My husband called me at about 6:40 AM, Friday the 21st of November 2014, from work. He asked me to come and pick him up, that he was not feeling too good. I left with the driver to get him. When I got there, he was too uncomfortable, and he asked me to take him home. But on our way home, I noticed that he was in pains, so I asked the driver to reverse the car and head instead to the hospital (St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos). On reaching there, we met Judith, the receptionist. I asked if there was a Doctor around. This was around 7 PM. She said yes and after some time we were asked to go into Room 2. Right there we met a young Doctor called Dr. Ogidigben Kevwe. He asked a few questions that I answered while my husband was wallowing in pains. He (Kevwe) opened an emergency file because according to him, my husband’s file was locked up in Dr. Bamgboye’s office, and no one has access to that office. I told Dr. Kevwe that my husband had incisional hernia surgery done a few months back at the same hospital, August to be precise and it was performed by one Dr. Mohan an India man, and Dr. Balogun at St. Nicholas Hospital. He started to examine him. He then left us in his office and said he was coming back. He came back after some minutes and said he was trying to reach Dr. Balogun from the reception, but he is not getting through. So I used my husband’s phone and dialed Balogun and got through. At this point, I gave the phone to Dr. Kevwe, and he started explaining to Dr. Balogun, what he thought was the problem. Balogun on the other end asked if my husband was in pains, and Kevwe said yes. Dr. Kevwe told Dr. Balogun that he was suspecting intestinal obstruction. Dr. Balogun asked if there was any swelling around where the incision was done, but Dr.Kevwe said no. Balogun asked if there was any reddish sign around the same area, and Kevwe said no. So Dr. Kevwe suggested giving him antibiotics, but Balogun said that they have to be careful what they give him, since he is a post kidney transplant patient. Balogun asked them to give him a particular injection twice to ease the pains, and he said that they should observe him till the next morning. So I left to go get him what he had asked for (his tea and his stockings). On my way around Bonny Camp, I got a call from a strange number, when I picked up; it was Dr. Kevwe, on the other end. He asked me to turn back to come pick up my husband, and I asked why? He (Kevwe) said that my Husband is feeling much better, and wants to go home. I asked the driver to reverse and head back to the hospital. And on getting there, I went in and asked the Dr. again why he wants me to take him home. He repeated once again that he feels much better and I asked Kevwe if he was asking me to take him home because he thinks he feels better or that the hospital doesn’t have a bed for him. I asked this because the nurse had mentioned earlier that she needed to check for bed space. Kevwe at this point told me that my Husband would be fine, he asked me to take my Husband home and bring him the following morning. Meanwhile, before then, Kewe wrote a prescription of drugs for my husband which I took to the pharmacist and when the lady there saw it, she asked which Dr. I saw. I told her that it was Dr. Kewe. She moved over to the other side and called the Dr’s office. They both argued about the drug that he wrote, she then gave me just1 tablet of Exforge. When my husband got up from the hospital bed, he staggered and I held him and asked if he’s fine. The Dr. said that it’s the injection that was given to him that he would be fine. So I took him home. We got home. And just about 15minutes after, my husband said he felt like throwing up. I brought a bowl to him, and he vomited, and he felt a bit better. He slept for some time and got up in excruciating pain. Immediately I jumped into my clothes and then called Dr. Balogun, to say that we are on our way back to the hospital. He said no problem that the doctor will be waiting for me. I asked, which doctor? And he said the doctor is their senior surgeon by the name Dr. Fadiran. Balogun said that Dr. Fadiran was the doctor on call. We got to the hospital in less than 20 minutes; my husband came down from the car himself. He walked into the hospital by himself before he was wheeled into the ER. Then came Dr. Kevwe, and I asked him about the senior surgeon, and he told me that he would be coming very soon. I wasn’t too happy with that, as I had mentioned to Dr. Balogun that my husband was in serious pains. I expected to see a consultant like he said. Kevwe started by trying to put him on a drip that took forever, as he was unable to successfully get his veins while my husband was languishing in pain. My husband kept telling them (DR. Kevwe and the nurse) that he wants to throw up or use the restroom, and he would be fine. He kept saying that if he throws up he will be fine. Meanwhile, Dr. Kevwe was taking instructions on the phone from Dr. Fadiran. This was when I asked when the Dr. would come. I kept asking, “when will the doctor come?” And Dr. Kevwe said Dr. Fadiran asked him to get my entire husband’s information. DR. Kevwe told me that they are waiting for the Radiologist and the Anesthesiologist, and none of these people showed up. My husband kept on saying that he wants to throw up. But then, Dr. Kevwe asked the nurse to give him an injection, I asked what the injection was for? And he said it will stop him from vomiting. He became so uncomfortable and was losing his breath. They put him on oxygen, but I guess he was already choking. Meanwhile, Kevwe was still taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone. At this time, he started gasping for air. Meanwhile, before then, another doctor showed up. I don’t know his name, but he’s average in height and dark complexioned. He inserted a suction tube into his mouth, but I guess he was two hours or more late with that. Because if that was done when I brought him to the hospital that morning, he would have been here with me today. If Dr. Fadiran were at the hospital, even after he was told that it was an emergency; my husband would have been here with me. If the anesthesiologist was at the hospital, he probably would have been here with me. If the radiologist were around on that morning to at least see what was happening inside of him, he probably would have been here with me. If Dr. Kevwe knew exactly what he was doing that morning without taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone, with an emergency case right in front of him, my husband would have been here. My husband died of total negligence on the part of St. Nicholas Hospital, and I know it. Like I said earlier, the doctor was 2 hours plus late with the suction, because, at this time, the nurse was already calling my husband’s name, shouting “Mr. Charles, Mr. Charles!” He was given four adrenaline injections. The drip wasn’t going at all, all this while lest I forget. I watched my husband struggled to breath. I watched him fight for his life, and I was right there when he died. And even though they were busy with CPR, I knew when he passed on because immediately he stopped struggling, fluid started gushing out of his mouth and nose, I knew that was it. That was the same fluid that was choking him. If there were a senior consultant or surgeon at the hospital as at when I brought him, he probably, would have been helped. In between all this, Dr. Kevwe at a time said to Dr. Fadiran on the phone that he should come now as the patient is in a critical condition. He said to the same Dr. Fadiran that 11 O’clock might be too late. I brought my husband at about 6 AM to St. Nicholas Hospital and he died at about 9.30AM without receiving prompt and adequate care. Human life cannot continue to be lost soo cheaply in Nigerian Hospital, people must be made to account for their actions as professionals hence I have contacted my Lawyers to investigate the cause of death as he has died with our dreams, aspirations, and vision and planned future together. http://saharareporters.com/2015/10/18/how-stnicholas-hospital-doctors-killed-chaz-b-chinyere-roselin-chukuma

The police and the army have beefed up security in the Federal Capital Territory following Friday night’s suicide bomb attacks. Armed policemen and soldiers were drafted to different parts of the city on Saturday. SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that besides Friday’s bomb blasts, the deployment of security agents might have been informed by intelligence reports that the Boko Haram insurgents could have sent more suicide bombers to the FCT. Heavily armed security agents were sighted checking vehicles on Abuja-Keffi Road; Airport Road; Asokoro and Wuse areas of the FCT. Two female suicide bombers suspected to be members of the Boko Haram struck at the Kuje Market and near a police station in the area almost simultaneously on Friday night. Also, two suicide bombers (a male and a female) attacked Nyanya, where the Boko Haram had in April 14 and May 1, 2014 struck killing 70 people. On Friday, many police operatives wearing EOD vests (Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit) were sighted at the blast scenes in Nyanya and Kuje. The massive deployment of policemen followed an order by the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, that Police Explosives Ordinance Disposal Units be immediately deployed on the scenes. The IG, in a statement by the Force spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, assured Nigerians of security, noting that the “Force is prepared to do all within its reach to ensure adequate security of lives and property.” The statement added, “Following the incidents, the Police High Command ordered an immediate deployment of Police Explosives Ordinance Disposal Units to the scenes to prevent further destructions and ordered massive stop-and-search activities in and around the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.” According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate the bomb blasts were carried out by two suicide bombers — a male and a female. The Force admonished Nigerians to be vigilant at all times and to report any suspicious persons or objects. Military roadblocks return Also, roadblocks manned by armed soldiers have resurfaced at strategic parts of the FCT. The military roadblocks, which were hitherto dismantled by President Muhammadu Buhari had been reinstated at Nyanya-Abuja expressway while another one was mounted at AYA Roundabout, causing serious traffic jams. Fear of suicide bombers in FCT Fear has also gripped residents of the city because of reports that the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. Some of the residents, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH, said that the use of four suicide bombers might be an indication that the Boko Haram sect had deployed more of such people in the city. A resident of Nyanya, Michael Babatunde, said, “One has to be careful now because if four suicide bombers could strike on the same day, it means more of them are around.” Security beefed up in hospitals Security checks were also being conducted by soldiers at the National Hospital; Asokoro General Hospital and other health facilities, where victims were being treated. Motorists and visitors to the hospitals were thoroughly searched before they were allowed to enter the facilities. Meanwhile, the blasts scene had been cordoned off by a team of policemen and soldiers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel. Pieces of human flesh, torn clothing and personal effects were strewn all over the spot which is a relaxation place for commercial motorists and motorcyclists. FCT picks medical bill of victims The FCT Permanent Secretary, John Chukwu, has directed hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory to take adequate care of victims of the bomb blasts, adding that the FCT would pick all their medical bills. The Permanent Secretary gave the directive while visiting the sites of the unfortunate attacks in Kuje and Nyanya. Chukwu, who was also at the Kuje General Hospital and the National Hospital, Abuja where the injured persons were taken to, stated that the “FCT Administration will provide full medical treatment to all those injured in the unfortunate incident.” He directed the FCT Health and Human Services Secretariat and the FCT Emergency Management Agency to redouble their efforts and he commended them on their prompt response to the attacks. Chukwu further directed that any serious case should be urgently referred to a specialist hospital to mitigate the pains. It was learnt that 15 injured persons were being treated at the National Hospital while 10 dead victims were in its mortuary. The hospital employees told journalists that they were still trying to stabilise some victims, stressing that that most injured persons would not be allowed to speak as they were not fully fit as at the time of filing this report. The hospital’s Deputy Director, Clinical Services, Dr. Jawah Mohammed, expressed hope that some of the victims would be able to relate with and receive visitors beginning from Sunday and pleaded with guests who came to see some of the victims to hold on till then. US sympathises with victims In a related development, the US has condemned the dual explosions in the FCT and the suicide bombings and militant attacks in Maiduguri and Adamawa on October 1. It extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured, according to a statement by the Press Attaché, US embassy, Abuja, Sean McIntosh. “These tragic events are stark reminders that violent extremists will stop at nothing to inflict horrific and indiscriminate harm upon innocent lives. In particular, Boko Haram’s reign of terror and sheer brutality have left thousands dead and millions displaced. “The United States stands with the government and the people of Nigeria to defeat Boko Haram and other perpetrators of terrorism. Through our security and counterterrorism assistance, our unparalleled commitment aims to help Nigeria achieve this goal,” the statement said. http://www.punchng.com/news/suicide-bombing-tight-security-in-fct/

Arewa consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday expressed embarrassment and disappointment with the Pan- Yoruba group, Afenifere, for calling on the federal government to abolish nomadic cattle rearing to stop alleged criminal activities by herdsmen in Yoruba land. ACF was reacting to a statement made by the leadership of Afenifere following the kidnapping and release of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and elder statesman, Chief Olu Falae by some persons suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. Afenifere was said to have issued a communiqué after a meeting, saying, “If the Federal Government fails to stop Fulani herdsmen from attacking Yoruba people, it may result in a situation where the South-west people will have to defend themselves”. However, a statement issued by ACF National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim, said, “ACF considers Afenifere statement as reckless and unbecoming of a highly respected group like the Afenifere that chooses to criminalize a whole race or tribe or region instead of the individual criminals, moreover, our law books provides the process of dealing with such suspected criminals rather than arrogating such powers to ourselves. “Nigeria has over 250 tribes and Yoruba is just one of them, for it to threaten other tribes just because of an alleged crime of some suspected herdsmen is unnecessary, emotional and contrary to the spirit and letters of the Nigerian constitution which guarantees free movement and association of citizens in any part of the country”. This was even as the ACF also condemned Friday suicide bombing of Nyanya and Kuje areas of Abuja, saying the incident was too worrisome despite success being recorded by the military in tackling Boko Haram insurgency. “ACF is also saddened by the news of the multiple suicide bomb blasts that occurred on Thursday 1st October in Maiduguri and that of Friday night at Kuje and Nyanya in the FCT all within the week, which killed scores of innocent people and injured many. “This recent and frequent bomb attacks on innocent people is worrisome despite the successes being recorded by the military in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency. “ACF once more urges the security agencies to be more proactive in the discharge of their responsibilities while the community should be more vigilant and also share intelligence with the security agencies to avert these unwarranted bombings. “ACF extends its condolences to the families of those killed by the bomb blast, the Government and people of Borno state and the FCT and also appeals to the authorities to take care of the injured and provide them with basic rehabilitation needs,” the statement added. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/dont-brand-fulani-herdsmen-as-criminals-acf-warns/ |

That is a tall order but one that is now squarely on the feet of President Muhammadu Buhari to realize or to bungle. And he must be prepared to do it irrespective of what the opposition is saying, doing or thinking. http://saharareporters.com/2015/09/30/buhari’s-tall-order-and-wailing-wailers-rudolf-ogoo-okonkwo |
Buhari’s Tall Order and the Wailing Wailers By Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo And the fundamentals in question are not brain surgery, nanotechnology or rocket science. They are simple things like: the commonwealth belongs to all Nigerians and not just the privileged few; that government service is not another word for self enrichment; that instituting merit ultimately lifts everybody up while mediocrity does the exact opposite; that there are consequences for bad behaviors irrespective of who is in the wrong; and that every life matters in that country of ours. BY RUDOLF OGOO OKONKWOSEP 30, 2015 The first hundred days in office for President Muhammadu Buhari has since passed. The next landmark in the horizon will be one year in office. By the end of this week, the potential ministers must have been named. The argument about who deserves to be there and who should not have been named will last for the next few weeks. Once the ministers are sworn in, the new government should settle down to deliver on election promises. In an ideal world, that is where we should be now. But the buzz out there is totally different. Something happened to Nigeria on its way to transitioning from Jonathan to Buhari. It is something that has never happened before- at least not up to this degree. To be able to understand what happened, we need to look at a similar story in another country. When the U. S. Supreme Court decided on the Florida contested election results in 2000 and awarded the Presidential election to George W. Bush, even though Al Gore won the popular vote, it created distrust in the minds of a large segment of Americans, especially those on the left. Many of the dissatisfied Americans considered the George W. Bush’s presidency illegitimate until September 11, 2001 terrorist attack brought all Americans together. But the bad blood did not go away. When Bush decided to attack Iraq as part of his global war on terror, it widened the gap between him and those who felt his presidency was illegitimate. His opponents mounted greater campaign against his war, his policies and, to some extent, his whole presidency even when he won reelection in 2004. Towards the end of his term, when the whole world economy collapsed under his watch, his opponents were quick to gloat, “We told you so.” Then enters Barack Obama. The primary reason he won was because America wanted to move as far away from George W. Bush as they could. And nobody in the 2008 contest represented that distance from Bush the way Obama did. If Bush was a C- student, Obama was an A-student. If Bush was inarticulate, Obama was eloquent. The change took place but a new set of bad blood was unleashed as some adherents of the old order put up resistance. They also borrowed a book from the anti-Bush group by trying to delegitimize the Obama presidency. It was in vogue until Obama won reelection in 2012. That sucked up the energy of the opposition. When the then Vice President Jonathan inherited the presidency following the death of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, bad blood developed within some sectors in Nigeria, especially in the north where some felt that Yar’Adua did not have the chance to complete his term and so would have preferred another of their own to complete Yar’Adua’s term. They constituted an opposing force to Jonathan’s presidency. Faced with such opposition, President Jonathan failed to rise up to the occasion. He allowed the opposition to define him. As if that was not bad enough, he molded himself according to the definition of his opponents. Fast forward to today. The only reason why Buhari defeated Jonathan was because in the most important things that mattered to Nigerians on election eve, he was the candidate furthest away from Jonathan. Buhari’s defeat of Jonathan in the 2015 election has created an animosity with the astute supporters of Jonathan now in stern opposition to Buhari’s presidency. They have vowed to subject Buhari to the same kind of opposition and criticism they felt Jonathan received from the Buhari supporters. They have defined the Buhari presidency even before he appointed his ministers. The only thing left is to see if Buhari will fulfill the prophesies of those who have defined him, just like Jonathan did, or whether he will rise above it, just like Obama did and present his own narrative. The choice is Buhari’s. All these may look messy, but in the final analysis, they are all good for the growth of our democracy. When the citizenry, no matter the motivation, holds their elected representatives accountable, the nation benefits. All cries by those in power that these facets of a vibrant democracy are distractions should be ignored. They are usually complaints of politicians who are not prepared for governance. The noise of the opposition should not stop a determined government with concrete ideas and plans on how to build a nation. For both the government and the opposition, propaganda stops when confronted with performance. The silver lining in all of these is that, if sustained, they can crystal into a way that Nigeria can develop politics that goes beyond personalities to one that deals with philosophical and ideological issues and differences. It may have started with the deafening enquiry into where appointees hail from, what religion they subscribe to and how tall they are. But over time, it has the potential to focus on more substantial issues. But this will not happen if unprepared and over-pampered political actors stunt the present line of inquiry. With Nigeria’s long history as a dysfunctional nation, it isn’t realistic to expect a Kenyan kind of transformation from Kenyatta to Moi to Kibaki and back to a Kenyatta. In the last 50 years, Nigeria has been all over the place, picking up worms and germs along the way. There is no doubt that Nigeria needed a return to some form of fundamentals to be able to take any kind of linear jump. And the fundamentals in question are not brain surgery, nanotechnology or rocket science. A transition from Obasanjo to Yar’Adua failed to advance the nation primarily because Yar’Adua was not healthy enough to show what he could do. The transition from Yar’Adua to Jonathan on the superficial level was a big leap. But when it came to what really matters in core indexes of good governance, Jonathan did not try, and he did not pretend to try, and worst of it all, he did not give a damn that he did not try. His term in office was a series of retrogressive steps. Once back, there was no possible way of jumping forward without efforts to fix what was wrong from the onset. Buhari’s administration is not going to give Nigeria the 21st century government that some young ones wish- not that Jonathan’s government was on the verge of pushing Nigeria into that glorious era. The only hope there is for anyone who wants to be hopeful is that Buhari’s government may create the environment where that 21st century government can emerge. If it does come, it will not come easy- not by command, not by prayer, and not by blaming those who have left the scene. If it comes, it will come from the sweat of those who are deeply committed to making sacrifices so that Nigeria will finally find its way into the league of nations where the future for the young ones are assured. That is a tall order but one that is now squarely on the feet of President |
Thanks be Almigthy Allah the mericiful and benevolent the Federal Republic of Nigeria is 55 years Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Boko Haram has embarked on poisoning water sources in some communities in Borno State where they were either dislodged or threatened by a military offensive, the army has said. Deputy Director Army Public Relations and spokesman of the 7th Division Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Colonel Tukur Gusau, in a statement yesterday in Maiduguri said the insurgents “have now resorted to poisoning water sources like wells and streams” in some villages especially in the northern part of the state where some cattle were found dead by troops after drinking water from the poisoned streams and wells. “Some cattle were killed after drinking water from some poisoned sources. The latest being the poisoning of the cattle water ponds in Kangallam village along Marte and Abadam axis in Borno State where a large number of cattle died after drinking water from the ponds,” Col. Gusau said. He said that no human life has been lost as a result of the “terrorists barbaric act”, adding that the Theatre Command of the counter-insurgency operation in the northeast has “credible information” that Boko Haram had “resorted to poisoning water sources like wells and streams in areas they were dislodged by gallant troops in areas threatened by offensive operations.” The army spokesman said the insurgents’ action was aimed at “taking their own pound of flesh on innocent citizens and livestock as a result of the unbearable offensive operations through the combined effort of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force to rout them completely from their enclaves and hide-outs all over the northeast.” He urged the people in the affected areas to “avoid as much as possible drinking water from unverified sources especially in locations that troops routed out Boko Haram terrorists.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/boko-haram-poisons-water-sources-in-borno-villages/ |
…Three villages attacked, 50 houses destroyed From David Molomo, Yola BOKO Haram, has attacked N’gourtoi, a Nigerien village, sharing borders with Yobe State, killing a village head and 14 people. Hassan Ardo, an official with the Diffa State Governor’s Office, told newsmen that the attackers burnt down 22 houses and wounded many other residents. The region is said to have suffered deadly attacks from Boko Haram. Niger is a part of a military coalition with Chad, Benin Republic, Cameroon and Nigeria, called the Multinational Join Task Force (MNJTF) to combat Boko Haram, which has waged war against Nigeria since 2009. In a related development, a gang of gunmen suspected to be fleeing Boko Haram terrorists, have attacked three villages, ravaging over 50 houses in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Sources in Michika- Madagali axis of the state disclosed that the fleeing insurgents were around the bushes and mountainous areas of Madagali area which is situated few metres away from Borno State boarder, where the suspected insurgents launched an attack on Sabon Gari, Kafin Hausa and Dutse biyu villages. The sources further disclosed that, as soon as the villagers sighted the insurgents, they took to their heels in different directions. The development gave the insurgents the liberty to raze down many houses in the villages. When contacted on phone, Acting Brigade Commander of the 23rd Armored Brigade of the Nigerian Army Yola, Colonel ABA Popoola confirmed the attack, but maintained no one was killed. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/village-head-14-others-killed-in-nigerien-boko-haram-attack/ |
