Christianity EtcNigeria's Undercover Atheists: In Their Words by AbiolaFawole(op): 7:19pm On Sep 18, 2018
Denouncing God can be a
dangerous thing in Nigeria , where religion is
the rhythm of life.
Atheism, considered blasphemy by many, is a
largely underground movement that's hard
to quantify but increasingly reported among
millennials.
Atheists come together in private on
WhatsApp groups and use pseudonyms on
social media sites to share ideas.
The Nigerian population of nearly 200 million
is split almost evenly between Muslims and
Christians with sizeable followers of
traditional spirituality.

"As a clergyman, this makes me sad that
today we have people in Nigeria going in for
atheism," Gideon Obasogie, a Roman Catholic
cleric tells A Jazeera. "The effect of this will
be terrible. For one who says there is no God,
he can do all kinds of horrible things … I feel
this will lead to anarchy and chaos. The rise
of atheism in Nigeria is not wonderful news."
In recent months, Nigerian atheists have
registered three pro-secular organisations:
Atheist Society of Nigeria, the Northern
Nigerian Humanist Association and the
Nigerian Secular Society.
"We need these organisations as a space for
people to come out," says Mubarak Bala, who
helped to register the groups.
Bala attracted media attention in 2014 after
being admitted to a psychiatric hospital in
Kano by his parents when they found out he
was atheist.
He says his father and uncles held him down
for 30 minutes and forced him to take
medications given by the psychiatrist, who
told him "everyone needs God".
"People began secretly contacting me, telling
me that they too, don't believe in Allah. Even
Christians told me they don't think Jesus is
God and they just have questions about the
whole religion thing," Bala said.
Most keep their beliefs secret.
Bala is the only atheist who allowed Al
Jazeera to use his real name.
Al Jazeera travelled to three cities - Kano,
Kaduna and Abuja - to meet some
"undercover" atheists in their twenties and
thirties.
Kenneth: 'My family told me I am
possessed'
"I grew up a rebel. I grew up a black sheep in
the family. If I go to church, I go because I
am forced to go to church.
I've never believed anything, so at a point,
the pastor of the church I was attending with
my family told me that I am possessed with
an evil spirit because I was always
questioning God and the Bible.
Kenneth said he's always been the black sheep of his
family, asking controversial questions about religion
[Chika Oduah/Al Jazeera]
As an atheist in Nigeria, you will be
ostracised.
Up to today, I have many people who keep
their distance from me simply because I ask a
lot of critical questions about religion. Many
of them don't even know I'm now an
atheist."
Jiddah: 'I realised Islam didn't have
my interest as a woman'
"I've always had questions, unanswered
questions right from childhood.
It's not like I was the ideal Muslim girl,
because I did a lot of things that Islam did
not permit me to do such as wearing men's
clothing - meaning trousers - going clubbing,
having premarital sex.
Basically, I realised Islam didn't really have
my interest as a woman. As a child at the
Islamic school, I would always ask, 'Where is
God? Why can't we see him or her?'
What I got was a beating, serious flogging
because you shouldn't ask such questions.
The breakthrough came I guess when I met
Mubarak [Bala]. I found him on Facebook
and I sent him a friend request.
(Note: Before receiving death threats, Jiddah
said she would use the site to criticise Islam
and had 8,000 followers. She has now closed
her account.)
Then, we began to talk about religion.
Mubarak would say, 'It's just like me telling
you there's a cat right here and you can't see
it. Why would you believe anything like
that?'
So gradually, I just rid myself of that belief in
God and it's been liberating.
But it's heartbreaking because you really
want to talk to your friends about these
things and explain to them because you want
them to feel what you feel. But you just
can't."
Shehu: 'A scholar can declare you an
apostate'
"In Islam, I used to see stuff that didn't
correspond with reality. I tried to study Islam
but I kept seeing more and more things that I
just couldn't believe I was reading.
I went to school in Malaysia and learned
about intellectualism and what I learned
blew my mind. I was learning about science
that broke down the myths of religion.
Things just became clear.
I came out and told my father, thinking he
would understand. It backfired.
Shehu said he was beaten in school by a teacher at the
age of 11 for challenging religious doctrines [Chika
Oduah/Al Jazeera]
We come from an Islamic royal family in
northern Nigeria.
My dad, he went to the NGO I was working
at. He was a board member and told them to
fire me. So they did.
Then he brought a woman for me to marry
so I could just conform and be normal.
My dad prevents me from telling anyone
about my beliefs. Here in Nigeria, a Mallam -
a respected Islamic scholar - can declare you
an apostate as an atheist and order you to be
killed, just like that. So I'm undercover."
Peter: 'Why is it that Christianity had
to come through conquest?'
" My mother was quite religious. Every
Sunday, we'd go to a Catholic church.
The religion, Christianity itself, came in
through several tools. Slavery, colonialism
and of course, the subtle colonialism, which
is missionary style.
So my question has always been, why is it
that something that I need had to come
through in such an inhumane way? Why is it
that it had to come through conquest?
Peter, an IT professional, was raised by a mother who is
a member of the Roman Catholic Church [Chika Oduah/
Al Jazeera]
Some people were put to the sword and they
had to take it whether they liked it or not.
For my safety … if folks find out I'm an
atheist, I could lose out on work
opportunities (Peter is an IT professional). If
people here in Nigeria find out I'm atheist, I
think that would be the death of my
reputation. Religion is a scam."
Freeman: 'The killings here over
religion do not help'
"The killings that happen so much here in
Nigeria over religion do not help.
I came back home one day from school and I
learned that a lot of houses had been brought
down by our people, Muslims, just thinking
that they did that for God.
I watched somebody being burned to death
on the road. I was coming back from school. I
actually had friends, my Muslim friends, who
went out to kill Christians and they asked me
to join them and they actually believe they
were doing it for God.
They said it's God's wish. They said that's
what God wants them to do and that it's also
what the Quran says. It really makes me
upset."
Nasir: 'My father said I should leave
or he'll kill me'
"I am against Islam entirely. Not just the way
it's practised, but against it fully.
My parents, they know I don't believe in God.
My father is an Islamic scholar and one day
he called me and my mum, and he asked if it
was true, [if] what he was hearing about me
being an atheist is true. I said yes.
So, he brought out a knife. He wanted to kill
me. I was telling him, 'Wait let me explain to
you.'
He said, 'How can you explain to me?'
Nasir's father tried to kill him when he found out he no
longer believed in God [Chika Oduah/Al Jazeera]
I was scared actually and we were struggling,
me and him. Then my mother seized the
knife. My father said I should leave the house
or he'll kill me at night. So I left the house
and started living at my workplace.
My father sent me away and then a relative
talked to him and told him I changed my
mind and told him that I'm no longer an
atheist. But my father knows that's not true.
Some of my relatives keep me away from
their children because they say I will corrupt
them."
Ayuba: 'It would break my mother's
heart if she knew'
"My mother will call me and say, 'Have you
been giving your tithes to the church?'
Like, if you don't pay, then you're stealing
from God and God will punish you for that.
So, it's like a way of indoctrinating people,
trying to put fear in people.
Ayuba said he always felt different from other people.
His mother is an avid church-goer [Chika Oduah/Al
Jazeera]
I grew up in ECWA (Evangelical Church
Winning All, formerly known as Evangelical
Church of West Africa).
The whole story of the Bible and creation, I
don't know. My mother, it would break her
heart if she knew I am atheist."
Abdul: 'My father started preaching
against me'
"I told my father that I don't believe in
prayers any more. He was grooming me to
become a mallam, an Islamic scholar, like
him.
He never encouraged me to go to Western
schools. Even when I went to university, I
just did it on my own.
He started preaching against me a few years
ago.
He's an Islamic scholar so people listen to
him. Him preaching against me, you know,
someone could take action to harm me.
Abdul says his life is at risk. His father, a Muslim
scholar in northern Nigeria, condemns him in his
sermons because he is an atheist [Chika Oduah/Al
Jazeera]
In his sermons, he would say, 'Just imagine,
my son went to Western school so now he
believes there is no creator. He thinks he is
smarter than all of us and he gets his notions
from a computer,' because he used to see me
on the computer.
I see my father and other religious people as
victims of their beliefs. I had to stop going to
my family house."

TravelRwanda To Take 10,000 Asylum Seekers From Israel (pictures) by AbiolaFawole(op): 9:08am On Nov 24, 2017
Rwandan Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said on Thursday that Rwanda is ready to accept around 10,000 asylum seekers, or "a bit more," who are currently living in Israel. "We have had discussions with Israel on receiving some of the immigrants and asylum seekers from this part of Africa who would be willing to come to Rwanda," the minister said in an interview with Rwandan English newspaper the New Times. "If they are comfortable to come here, we would be willing to accommodate them. How it’s done and their livelihoods once they are here are details that have not been concluded yet,” the minister said. The negotiations include how to secure the welfare of around 10,000 refugees, including livelihood, accommodations, and general wellbeing, she said. Though Israel said they will continue to pay $3,500 dollars and finance the flight tickets of asylum seekers who voluntarily leave the country. “I think what we are looking for is for any migrant coming to settle here to have the minimum basics to have housing, to be able to stay in the country long enough while finding a job or setting up a business. We expect everyone to have a minimum of shelter." "We do not envision people to come here and stay in camps. We envision giving them a normal life,” she said. In the same meeting, Mushikiwabo said Rwanda is considering taking in 30,000 African immigrants from Libya. “We have a very progressive and open policy when it comes to people living and settling in this country. Nobody should feel like they have no country to live in, especially those who are close to us,” she told the New Times. Israel approved a plan earlier this month to close the Holot detention center in 4 months and to send refugees either to Rwanda or Jail. In 2014, Haaretz reported that asylum seekers who agreed to a 'voluntary departure' to Rwanda arrived in the country with no status, no permits, and no path to livelihood. Some were directed from Rwanda to Uganda with no warning and no infrastructure in place. As reported by Haaretz, the Population and Immigration Authority is expected to launch an expulsion operation in the coming weeks directed at asylum seekers in Israel from Eritrea and Sudan. Many of them are expected to receive notices demanding that they leave the country or face incarceration for an unlimited amount of time. It remains undecided who will be the first recipients of the notices, but women, children and victims of human trafficking are to be excluded from the expulsion drive as will individuals who have sought asylum in Israel and have not yet received a response.

TravelRwanda Offers To Take In 30,000 West African Refugees Abused In Libya by AbiolaFawole(op): 8:48am On Nov 24, 2017
Kigali - Rwanda is willing to provide refuge to as many as 30 000
African migrants suffering abuse and slave-like conditions in Libya,
the foreign minister told AFP Wednesday.
"Rwanda is currently under discussions... to see how we can help in
welcoming migrants held captive in Libya," said Louise Mushikiwabo.
"It has just been decided so numbers and means are still under
discussion but Rwanda estimates the number to be welcomed around
30,000," she said, adding that this figure "is not confirmed yet but an
estimation".
The African Union (AU) added its voice to the outrage that greeted
footage last week of African migrants being auctioned at a "slave
market" in Libya, and on Tuesday AU Commission chairman Moussa
Faki Mahamat called on African countries to help.
"I appeal to all member states of the African Union, the African
private sector and African citizens to make financial contributions to
help alleviate the suffering of African migrants in Libya," Faki said
Tuesday. "I urge member states that have logistical means to make
them available to facilitate the evacuation of African migrants who
wish to leave Libya."
Earlier on Wednesday Mushikiwabo tweeted in response: "For
Africans being sold in Libya: Rwanda is small, but we will find some
space!"
Mushikiwabo told AFP that, "Rwanda, like the rest of the world, was
horrified by the images of the tragedy currently unfolding in Libya,
where African men, women and children who were on the road to
exile, have been held and turned into slaves".
Political philosophy
"Given Rwanda's political philosophy and our own history, we cannot
remain silent when human beings are being mistreated and auctioned
off like cattle," she said referring to the 1994 genocide in which
around 800 000 mostly Tutsi people were killed while the outside
world looked on.
Rwanda is a tiny country, roughly the size of Macedonia, with a
population of nearly 12 million and Mushikiwabo acknowledged that
her nation, "may not be able to welcome everyone, but our door is
wide open," she said.
Rwanda's offer follows the release of CNN footage of a live auction in
Libya where black youths are presented to north African buyers as
potential farmhands and sold off for as little as $400.
African migrants, mostly from the west and Horn of Africa make the
dangerous journey to Libya with hopes of making it across the
Mediterranean Sea to Europe.
Testimony collected by AFP in recent years has revealed a litany of
rights abuses at the hands of gangmasters, human traffickers and the
Libyan security forces, while many end up stuck in the unstable north
African nation for years.
More than 8 800 stranded migrants have been returned home this
year, according to the International Organisation for Migration, which
is also amassing evidence of slavery.

“If White, Western society is so oppressive, then why are you living in
the UK?”
“Why are there millions of blacks starving to death in modern day
Africa but not in the US?”
“You pride yourself on being black but yet you don’t want to live in
Africa and call yourself British. Why is that? The British colonized and
‘oppressed’ Africa, so why would you want to inherit and embrace
their culture over your own?”
“I see you have an iPhone. Who do you give credit to for producing
this product: the dim-lit factory workers, or the engineers and product
managers who designed and implemented the device?” (in order to
shut down the nigger’s myopic “but slaves built ‘society’” argument)
“Are you saying everything in America was built on tobacco and
cotton?”
“Name 5 major positive contributions that blacks have given America.
And no, peanut butter, rap music and AIDS don’t count.”
“Your ancestors spent tens of thousands of years in Africa, but
because your parents decided to immigrate to Britain 30 years ago or
so suddenly all that goes out the window and you’re exactly the same
as a Caucasian British person. A person who’s ancestors spent
centuries developing their own distinct culture, heritage, history, gene
pool, etc. Can you explain how this makes any sense?”
“Do I suddenly become black if I move to Lagos, Nigeria?”
“How do you think your ancestors would feel knowing that you’ve
completely abandoned your African heritage in order to favor that of
the White ‘oppressor’, who ‘enslaved’ millions of you own ‘people’?”

BusinessNigeria's E-commerce Market Value To Hit N15.45 Trillion In 10 Years by AbiolaFawole(op): 8:17am On Aug 28, 2017
Currently worth around $13billion (about N4.01trillion), experts in the
Nigerian financial service sector have estimated that Nigeria's e-
commerce market value could rise to $50billion (N15.45trillion) over
the next decade.
A recent report by London based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU),
identified industry giants, such as Jumia, Konga and Jiji, as leading
the African charge to boost the continent's growth of online,
technology based retail business.
The report, which highlighted countries and metro regions in Africa
with the biggest potential for e-commerce growth, as well as the
trends and developments in the market, also noted that Nigeria's three
main online retailers; Jumia, Jiji and Konga, serve a mass-market
clientele.
The EIU report valued Jumia (a leading online retail platform) at
$1billion; the company operates in 10 other African countries.
Analysts at FBN quest believe the growing appetite for mobile data
usage as well as increased network coverage has increased the
potential of Nigeria's e-commerce market.
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
"Based on data from the Nigerian Communications Commission
(NCC), mobile network coverage is currently estimated at 77per cent
on the basis of 185million as the country's population. However,
internet data penetration via GSM is lower, at 50per cent. The
potential impact of a thriving e-commerce market is improved trade
activity as it provides a cost-effective method of connecting producers
and merchants directly to customers, "the analysts stated.
However, the analysts pointed out that the e-commerce industry has
also witnessed reduced patronage due to increased pressure on
household pockets in the current downturn.
They added: "We expect a token return to positive territory for GDP as
a whole this year. Our GDP growth projection for 2017 is 1.6 per cent
year-on-year (y/y). Nevertheless, for e-commerce to attain its full
potential, infrastructural issues as well as e-fraud challenges need to
be tackled."
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
The analysts also revealed that Konga now leads the industry
following its expanded operations by launching a groceries segment.
"Konga, its major competitor, has expanded operations by launching a
groceries segment. This is similar to models established in the UK
such as Sainsbury's and Tesco. However, logistics challenges across
the country could threaten the shopping experience as delivery of
products may be delayed."
According to Konga, the e-company has a customer pool of 750,000.
However, there are only 200,000 active customers. The number of
active customers fluctuates with seasonalities. We note that the rural
population accounts for only 10% of its total active customers. This
could be directly correlated to low internet penetration in rural areas as
well as modest income levels, "they added.
The EIU had in its report pointed out that Nigeria's e-commerce giants
have penetrated Nigeria's inner cities and rural areas, serving people
effectively.
For instance, it noted that Jumia is able to deliver to less accessible
places, where sourcing goods from shops or stalls is not as
straightforward.

PoliticsGambia To Consider Ecowas’s Three-child Policy by AbiolaFawole(op): 8:54am On Aug 27, 2017
(JollofNews) – Gambia’s Information Minister
Demba Ali Jawo has said the government will
consider the three-child policy proposal that
parliamentarians from Ecowas, Mauritania
and Chad have agreed to help pioneer in the
coming years.
“Ecowas has made a suggestion for such a
policy. I can assure you that the government is
going to consider it,” he told journalists during
a presser held on Thursday at GRTS building
on MDI Road.
Over the past decades, West Africa has
witnessed an exponential population growth
that experts fear could hamper efforts to bring
prosperity within the subregion.
Burkina Faso’s National Assembly speaker
Salifou Diallo is playing a lead role in the
campaign. The move is expected to restrict by
2030 every woman to have only three childs.
Minister Jawo said as a member state of
Ecowas, it is very likely that the Gambia will
adopt any policy that Ecowas will try to
implement.
“The government has to take a decision which
it has not done yet,” Jawo added.
However, there are fears that the regional
bloc’s three-child policy will spark concerns
among Muslim and Christian communities.
The Serrekunda West National Assembly
Member Halifa Sallah, who spoke on Thursday
to a group of reporters, said Ecowas
parliamentarians have the right to initiate any
policy they feel necessary. But he was quick to
warn against turning social legislation into
crimiinal legislation.
“Whatever you cannot transform into criminal
legislation, that is really a very bad law,” he
stated.
Sallah, who also double as special adviser to
President Barrow, suggested that the right
approach is to conduct a sensitisation
campaign in order to make sure the
populations adhere to the project.
“Campaigning to solve populations problems is
much better that social legislation.,” said
Halifa Sallah.
