PoliticsPlease Come Back Jonathan! Sokoto Residents Stage Pro-gej Protest (photos) by aboy247(op): 11:10am On Nov 18, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Jonathan-In-Sokoto-663x437.jpg

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan received a hero’s welcome when he visited Sokoto state to pay a condolence visit to the family of Ibrahim Dasuki.

The former president visited the family of the late Sultan on Thursday, November 17.

The former Sultan who is also the father to former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, died on Monday, November 14, evening at the National Hospital in Abuja.

Jonathan had earlier sent a condolence message and followed it up with a visit.

In what might be considered an unexpected reception, Sokoto youths carried placards hailing Jonathan and asking him to come back as president.

Although they were kept at bay by security details, the youths kept on chanting songs in honour of the former president.

See photos of the former president and how he was received by Sokoto youths below:

PoliticsThought We’ve Defeated Boko Haram, Nigerians React To Purchase Of 12 Warplanes by aboy247(op): 2:26pm On Nov 12, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/boko-haram-attacks-11.jpg

A former State Department top expert on Nigeria’s security Matthew Page had in a piece asked the government of the United States of America to reconsider its plan to sell 12 warplanes to Nigeria.

A proposal for the sale of the warplanes – A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft – is expected to be tabled before the US congress.
Page’s article on War on the rocks said both countries expect the planes to strengthen Nigeria’s effort in her fight against insurgency raving the country since 2009.

However, page added that US policy makers want the sale to represent their collaboration in assisting Nigerian in its counter-terrorism fight.

But Page, believes the act will only undermine US corruption policy, overlooks recent human rights abuses perpetrated in Nigeria, it would not help in the fight against the dreaded terrorist sect – Boko Haram, It would not foster a closer defence relationship and above all, it is way too expensive for Nigeria to afford it.

As a buffer to the points raise, Page, also gave reasons why he thinks the idea should not be pushed further by the US government and its policy makers.

However, some Nigerians who reacted to Page’s reasoning said its still unbelievable that Nigeria cannot produce equipment it needs for its operations.

Others said such expenditure is uncalled for since many Nigerians are dying of hunger and children of malnutrition.

Foreign AffairsAmericans Are In Trouble As Donald Trump Asks His Children To Select Cabinet Mem by aboy247(op): 2:16pm On Nov 12, 2016

America’s president-elect, Donald Trump, has committed the selection of his future cabinet into the hands of his running mate, Mike Pence as well as three of his children.

Reports from the United States where anti-Trump protesters stormed the streets of Washington DC to protest his win at the polls which Hillary Clinton was clearly a favourite to win, showed that Americans are already showing signs of fear over a possible xenophobic attack under his authority.Donald Trump has reportedly added three of his children as part of those to select his cabinet. On Friday, the businessman announced that his vice president-elect would be in charge of steering the transition of power, saying: “Mike will have a big role. He’s very capable.”

In his first interview with The Wall Street Journal after his triumph at the polls, Trump informed that his vice would serve as the link between him and the congress.

It was also gathered that his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was included on the transition team and this is likely to make the citizens raise their eyebrows.

On Tuesday, November 8, Trump defeated Clinton in the election which was keenly contested between the pair and one which many bookmakers were proven wrong.

His emergence as the 45th president of the United States is seen in different lights by leaders from all over the world, especially with the uncouth statements he made prior to the election.

PoliticsLagosians Consume N3bn Food Daily – Ambode by aboy247(op): 5:34pm On Nov 10, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Ambode-food-security.jpg

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said that investors willing to do business in the agric sector in the State can be rest assured of a ready market and returns on investment as the daily consumption of food items in the State is worth over N3billion daily.

The Governor, who spoke at the maiden edition of the Lagos Food Security and Exhibition Summit with the theme “Actualizing Sustainable Food Security in Lagos State: A New, Comprehensive Agenda’, said his administration remains committed in its efforts towards maximising its comparative advantage in the sector to achieve food security. He said Nigeria had no business resorting to importation to feed its citizens, adding that there was no alternative to achieving food security other than tilling the land and embrace best practices that will improve efficiency in the agricultural value chain.

The Governor said, “Our core policy thrust towards achieving food security is to maximize the comparative advantage of the State in agriculture and establish partnerships with other States of the Federation with comparative advantage in specific areas.”

Listing some areas of collaboration already activated, Governor Ambode said his administration has sealed a landmark partnership with Kebbi State Government for the development of agricultural commodities such as rice, wheat, groundnut, onion, maize and beef value chain, expressing optimism that the partnership can result in the supply of 70 per cent of the total national rice consumption.

“We have also acquired agricultural land in other neighbouring States of Ogun and Oyo as well as Abuja. Specifically, 500 hectares of farm land has been acquired for rice cultivation in Eggua, Ogun State, 84.7 hectares at Okinni in Oshogbo for oil palm processing, among others,” the Governor said.

He said the Lagos Food Security Summit and Exhibition was organized to bring together stakeholders in the Agricultural sector to proffer solutions to the challenges militating against the achievement of food security, noting that the success recorded in the last “Traffic Summit’ that has eased the traffic situation in the metropolis can be replicated in the area of food security in the state.

He therefore said that in the wake of the economic challenges facing the country there was no better time for the nation to review its approach and the redirection of its energies to food production.

“Behind every dark cloud, they say, is a silver lining. One of the challenges the current economic recession has brought to the fore is the urgent need to develop a sustainable programme that will guarantee food security for our people. As a nation, in the past, we spent billions of Foreign Exchange on importation of food and food items many of which can be cultivated in our country.

“Our country is blessed with very good arable land and a climate that supports food production. We can achieve food security and create employment opportunities for our teeming youth if we put in place the right policies and incentives that will attract significant investment into the Agricultural sector,” he said.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Food Security, Mr. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, noted that that the summit was being organized to institutionalize a food security framework that would guarantee sustainable food security for its growing population.

He said the summit was designed to realign emerging realities with new global trends on food safety, food processing, food storage, food handling, funding of agribusiness and agric insurance”, adding that it will attract major stakeholders from the Agricultural sector and academia, foreign and local investors, media, civil society and policymakers in government.

Earlier, Chairman of the Summit, Alhaji Sani Dangote, commended the Governor Ambode-led administration for leading being in the forefront in addressing the challenge of food security, saying that the State boasts of a large population with an economy ranked as the fifth largest in Sub-Saharan Africa, a bulging youth population and capital of the nation’s industrial base.

He said despite the shortage of arable land in the State, the State Government can leverage on its comparative advantages to not only guarantee food security in the State, but also feed the neighbouring South West States.

He said the State has the capacity to make agriculture a profitable business, which according to him, would encourage youths to take up agriculture as a profession and contribute their quota towards achieving food security.

The Senate on Tuesday began a probe into the concession of the Easter and Western Rail Lines to General Electric, a United States company, without following due process.

The lawmakers made the move following a motion moved by Senator Bassey
Albert (Akwa-Ibom North-East), titled, ‘Urgent Need to Investigate the Granting of Concession of the Western (Lagos-Kano) and Eastern (Port Harcourt-Maiduguri) Rail Lines to General Electric, a US Company.’“The Senate is convinced that the Ministry of Transport has violated
the provisions of the Public Enterprises (Privatisation and Commercialisation) Act 1999 by unilaterally engaging the General Electric for the concession of the Western (Lagos-Kano) and Eastern (Port Harcourt-Maiduguri) rail lines as evident from the above facts,”
he stated while moving the motion.

Albert recalled the Senate noted that the Public Enterprises
(Privatisation and Commercialisation) Act 1999 established the
National Council on Privatisation and the Bureau of Public Enterprise
for the purpose of privatisation of public enterprises.

He noted that the BPE and the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory
Facility, upon the approval of the NCP in April 2015, developed a road
map for the concessio of the Western (Lagos-Kano) and Eastern (Port
Harcourt-Maiduguri) rail lines, “despite the fact that the Nigerian
Railway Corporation Act did not envisage a concession of the
corporation until recently amended.”

CrimeOctogenarian To Hang For Murder In Osun by aboy247(op): 7:47pm On Nov 08, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/court-hammer_thumb-1024x703-777x437.jpg

Justice Kudrat Akano of Osun High Court on Tuesday in Osogbo sentenced an octogenarian, Oluwafemi Fagbemi, and three others to death by hanging for murder.

The other convicts sentenced were Tobi Ojo, Famutuwa Femi and Tope Olatunji. The prosecutor and state counsel in the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Abiodun Badiora, had told the court that the convicts on April 13, 2012, killed one Jacob Ajayi for money ritual in Ilesa town.

Badiora said the headless body of the victim was later recovered from a septic tank with his genitals and other parts of his body missing.

The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to sections 324 and 319 of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol.II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

The convicts were arraigned on a two-count of conspiracy and murder.

The counsel to the convicts, A.O Oluwole, however, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy in her judgement.

Delivering judgement, Akano said the prosecutor had proved his case beyond any reasonable doubt.

Akano said the convicts were guilty of the two-count of conspiracy and murder preferred against them.

The judge consequently sentenced the convicts to 14 years imprisonment for conspiracy and death by hanging for murder.

PoliticsIs It Right Or Wrong For Oba Of Benin Not To Go To The Airport To Welcome Buhari by aboy247(op): 5:00pm On Nov 07, 2016
The Oba Of Benin was conspicuously absent among the high powered delegation that came to the airport to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari when he arrived Edo state today. The President had to go to his palace in benin to meet him.

We at THE SUMMARY want to now inquire from our readers if the Oba did the right thing by not being part of the delegation unlike in the case of Emir of Katsina and other eminent traditional rulers in Nigeria who always go to the airport to welcome the president.

PoliticsBuhari Favors Other Region More Than The North - Prof. Abdullahi, Presents Proof by aboy247(op): 1:13am On Nov 07, 2016
The spokesman of Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi has said that the north has so far been short-changed by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Professor Abdullahi who was guest of Kaduna-based Liberty Radio Hausa programme, "Bakon mu na mako’’ on Sunday noted that the north is not properly represented in the appointment of Ministers and in the distribution of capital projects in the 2016 budget. According to him, the north voted for Buhari irrespective of party affiliations and not necessarily for the All Progressives Congress (APC), because the Jonathan administration reneged on the power shift arrangement which brought President Olusegun Obasanjo to power in 1999.

The NEF spokesman said that the north was not given positions in the Federal Executive Council that are commensurate with its voting strength. He pointed out that the Ministries that have direct bearing on the economy, are not in the hands of northerners, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture is the only exception. Professor Abdullahi further said that the north only got 30% out of the capital projects that have been earmarked in the 2016 appropriation bill, adding that the North East, North West and North Central got 3%, 9% and 19% respectively. "Imagine, the north east which was ravaged by Boko Haram only got 3%. In terms of recurrent expenditure which is mainly paying salaries and servicing the day-to-day running of government, the north is also short changed because as at 10 years ago, only 18% of federal civil servants are northerners,’’ he said.

Foreign AffairsAl Qaeda Threatens To Attack U.S. On Election Day by aboy247(op): 6:07pm On Nov 05, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Al-Qaeda.jpg

Federal Authorities in the United States have warned of an unspecific threat attacks by al Qaeda around Election Day.
The authorities issues a high threat alert on New York City, Texas and Virginia and have put local law enforcement on alert days before the vote.

According to Reuters, a U.S. government source in Washington said some federal agencies sent bulletins to local and state officials flagging the information but that the threat was relatively low level.

The White House said it was aware of the reported al Qaeda threats and mindful of increased risk of attacks during events such as Election Day.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement his office was monitoring the situation and urged Texans to remain vigilant. In Virginia, Brian Coy, a spokesman for Governor Terry McAuliffe, said: “We are doing everything we can to keep Virginians safe, and we’re confident they are going to be able to vote safely on Election Day.”

Steve Coleman, spokesman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, says high level patrol has been implemented in airports, tunnels and bridges around New York City. Coleman declined to offer details on the warning, but the New York City Police Department said the threat report lacked specifics and was still being assessed.

“We are aware of the information,” the department said in a statement, adding that it was working with intelligence agencies and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Although some of the attention of U.S. authorities has shifted to Islamic State-inspired attacks, the al Qaeda network has shown resilience more than 15 years after it was responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and the Pentagon.
Recall that the U.S. carries out attacks in Afghanistan in October which targeted two of al Qaeda’s senior leaders there.

Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence agencies still view al Qaeda and its affiliates as a top counter terrorism priority.

PoliticsHow To Identify Fake Naira Notes by aboy247(op): 6:56pm On Nov 03, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/naira_notes.gif

Con men cannot produce a real naira note. That’s a fact. Even if they can, they can’t produce real note without bloating overhead cost. In view of this, there is always obvious differences between a real naira note and it’s counterfeit. These differences are not hidden; they are there only if you look well enough, even for an untrained eye. You should also avail yourself of the fact that the use of counterfeits is punishable under the Nigerian constitution whether you’re aware or note because “ignorance is not an excuse in the court of law”.

Taking advantage of the marked differences between real and counterfeit naira notes, I’m going to list ways you can identity counterfeits\1. Through Mercury Bulbs

In the real paper naira notes (₦100, ₦200, ₦500, ₦1000), they are some texts that are not visible to the Unclad eye; they are only visible through the rays from a mercury bulb. So, to verify the authenticity of a naira note, bring the said note in contact with rays from a mercury bulb. If it’s real, you’ll see a greenish-yellow glow of the note’s denomination across it. For example if it’s a ₦1000 note, you’ll see a glowing 1000 (in numbers) written across the note and smaller 1000 written on specific spots on it. The same goes for other paper denominations.

If the money is in a stack or bundle and you want to test for counterfeits, arrange the monies (it should be the same denomination all-through) properly (i.e. the front of each note in the bundle in contact with the back of the next note and top to top and bottom to bottom) and subject a side of it to rays from the mercury lamp, the greenish-yellow glow should be visible on the first and last note in the bundle if no counterfeit(s) is hiding in it. In either the single note and the bundle (if properly arranged), absence of this greenish-yellow glow means the note or a note in the bundle is fake.

Sorry, I couldn’t get you the picture but the glow is very visible. Make sure to switch-off other light sources so as not to hamper the result. While mercury bulb is available at shops where electrical materials are sold, this method is preferable for business owners or people who handle bulk cash.

2. Through Water Or Other Liquids

The colours used in printing counterfeits are soluble in water and some other liquids while that of real money is not. Wet the suspected money or a part of it with water or any other liquid—I have only tried water and petrol—and scrub the wet part with your thumb. Counterfeits will wash-off their colours as you do this but real will not. Do you notice the way the colours of an artwork painted with water-colours wash-off when water touches it? That’s the kind of wash-off I mean.

3. Through The Ribbons

On every paper money on the naira is a thin silvery ribbon running from the top to the bottom of the note; it’s roppy on old notes.

In real note, you can feel and even pull-out this ribbon on some old notes.
However, in counterfeits, there’s something that looks like a ribbon but it’s not—just paint. Try scratching that ribbon, it come off like the silver panel on a recharge card.

4. Paper And Colour Quality

While counterfeits are made of ordinary papers, real money is made of a special kind of paper. Fealing the paper-quality of counterfeits, you’ll find out that it’s just like that of paper found on the street.
The colours of counterfeits also betrays it. The drawings on counterfeits are more blurry, blotchy and sometimes more darker than real paper money.

Of the four methods listed above, the first, second and third is more reliable.

PoliticsFG To Establish Information/communication Technology (ICT) University In Nigeria by aboy247(op): 8:46pm On Nov 02, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Mr-Adebayo-Shittu.jpg

The Federal Government has concluded plans to establish the first Information and Communication Technology (ICT) University in Nigeria within the next three months.
The Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, stated this on Tuesday while featuring in a quarterly radio programme, Guest of the month, at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Ibadan Zonal Office.

The minister spoke on “Harnessing the Potentials in the Communications Sector for Sustainable Development.’’ Shittu said that the university would be an off-shoot of an existing ICT-based institute, The Digital Bridge Institute , currently in operation in six centres across the country.“It is time to leverage on the bountiful opportunities in the Communications sector to generate additional revenue for government.
“We all know that ICT is now redefining how we live, how we deliver businesses and services in terms of government to government as well as between government and citizens,” he said.

He said that the university would be the first of its kind on the continent of Africa.

“We currently have what we call Digital Bridge Institute. It has six campuses- one in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Owerri, Yola and in Benue state. Shittu said that the present standard of education in the universities do not meet the needs of industry operators.

He said this informed the proposed upgrading of the Digital Bridge Institute.

The minister said the institute would become the ICT University in partnership with all the leading institutions in ICT throughout the world.

“I have had the privilege of speaking with a lot of operators throughout the world ,including Motorola, Mark Zuckerberg (FaceBook founder) and others.

“They have promised to partner with us and bring in a lot funding and logistics to be able to sustain such a university which will provide world class hands to train experts in telecoms industry,’’ the minister said.

He also said that he had embarked on administrative process to ensure that all the stakeholders were carried along in the establishment of the 21st century university. The minister said that as soon as the process was completed, Nigerians would see the birth of the institution.

“This will be the fastest means to create employment for our teeming youths, improve access and enhance quality of service delivery and affordability in our country.

“I took a memo to Mr President on it and he asked me to get the input of the Ministry of Education and the National University Commission (NUC).

“I am glad to say that I got positive inputs from the two agencies and we are at the stage of going to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.

“As soon as we get the approval of FEC, we will set up an implementation committee and within three months, we should be able to take off.

“The infrastructure are on ground because it is an existing institution that we are set to transform to the ICT University,” Shittu said.

PoliticsZuckerberg Is Helping Buhari To Kill Biafrans – IPOB by aboy247(op): 8:31pm On Nov 02, 2016

– The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused Mark Zuckerberg of removing the radio Biafra Facebook group, London, from the social media platform – IPOB says Facebook has made itself the wiling tool of repressive regimes and psychopathic murderers in power – The group warns that Zuckerberg will face divine retribution for siding with President Buhari
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the chief executive officer of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, of helping President Muhammadu Buhari to continue the mass murder of innocent Biafrans.
IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, who made the accusations in a statement on Saturday, October 29, also alleged that Zuckerberg removed the radio Biafra Facebook group, London, from the social media platform on the instructions of Buhari. “Radio Biafra London before its shut down by Zuckerberg who visited Buhari recently, was the biggest and most vibrant discussion forum on facebook with nearly 1 million members,” Powerful said.
“Why a man whose family benefited from the freedoms and opportunities the land of the free USA had to offer can turn around to brutally suppress freedom of speech and expression is beyond human understanding.
The group said Facebook had made itself the wiling tool of “repressive regimes and psychopathic murderers in power such as Major-General Muhammadu Buhari the Nigerian ruler”. IPOB warned Zuckerberg that he had sided with the devil by cutting a deal with Buhari, noting that it was the day that he made the deal with president that his Facebook satellite was destroyed at the launch pad. The group described the destruction of the Facebook satellite as the handwork of God, warning that Zuckerberg will face divine retribution for siding with Buhari.
“The God we serve will set an example with you that mankind may know that HE is the God of Biafrans. If you do not turn back from your evil ways. “Look at Nigeria today and know that God’s anger is upon her and her leaders because they dared to arrest Nnamdi Kanu. Satlink Israel lost their satellite because Buhari persuaded them to remove Radio Biafra satellite radio broadcast from their services. “Nobody comes against IPOB and survives it. We urge you to retrace your steps and reinstall Radio Biafra London Facebook group”, the group said. In another development, IPOB has lashed out at Igbo elders for associating with its planed All Igbo Summit scheduled to hold in Uturu Abia state in November. Vanguard reports that in a statement signed by Mr. Emma Powerful who is the media aide of the pro-Biafra group, it said it was not in support of the summit and insulted the elders who it said are only concerned about what they can get from Abuja. IPOB insisted that Nnamdi Kanu was its only recognised leader and that the quest for Biafra was its only focus.

PoliticsJonathan: “no Nigerian Was Sent To Prison For What They Said Or Wrote Under My W by aboy247(op): 7:24pm On Oct 31, 2016
https://nignews.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Former-President-Goodluck-Jonathan.jpg

Quotes from Goodluck Ebele Jonathan ‘ speech at Nigerian Lawyers Association in the USA Annual Gala Dinner

“Diversity could remain a strength only when all interest groups in the society feel safe and secured”
No matter what my critic said about me, I ensured thet there was both freedom of speech and freedom after the speech

Under my watch not a single Nigerian was sent to prison because of anything they wrote or said about me or the Administration that I headedNigeria had neither political prisoners nor political exile under my Administration.

This administration may not like these statements.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has implored Nigerians to continue to support democratic governance.

The former Nigerian leader spoke at a dinner he attended in the United States on Saturday evening.

“I urge the Nigerian lawyers in the US and those in the Diaspora to do their best to support the democratic institutions we have built,” Mr. Jonathan said.

The former president was the keynote speaker at the Nigerian Lawyers Association’s annual dinner and merit awards ceremony which held in New York.

In his speech posted on his Twitter page on Saturday, Mr. Jonathan mentioned some factors he considered to be his administration’s democratic credentials.

“Under my watch not a single Nigerian was sent to prison because of anything they wrote or said about me or the administration that I headed,” Mr. Jonathan said. “Nigeria had neither political prisoners nor political exile under my administration.”

Mr. Jonathan’s speech on Saturday comes at a time several of his aides are being detained and some prosecuted for alleged corrupt practices while many others have since absconded from the country.

Some of Mr. Jonathan’s former aides being prosecuted include ex-NSA Sambo Dasuki and former presidential aide Waripamowei Dudafa. Others being investigated and currently in detention include former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, and ex-Abuja minister Bala Mohammed. Some others like former aide Kingsley Kuku and ex-petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke have since left the country allegedly to avoid prosecution.

Mr. Jonathan’s speech also comes amidst an increasing crackdown by security agencies on citizen journalists and bloggers.

In Abia State, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu admitted to plotting the arrest of a blogger and indigene of his state, Emenike Iroegbu.

In Katsina, a blogger was arrested and detained for 22 days for posts criticising the administration of Governor Aminu Masari.

Within this period, PREMIUM TIMES reported no fewer than five cases of individuals being arrested and charged – or released – by the authorities for offences bordering on expressions.

In his speech, Mr. Jonathan also argued strongly for Nigeria’s diversity and its inherent benefits.

“Diversity could remain a strength only when all interest groups in the society feel safe and secure,” Mr. Jonathan said while speaking on the theme ‘Diversity As Our Bridge to Tomorrow.”

The former president said he carefully selected his cabinet members to reflect the diversity of Nigeria and warned against exploitation of the country’s fault lines by any leader.

“Most of my principal aides in government hailed from different ethnic nationalities,” Mr. Jonathan said. “We never placed ethno-religious interests above merits or individual values when making decisions.

“Nigeria is for all Nigerians. We must resist the push of ego that may make us want to pursue a regional or narrow agenda.”

Mr. Jonathan ended his speech with a touch on transparency and accountability.

“We enacted the Freedom of Information Act and by that we tore the veil of secrecy covering governance.

“We gave institutions unlimited freedom and ensured that the NBA, other professional institutions were devoid of any governmental influence.

“We ensured that appointments to INEC were not based on personal relationships,” he said.

While Mr. Jonathan did not make any direct reference to the current government in his speech, some Nigerians are already inferring that, with some saying he could be arrested.

On Twitter, a user, @Eloka51, said the former president’s unusually critical comments could be a precursor to his arrest.

“Just going through this thread. Looks like GEJ’s arrest is around the corner,” the user said.

Mr. Jonathan’s comments occur the same day Vice President Yemi Osinbajo spoke at Harvard University during which he said Mr. Jonathan could only be arrested if found culpable after completion of investigations.

Mr. Osinbajo’s statement marked most authoritative indication yet that the former president could actually be arrested.

In August, PREMIUM TIMES exclusively reported that Mr. Buhari had ordered investigation of Mr. Jonathan for alleged ties to the resurgent militancy in the Niger-Delta.

The former president denied the allegations.

Mr. Jonathan’s wife, Patience, recently had accounts linked to her frozen. She has since filed a suit in court seeking $200 million damages against the anti-graft commission, EFCC, for freezing $15 million she claims is hers.

PoliticsUpdate: Orji Kalu Pleads Not Guilty To Money Laundery Charges by aboy247(op): 7:15pm On Oct 31, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Gov.-Orji-Uzor-Kalu.jpg

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday charged former Gov. Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia with money laundering before a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Kalu is charged alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Ltd., and his former Commissioner for Finance, Jones Ude, on 34 counts bordering on money laundering.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
After the plea, counsel to the accused, Mr Mike Ozekhome (SAN), urged the trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, to allow the accused to continue with an earlier bail condition.
Ozekhome informed the court that the accused had earlier been arraigned before Justice Nyako, Adamu Bello and Uweh, all of Abuja Federal High Courts before they were re-arraigned today.

The prosecutor, Mr Adeniyi Adebisi, did not oppose the submission of defence counsel.

Adebisi, however, added that EFCC was only interested in the justice of the case which included the trial of the accused persons. Idris consequently, adjourned the case to Dec. 12 and 13 for trial and ordered that the accused continue with the subsisting bail terms. In the charge, the accused were alleged to have committed the offence between August 2001 and October 2005.

Kalu was alleged to have utilised his company to retain in the account of a First Inland Bank, now FCMB, N200 million.

The sum is alleged to have formed part of funds illegally derived from the coffers of the Abia State Government.

In one of the counts, his company (Slok Nig Ltd) and one Emeka Abone, who is said to be at large, were also alleged to have retained in the company’s account N200 million, on behalf of the first accused.

They were alleged to have utilised Manny Bank (now Fidelity Bank Plc), Spring Bank Plc, the defunct Standard Trust Bank and Finland Bank, now First City Monument Bank (FCMB).

In counts one to 10, the accused were alleged to have retained about N2.5 billion in different accounts which funds were said to belong to the Abia State Government.

Cumulatively in all the counts, the accused were alleged to have diverted over N3.2 billion from the Abia State Government’s treasury during Kalu’s tenure as governor.

The offence is said to have contravened the provisions of sections 15(6), 16, and 21 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2005. It is also said to have contravened the provisions of the Money Laundering Act of 1995 as amended by the amendment Act No. 9 of 2002 and section 477 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation, 1990. PoliticsArms Deal: How We Moved N1.2bn Cash For Fayose – Banker by aboy247(op): 4:42pm On Oct 28, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Fayose-b.jpg

The trial of Abiodun Agbele, an aide to Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose got twisted on Thursday with the testimony of its first witness Mr. Sunday Oluseye Alade.

Alade, 54, a banker told the court how he, along with some other officials of a bank and others received N1,219,490,000 cash brought into Akure airport on June 17, 2014 by ex-Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro and two others. The witness, who works in the Akure branch of the bank, gave details of how two aircraft brought the cash on two occasions, same day and how they moved the cash in a bullion van.

Agbele was arraigned before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja on August 3, 2016 on 11 counts of money laundering involving about N4,685,723,000,000, allegedly taken by former National Security Adviser (NSA) from the account of the office of the NSA domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The prosecution alleged that the accused knew the N4,685,723,000,000 formed part of the proceeds of alleged unlawful activities by Dasuki.

The prosecution alleged that on June 17, 2014, Agbele, Obanikoro and other suspects (said to be at large), took N1,219,000,000 from the total N4,685,723,000,000, when they “reasonably ought to have known” that the money was part of proceeds of Dasuki’s unlawful activity.”

Alade, who was led in evidence yesterday by prosecution lawyer Wahab Shittu, also gave details of how Agbele allegedly supervised the lodgment of the cash into different accounts, including those allegedly belonging to Fayose, his company, Spotless Investment and others.

PoliticsShell Resumes Crude Exports From Nigeria’s Forcados Terminal – FG by aboy247(op): 7:43pm On Oct 26, 2016
https://nigerianewsnow.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Shell_logo.svg_-777x437.png

Royal Dutch Shell has resumed crude exports from the Forcados terminal in Nigeria’s restive Niger Delta following repairs after a militant attack, the Nigerian presidency said on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Shell declined to comment.
“The Shell Director, Mr. Andrew Brown, informed the President of the resumption of oil exportation through the Forcados terminal following its restoration,” the presidency said after a meeting between Brown and President Muhammadu Buhari.

Brown is in charge of Shell’s upstream business.

Forcados crude has been under force majeure from operator Shell since a militant attack on the subsea pipeline in February, part of a wave against oil facilities in the Delta.

Forcados exports were between 250,000 and 300,000 barrels per day prior to the strike claimed by a militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers.

The Nigerian oil ministry had earlier said in a tweet the OPEC member’s oil output had risen to 1.9 million bpd, up from the previously reported 1.4 million bpd. It did not explain why.

“Brown commended the anti-corruption posture of the Buhari administration as well as the efforts to streamline and stabilise the economy for long term projects, saying all the efforts will go a long way to reinforce Shell investment plans in Nigeria,” the presidency statement said.

Brown also called for a “continued protection by the Nigerian navy in view of repeated threats of attack by militants”.

Food15 Surprising Things You Can Do With Coca-cola – Aside Drinking It by aboy247(op): 6:55pm On Oct 26, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/bottle-of-coke-644x437.jpg

When Coca-Сola is mentioned, what comes to your mind? A sweet, chilled soft drink that can quench your thirst, perhaps?

What you probably didn’t know is that your favourite carbonated candy can be used for a lot more than just drinking.

Here are 15 other things this sweet drink is useful for.

1. Take rust off

Do you have a rusted metal surface you would like to clean? How about pouring some Coke on it. The trace amounts of phosphoric acid are enough to corrode rust and keep your metal surface like bicycle spokes and car bumper looking like new.

Side note: Use tin foil to rub the Coke into the rust and watch it disappear.

2. Get out blood stains

Got some blood on an article of clothing? Sprinkle a can of Coke in with your regular laundry detergent and water, and wait for the magic to happen.

3. Remove grease

If you have cookware which had been covered in grease and soapy water is not working, soak the greasy spots in some coke and let it sit for about a half hour.

4. Fix your car battery

When you have some car battery issues like a dirty battery terminal, the acidity of Coca-Cola is just enough to clean the oxidized terminals.

5. Loosen bolts that are stuck

It can be very frustrating when you have stuck bolts. Applying coke can help. The phosphoric acid will react with the rust and free those pesky bolts.

6. Get chewing gum out of your hair

Having to deal getting gum out of your hair with minimal damage can be a challenge. Coke can help you out here too. Simply drizzle some Coca-Cola into your hair. The ingredients in the Coke will break down the gum. It also works if you have gum stuck on your shoes.

7. Reduces pain from bug bites and stings

Next time you get stung by a bee or bitten by an insect (or jellyfish’s tentacle!) pour some Coke on the bite/sting to neutralize the pain.

8. Clean windows and mirrors

Those delicious acids found in coke work incredibly well on grimed up windows and mirrors. Just rinse it off with water so no sticky residue gets left behind.

9. Clean your toilet

If you run out of toilet cleaner, a can of Coke will work wonders on your toilet. Literally just dump a can into the toilet bowl, let it sit for about an hour then give it a good scrub. You will be rewarded with a sparkling toilet bowl.

10. Polish jewelry

If you want to breathe new life into your old jewelry. dip your precious metals in a glass of Coke and let them sit overnight. Give them a light scrub the next morning with an old rag and they’ll look like new.

11. Kill snails

The acid in Coca Cola can be harmful to things like slugs and snails.

READ ALSO: Can you cut a rope with no knife? Just see what this guy does!

12. Clean tiles

Simply pour some coke on the tiles, leave for a few minutes then wipe off.

13. Clean burnt pots, pans, and kettles

Soak your pans in coke, then rinse. Same goes for kettle and pots.

14. Remove dye

Did you know you can remove or fade dye on your hair by pouring coke all over it? Cool, huh?

15. Removes marker stains

If you have marker stains on a surface like your clothes, for instance, applying cock then scrubbing and cleaning with soapy water will remove them.

PoliticsTension As Ritualists Invade Community In Rivers State by aboy247(op): 6:43pm On Oct 26, 2016
https://nigerianewstoday.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Nyesom-wike-1.jpg

There is pandemonium in Rumuolumeni community in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers state following the alleged invasion of ritualists in the area.
Governor Nyesome Wike of Rivers state has a lot to do to rid the state of criminal elements

According to Leadership, residents of the area discovered the remains of an unidentified man in a bush, close to the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) with his manhood missing.A source quoted in the report but pleaded anonymity, said the deceased looked like a Fulani herdsman, adding he was most likely dragged into the bush and clubbed to death.“A corpse was found this morning in a bush around Eagle Cement Company. The body looks like a Fulani man. Policemen from Rumuolumeni Police Station have taken the body,” the source said.

Rivers state has been a den for ritualists, cultists, kidnappers and the likes for a while.

A prominent lawyer and rights activist in the state was recently killed and this action has elicited anger in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Meanwhile, a cult group raided Eteo community in Eleme local government area of Rivers state, killing scores of people, including a pregnant woman.

The raid was carried out in the night of Saturday, October 15. The community has become a ghost town as residents have deserted the community seeking refuge at Ogale, Alode, Alesa and Agbonchia communities, all in Eleme local government area of the state.

In July, Governor Nyesome Wike personally led a team of security personnel to demolish slums where criminals and cultists hibernated in the state. The demolition exercise took place in Port Harcourt and Obio Akpor local government areas. But the governor’s action seem not to have detered criminal elements in the state.
