Efficiency is a paramount consideration in energy generation and utilisation.
We often worry more about generating energy than we do about efficiently utilising it,
It shouldn’t end with worrying about generating the energy, efficient use is also very important, infact just as important.

If I generate 1000w and utilise it at an efficiency of 60% while Mr B generates 700W but utilizes this at an efficiency of 85%; even though the later has a capacity that is 30% smaller, we will realize about the same amount of productivity or use.
When you finally decide on a setup put the following in mind:

Have an energy efficient consumption habit.

Install energy efficient lighting systems,
LED lamps- 35% more efficient than CFLS(spiral energy saving bulbs) and 85% more efficient than Incandescent lamps. I’m sure Mr Dunka can tesify to the benefit LED utilization, I can attest to his penchant for efficient lighting grin

Buy energy efficient appliances
Air Conditioning systems for instance account for one of the largest energy consumption in domestic setups. So even the slightest amount of efficiency improvement with them will result in reasonable energy conservation. When you buy Appliances generally, check for an Energy Star Label.
For ACs lookout for models with High Energy Efficiency Rating (EER). The EER indicates the relative amount of energy required to produce a specific cooling output, check the energy star site and research ratings on brands and models.
The link below shows the Energy Star 2016 list of the most energy efficient Central AC systems (brands and Models), with information on EER, Annual Energy Use, estimated Lifetime Operation Cost etc.

https://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=most_efficient.me_cac_ashp

you're simply the best.
I have no reason not to patronise you.
because I am sure of what I am buying.
you know what Ure selling.
sir, Pls keep up your attitude.
God bless you.

My major concern is the batteries.
I had an inverter some years back but the battery did not last that much long.
I guess sit has to do with my over-draining it as l do use it till "it runs out of juice".

Having learnt from others, l have a bigger setup now that is doing better but at the back of my mind, l still worry about the batteries.

Can you confirm that your batteries have used up to six years (the same set of batteries from inception) or did you have to change one or two among the set?
What make of batteries?

Thanks,

Lastpage!

Edited: just realised it was a post from another user.
But do you have a Solar setup yourself?
Permit me to answer on behalf of George and dunka.
George has been the inspiration behind most of us.
yes dunka owns a set up. in terms of cost, I think his set up is even more expensive than mine.
I am aware George has been using his batteries since 2013 or even earlier and as at last week when we discussed he confirmed that the batteries are still working as new.
my batteries have been working since June 2014. I want to tell you that, I have been enjoying every moment with them.
as you mentioned earlier, draining Batteries to zero kills them in their prime.
kindly breeze tru the fta solar thread, I bet you will have more reasons to consider solar in your builds.

as for me, I hope to make my solar array 4000 watts by the time I complete my build. I intend to use it to construct a car park. due to scarcity of funds, Ill be using wood instead of galvanised steel to fabricate the legs/supports.

I have invested a lot in the journey into energy freedom. I currently enjoy 24hrs uninterrupted power supply in my house. you will be surprised that I use only maximum of 2 fans , 1tv, decoder and about 8 bulbs(7w led). occasionally pump water 1hp, I iron my clothes on demand (only when going out).
when out of gas, we cook with it till we buy gas the following day.
these are the reasons why I am sure if I get d proper materials, home automation will be very easy for me.
I need ideas especially now that the house is still under construction.

congrats for your going solar, 16 units of 6v 430ah trojan battery??!!. omo no be beans.
errrrm, i dont know how you would take this, but i think you shud pay more attention to ur wiring/setup.
spend a lil more and make your cabling neater, the other pic u posted of ur 16 trojan batts, was really really uncool, wires going here n there, n then this ur sitting rm/tv setup, a lil trunking and flat panels/wood would give the setup a more aesthetic look.
pls i beg you, dont replicate same in your new house

thanks dunka, you spoke my mind.
all you see from the wooden solar stand down to even the television are a temporary.
seriously working on my permanent site and by the grace of God we shall see less wires. I am even eyeing home automation.
my electrical conduit piping has even taken care of home theatre speakers.
oh yes, I must not replicate this at the permanent site. thanks for the brotherly love.

Solar pays in the long run.
Home owners and prospective home owners should consider solar.
Here's my system. I still reside in a rented apartment which has limitations.
By the time I move to my place.
I have a special dedicated power room for my power gadgets.
16 batteries (6v 225ah flooded)
5kva inverter
96amps mppt charge controller
Surge protection.
3000w solar panels ( to be upgraded to 4kw on reaching my permanent site).

With all these, home automation can be a possibility.

Alhaji Saipro, how u dey sir.

we both have been enjoying our systems. I am enjoying my 3kw poly system. wish I had discovered this earlier.
I must confess, 70% or 80% hmm even 150% efficiency doesn't matter again.
all I see now is 1pm 59v absorption and 3pm float.
what's else do I need.
When last did I crack my head to do energy calculations.. Except for a prospective clients.
Currently enjoying Game of thrones season 6.
it's 7.30pm here in Ilorin.

You're very correct sir. I was able to follow up with the Aluminum order.
I had every detail of 0.55 guuage step tile produced.
After roofing was done, only one full sheet of 6m and 2 pcs of 1m was left.
My nature of job availed me the opportunity of getting volunteers who kept every record for me.
So I give the Aluminum guys a 98% accuracy. It would have been a problem if we had to buy more.
We had most materials in excess but the gap is just less than 10meters including all cladding, I gutters etc.

Ask an independent person to evaluate the roof from the plan, it shouldn't be up to evaluate 385m2.

Hian, what is your own in the matter, the guy that spent the money said he spent 4.5millon naira, why are you doubting him?....cost of building in Nigeria has increased with the current recession, secondly, several factors come to play in building like the kind of foundation, location of the property, the kind of soil texture, the materials involved, direct supervision or given to a contractor and the finishing, dont let me even go to what l spent in my rental buildings, meanwhile how is your building?....have you corrected the pliers or not undecided
Thanks for your apt response.
I was even lucky to have learnt a lot here, I if not I would have spent far more to achieve this.
Cleared the land 100by100.
Dug a well
Dug and built a septic tank( soak away)
Built a 16 or 17 course water and tank
And ofkos the house it self
Burglaries
Turkish doors.....
It's God.
Once again thanks to Abdulwastecx and Kolashangone for opening my eyes.

If I'm to include cost of the land that's extra 1.2m.

The entrance door installed in June 2016. Electrical works also done same time.
I also want to acknowledge Kolashangone for his counsel when I wanted to buy Aluminium Roof.
I settled down for sumo oven baked 0.55 steptiles at 1950 per metre then (Ilorin price). Was slightly cheaper in Lagos but the risk ain't worth it.
Kolashangone made me realise the difference in types of aluminium.
The trick was simple, I surveyed different houses in the hood and met the owners to tell me what they love to do differently as regards alum roof.
I got samples of the good and not so good. I eventually went for the best in my category.
I want sincerely appreciate all contributors to this thread for sharing their private lives for others to learn.
It's my turn to reciprocate.

If you observe closely, every thing in the house was done according to design except the roof.
Even the water tank was erected as planned.

Pls take note: in case you discover any error, I Abdulwastecx is not responsible for that as he never visited the site in person. He passed instructions to me and I inturn pass it access to the bricklayers.

Reading from various threads on the property section equipped me to be able to Interprete abdwastecx to best of my ability.

I was waiting for a time when this thread will be cleared of all types e~quarrel so that I can post to inspire others.

Edit: the Burglary in the entrance was also not part of the design, we are anticipating that we may not have a fence by the time the house is occupied.

Next stage is plumbing.
Since I am also an electrical person, I I have done all the electrical conduit piping.
I intend to power my home with 100% solar.

Hajji might have forgotten, I once consulted him a long time ago, I never knew he wasn't based in Naija.

iLoveTheSun,
the bolded couldn't be more true. and, personally, that was the motivation behind my solar initiative from day one.
i always thought to myself, "if i can spend 3 million and above to buy a car that takes me from point a to point b
and on a good day i only get to spend at most 1 hour, two hours or even three hours in that car, why then shouldn't
i spend an equivalent amount to make my home comfortable to live in? a house i spend over eight to twelve hours
in everyday?" for me, it just didn't make sense riding a car fitted with ac and being comfortable for one hour only to
arrive home, park that same car and you enter into a house with no lights, no fan, waiting for when phcn will restore
public power or on the alternative going to struggle with a fuel guzzling generator when you could have all this with
the flick of a switch.
so, suddenly solar began to make more sense to me, regardless of the amount i was spending to put those 40 panels
on my roof.

I share the Same view as George D, he actually inspired many of us into towing the renewable energy line.
It's been a long time since I depended on NEPA for my energy need.
I have a 3kw solar array.
4kw Voltron inverter.
Midniteclassic 150 mppt.
48v 450ah Trojan battery bank
Midnite surge protection and etc.

By the grace of God, I am hitting 5kw by the end of 2016.

Kiekie1 is there to run the package.
Sorry for d dissapointment. Better safe than sorry bro.

so, revisiting that same calculation above and being careful to leave every other parameter intact, it would look like this:

30ltrs in 1 wk is roughly 10 litres/day.
1month = 300litrs
at the present pump price of 145naira/ltr (up from 65 naira per litre), it becomes: 300*145= 43,500 naira (instead of 19,500 naira) spent for fuel alone in a month.
and in a year that amounts to: 43,500*12 = 522,000 naira

and of course if the fuel pump price can increase by about 123% in just six years, we can only just imagine what the next 25yrs will
look like.

bottom line: there is never a wrong time to go solar!

glad to have u back again sir.

I've always had an mppt on my mind... I started using solar panels just four months ago and my batteries clocked 2 years plus as at June this year. So gradually am stepping up. I'll definitely give my testimony when my mppt finally arrives. But 1st I'm trusting God that my next upgrade will be getting a 3.5kva inverter. I only turn on my generator when I want to pump water to my overhead tank. Renewable Energy is a sure way of investing and cutting cost on power generation.
