7 Ways Rich, Successful People Create Their Own Happiness Thomas C. Corley, Contributor Dec. 24, 2014, 3:02 PM Thanks to my five-year study of the habits of the rich and poor, I've accumulated an enormous amount of research data on the habits that are responsible for creating a life of abundance (wealth) or scarcity (poverty). But there's more to living a "rich" life than the accumulation of money. Money, as an end to itself, does not create a "rich" life. A "rich" life exists only when we find happiness. Happiness, unfortunately, is elusive. Most people are, in fact, unhappy and most of those unhappy people will do anything to pursue happiness. Unfortunately, some of the methods they use to pursue happiness are destructive. Drugs, alcohol, infidelity, gambling, and many other vices are examples of activities individuals engage in to find temporary happiness. These vices eventually become Poverty Habits. When these Poverty Habits no longer bring about their short-term happiness, we tend to move on to another vice, which soon becomes another Poverty Habit. This trend often continues for an entire lifetime. It is a destructive trend that causes divorce, job loss, failing health, and ultimately, an unhappy life. Long-term happiness, I found from my research, comes from within, not from external sources. Pursuing happiness externally is a recipe for a failed, miserable life. You must make happiness a daily habit. Some Background on Happiness The book, "The How of Happiness," cites various studies on happiness. One such study determined the following: 50% of happiness is gene-based 40% of happiness is activity-based 10% of happiness is circumstance-based Your genetic makeup determines your "happiness baseline." This is the baseline you revert to before and after happiness events and unhappiness events. This baseline is the reason why buying mega-mansions, expensive cars, jewelry, etc., do not create long-term happiness. It is also the reason why events in your life that make you unhappy, such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, and failure, do not create long-term unhappiness. Eventually everyone reverts back to their genetic happiness baseline. Since only 10% of happiness is circumstance-based, pursuing wealth, as an end to itself, will only increase happiness incrementally. The only true way to increase long-term happiness is clearly to engage in activities that produce happiness. Thanks to my 10 years of research on habits, I've uncovered what those activities are. All you need is one or two to increase your happiness baseline. Let's go: How to Create Happiness 1. Manage Expectations All too often we look at life with rose-colored glasses. While optimism is critical to success, the biggest cause of unhappiness is not meeting expectations we set for ourselves. What we need, when we pursue a big goal, a dream, or our main purpose in life, is a dose of reality. When pursuing a big goal you need to break that journey down into manageable tasks that are 100% achievable. This guarantees that you will meet expectations and avoid unhappiness. It also sets you up to surprise yourself by exceeding your expectations, thus creating happiness. 2. Overcome One Fear Overcoming fear alters your thinking. It will reprogram your mind from negative to positive. It will increase your level of confidence. Doing something that scares you will take you out of your comfort zone and make you anxious and nervous. It will also exhilarate you. Human beings were not intended to be slaves to our fears. Our core fears reside in the limbic system portion of our brains. The neocortex, the most recent evolutionary portion of our brain, has the ability to consciously overcome our fears. When you take on a fear, both parts of the brain begin to compete against each other. The neocortex is far superior in terms of size. It has billions more neurons than the limbic system. It can easily overcome any fear. Become the master of fear and not its slave and you will experience happiness. 3. Exercise Daily Exercising is a Happiness Habit. While the activity itself is not a happiness event, when completed, it creates a feeling of overall happiness. We feel happy because we've done something that is good for our body. The more you exercise, the happier you will be. 4. Learn Every Day Believe it or not, learning something new will make you happier. When we learn something new, the brain creates new neural synapses (connections), and this neural stimulation creates a physiological feeling of self-satisfaction and increased confidence. We simply feel better about ourselves. This is not an accident. These physiological feelings of happiness are the brain's way of rewarding us for engaging in good brain behavior. The brain's secondary purpose (the first being to keep us alive) is to learn. When we learn new things, we actually increase the mass of our brain (new neurons = new mass). The brain is one of the very few internal organs whose mass increases by use. The more we engage in learning, the more the brain will reward us with feelings of happiness. Each time you learn something new, therefore, you are creating a happiness event. Devote 20-30 minutes each day, reading something that will help you on the job or increase your knowledge in some hobby or passion you might have. Learn and be happy. 5. Associate With Happy People Birds of a feather flock together. If you want to be happier you need to associate with other happy people. You need to spend a minimum of one hour a week with other happy people. You also need to reduce the time you spend with unhappy people to less than one hour per week. When you make new acquaintances with other happy people, they will, in time, introduce you to their relationships, who also happen to be other happy people. The more happy people you associate with in life, the happier you will be. 6. Set One Big Goal Pursuing a goal creates happiness. Research shows that we are genetically engineered to be goal-oriented. When we pursue a new goal we activate existing neurons or create new neural connections (synapses). New dentrites and synapses form inside the brain when we pursue a goal. The brain likes this and releases certain neurochemicals that create a feeling of pleasure or happiness as we learn new things in pursuit of our goal. Every time you learn something new in pursuit of your goal you trigger a happiness event. This physiology is why those who pursue goals consider the pursuit more gratifying than the actual realization of the goal. 7. Pursue Your Main Purpose Most people are not following their own main purpose in life. They are following someone else's. It may be a main purpose of a mother, father, spouse, or some other significant presence in their life. When you are not following your main purpose, you are not happy. You do not look forward to Monday's or any other work day. You see life as drudgery and anxiously await the weekends, holidays and vacation time. You pursue post-work activities that are often unhealthy, such as excessive alcohol consumption. You are often mired in negative, depressed thoughts. That's not what life intended for you. Life intended that each of us pursue our own individual main purpose. Doing so awakens our inner genius and stimulates the creative parts of our brain that make humans so unique. You will not be happy and successful in life pursuing someone else's agenda. You need to pursue your own agenda; you need to follow your own individual main purpose in life. |

The graph of life is never straight and steep as many human beings would prefer it to be. There are the straight parts, the curves and then the twists. Economies also behave in similar fashion. We call the growth period economic prosperity. When it contracts, we say there is recession. So, recession is not only a regular occurrence in economies; it is also a universal phenomenon. It occurs in different places at different times. This means that both developed and developing countries often take their turns on depression or recession. Oftentimes, countries are already out of depression before statistics confirm that they had even suffered one. That’s when it is a short spell of recession. The National Bureau of Economic Research (United States) actually defines a recession as “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than two quarters which is six months, normally visible in real gross domestic product, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales”. You may not be a student of economics but chances are that you have heard about the Great Depression. What make the Great Depression stand out are its endurance and its geographic spread. It is one of the longest depressions in history, lasting for a period of three years and eight months While the Great Depression originated in the United States, it spread to many countries of the world. What really caused the Great Depression? Economists are not agreed. While some opine that the sudden collapse of the stock market was responsible, others said the collapse was only a symptom of the malaise. However, what is clear was that on October 29, 1929, the Black Tuesday, the United States Stock Market crashed. From then, many economies around the world struggled for the next three to four years; some even till the late 1930s. Some countries lost as much as 15 per cent of their Gross Domestic Products. Wikipedia noted, “By mid-1930, interest rates had dropped to low levels, but expected deflation and the continuing reluctance of people to borrow meant that consumer spending and investment were depressed. By May 1930, automobile sales had declined to below the levels of 1928. “Prices in general began to decline, although wages held steady in 1930. Then a deflationary spiral started in 1931. Conditions were worse in farming areas, where commodity prices plunged and in mining and logging areas, where unemployment was high and there were few other jobs. “The decline in the U.S. economy was the factor that pulled down most other countries at first; then, internal weaknesses or strengths in each country made conditions worse or better. “Frantic attempts to shore up the economies of individual nations through protectionist policies, such as the 1930 U.S. Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act and retaliatory tariffs in other countries, exacerbated the collapse in global trade. By late 1930, a steady decline in the world economy had set in, which did not reach bottom until 1933.” One skill required of leaders during a period of depression is communication and the capacity to sell hope. This is because recession is often triggered or exacerbated by loss of hope and confidence in the economy. One of the best known American businessmen, John D. Rockefeller, for instance, said after the crash of Wall Street, “These are days when many are discouraged. In the 93 years of my life, depressions have come and gone. Prosperity has always returned and will again.” However, communication was not one of the best skills of the then self-effacing President of the United States, Herbert Hoover. Writing in the Prologue Magazine, Richard Norton Smith and Timothy Walch said, “Usually cast as a president defined by his failure to contain the Great Depression, Hoover’s story is far more complex and more interesting. “Hoover was an activist reformer, albeit one without the political skills needed to sell himself and his programmes to Congress and the public. “A shy man, he insisted on keeping much of his life and good deeds out of the public eye. Only in politics is this a character flaw, yet it prevented those around Hoover from portraying him as a compassionate leader, or warding off portrayals of him as a cold, uncaring figure responsible for nearly everything that was going wrong in the American economy.” The day of reckoning came for Hoover when he lost the 1932 presidential election to Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a landslide. Roosevelt knew a strategy that Hoover did not. He talked the United States out of recession. He started a series of radio evening programme. The programme that has been captured as Fireside Chat addressed several problems of the economy and the president was able to give hope, confidence and strategy to the people. This enabled the nation to overcome the Great Depression. Argentina suffered its own Great Depression between 1998 and 2002. “The depression, which began due to the Russian and Brazilian financial crises, caused widespread unemployment, riots, the fall of the government, a default on the country’s foreign debt, the rise of alternative currencies and the end of the peso’s fixed exchange rate to the US dollar. “The economy shrank by 28 per cent from 1998 to 2002. In terms of income, over 50 per cent of Argentines were poor and 25 per cent, indigent; seven out of 10 Argentine children were poor at the depth of the crisis in 2002. “By the first half of 2003, however, GDP growth had returned, surprising economists and the business media, and the economy grew by an average of nine per cent for five years,” Wikipedia noted. Through debt restructuring, the country was able to come out of its debt crises. Although most debts owed multilateral agencies had been settled by 2006, bond holders had to exercise patience with the country until April 2016 when it cleared the payment of the bonds. One of the most recent and sensational recessions in the world is Greece’s. The recession in Greece was triggered by debt crisis and loss of confidence in the European nation. On June 30, 2015, Greece went down as the first European country in modern times that defaulted on paying its creditors. Greece failed to pay the sum of $1.5bn to the International Monetary Fund when it was due. The Guardian of the United Kingdom reported that the long-running debt debacle left Greece on the brink of financial collapse, worsening recent years of wrenching austerity. This represented a historic blow to Europe’s 16-year old single currency. Some of the drivers that exacerbated the problem of Greece were budget and trade deficits. Both trade and budget deficit grew from below five per cent of Gross Domestic Product by 1999 to about 15 per cent of GDP by 2009. The immediate factor that had triggered the Greek debt crisis was the realisation in 2009 that the debt figure had been deceptive. The implication of this was that statistics coming out of the country could not be reliable as the debt level had been underestimated. This crisis of confidence eroded the capacity of the Greece government to borrow new funds. As the risk increased by the perception of investors and lenders, the cost of borrowing increased in the country. In the final analysis, the country required a bailout.. Writing in the New York Times on July 9, 2015, Liz Alderman, Larry Buchanan, Eduardo Porter and Karl Russell painted the picture of Greece. They wrote, “The economy has been in disarray. People have been out of work for years. The banks have been running out of money. It sounds a lot like the Great Depression in the United States. But it is Greece – and in some ways, the situation is worse. “Government spending helped pull the United States out of the Great Depression starting in 1933, and decoupling the dollar from gold helped. Though the economy slipped back into recession in 1937, the onset of World War II and furious military spending helped the country recover for good. “Greece hasn’t had its own currency since it joined the euro, and an inefficient bureaucracy has long failed to improve tax collection or to trim its bloated government. At this point, Greece is just struggling to pay its bills, as it tries to secure aid from Europe.” For Greece, diplomacy mattered so much at the period of recession. This worked. European authorities knew the implications of allowing the country to fail. The implications were going to be disastrous to the economic bloc. By debt rescheduling and fresh loans, Europe is helping one of its own to glide through the difficult times. By January 2016, a fresh package of $3.4bn was agreed for the nation by European authorities. The earlier the Nigerian policymakers learn from such experiences and devise the best strategies to deal with the present hard times, the better for the nation’s future. Copyright PUNCH |
I am worried and concerned for my country and her people, instead of us all to create forums to offer solutions and remedies, we are busy wasting good brain power on criticism and condemned condemnation. I Abuezefemi humbly opened this small thread as a place for us all as a people to offer only solutions, suggestions and remedy to this economic issue. Thanks all |

He said his party identified only three major items…Security, Economy and Corruption. Speaking on Monday when he hosted state house correspondents at the presidential villa in Abuja, Buhari said he and his cabinet members have been doing their best to deliver the change which the All Progressives Congress (APC) promised Nigerians during the electioneering campaign. The president described his ministers as hardworking, saying they toil day and night to ensure that his administration succeeds. “One of the men I pity is Lai Mohammed. Everyday he is on TV explaining our performance or lack of it,” he said. “The ministers sit down day and night to work. Some of them have literarily lost weight because they were sleeping less and eating less (while working on the budget). They were working on every kobo to be spent. “We recently just found out that we are poor because we don’t have anything to fall back to. This is the condition we found ourselves and this change mantra had to go through hell up till yesterday. “And for you to talk to whoever came to visit us throughout that year, I wonder how each of your diaries would be, because people were expecting this change mantra in their own way. “How do you define change? Luckily our party identified three major items, security, economy and corruption.” The president spoke on why he reduced the number of ministries from 42 to 24. He also revealed that some of the permanent secretaries were disengaged because of lack of commitment. Buhari added that there is a possibility of the economy recovering in the last quarter of the year. “When we came there were 42 ministries we cut it to 24. We had to do it on our own because we found out that government could not continue with 42 ministers and the paraphernalia of office so we cut it down to 24,” he said. “I underrated the influence of the PDP for 16 years watching from outside. The experience of the staff, their commitment and zeal is different from what it is now compared to when I was in government. Sixteen years of development in the life of a developing nation is a long time. “Most of the permanent secretaries were sent out because it was time for some of them to go and for others for one thing or the other. Because were not part of those 16 years this is where we found ourselves and this is no joke. “We had to cut down half the number of permanent secretaries and then do some cross postings. The permanent secretaries that were there for the past five, seven, 15 years the only thing that they know is how things were done in the previous years. Whatever we did in the campaign, in fact we were saying rubbish and that made it very difficult for us. “Things were even more difficult during the budget which you all know about. For somebody like me, for the first time I heard what is called padding. “I think we will recover by the fourth quarter of the year, what padding means especially for ministers who had implement what padding contains. There were very serious developments which I never knew about.” Cableng Tags: All Progressives CongressLai MohammedPresident Muhammadu Buhari Share 34 Tweet Share 0 Share 0 Share 0 I Pity Lai Mohammed, He Keeps Defending Our Failed Promises - Buhari Previous Blood, Sorrows and Tears as Army Uses Live Bullets on Protesters I Pity Lai Mohammed, He Keeps Defending Our Failed Promises - Buhari Next Niger Delta Group Claims Responsibility for Onitsha Attack, 8 Soldiers Killed ABOUT THE AUTHOR Breaking Times Welcome to Breaking Times, a global online newspaper for synthesizing news down to easy-to-read-and-comprehend stories.
