A member of the House of Representatives from Adamawa State, Adamu Kamale, who represents Madagali/Michika federal constituency, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress. His defection was announced in a letter read by the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, on the floor of the house on Tuesday. Mr. Kamale cited divisions in the Peoples Democratic Party as his reason for defecting. His defection is coming barely two weeks after his counterpart from Plateau, Edward Pwajok, declared for the APC. The minority whip, Yakubu Barde, however said there was no division in the PDP and said his party would challenge Mr. Kamale’s defection in court. http://fawoleblog..is/2017/05/breaking-pdp-loses-another-rep-to-apc.html?m=1 |

A Chatham House report launched yesterday in
Abuja has estimated that at least $480 billion
was stolen by corrupt officials between 1960 and
2004.Chatham House, the Royal Institute of
International Affairs, is an independent policy
institute based in London.
The report, titled "Collective Action on Corruption
in Nigeria, a Social Norms Approach to
Connecting Societies and Institutions," said that
close to $400 billion was stolen from Nigeria's
public accounts from 1960 to 1999. It added
that between 2005 and 2014, $182 billion was
lost through illicit financial flows from the
country.
This stolen commonwealth, the report observed,
represents the investment gaps in building and
equipping modern hospitals to reduce Nigeria's
exceptionally high maternal mortality rates
estimated at two out of every 10 global maternal
deaths.

British Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Paul
Awkright, noted that corruption is bad for people
and business. "Corruption fuels inequality, holds
back development and it is a threat to national
development of countries," he said.
Awkright, who disclosed that Nigeria and Britain
are making progress in tackling corruption,
expressed delight that the current administration
of President Muhammadu Buhari has made fight
against corruption a key action of the
government.
He noted that the study provides insight into
why people engage in or refrain from corruption
and cautioned that tough talk and fear-based
messaging alone cannot address corruption.
The study, coauthored by Dr. Leena Koni
Hoffman, an associate fellow of the Africa
programme at Chatham House and Raj Navanit
Patel, a consultant at the University of
Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. candidate in the
department of Philosophy, suggested policy
approaches to dealing with corruption and
offered methods of integrating behavioural
insights into anti-corruption strategies.

N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Boko Haram militants killed nine Chadian soldiers in an attack on a military camp on Friday in the north of the Central African country close to the Nigerian border, an army spokesman said on Saturday. "On our side, there are nine dead and 28 wounded," Colonel Azem Bermandoua told Reuters, adding that 28 militants were killed. The army said that Boko Haram carried out the attack. Over the last seven years, Boko Haram has killed 15,000 people and displaced more than two million in its bid to create an Islamic state in Nigeria. A regional force that includes troops from Chad has retaken much of its territory in the last two years. The group has largely focused its attacks on northeast Nigeria, neighbouring Cameroon and Niger, with attacks in Chad less frequent. London – Campaigning in Britain’s general election officially began on Wednesday after the dissolution of parliament, with the ruling Conservatives urging voters to back Prime Minister Theresa May’s “strong and stable leadership” through Brexit. Theresa May Opinion polls put the Conservatives about 16 percentage points ahead of the largest opposition party, Labour, before what many analysts see as an unnecessary election that May wants to use to increase her power through a larger parliamentary majority. May has asked voters to back her leadership of the country and her plans for Brexit negotiations with EU leaders in the election on June 8. Speaking during campaigning on Wednesday in Oxfordshire, west of London, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron accused May of seeking a “coronation” via the election. “Families are already, as we’re seeing today, 500 pounds a year worse off as a consequence of the hard Brexit that this Conservative government has chosen,” Farron said. “And that’s before we have even left [the EU].” Labour focussed its campaign on cuts to Britain’s ailing National Health Service on Wednesday, as shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth promised to halt planned closures of hospitals and other health services if it wins the election. Ashworth said threats of closures had “caused widespread concern and confusion,” adding that decisions were taken “behind closed doors, with no genuine involvement of local people.” May was scheduled to visit Buckingham Palace later Wednesday for Queen Elizabeth II’s formal approval of the dissolution of parliament. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/05/official-election-campaigns-begin-britain-dissolves-parliament/ |

Britain has predicted that Nigeria may turn out to be one of the three biggest economies of the world by 2050. The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright, made this disclosure on Monday in Lagos as part of activities to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce, NBCC. Speaking on the topic, “Nigeria-British Relations: The Next 100 Years”, Arkwright said the UK government was happy with the economic outlook of Nigeria. He added that by virtue of the policies and investment habits of the current government of Nigeria, it was glaring that the country would no longer be dependent on aid to develop. Arkwright said, “By 2050, Nigeria will be the third biggest country in the world as it will overtake the USA to join China and India as the three biggest countries. http://dailypost.ng/2017/04/25/nigeria-will-third-biggest-country-world-2050-britain/ |
