PoliticsGov Lamido Urges Electorate To Vote Out Defectors Of PDP In February Polls by aboy247(op): 1:27pm On Jan 12, 2015
Gov. Sule Lamido of Jigawa on Sunday urged electorate in the state to vote out defectors of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) in February elections.

Lamido gave the advice in Buji, Buji Local Government Area of the state, at the commencement of local government PDP campaign rally for governorship and other candidates seeking elective positions.

He said that all defectors seeking for re-election or higher positions with the mandates of PDP were not deserved to be voted for in the upcoming general polls.

According to him, all those that left their party for other political parties are nothing but betrayers and traitors.

“I am urging you, the voters, to wait for them and teach them a lesson during election, tell those who are not here that I gave such directive,” he said.

The governor presented all the candidates seeking for election on the platform of PDP in the area and those of governorship and deputy governorship candidates to the people.

In his remarks, the governorship candidate, Malam Aminu Ibrahim, pledged to consolidate on the achievements of Lamido, if elected.

Ibrahim, however, appealed to the electorate to come out enmasse and vote for him and other PDP flag bearers.

PoliticsFather Mbaka Saga: I’ll Close Adoration Ground If…. —cardinal Olubunmi Okogie by aboy247(op): 12:06pm On Jan 11, 2015
Retired Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, explains why the clergy should not mix religion with politics. He speaks against the backdrop of the statement by the Enugu-based Catholic priest and founder of Adoration Ground, Father Ejike Mbaka, that members of his congregation should reject President Goodluck Jonathan in the general elections.

How do you see the statement credited to Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka?

Any serious priest will not speak the way he spoke. I am not saying that he is not serious. I will not agree with the things he said. According to what I read in the newspapers, a few weeks earlier, the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, visited his Adoration Ground in Enugu and he prayed for her. At that occasion, he was said to have lambasted the opposition party, APC, and now to turn around overnight and start lambasting President Goodluck Jonathan shows that there is something wrong somewhere.
Personally, I felt bad because it is not the place of a priest to go to that extent. He can have his personal opinion, but to go to the extent that he went is abnormal. I want you to know that he wasn’t speaking for the church. He said he was moved by the spirit, and I wonder what kind of spirit was that.
He said he was under the inspiration of the spirit. If he was under the inspiration of the spirit, I wonder if the spirit is that of God. I don’t think the spirit he’s referring to is the spirit of God. He must have been under the influence of another spirit. He must have been listening to a wrong spirit.

Is the statement not embarrassing to the Catholic Church as a whole?

Indeed, it is. But I must say to you that he was not speaking on behalf of the church. No! No!! No!!! Anybody with such opinion is in error. The man cannot hold brief for the church. Pardon me, but how can I say you are bloody fool and anybody takes that to mean that all journalists are bloody fools. It’s very funny.

In a situation such as this, what does the Catholic Church do?

Well, the Catholic Church is structured in such a way that there are dioceses where each priest belongs. This particular priest happens to come from Enugu Diocese, so it is left for the bishop in charge of that diocese to discipline him. If the priest fails to obey the discipline, then the bishop is obligated to report the mother to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN.
You may have heard the Bishop of Abuja Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who said that if the priest were to be in his diocese, he would discipline him straight. But he is not in his diocese. The best anyone of us can do is just to advise him that he had gone too far and he is free to take our advice and he may not. God gave every one of us a free will and we are at liberty to use the freewill as we choose.

What kind of sanction can be given to such a priest?

It depends on his bishop. You cannot dictate for his bishop. Don’t forget that this same man was at loggerheads with a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamanni, and it was the same Adoration Ground in Enugu. If I have my way, we should close that place because a lot of things have been happening there that are out of tune. I think Gov. Peter Obi also went there for prayers at one point. If I have my way, I won’t go there for anything….

Your advice for politicians who are currently jostling for votes….

One of them came out publicly recently to say that if you are a politician and you cannot tell a lie…how then that anyone wants to go into politics? If they can openly say such a thing, it means they have been deceiving the people all this while. So, I don’t really know. Any good politician must, first and foremost, must have the fear of God in him. A responsible politician, irrespective of the office you are vying for—because they say whatever has a beginning must have an end—must begin by developing the fear of God in him because by and by your tenure will eventually come to an end.
It’s because of greed that most of them are clamouring for second or more terms. Any politician that has finished his first term and is asking for a second term, there is something wrong with him. If we look at it critically, after four years what is he clamouring for a second term for? I cannot understand Nigerians. Some of us are damn greedy. They don’t have the fear and respect for the down trodden.
Now they are up and about the whole place…they can even lick your boot now because they are canvassing for votes, but as soon as they get the votes they begin to show you pepper. They don’t regard the poor citizens that are out there; forgetting that someday and one day they may return to the status quo.
Whatever has a beginning must have an end. This is the time you get them talking but they won’t look at their manifestoes, but because they want to get to power they are going to everybody. Some of them have come to me here and I told them off: one of the first thing you’ve got to do is get religion off your mind because it is like putting petrol in a fire. You don’t mix politics with religion and some people came to me, saying, ‘Look at the situation in Lagos, what are we going to do?’ What are you going to do? Are they your God? Do they own the nation? The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Any clergyman that mixes religion with politics is finished including their church because they will not be spared.

Politicians are taking their campaigns to churches. Is it a healthy development?

It is not! They should keep religion out of politics. Don’t forget each person has his or her own mind. During harvest, you have the priest and the assistant priest and you go out to invite another priest to preach, that will affect what I am going give, because I have already made up my mind on what I am going to give. They come to church to canvas for votes.
It should not be allowed by anybody. I don’t really know what to do because this election, hmm hmm hmm, I am afraid. Imagine their utterances! Look at what Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) said about Shariah in 2011, that is what they are harping on now in 2015. Why? When did you hear about Shariah last? This kind of thing is annoying. Look at the recent campaign launch that produced over N21 billion. Where did they get the money from when people are hungry? No water. No electricity. No roads. I just wonder what kind of government we have in this country. These are all corrupt persons and they will want me to cast their vote for them.

PoliticsSirisena Sworn In As Sri Lanka President by aboy247(op): 1:17am On Jan 11, 2015
Following a keenly contested presidential election, Maithripala Sirisena has been sworn in as Sri Lanka’s new president ousting the country's once powerful leader Mahinda Rajapakse after a decade in power.

Sirisena and his new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe both took the oath of office in Colombo’s Independence Square on Friday hours after Rajapakse conceded defeat, in what is being touted as one of the most peaceful in the island’s history.

The election was dominated by charges of corruption and growing authoritarianism against Rajapakse, who rewrote the constitution after his re-election in 2010 to remove the two-term limit on the presidency and give himself more powers over public servants and judges.

Sirisena said on Friday after taking the oath of office that Sri Lanka, which fell out with the West over allegations of wartime rights abuses, will mend its ties with the international community.

“We will have a foreign policy that will mend our ties with the international community and all international organisations in order that we derive maximum benefit for our people,” he said.

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Rajapakse conceded defeat in an election he had been widely predicted to win before Sirisena, a member of his own party, defected to run against him.

“The president met with former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe this morning,” Rajapaksa’s press secretary, Vijayananda Herath, told AFP hnews agency.

The president concedes defeat and will ensure a smooth transition of power bowing to the wishes of the people.”

The insurgents, it was gathered, were trying to penetrate Damaturu, Adamawa State, through the town but were mowed down by the troops who were stationed in the area during a gun battle.

The terrorists had earlier attempted to storm Damaturu on Friday, but were repelled by the military, during an operation that lasted for several hours.

PoliticsCoroner Dismisses TB Joshua's Application To Halt Building Collapse Inquest by aboy247(op): 10:45pm On Dec 10, 2014
A LAGOS State Coroner's Court on Wednesday dismissed an application filed by the registered trustees of the Synagogue Church of All Nations and its founder, Prophet Temitope Joshua.

The applicants had asked the court to stay proceedings on its ongoing inquest into the Sept. 12 building collapse of a guest house within the church premises.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 116 persons were killed after the six-storey building collapsed.

The applicants had asked the court to stay proceedings on issues relating to calling of witnesses in respect of the building approval or material tests of the collapsed building.

They had also asked the coroner to suspend further action on the invitation issued to Joshua to appear before the inquest to give evidence.

According to them, the stay of proceedings is pending the determination of another suit filed by Joshua against the coroner before Justice Lateefat Okunnu of an Ikeja High Court.

However, in his ruling, the coroner, Mr Oyetade Komolafe, dismissed the application for lacking merit and for being an abuse of court processes.

Komolafe said the court had no power to entertain the application because it was not an adversarial court which had plaintiffs and respondents.

He said: "The proceedings before the court is a judicial inquiry to ascertain certain facts".

"There are no parties in a coroner's inquest or proceedings. The proceedings are inquisitorial and the court cannot determine or pronounce criminal liabilities on witnesses."

According to him, the Coroner's Systems Law prohibits the court from entertaining applications outside its own jurisdiction.

"Therefore, this court cannot adjudicate on this motion on notice as in doing so, the court will be acting outside its own jurisdiction," he said.

Komolafe noted that the suit filed before the high court did not translate to an automatic stay of proceedings because the judge did not grant any order to that effect.

"From the order made by the high court, there is nowhere it was stated that the proceedings of this inquest should be stayed as provided by Section 40(6) of the High Court Civil Procedure Rules.

"This court cannot adjudicate on this motion on notice as doing so would amount to operate outside the scope of a Coroners Court.

"In the circumstances therefore, this application is hereby dismissed," he added.

NAN reports that the matter was adjourned until Dec. 12 for further hearing.

PoliticsFire Guts Immigration Hqrts – Fire Service by aboy247(op): 8:12am On Dec 10, 2014
A section of the national headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), located in Sauka, along Airport Road, Abuja was yesterday afternoon destroyed by fire.

The public relations officer of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Mr. Biodun Obisesan, said the fire outbreak started at some minutes after 12 pm.
He said it took the efforts of the men and officers of the federal fire service and a section of the Federal Capital Territory’s Fire Service as well as the Air Force to put off the fire to avert major disaster.

Although Obisesan could not ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak as at the time of filing this report, he however revealed that no life was lost to the incident.

His words, “the fire outbreak affected the store area where their [NIS] fabrics are kept.”

When contacted, the public relations officer of the Immigration Service, Mr Chukwuemeka Obua, dismissed the report.

He said, “Although I was out on official assignment, I just came back now to confirm that all our buildings are intact. You can send some secret investigators to come and see things for themselves.’

“No part of our offices was gutted by fire. It’s mere rumour. It’s like the fire they are talking about is the one that gutted the refuse dump close to the service popular mammy market while the cleaners were trying to tidy the environment which is very far from our offices,” Obua further pointed out, I want to assume that maybe, the fire went out of control.”

PoliticsDamaturu, Maiduguri Attacks - 38 Policemen, Six Soldiers, 106 Others Dead by aboy247(op): 6:28pm On Dec 05, 2014
The Police High Command in Abuja, yesterday, confirmed that 38 Police officers were killed during Monday and Tuesday's attacks on Damaturu and Maiduguri by Boko Haram terrorists, who targeted police stations and other security agencies. More than 150 persons, including two medical doctors, a staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu and his two children were also killed during the attacks, a rescue official and a health worker told AFP.

The Police confirmation came just as a top security personnel confided in Vanguard that about 60 terrorists were killed by troops of the Nigerian Army backed by Air Force helicopters, thereby successfully repelling the terrorists from both towns.
Relatives sit around one of the victims of twin suicide blasts at Kano central mosque in the accident and emergency ward of the Nassarawa Specilist Hospital in northern Nigeria's largest city of Kano on November 28, 2014. At least 120 people were killed and 270 others wounded when two suicide bombers blew themselves up and gunmen opened fire during weekly prayers at the mosque, a week after the emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, of one of Nigeria's top Islamic leaders called on northerners to defend themselves against Boko Haram Islamists tha have been carrying deadly attacks and seizure of territory in the northeast. The military has also raised the alarm that the Boko Haram terrorist group was getting both human and equipment reinforcements from Chad as many of their members either captured or killed in battle turned out to be Chadian citizens or mercenaries.

PoliticsMagnitude Of Damaturu Bomb Blasts Frightens Me – Mark by aboy247(op): 8:50am On Dec 03, 2014
Source: .com.ng

Senate President, David Mark, on Tuesday said he was frightened by the magnitude of bomb blasts carried out by the dreaded Boko Haram sect on Monday and the bravery displayed by them in their desperate bid to capture Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

Mark stated this while commenting on the motion brought by Senator Ahmed Lawan representing Yobe North in the red chamber on the unfortunate development.
He said that the dimension which the insurgency had taken was frightening even as he commended the military for successfully repelling the insurgents from taking over the Government House.

He said, “The insurgent are attacking us left, right, front and back in North East. But that of Monday was because they were able to get to the government house which gave it a new dimension.

“It has nothing to do with the state of emergency. The dimension that it took yesterday was really frightening. I was in touch with the governor for most of the time and we were all very worried. and because of the magnitude of what had happened in the last few days.

“We have bomb blasts in Kano, the attack in Borno, the bomb blast in Borno and the incidence that took place in Damaturu.”

Lawan had while relying on Order 43 of the Senate Standing Order said that the military took up the insurgents that attempted to capture Damaturu, the Yobe State capital even without the emergency rule in place.

He added that what mattered most was the determination of the military and not the name given before operations.

He said, “I spoke with you (Senate President) this morning (Monday) on the need for me on behalf of my colleagues from Yobe State to make a personal explanation on what happened in Damaturu, Yobe State capital.

“Mr. President, I will like to formally inform this senate that Damaturu was attacked by the insurgents from about 5:00 am on Monday and the military or the armed forces, battled the insurgents and controlled the situation.

“So many lives were lost but of this moment, we cannot determine the exact number for the dead and so many were also wounded and of course, psychologically, hundreds of thousands of Yobeians and even Nigerians are traumatized for that incident.

“I want to say this that a war is not won by the name of the operation; a war is won by the operators of the operation that operate in the theatre of war. Our Soldiers were determined to fight the insurgents, they fought very gallantly and exhibited valour and they did that because they have motivation not because there was any state of emergency existing.

”The significance of what happened in Damaturu should not be lost on us, I believe that we can win this war if we all come together, get the proper leadership, support the leadership across all the three tiers of government and across all the political parties.

“I believe that this war is winnable and I believe that if we do the right thing, we see the right result that we saw yesterday.”

Also commenting on the efforts of the military to tame the Boko Haram insurgents in the Damaturu attack, Senator Alkali Jajere representing Yobe South said Nigerian military tackle the insurgents with necessary supports.

He said, “There was an attempted attack on the government house, you know that the government house is situated at the center of the town and the trunk ‘A’ road, they attacked the gate and the soldiers at the gate have to engage them and repelled them.

“They tried to overrun the government house, but they didn’t succeed. Thank God, the governor was in Abuja, he came for his screening which he did yesterday.”

Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned plenary till December 16, to enable members to attend their various parties’ primaries.
PoliticsNigeria Moves To Help Wipe Out Ebola From Endemic Counties by aboy247(op): 8:16am On Dec 03, 2014
Source: .com.ng

Having conquered the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria, about 250 Nigerian volunteers are set to leave tomorrow for some West African countries that have been worst hit by the virus.

The volunteers, who commenced the initial trainings required for the assignment in Lagos yesterday, are part of a team of about 1000 strong health personnel force being deployed under the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA). The 250 Nigerian volunteers consist of doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists and care givers, among others.

The Director of Social Affairs at the African Union Commission, Ambassador Olawale Maiyegun, said at the training of the 250 volunteers from Nigeria in Lagos, that the Union was optimistic of wiping out the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) from Africa in six months, noting that the ‘massive’ deployment of personnel, equipment and supply was one sure way of tackling the ailment head on.

Olawale, who is the head of the AU Ebola Mission, noted: “We all know that Ebola has been ravaging West Africa, killing in Sierra Leone and Liberia. But, it was not until August 8 that the WHO declared it as international concern, more or less a humanitarian problem in the entire world.

“Precisely, August 19, the African Union Peace and Security Council declared Ebola as a threat to security on the continent. By the time the UN Security Council declared Ebola as an international concern to security and the UN General Assembly rated UN Mission to Ebola, we had already deployed the first set of volunteers. We had recruited already men and young women of this continent, whom I am very proud of.

“Africa Union has deployed volunteers to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. We examine the problem. We are very grateful to the various efforts of the international community, particularly, in providing infrastructure, logistics. What was missing in most of the international efforts is the human resources for health, which was left largely to non-governmental organizations like medicine and frontiers, Red Cross and Samaritan Cross. “

Project Director of the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Dr. Abdulsalam Nasidi, said the team is the first batch of 504 volunteers expected to be deployed out eventually.

The majority of the volunteers, he said, were those who managed the outbreak in Lagos and Rivers states.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, stressed the need to protect other countries by jointly fighting the scourge in countries where it is still endemic.

“If we fold our arms here saying that the Ebola virus disease has been contained in Nigeria, we are not being serious. We stand the risk of another case being introduced into Nigeria. We do not pray for it. We must be up and doing from preventing that from happening. And, one of the easiest ways is to send people who are knowledgeable, who have been trained, to go down there and assist and help them.

“What we are doing today is a very important aspect of our fight against the Ebola virus disease. You all recall that Nigeria was certified Ebola free in October 20th of this year. A lot of people have wondered how we did it in Lagos, and indeed in Nigeria because that first man came to Nigeria and a lot of activities have happened in respect of the containment in Lagos.

And, the virus spilled over to Port Harcourt. But let me say that the major thing is that of leadership, the issue of vision; everybody working as a team. We did not leave anything to chance. That was why we succeeded in containing it. We are all glad we contained the disease.”
