I don't do the Indian brands. So I am not familiar with them and can't give a qualified opinion. The reason why they list cycle uses on batteries is so that you know the maximum and minimum voltage you can charge the batteries to. When they are not charged properly sulfation occurs and there is no particular manner in which it occurs. Differences in tightness of your lug, distance of battery to the charge source, imperfections in the battery can be the reason why one fails before the other.

I attended a class over the weekend and the instructor told us that you can equalize your sealed batteries. Give that a try and see if it will bring it back. At 12 Volts your battery is flat. It is beyond flat at 11 volts. You might want to set the alarm for 11.5 Volts.

Run the equalization and get a desulfator. The instructor swore by them. If the batteries are not too far gone you might be able to rescue them with the suggestion that I made.
woow. we keep learning every day. Valuable contribution from u sir.

Accept my sympathies.
1. How did you size the battery bank?
2. What size chargers do the inverters have?
3. Salam12 has asked the other questions that are relevant.
Lead acid batteries don't like being completely discharged. The sealed batteries need to see 28.5 to 29 V (on 24V) daily during the charge routine. With a small charger and a depleted battery bank you batteries will not see that.
Thank sir@ chris81964. The inverters in question are the popular indian brands we all know. The battery used are 200ah of the same indian brand name.
Yes most of these clients deplete their bank up to 100% dod. The issue now is most of the inverters have battery low voltage alarm usually at 11.0V and wt this level of discharge a significant number cycle life is lost. How come its only one battery that suffers this ill fate?

most installers are faced with same problem. let's discuss
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by abunafiu(m): 4:58pm On Nov 23, 2015
salam12:

Please check if any of the mentioned inverters have setting for DOD. If this important safety control is not there, most times the batteries must have been pulled down to 100% DOD which will be more injurious to battery life. Also, most of these inverters must have come with 10 to 20A charging capacity which will be too small to deliver needed power to pull back the batteries fully from nearly zero SOC.
I doubt if there's any indian 1.5kva 24 inverter with DOD settings.
Thanks for ur input sir @salam12.

I would like to throw this issue up for discussion. I installed a number of 1.5kva 24v inverters(safepower, luminous, genius , sukham etc). After 10 months thereabout, the clients notified me of reduced number of hours of backup. Preliminary checkes revealed a failing battery and in most cases, the most negative battery. The same happens with INDIAN 48v inverters too. Lets discuss the possible causes and solution. My integrity has been badly affected as a result because I promised most of them 2yrs of useful battery life. The most annoying part is most clients are my senior colleagues at work...u all know what it means.

I usually stay away from making this kind of comments am about to but for this one i really feel like i should.

In economics of Engineering, we were thought to make the best use of what the client has on ground already.
You should avoid making changes according to equipment you feel are not pro, rather you should base your design on what the need of the client is. In this case you didn't tell us what the need of your client is. Your planning to sale off the solar panels any replacing it with an expensive inverter doesn't make sense to me except i didn't understand you well. With that system and your recent upgrade to FM80, I want to believe if the installation is properly carried out (with proper cable sizing/quality, proper terminals etc) that the system should be very effective with relative to the size.

What will your client gain buy buying an inverter with almost half a million naira when he doesn't even have batteries? What advantage will he get by buying PRAG over luminous?

In my advice, power generation is always priority to storage. As such, the solar panels which you even want to sale off is more important than the inverter and batteries except the present batteries are bad.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sukam inverter if you depend more on solar for charging the battery. Depending on inverter for charging the battery doesn't make economic sense to me except the person is not paying bills for power.

Finally, we always advice client to upgrade only on certain conditions like;
- If he has grown financially over time and wants to move to pro products
- If he has moved to a bigger apartment and can afford the upgrade
- If the system he had installed was wrongly designed and wasn't operational for at least 60% rated efficiency
- If the previous system failed and he could afford something better
- If we are called and asked to upgrade.

The upgrade must make economic sense and improved efficiency before we get involved.

Please pardon me if this is not what you expected
You are absolutely correct sir.
Besides , one may not get back the expected amount of money after sales.
Pharyn, you need to encourage ur cleint to add more panels. and later he can systematically change the inverter and lastly the batteries.

I still await ur reply on the soc of those batts @pharyn

Thanks bro, but how will this timer help in the scenario i painted earlier?
There are times, during cloudy days that the battery state of charge is low. If the water pump comes on, it'll drain the battery and trip the inverter at low battery cutoff. If i had a voltage controlled switch instead of a timer, set it, the pump would never come on as long as the battery voltage is low and there's no utility power from the grid. I'd achieve better control...

So whether during the day or at night, i want my auxiliary loads disconnected when the battery voltage drops below a certain value, and reconnect them when the battery voltage climbs (by solar or grid supply) above another value.

If kiekie has such a switch, abeg hola!
juo once told me he has voltage control switch. contact him sir.

I can confirm i have noticed a lesser voltage at cutout on all the batteries on the NEGATIVE end of my systems. I thought at that time that maybe the NEGATIVE terminal cable being a bit longer was the problem! Periodical swaprounds highly recommended.
periodic swapping is highly recommended. the most negative battery usually takes the fall.
I do periodic swapping for systems above 12v.
To counter this phenomena, I recommend an upgrade to flooded batteries such that u can perform equalisation.

I stand to be corrected: most indian inverters (24v and above)damage batts..usually the most negative. I am speaking from experience. They are equipped with poor chargers. I have tried inverters like prag and mustpower. ...they charge well and equal voltage is observed on all batts unlike sukham etc.
However, when it comes to fault tolerance, I give it to the Indian inverters.

my oga easy o. Your boy remain loyal. Just an advise for those that don't know, high voltage will damage your cc
Oga juo... don't mind me. I felt the need to let people know that 3 by 3 is not harmful to mppt controller.
To be honest, if u refer to the manual that came with the TSMPPT60 ..3 by 3 is discouraged. Sometimes in 2013., my self, GeorgeD1 and some other guys discussed this extensively. After practicals , we concluded 3 by 3 was the best for 48v systems.
When I tried the same for 24v, I discovered I was loosing power but my cc worked fine for almost a month when I 4kw inverter was away. I use only 1080watts in total.

As u rightly pointed. high voc will fry pwm easily. voc above 150v is strongly discouraged for mppt cc.

Happy sunday bro!.

But you were scared to use 4x4 even when your cc is 150v input? Have you by any means checked the device temperature at 90v and above at noon? I believe you will be scared of 4x4 by the time you see the result. I think you know the result of an engine performing at a high RMP all the time?
Yes. I will definitely be scared of usimg 4 by 4. At 3 by 3 typical total Voc is usually between 115 and 130v for every 24v panel.
My TSMPPT60 can handle max 150v. which means 130v is safe enough. However, 4 by 4 will result to 145 to 160V voc and that's when d problem will start.
Always consider the name plate values on ur panels with respect to your cc b4 connection.
With my 3 by 3 connection. My cc has never gone beyond 45°C . My cc has high temperature protection as well as high voltage disconnect.

Surge protection is highly recommended.

voltage usually hovers around 130v. This is high, you suffered the cc to handle the voltage for 21 months. To make matters worse you were off grid, no resting time for the cc. Sorry for your loss but I think alaba boys can fix it. Always leave breathing space for anything be automobile or electronics next time. 2x2 would have been better

I don't think his panels arrangement is responsible for the fault. To the best of my knowledge, mppt controllers have dc to dc converters that's controlled by some programme( firmware) for best performance.
It's simple, lightening struck his cc and affected some components on board. Over time, we have been advised to use surge arrestors. I am still saving for one though, except if solardepotng.com is kind enough to throw one at me as independence gift.

Alaba boys are good. You may give them a try.

Hello Abunafiu, I am new to this forum and have been watching from the sidelines. I would like to know your total installed panel capacity in KWp? Thanks
my total pv strength is 9 units of 120w mono joysolar. total 1080watts. Though I have 10 units of them. But I used only 9 to achieve 3 by 3 config because I use trojan batteries Which needs occasional equalisation. I use a 60amps morning star mppt controller. My inverter is a 4k mustpower inverter which charges with a maximum charge current of 41amps. I purchased the inverter Dec 2014. so far so good. The inverter is very good and affordable. Repairs incase of fault is now very easy. And incase of irreparable damage, the power board is available with solardepotng.com . I saw a box containing quite a number of boards during my last visit.

@tundebabzy, I can only share u pictures of snap shot of the controllers display. There is nothing else to.prove my claim of energy harvest. I'll send it 2 u on whatsapp.

I like your philosophy and your approach.

I'm building my house from scratch as a solar powered entity. The electrical cables will be specific for low voltage efficiency.

The west and east facing sides of my roof will offer a solar array to the sun and charge a bank of solar batteries (that'll be the money pit).

I'll have a small I generator to maintain the batteries during low sun periods. Nothing kills these batteries more than that.

I'll have passive roof turbines to excavate any residual hear trapped in the ceilings. There will also be at least one or two (still studying the efficiency) while house fans.

With careful tree planting by windows and the fact that I have a gaping hole of a 500 square foot central courtyard I think I'll be able to keep the house sufficiently cool with just fans.

My plan was chosen specifically because it was originally built for Mexico which has similar weather system like nigeria.

The only issue now is the blocks which is different from the 2x6 wood that that external walls were designed for.

Interestingly enough I've been told that the design of the hollow blocks acts like insulators of sorts.

Good stuff.

I would love to hear and learn more sir.

True and not true. On the dc end it is strictly KW but we don't use DC conventionally so KVA is appropriate as inverters can be rated in kva by multiplying the power (kw) of the inverter by the power factor of the inverter.

Thank you

You're on point.

I have a problem with those saying that they don't need solar now that power is constant.

Let me assure you that if you are paying for every KWH of electrical energy you consume. You will quickly consider the cheaper alternative which is solar.

Did you care to know why advanced countries such as Germany, US etc are the front runners in solar despite their massive amount of MW they generate to their national grid.

Many of us are energy thiefs. very soon PHCN or what are they will install your meters outside your building and then there will be no short path to stealing energy. by d end of d Month u consume 500Kwh . u will pay 500×16.11=8055 + 625= 9000 approximately. Not even 500Kwh is 500 units. 625 is monthly fixed charge.

Assuming u use 42 inch lcd with 2 fans and a medium sized fridge for 10hrs daily. u would av consumed 120+ 80+80+ 200 = 480 watts = 10× 480= 4800wh or 4.8kwh. in 30 days it is 4.8×30=144kwh per month
u will pay 144×16.11+ 625= 2944.84.

But with solar u can power this with a 2kw inverter , 40 amps controller, 4 units of 200ah battery(incase it rains for an extra day) and 2000w panels for better results . You will spend approx 800k for this and enjoy more than 10hrs power daily for not less than 2yrs(battery life span depending on quality). the panels will last for over 25yrs.
if u do d maths. 3000 × 24 months is 720k. so in 2 yrs u would've paid for d solar power system.
with less than 300k u can replace the batteries and enjoy it for another 2 yrs as d case may be.
in d long run solar ia cheaper. very relaible. u av no business with the utility company.

obeenah and geesampower. ...u can take it from here. pls pardon my typo
