brought out a contract form for me to sign, but I told them I wanted to contact my lawyer to see it. I was not given the opportunity to do so.

“What they kept telling me was that if I insisted on not signing the contract or wanted to contact my lawyer, they would release the video.

“At that point, I became uncomfortable and signed the contract to avoid such embarrassment, and the car was released to me from where it was packed within the premises of ABS.

“From that moment, I became a slave to them. On October 11, 2016, they called me to come and make presentations inside the office of one the organisers. After that, the man excused some people in that room and showed me the video again.

“They told me to drop my car and removed my crown from me. I told them I would take the car as stipulated in the contract. They insisted I should pack it in the premises of (ABS).

“I told my uncle in Abuja about the situation. My uncle called them and asked them to release my car to me. Instead, they forwarded the video to him as part of the blackmail. That was what happened.”

Despite the fact that the young girl denied ever being a lesbian, her parents have continued to express shock at the turn of events.

The pair, identified as Sir Jeremiah and Lady Nora Okeke, still remained in shock as at the time they granted the interview with the father particularly emphasizing on the fact that the organisers just played on the daughter’s “age and naivety to deny her whatever monetary gains she made while serving as Miss Anambra.”

He added: “How can a beauty queen borrow money to pay her driver, even when she is supposed to be receiving a monthly salary?

“I cannot say all that I heard or saw. Why was she not paid her winning prize of one million naira fully? Rather, they paid her on instalmental basis. And up until today, the money has not been completely paid.

“They have rubbished her and rubbed the family’s name in the mud. But we have united as a family, praying seriously for my daughter and for the people behind this wicked act to be exposed.

“My family at first agreed not to tell me about the whole thing, because I am hypertensive. But they decided otherwise when things got out of hand. I told them this issue will not kill me because I have had worse experiences while in business years back.

“My God, as always, will answer me and expose the truth in no distant time. I won’t say much because the damage has already been done.

“Chidinma is a small girl who does not know anything, hence, she fell into a trap that was too heavy for her to shoulder. But I thank God she is recovering.”

Recently, there was a report by a citizen reporter, Martin Nworah, who claimed that the police had arrested the guys behind the leaked sex tape at Enugu.

According to him, the guys are allegedly part of a 7-member gang who specialises in blackmailing ladies and they are allegedly the guys who leaked the viral lesbian sex video of ex-Miss Anambra, Chidinma Okeke.

Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has called for peace in the United States of America following multiple protests in cities across the country over Donald Trump‘s emergence as its 45th president.

Jonathan made this known in a Facebook post on Friday. The former president said:
I appeal to Americans who are protesting on the streets after the emergence of Donald J. Trump as President-elect to give peace a chance. Democracy is all about accommodation and the United States is a model for the free world.

All democrats must value the process of democracy more than the product.

While exercising their rights, I plead with the Great American people not to do anything that will impinge on the old and cherished values and traditions of the US on democratic ethos.
