BusinessFor Those Who Got Carried Away By MMM by academics1(op): 1:53am On Aug 28, 2016
МММ was a Russian company that perpetrated one of the world's largest Ponzi schemes of all time, in the 1990s.[1][2] By different estimates from 5 to 40 million people lost up to $10 billion. The exact figures are not known even to the founders.

MMM was established in 1989 by Sergei Mavrodi,[2] his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi, and Olga Melnikova. The name of the company was taken from the first letters of the three founders' surnames.

Initially, the company imported computers and office equipment. In January 1992, tax police accused MMM of tax evasion, leading to the collapse of MMM-bank, and causing the company to have difficulty obtaining financing to support its operations. Faced with difficulties in funding its foreign trade, the company switched to the financial sector. It offered American stocks to Russian investors, but met with little success. Later, MMM-Invest was created for the purpose of collecting vouchers during privatisation. This effort was similarly unsuccessful.[citation needed]

MMM created its successful Ponzi scheme in 1994. The company started attracting money from private investors, promising annual returns of up to one thousand percent. It is unclear whether a Ponzi scheme was Mavrodi's initial intention, inasmuch as such extravagant returns might have been possible during the Russian hyperinflation in such commerce as import-export.[citation needed]

MMM grew rapidly. In February 1994, the company reported dividends of 1,000%, and started an aggressive TV ad campaign. Since the shares were not quoted on any stock exchange and the company itself determined the share price, it maintained a steady price growth of thousands of percent annually, leading the public to believe its shares were a safe and profitable investment.[citation needed]

An important factor in the scheme's success was word of mouth, but most of the company's success came from its extremely aggressive ad campaign, which appealed to the general public by using "ordinary" characters that viewers could identify with. The most famous of them, a "folk hero" of early 1994, was Lyonya Golubkov. Another notable marketing effort was a giveaway of free Metro trips to all Moscow citizens on a particular day. MMM also was one of the first well-known companies in Russia with a logotype and slogans ("Flying from shadow to the light" and others).[citation needed]

At its peak the company was taking in more than 100 billion rubles (about 50 million USD) each day from the sale of its shares to the public. Thus, the cashflow turnover at the MMM central office in Moscow was so high that it could not be estimated. The management started to count money in roomfuls (1 roomful of money, 2 roomfuls of money, etc.).[citation needed]

Regular publication in the media of the rising MMM share price led President Boris Yeltsin to issue a decree in June 1994 prohibiting financial institutions from publicising their expected income.[citation needed]

The success of MMM in attracting investors led to the creation of other similar companies, including Tibet, Chara, Khoper-Invest, Selenga, Telemarket, and Germes. All of these companies were characterised by aggressive television advertising and extremely high promised rates of return. One company promised annual returns of 30,000%.[citation needed]

On July 22, 1994, the police closed the offices of MMM for tax evasion. For a few days the company attempted to continue the scheme, but soon ceased operations. At that point, Invest-Consulting, one of the company's subsidiaries, owed more than 50 billion rubles in taxes (USD 26 million), and MMM itself owed between 100 billion and 3 trillion rubles to the investors (from USD 50 million to USD 1.5 billion). In the aftermath at least 50 investors, having lost all of their money, committed suicide.[citation needed]

Several organisations of "deceived investors" made efforts to recover their lost investments, but Sergei Mavrodi manipulated their indignation and directed it at the government. In August 1994 Mavrodi was arrested for tax evasion. However, he was soon elected to the Russian State Duma, with the support of the "deceived investors". He argued that the government, not MMM, was responsible for people losing their money, and promised to initiate a pay-back program. The amount ultimately paid back was minuscule compared to the amount owed.[citation needed]

In October 1995, the Duma cancelled Mavrodi's right to immunity as a deputy. In 1996, he tried to run for Russia's presidency, but most of the signatures he received were rejected. MMM declared bankruptcy on September 22, 1997.[citation needed]

While it was believed that Sergei Mavrodi left Russia and moved to the United States, it is possible that he stayed in Moscow, using his money to change apartments regularly and employ a group of former special agents. With the help of a distant relative he started Stock Generation Ltd., another pyramid scheme based around trading non-existent companies' stocks in a form of the "stock exchange game" on the company's site, stockgeneration.com. Despite a bold-letter warning on the main page that the site was not a real stock exchange, between 20,000 and 275,000 people, according to various estimates, fell for the promised 200% returns and lost their money. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, losses of victims were at least USD 5.5 million.[citation needed]

Mavrodi was found and arrested in 2003. While in custody, Mavrodi was given until January 31, 2006 to read the documents in his fraud case against him (The criminal case consisted of 650 volumes, each 250-270 pages long).[citation needed] At the end of April 2007, Mavrodi was convicted of fraud, and given a sentence of four and a half years. Since he had already spent over four years in custody, he was released less than a month later, on May 22, 2007.[citation needed] He later went on to creating yet another pyramid scheme called MMM-2011.

The MMM scandal led to increased regulation of the Russian stock market, but the legacy of the fraud led many to become extremely suspicious of any joint stock companies.

In 2015 MMM began operating in South Africa with the same business model as MMM-2011, claiming a "30% per month" return through a "social financial network".[3] The group was identified as a possible pyramid scheme by the National Consumer Commission and accounts of clients were later frozen by Capitec Bank.[4] In response to mounting criticism and official investigations by state authorities in 2016 supporters of the South African MMM scheme staged a protest march in Johannesburg.[5]

In 2016, MMM launched a website targeting the Nigerian audience.[6]

In January 2016 the Chinese government banned MMM on the grounds that it is a pyramid scheme, (Ponzi scheme), and it is not registered in the country (and as a fraudulent scheme cannot be registered).[7]

The church and bad governance in Nigeria by John Okiyi Kalu

The picture here is that of Modern Ceramics (MOCERAM) Industry Umuahia established in the 60s by Dr M I Okpara. In the 80s I visited the factory on excursion as a small boy. It was unbelievable. Very beautiful environment with lovely ceramic products of all types: cups, plates, vases, tiles, sanitary wares, bricks, ceramic blocks etc. I also saw many workers (over 300) earning honest living and looking very proud and happy.

I don't know the inside story of why Modern Ceramic Industry shut down in 1996 but I can imagine it has something to do with high operating costs and inability to compete with dumped foreign alternatives. Epileptic power supply and the high cost of alternative power must have affected the company's bottom line alongside vandalization of the equipment of the factory by agents of past military regimes. (A reliable elder told me it was part of the plot to destroy Ndigbo economically, and it also affected other Eastern Development Company owned industries like Nigercem and Presidential Hotel Enugu).

In 2003 Abia State government led by Orji Uzor Kalu sold MOCERAM to UCL Resources and Investments Ltd (UCL) and the plant was renamed UCL-Modern Ceramics Industries Limited (UCL-MOCERAM). The backstory is that UCL resources is an investment vehicle belonging to a church. Even the MD of the new UCL-MOCEREM is a clergyman. The chairman, clergyman.

Simply put, a church bought the factory and promised to resuscitate it. After years of inability to invest what they promised in their bid document the church went back to the government in 2008/2009 and requested for help. They told the government they have found a technical partner from Italy who will help them resuscitate the factory.

To support their resuscitation plan that included a re-packaging of the industry for re-commissioning on January 30, 2009, under a ceremony to be performed by Goodluck Jonathan the state government provided a 1000 (33/415) KVA electric transformer and N2b.

I don't know if the N2b was a loan or a dash. But I know that the money and transformer are inside voicemail as the factory is still as dead as dodo. Nobody has the courage to ask the church "how market" even though the state government own 5% of the shares of UCL-MOCERAM with the church owning 80% through UCL and another 15% reserved for undisclosed investors.

I was tempted to ask why the church left its primary business of tending to spiritual needs of our people to venture into manufacturing. But my thoughts immediately veered off to the massive contributions of the church in education and healthcare in the past.

Yet I find this incursion still worrisome, especially given that the church owners have failed woefully in resuscitating the factory.

It is my view that the church should immediately return that industry to the government and return whatever funds given to them to resuscitate it. Otherwise they are contributing to bad governance and the unemployment/crime situation in Abia. In fact the church can also be accused of being involved in ripping off Abians.

That brings me to the phenomenon of handing over schools to churches while government continues to pay teachers salaries. What exactly is going on? How can we say the schools have been handed over whereas the government is still paying teachers?

Who is collecting school fees and other payments made by school children in the schools taken over by the churches?

If the church is interested in taking back their schools I see no reason for Government to pay salaries of the teachers and even provide anything in schools belonging to private institutions like churches.

To worsen the situation, I have observed that the new owners of the returned schools are actively selling school lands to prospectors. That is in addition to money they are collecting under sundry titles from students and their parents.

Mpu na aru emela baptism n'ulo uka.

Such things should not continue. Either the government own the schools and fund all aspects of running the schools or the church take back their schools and run independent of government. For strategic intervention purposes, Government can build its own schools and run. Churches that cannot run their own schools can hand them back to government or community unions.

If you remove church owned schools teachers wage bill from the state's salary wage bill we will possibly reduce the state's wage bill by more than 30%. I personally thought that was why the schools were returned in the first place.

Of course I know that it will take a lot of political courage to stand up to the church. Those who tried it before woke up in the morning and heard their names as title of Sunday and week day sermons at the pulpit. Non survived the onslaught of the pastors with millions of loyal church goers.

As a Christian myself and also a common man, I will therefore prefer to appeal to the church to do the right thing. Return government properties to them if you cannot manage them efficiently and profitably to the glory of God and happiness of the flock. It is unbecoming for the church to turn itself to the enemy of common folks that they still collect tithes and offerings from every Sunday. That is tyrannical and unacceptable to non politicians like me.

Even if it was possible in the past to blackmail corrupt or desperate politicians to yield to the demands of the church for political reasons, things are now so tough that the church need to reconsider. Do not make yourselves part of our society's problem. You are supposed to be our last hope.

A church without conscience cannot be the church of Jesus Christ because the first church was a gathering of the poor, helpless and needy who came to find physical and spiritual help.

Happy Sunday to the church of Jesus Christ in Nigeria. Remember to leave Facebook and go to church today.

Christianity EtcRe: And The Seventh Angel Sounded by academics1(op): 9:39pm On Jul 07, 2016
ADMONITION: Subject -- And The Seventh Angel Sounded, (Part 2), by IYKE NATHAN UZORMA *** Good evening lovely friends. Let's continue the treatise on the foregoing subject.

Now, whoever tells you that the world of man will remain as it is now, in all its gross material systems: in all its four lower aspects and six higher aspects, in all aspects of its sub-physical and physical realms, without specific changes by the sound of the Trumpet of the Seventh Angel, is completely ignorant of the era in which we now live.

As we speak now, many powers have risen, even the gods in our Solar System, all focused on the Earth Planet. These gods include the Four Great Immortals, the Seven Mighty Ones, great Solar Lords, Great Spirits of the Inter-planetary Systems of Light, Watchers, Archangels, Angels, amongst others. These, whose roots lay within the primordial Light of the One Eternal God, working via highly elevated humans, in Divine terms, who stand upon the same foundation of Light , constitute the 'Army of Heaven'.

The Army of Heaven, led in battle in the realms beyond, by the Risen Christ of the immortal Heavens -- King of Kings and Lord of Lords -- is set for the final annihilation of the hosts of the ancient 'NACHASH' -- Prince of Darkness -- the Old Serpent, the mysterious esoteric Dragon, whose vicious occult manipulations spread over the entire world of man, in all political, religious, economical, social, academic, sciences, military and other factors of man's mundane existence.

"AND I SAW HEAVEN OPENED, AND BEHOLD A WHITE HORSE; AND HE THAT SAT UPON HIM WAS CALLED FAITHFUL AND TRUE, AND IN RIGHTEOUSNESS HE DOTH JUDGE AND MAKE WAR.
"HIS EYES WERE AS A FLAME OF FIRE, AND ON HIS HEAD WERE MANY CROWNS; AND HE HAD A NAME WRITTEN, THAT NO MAN KNEW, BUT HIMSELF. AND HE WAS CLOTHED WITH A VESTURE DIPPED IN BLOOD : AND HIS NAME IS CALLED THE WORD OF GOD.
"AND THE ARMIES WHICH WERE IN HEAVEN FOLLOWED HIM UPON WHITE HORSES, CLOTHED IN FINE LINEN, WHITE AND CLEAN.
"AND OUT OF HIS MOUTH GOETH A SHARP SWORD, THAT WITH IT HE SHOULD SMITE THE NATIONS : AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON: AND HE TREADETH THE WINEPRESS OF THE FIERCENESS AND WRATH OF ALMIGHTY GOD.
"AND HE HATH ON HIS VESTURE AND ON HIS THIGH A NAME WRITTEN, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS".
-- Rev. 19:11-16; KJV.

Here the Scripture speaks of the Eternal Lord of Light leading the Great Ones -- Forces of Light -- in their duty posts as "the Armies of Heaven". Remember, for there to be an army ready for battle, shows that there is an opposing army to battle against. Consequently, the opposing army rising against the sacred Forces of Christ, led by the mysterious Dragon, includes but not limited to the high cosmic network of embodied and disembodied vicious Astral forces, especially the hierarchy of the well organized chambers of the Mephistopheles Space Masters. These in conjunction with several subtle entities and their human instruments, serve as what is generally known as 'the forces of darkness'.

A nation may be at war but the war zone could be in a small location. There is a great war going on in our Solar System. But in this war, the Earth Planet is the war zone. This war has now come to its final aspect by the Trumpet of the Seventh Angel. To come to this point, a lot of Space combats have occurred, some of which I intend to bring up in this treatise. The forces of darkness are now fighting, with 'red eyes", for their lives. Minor aspects of these battles have come forth on the physical realm of the Earth; greater ones are about to follow.

This is not the time for anyone to toy with the Spirit of Christ or joke about his life. From the 25th of October, 2015, the entire human race, as revealed to me, were moved to the ether of the gestalt upon which the final battle for the possession of the "Soul of Earth" stands. The physical manifestation of the Trumpet of the Sixth Angel, some aspects therein, is still in motion. (The next part of this treatise will deal with that).

Now, I urge you to seek always to rise in the Light of Him who came to save the world -- JESUS CHRIST. live in His Love and you will never go down with the hosts of darkness. Pray for the mundane rulers of the nations, but put not all your hope in them, for what is happening now on Earth is beyond them. They can't give what they don't have. Again, what will soon come upon the earthmen, upon the Earth-world, will shatter the hearts of the strongest people of this world. And the God of Heaven will surely keep His Chosen Ones in His Eternal Light and Peace.

***So be it -- Amen, Amen, Amen!! I love you all. Good night.

ADMONITION: Subject --- And The Seventh Angel Sounded, (Part 1), by IYKE NATHAN UZORMA *** I greet you all lovely friends. By God's grace am back on this platform to share an important message concerning our world. This has to do with the things revealed of old, the things happening now in the metaphysical, the psychic (Astral realms), the Divine Spheres and their manifestations in the world of man.

Consequently, everyone is involved here. You are involved, I am involved. All nations, all churches, all religions, all secret cum occult fraternities, all institutions, all tribes, all dominions and authorities, all men and women are involved. Why? Because as I speak now, the Trumpet of the Seventh Angel, in the Divine Spheres of the ALMIGHTY, has sounded!!

In the Spirit, I was lifted into a higher realm of Light; by same I came into the chamber that holds the secrets of Earth, of the earthmen. There I learnt of two eternal events that herald the supreme arrival of the 'Kingdom of God'. The third event, which now is, took away the powers of men. The secrets of Nigeria and the future thereof was made bare. United States, United Kingdom and all nations that have a share in the perversion of the 'Beast', gave way to the Light of The God of Heaven.

I recognized the secret of secrets of the 'old husbandmen' and of the transfer of power to the 'new husbandmen'. Everything on Earth; that which shall remain, that which shall not be vanquished with the spirit of the 'great dragon', were shared.

The secret of this came into the dimension of "unspeakable words" (2Chorin. 12:4) which stand ahead of man.... Then it was said to me: "HARBINGER OF THE LAST COVENANT, behold, the time of your world now is the era of the Trumpet of the Seventh Angel, which has sounded". It may be recalled that in 96AD, Saint John, while in the island of Patmos, had a great Revelation. Consequently, he wrote among other things:

"AND THE SEVENTH ANGEL SOUNDED; AND THERE WERE GREAT VOICES IN HEAVEN, SAYING, THE KINGDOMS OF THIS WORLD ARE BECOME THE KINGDOMS OF OUR LORD, AND OF HIS CHRIST; AND HE SHALL REIGN FOR EVER AND EVER.... AND THE NATIONS WERE ANGRY, AND THY WRATH IS COME, AND THE TIME OF THE DEAD, THAT THEY SHOULD BE JUDGED, AND THAT THOU SHOULDEST GIVE REWARD UNTO THY SERVANTS THE PROPHETS, AND TO THE SAINTS, AND THEM THAT FEAR THY NAME, SMALL AND GREAT, AND SHOULDEST DESTROY THEM WHICH DESTROY THE EARTH" (Rev. 11:15 and 18; KJV).

Hmmm. Wait and see what will unfold in our world. And if you think there is no God, then wait and see. *** I have more for you on this subject. Strengthen your faith in the LORD your God and be counted among the faithful. I love you all. The God of Heaven, Jehovah Almighty, be praised. May the Blood of JESUS CHRIST protect and preserve you. Amen.

PoliticsGrazing Bill: Who Owns The Lands by academics1(op): 9:10am On Jun 26, 2016
i was with a lawyer the other day for my c of o, and he made me understand that government owns all the lands in nigeria and that government does not sell land to anybody but leases it out for you to occupy for a period of 100 years after which the lease may be renewed.

bring this to the grazing bill matter. government wants to establish grazing reserve for whatever for herdsmen. and some people are saying they can not do that. that the herdsmen must buy the land if the want it.

my question is; if government owns all the land, does it not have the right to do whatever it wants with it?

if you don't want fulanis to occupy your land for grazing, why not go into cattle rearing business?

why all these noise about grazing bill?

The church has absolutely no structure to meet the pressing needs of the youth. They are looking up to the Federal government to do that and fg has failed the youth over the years. Yet we continue to act as if nothing is wrong

In my candid opinion, he is the problem. Because he claims to be closer to God more than the FG. and has powerful influence over millions of his members. So if there's anything God is supposed to do in Nigeria that He hasn't done, then hold Adeboye responsible and not FG.
RomanceDanger: Watch Out For Familiarity by academics1(op): 1:10am On Jun 06, 2016
One of? the greatest dangers in any relationship is familiarity. This is not the same as knowing each other. Spouses should know each other better and more intimately than they know anyone else in the world. A husband and wife should be each other’s best friend. By familiarity, I mean a comfortable complacency that causes husband and wife to start taking each other for granted.

Familiarity reveals itself in at least three ways. First, it breeds ignorance. Couple feel so familiar with each other that they begin to ignore each other in lots of little ways that they may not even be aware of. Second, familiarity breeds assumptions.? A husband and wife begins to assume that each knows what the other is thinking. Third, familiarity breeds presumption. A wife will make a presumption regarding what her husband will say or do without even asking him first
