Hello house,

Please i am trying to install a solar panel system for my parents, can you recommend a good solar installer in Ilorin?

Secondly, I want to ask if anyone can help with the schematic drawing for hybrid inverter connection. I am not an expert but I try to read up, and from my readings, it seems that the connection of solar hybrid inverter is different from the normal solar-inverter connection.

Thirdly, I assume I don't need a charge controller if I am using a hybrid inverter...please help clarify.

Lastly, what is the recommended cable size and type for connection from the panels to the inverter....this is so that if I don't get a recommended installer, I can at least monitor the one I can manage to get to ensure a good connection.

Thanks house.

Apologies... Just seeing this. Been away from this section for a long time now.

did they just die suddenly, or a gradual reduction in storage?. did you try draining all the electrolyte, flushing the internals with clean water, refilling with good electrolyte and charge??

yeah solar biz in naija is not that profitable, with 10 to 20% markup in prices, having to replace just 1 battery will wipe out all your profit, if care is not taken. and battery waranty is an iffy issue... cos the user may have abused it knowingly or out of ignorance, and blame you if it fails .you may consider listing out the equipment and let the client go buy them himself, and you charge a flat fee for installation
that's been my new approach sir.

Been on sabbatical.
still on sabbatical.
Just to greet my beloved.
Trust you are good.
I have almost 300 pages unread.
I saw the FLA batteries debate .. Mine finally dropped dead in Jan 2019. that's 4.5 years of active service and wahala.
I'm not sure I can afford a 48v 450ah bank anymore. Bukata at home don increase in recent times. We go manage my planned 48v 200ah with my excessive 4kw PV array.

Battery issues with clients especially my colleagues at work has really crippled my biz. Faced the worst one when I was reported to the CEO. Had to refund and the seller refused to honor warranty. Me can't even trust any battery again. If the so called made in the US can die premature... Abeg.

Good afternoon wonderful people.

Good morning house,

Please which of this product is best for a 48V system (Total Voc of 132v)

1) Midnite Solar Classic 150 Charge Controller 150VDC Input MPPT
2) OutBack Power FM60-150VDC FLEXMax 60 Charge Controller
3) MORNINGSTAR TS-MPPT-60

Any other suggestion welcomed....Once bitten....!!!!. Prices are welcomed as well.

Classic 150 Sir. Occasional hype do occurs in voc. Your expected 132voc may flash [MAKAVIELI vs dam5] above 132 tending towards 150v and over. The classic I designed to enter safe mode called hyperVoc and returns to normal after your voc drops to safe range below 150.
Other controllers don't have that safety feature.

Practically [remembering Mr Makinde or so, the practical man ], I have tried a series of 4 units of 200w mono panels. Between the hours of 9am to 11am, the classic was in hyperVoc mode almost tru out this period until when the sun began to heat the panels and voc dropped to 140 something volts. I did this just to see how the hyperVoc function operates.
I did the same with 4 units of 250w Poly panels and it works fine. This made it possible for me to ignore the long distance cabling in my house since I could minimise losses associated.
I currently operate this series arrangement and the result is superb, energy harvest begins as early as possible and ends very late too. The extra voc did the magic.

Other mppts doesn't have that feature. But if morningstar mppt can give me a 80 amps version of their tristar model, I will prefer it. Cool running unlike the outback and classic whose fan make occasional horrible noise which might make u think something terrible is about to happen.

I just realised I have been off grid for almost 18 months.

My Trojan T105 are still giving me the desired result. But I ensure I never drain below 47.5V.
I am not sure I am ready to find out the consequences of doing so. Since the batteries respect me, I equally respect them by ensuring NO DEEP DISCHARGE and regular equalisation charge.
I maintained an float voltage of 56v which Is to ensure I have full battery for as long as I have quality Sun. I am aware of the effect on watering but that's the only way I get the best from them. Myself and Saipro discovered this method and has been working for us.

My Trojans are now 3.5 years old. Purchased June 2014.

I pray the price of batteries drop. I am not sure I can afford replacing my battery bank with the current prices.

I have been using the BLS 12/24v desulfator since 2011 - the advertised method of operation is some sort of radio frequency signal sent into the batteries to break up sulfur crystals - I doubt if it is the cause of the issues with your inverter - the kind of desulfator myself and Saipro were talking about were the electronic pulsers/desulfators which send out very brief high voltage jolts into the battery to break up the sulfur crystals.

The issue with your inverter seems more like something on the load side or an issue with the inverter board or some sensor on the board.

Have you considered that you might actually have an intermittent shorted wire or similar issue in your house making the inverter sense high load sometimes? One easy way to isolate this issue is to install a 10amp AC breaker e.g ABB or other good brand on the AC live/positive side of the inverter output - I am assuming here that your actual loads never exceed 2.4kw or 10amps at 240volts AC - if that breaker ever trips where your real load based on equipment you are running is under 2.4kw and allowing for surge current, then you definitely have a shorted wire issue or there is some load coming on somewhere in the house that you are not aware of e.g iron or microwave or heater inadvertently plugged to one of the power sockets the inverter is powering.

In any case, with the breaker attached, you have effectively set a load limit on your inverter - a 3 to 4kw load should trip a 10amps breaker, a bridged wire/short circuit scenario will definitely trip the breaker - with this you can easily eliminate/confirm the inverter as the root cause of the issue.

Seconded.

i have a 4kva 48v muspower inverter with a desulphator hooked to it. the fan only runs when the temp hits 64deg, and sometimes when desulphating.
yeah, it doesnt like being charged by then, probablly cause of flunctuating voltge or frequency....maybe diesel gen with more stable output wudnt hv the same effect.
8kva HT gen output isnt so clean jumps around intermittently from 212v to 235v...n that affects the inverter....what i do is to lower the charging current to about 22amps....and its fairly stable at this seting, if i get greedy and want higher amperage...the charging trips/fluctuates off n drops to 7amps, 2amps, 11amps etc..

my only grouse with it is the high internal consumption - wch peeps here say is upto 100w for the 4kva models and above

The experience is the same as my 4kw 48V unit.
Its been a long time since I even used the AC charger. My 4kw solar array does all the charging.
The way the unit Handles large loads gives me joy.
I am not worried about the idle power consumption.

For the 4kw/5kw and above the big fan on the AC end/opposite the battery end of the inverter seems to be always running. I keep mine on the outside balcony so the noise doesn't really bother me.

For the 3kw and below, the fan only kicks on when the internal temperature rises to about 60 degrees C and goes off as soon as the inverter cools down a little. The fan in these units is a lot quieter.

Considering its a chinco inverter, I am undecided which I should find more reliable - the always on fan or the one that kicks on only at a particular temperature - I can say though that I have some of them in service for years now and never yet needed to change a fan and of course the load carrying ability of any of the units is outstanding - I run a 2kw microwave and 2hp AC off the 3kw unit (not simultaneously of course but I do that for the 5kw sometimes grin).

Where I find them very unreliable is the charging function from the mains or generator - very finicky and prone to spoiling in a short while - I have an unverified theory that the charging function fails very quickly when using a pulser/desulfator on the battery bank the inverter is connected to - perhaps the internal components are sensitive to the transient high voltage that the electronic pulsers/desulfators put out.

You're 101% correct sir.
Those inverters are super. Despite the fan issues.

juo is the man of the moment! smiley

it has really been a very tortuous journey for me. i set out looking for the best and most economical way to replace my
tristar mppt-60 which obviously was undersized for my solar array and i searched in a number of places, contacted
quite a few sources both here and outside the forum and ended up disappointed. i noticed that most sellers still carry prices
of items calculated at an exchange rate of 450 to 550 naira to the dollar. over seven months after dollar has reduced to 365
naira and below, these peeps choose to bury their heads in the sand and pretend not to be aware of the current realities.
in comes juo the life saver! here was i chatting with this unassuming seller on this thread via watsapp and narrating
my ordeal to him and the next thing i knew he was already making arrangements to get me a midnite solar classic 150 at an
incredibly mouth-watering price. initially i thought it was all a joke until i got that much anticipated call from him telling me
that my cc was ready for collection. at the end of the day when i compared what i paid to the amount that a popular online
store is selling their midnite, i just shake my head in disbelief.

not only has juo proven to be a reliable guy to deal with, he has always been consistently delivering quality products at
unbelievably low prices and this successful deal adds another feather to his cap.

@GeorgeD1 welcome onboard. I've been using the classic 150 Mppt since March 2016. I hardly go and check the harvest since my mind is at rest.
Another good feature is the hyperVoc.
With this feature, I now use 4X4 configuration to instally 16 units of 250w poly panels. The performance in cloudy days is superb. Though I don't think I recorded any significant improvement with the legacy P&O. But will try it again soon.

@Juo, you now see all I've been discussing with you. I am glad you are doing it positively.

It's a blessing in disguise.
Early this morning, I woke up to see that my overhead water tank stand fell destroying my 2 tanks. It rained heavily yesterday night. The rain was accompanied by heavy wind. Though the concrete stand was not properly constructed and am paying heavily for this. Anyway.. .thats gone
Now I consider this an opportunity to do it better especially when I didn't plan solar water heater in the initial overhead tank stand
I still intend to use concrete with enhanced reinforCement to avert future occurrence.
Now I don't want to rely on what I know basically, I need design ideas from Members.

I am not happy at all as cost of building materials are still not pocket friendly.

Pls keep them coming, sketches and pictures.
