PoliticsAnd Buratai Shakes Naija With Shekau’s Capture by AbiolaFawole(op): 5:10pm On Apr 17, 2017
He went into an eerie state, after a hard day’s work, stretching himself on his camp bed. His heart shook violently and beads of sweat covered his forehead, but eventually fell asleep. The theatre commander in Maiduguri, Gen. Charlie was furious all day about earlier events, as he sat for dinner in his half-lit shack before retiring for a short rest. He tried as much as possible to cast his mind off the unfortunate violent encounter between some of his men and the police in Dama. “We are all here for a common mission; to protect our people.” “So, how can we be fighting ourselves?” “What would Madawaki Soja think; what impression have we created about us to him? Entirely in another world, Captain Sabo knocked and entered. “Evening Sir,” he greeted, standing erect in the usual military fashion. Gen. Charlie stared at him in the face and replied almost inaudibly, “Evening, and what can I do for you, officer?” he asked. “Permission to make bonfire in the camp, sir,” the Captain replied. His boss waved at him gently, signifying his approval. The junior officer saluted and hurried out. Gen. Charlie relapsed back to his sickening thoughts. “Perhaps, we have over stayed in this Boko Haram insurgency war,” he said. “And we are still scheming to execute the last part of this national assignment; to capture their leader, Abubakar Shekau.” “But he cannot escape us,” “We shall capture him and parade him alive to Nigerians before we hand him over for prosecution,” he said with arms in the air. This feeling gave Gen. Charlie some relief. He felt how excited Nigerians would be at his capture. They would be happier than the day the notorious armed robber, Anini was captured. We shall get him and soon too. He now remembered that a little boy had hinted that Shekau was badly wounded during soldiers’ invasion of Sambisa forest. But he escaped and was receiving treatment at the home of a local herbalist in Timbulo village, a border community in Niger. He was secretly trailed, but had relocated to an unknown destination. “We shall intensify the search, this week,” he muttered aloud. He stood up, grabbed his pistol and headed for the door, as his body guards rushed behind him. He went to the venue of the bonfire carnival in the camp and addressed troops. He sent various battalions out on night surveillance and patrols in different locations. When the first batch of troops returned the next day to replenish; the second had already taken over from them. The Battalion led by Col. Asabo strayed into the neighboring Niger republic beyond Timbulo village under the cover of the MNJTF. A local resident had informed of suspected terrorists camp, some 60 kilometers east of Timbulo village. But Nigerien soldiers refused to accompany them. Timbulo itself was a deserted, swampy, greenish mesh of vast lands in the desert nation. For hours as they traversed the fields, only birds in the air whispered. Trees and grasses blossomed all year round. It was difficult to sight a hamlet, much more a settlement. These isolated hamlets were shelters of professional hunters, who sometimes spend months in the forests hunting their game for money. Each of the hamlets had foodstuff and stockpiled meat, occasionally exported into town. Col. Asabo met a hunter in one of the hamlets and engaged him in a friendly discussion. “Sanu, Mai gida,” the Colonel greeted. The hunter, answered, “Sanu fa, yayah aiki?” The discussion continued in Hausa vernacular. Through it, the soldiers were made to understand the village was called Bolu and aside hunters, even government forest officials dreaded the terrain and never bothered to enforce the law on game reserve in Bolu. It is a complete hunters’ paradise. But through him, Nigerian soldiers were made to understand there was a great medicine man further down the valleys. He was not easily accessible, but once you reach him, it is the end of whatever predicament. Soldiers pleaded with him to lead them to his home. He accepted. Soldiers sensed that approaching the place in daylight might cause any prey to escape or fight back tenaciously. So, tactically, they delayed the journey till dusk; had refreshments together with the hunter. The old man in his late forties began to enjoy the company of soldiers. Col. Asabo had a feeling that if Shekau was really wounded, he might possibly be in the herbalist home. He radio messaged the theatre commander in Maiduguri about the new mission and requested for extension of time for the return of back-up troops. Gen. Charlie granted the request. At dusk, the hunter led the soldiers. The advance team decided to go on foot to a certain point, while military trucks trailed behind at a distance. Though, it was like a life journey, in the thick darkness of the night, to get to the great herbalist home, but the journey was energized and shortened with the lively tales of the hunter. A kilometer to the herbalist yard, its occupants sensed the approach of alien bodies, as powerful torch lights beamed at their direction. A gunshot was fired in the air. And Col. Asabo instantly decoded its strength as beyond what mere hunters would possess for game hunting. He barked orders to his troops to spread round hamlet. Soldiers instantly complied with military precision. He safeguarded the hunter by putting him in one of the military trucks. In no time, they surrounded the hamlet, and the shooting from the antagonistic forces intensified. Soldiers replied, as the occupants who numbered roughly 15 knew they were in danger. Some attempted to sneak an escape but ran into the ambush of Nigerian soldiers. Within 40 minutes, soldiers had captured and demobilized scores of the shooters, invaded the hamlet, and arrested the herbalist and the five persons with him. And behold, they were terrorists and among them was Abubakar Shekau, recognized by his sportive Osama Bin Ladenic beard. Col. Asabo held his throat and pointed a gun on his forehead to pull the trigger. Shekau pleaded passionately, “Dan Allah, please don’t kill me,’ it’s not my fault.” “Whose fault then?” asked Col. Asabo. Asabo overcoming his anger remembered killing Shekau in battle would amount to something extra-judicial and rob Nigerians of the opportunity to see their tormentor alive in confessions. So, he restrained himself and ordered his arrest. Mission accomplished, Shekau was bundled into a waiting military truck and ferried away. An hour later, a military helicopter was waiting in the fields and the suspects were hurled into it and flown into the Command Center, Maiduguri. The camp erupted in wild jubilations, as Gen. Charlie addressed troops. “I think, this assignment is over now,” he yelled. “Yeeeh!!!!, Yeeeh!!!!!, soldiers shouted. “But before anything else, I have informed the COAS, our Leader, Lt.Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai,” he revealed. “He is on his way to this place now,” he said. “Sai Madawaki, Sai Shogaba soja!” the soldiers echoed. Already, news headlines by both local and international media began flashing about the arrest of Abubakar Shekau. CNN flashed; “Nigerian Soldiers Capture, Abubakar Shekau, Nigeria’s Most Wanted Terrorists Kingpin;” Al Jazeera said in news briefs: “At Last Boko Haram Leader, Abubakar Shekau Captured Alive by Buratai,” Daily Trust said, “End of the Road For Abubakar Shekau; and a rider added, “To be paraded in Abuja Soon.” Social media buzzed crazily with the news of his capture. At the Command theatre in Maiduguri, Buratai addressed troops. “I salute your gallantry, your courage and bravery. We are proud of you; Nigerians are proud of you,” he said. “Our Commander–In-Chief of the Naija Armed forces, President Mai Geskiya has sent his compliments to all of you. And he has given us the permission to parade Shekau before Nigerians in Abuja to confirm his capture,” Buratai hinted. Gen. Charlie led his boss, Gen. Buratai to where Shekau and his commanders arrested along with him, after a fierce battle in Bolu village were cooling their heels. On sighting Buratai and even with his knee cap injury partially healed, Shekau summoned the last reserve of energy in his body to sprawl on the spacious floor remorseful and beggarly. “General, I am sorry,” Shekau said in a voice damn too weak. Buratai stood watching him in awe. He said to himself, “so brutal killers dread death this much?” Feeling that his plea for mercy had not snatched the desired attention, Shekau crawled and knelt down before Buratai, bending his wounded knee in pains. Groaning in pains, he said, “It’s the work of the devil.” Tearfully, he continued, “I am sorry for killing my own brothers and sisters. I was so brainwashed into this evil Islamic ideology. Please forgive me. Tell Nigerians, to forgive me. From the bottom of my heart, I am really sorry.” Buratai and his commanders only listened in utmost shock. None uttered a word. Before his capture, they pictured a brave warrior, but the tormentor Shekau was not one. When Shakau saturated himself with the pleas, Buratai, barked orders; take them to Abuja! A week later, a parade ground had been prepared in Wuse, one of Abuja’s busiest areas. Roads were closed kilometers before the market. Security agents were everywhere and only Naija people on foot were allowed access. The afternoon weather was light, breezy and cool. And Shekau and his commanders were laid on a large podium at the center of the market. Nigerians struggled to catch a glimpse of him. There was a surge of people. An aged woman, whose only son was killed when terrorists bombed UN building in Abuja, got to where the disempowered Shekau stood with his gang, muttering some inaudible words, as she spat at his face. Gripped by the emotions of pains, the woman moved to hit Shekau, but was held back by security, as she sobbed loudly. Buratai saw the drama and beckoned to security to allow the pensively aggrieved woman to come to him. Buratai bent down counseling her. Mama, please I know it’s painful, but may you…. Alas, Gen. Charlie kicked himself to wakefulness on his camp bed. His body covered with streams of sweat. “Oh! So it was a dream after all? He exclaimed. But I know it will happen one day. Dreams are realities. Shekau will not escape us. We shall capture him alive, he assured himself. PoliticsPresident Buhari Visit Sambisa Forest, The Former Enclave Of Boko Haram by AbiolaFawole(op): 5:26pm On Mar 24, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari will visit Sambisa Forest, the former enclave of Boko Haram on Monday to declare open the Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship, NASAC 2017. The insurgency group, Boko Haram, who at the peak of it’s siege on the nation occupied towns in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, made the Sambisa Forest their stronghold and strategic headquarters until they were pushed out by the military on Christmas eve, last year. The military had subsequently declared the former game reserve as a proposed site for military institution, building roads into it and kick-starting the new status of Sambisa Forest with the hosting of the annual Small Arms Competition.
The competition which starts on Monday is expected to be hosted by President Muhammadu Buhari. He is to be accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Alhaji Mansur Ali and Service Chiefs, Chief of Defense Staff, General Gabriel Olanisakin, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Sadique and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Obet Ebas. The Chief of Training and Operations, Army, Major General David Amadu, during a press briefing on Friday in Maiduguri to kick-start the NASAC 2017 championship, said the championship would be formally declared open by the President on Monday, March 27, 2017. He said the championship which drew to a close on Friday, March 31st has lined up a chain of activities which would include medical outreach to Bama, Konduga, and Magumeri IDPs camps, educational training for Army Education Corps in Maiduguri , security awareness meetings with the traditional rulers and distribution of relief materials to IDPs within Maiduguri and surrounding towns. Amadu added that the championship was aimed at testing and shaping the intelligence and professional capacity of the Nigerian Army officers and soldiers

Foreign AffairsLondon Parliament Attack Photos by AbiolaFawole(op): 5:09pm On Mar 22, 2017
A police officer has been stabbed and a
suspected assailant shot outside the Houses
of Parliament, shortly after a car is reported
to have rammed into members of the public
on Westminster Bridge.
At least three gun shots were heard by those
inside Westminster, and proceedings in the
House of Commons have been suspended as
police deal with what they tentatively
described as a "terrorist incident".
The deputy speaker of the Commons, David
Lidington, announced the suspension in the
House, saying a police officer had been
stabbed and the "alleged assailant shot by
armed police".
Early reports indicate the car, which mounted
the pavement on Westminster Bridge and
mowed into around a dozen people, was the
same vehicle which then rammed into the
gates of Westminster just around the corner.
Security sources described the suspected
assailant as a middle-aged Asian man, who
is understood to have left the car before
attacking a police officer with a seven-to-
eight inch knife.
The police officer was seen wounded but
moving, after falling to the ground clutching
his arm or shoulder. At least one man was
seen running towards the exit of New Palace
Yard, underneath Big Ben.
Police were seen shouting at him,
presumably to stop. Shots were then heard.
It is unclear at this stage whether one or
more men were involved.

MP's wait until the situation is under control
in Westminster (BBC News)
Dozens of police, many armed, ran around
the gate of parliament in the moments after
the shots were fired.
Nearby the main gate, just outside the
entrance to Westminster Hall, a crowd of
police and paramedics crouched over one of
the victims and just metres away police
pointed their weapons to an individual who
was lying motionless on the floor.
Paramedics worked furiously pulling medical
supplies from their bags and dressing
wounds.
The traffic all around Parliament was stopped
and the road immediately outside the gate
was cleared. Inside Parliament, workers were
told to stay away from the windows as the
building went into lockdown.
Police carried out CPR on one of the
individuals who had been shot, in an attempt
to keep them alive.
At 2.50pm an air ambulance arrived and
landed in Parliament Square to take the
injured to hospital. Police continued to do
CPR to one of the injured.
A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said:
"We are treating this as a terrorist incident
until we know otherwise."
Earlier, the force tweeted: "We are aware of
reports of an incident at Westminster. We will
put more information out as soon as we can.
"We were called at approx 2.40pm to reports
of an incident at Westminster Bridge. Being
treated as a firearms incident - police on
scene."
Theresa May was still on the parliamentary
estate following Prime Minister's Questions
when the attacker struck.
Witnesses saw the Prime Minister being led
to her car, a silver jaguar, with the vehicle
about to leave when officers then prevented it
from driving into New Palace Yard where the
incident occurred.
A Downing Street source confirmed Ms May
was "OK".
A witness said she saw around 100 panicked
members of the public running from the
scene.
She told the Press Association: "As I was
coming through the doors at Portcullis
House, a policeman grabbed someone who
was coming in and threw him out.
"As we were coming though the glass doors I
was told by one security guard to get out
while another one told me to get in.
"As I walked in I heard a security guard get a
radio message saying 'a policeman has been
stabbed'.
"Then I walked in as police officers and
security start rushing out of the front doors
on to the street.
"When I got inside I was wondering what the
hell was going on and I saw dozens of
panicked people running down the street. The
first stream was around 30 people and the
second stream was 70 people.
"It looked like they were running for their
lives."

The Chairman of the Gambian Electoral Commission
has fled the country following threats to his life, his
nephew said on Tuesday.
Alieu Momar Njai had declared Adama Barrow the
winner of the Dec. 1 presidential election, but
President Yahya Jammeh has refused to relinquish
power, challenging the election results in court.
Modou Njai told newsmen that his uncle had left
the country because of the threats.
“He was not willing to leave but the family had to
put pressure on him.
“I understand that he is currently outside Gambia,’’
he said.
Security forces had earlier occupied the office of
the electoral commission and denied staff access
for weeks, but have since left the premises.
Barrow said on Monday that he would take power
on Jan. 19 as mandated by the constitution, in spite
of Jammeh’s court challenge.

PoliticsNigerian Army 'crushes' Boko Haram In One Of Last Strongholds: Buhari by AbiolaFawole(op): 2:27pm On Dec 24, 2016
The Nigerian army has defeated Boko Haram in the Sambisa forest, one of the jihadists' last remaining strongholds, President Muhammadu Buhari said Saturday. A campaign lasting for months in the 1,300 square-kilometre forest in northeastern Borno state led to the "final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest" on Friday, Buhari said in a statement. He congratulated his troops for "finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at 'Camp Zero', which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa Forest". The Sambisa forest, covering an area of about 1,300 square kilometres (500 square miles), was a stronghold of the Boko Haram islamists

PoliticsWhy James Ibori Will Not Return To Nigeria After Release From UK Jail by AbiolaFawole(op): 11:33pm On Dec 21, 2016
Sunny Areh, who is an ex-media aide of former Delta
Governor, James Ibori, has explained why his boss will
not return to Nigeria any time soon.
A UK Court, on Tuesday ruled that Ibori should be
released from prison, before his assets confiscation
trial commences.
Although most of his associates, who expected his
release on December 20 are expecting his return to
his Oghara home before Christmas, Areh said it would
not be possible.
“His travel documents must have expired by now. He
needs time to renew the documents and perfect his
plan to return back home. So it’s going to take
sometime before his coming to Nigeria,” Areh told The
Sun Online.
He also insisted that his boss was released
unconditionally, contrary to speculations.

BusinessNaira Crashes Further To N480 by AbiolaFawole(op): 7:59pm On Nov 29, 2016
The naira on Tuesday crashed to N480 against a U.S dollar. While it exchanged for N585 to a Pound, it traded N500 to the Euro. Experts at the black market say the local currency will go further underground. They pointed out that fall of the Naira to the foreign currencies was as a result of the recent raid of Bureau De Change operators in Lagos and Abuja by the EFCC and the DSS. The crash has equally be blamed on the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to cut the sales of dollar to BDCs by 46%.

Nairaland GeneralEFCC : Patience Jonathan Salary To Small To Buy Her Properties by AbiolaFawole(op): 11:27am On Oct 23, 2016
Mrs Patience Jonathan’s salary was too small to
buy the properties she has, says EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) says it investigations showed that the
salary of former first lady of Nigeria Patience
Jonathan was too small to get her a hotel.
The Nation reports that EFCC has retrieved monthly
records of Patience’s salary and it showed that she
earned just N700,000 as permanent secretary.
Patience will now have to explain how she acquired
nine houses, two hotels and one plaza during the
tenure of her husband, ex-president Dr Goodluck
Jonathan.
The Nation quoted EFCC sources as saying: “Our
operatives are still going ahead with the investigation
of the former First Lady.
“So far, our detectives have retrieved her pay slip
which showed that after all deductions, she was on
monthly salary of N700,000. It is left to her to justify
how the salary was able to fetch her assets.
“We demanded for her pay status in line with Section
7 of the EFCC Act. She was a former Permanent
Secretary, who earned salary at the end of the month.
She managed public trust and she has to account for
it.
“We will also look into her assets declaration forms
when she assumed office and after she left. If these
assets are pleaded, we will proceed to the next stage
of our investigation.”

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigerian

drawn to the “unscrupulous action of Governor
Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State against our members
who are bona fide citizens of the country.”
A statement by its spokesman, Baba Othman

inaugurated a vigilante group, Ekiti Grazing

members from Ekiti State”.
It said Fayose unleashed the marshals “against our
members whose herds of cattle had gone to a stream
at Agon Bridge on Federal Polytechnic road between
the time of 2:00 – 2:30 PM to quench their thirst on
Friday 21st October 2016”.
Continuing, the statement sent to DAILY POST reads:
“We have been reliably alerted an impeccable source
in Ado- Ekiti that the Anti-maul vigilante group shot
five cows and carted away with the meat but the
herdsman was able to flee with the rest of his cattle.
“We are hereby constrained to implore the federal
government through its security agencies to wade into
this unprovoked and primitive aggression against our

unquenchable inferno involving our members and Ekiti

“No Cattle strayed into anybody’s farmland around that
area in question. As such, the actions of the Anti-malu
vigilante are not ant only provoking, but capable of
creating uncontrollable scenarios whose ramification
may go well beyond Ekiti State.
