32-year-old Augustine Otuokwa Ogar, a graduate of Electronic and Computer Technology, has constructed a 200 watts mini hydroelectric power plant that generates electricity for the plant site and its surrounding Mgbaeshuo village of Wula Community, Eastern Boki, in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Ogar constructed the plant with locally selected materials and equipment, which he intelligently put together. He converted the kinetic energy of a flowing stream water into electric energy that is now used in homes in the village.




Generated on a small-scale with ‘run-off’ installation of a naturally flowing stream water to turn and revolve its turbine, the water rushes past the turbine, hitting its blades and causing it to spin and rotate, converting the water’s kinetic energy into mechanical energy. The water then finally flows out of the stream and continues its journey downstream.

“When the turbine spins, the electromagnetic field converts the mechanical energy into electric energy. The flow rate of the stream water is low because it is not a dam or waterfall. This is a small stream with low flowing water, yet I was able to convert it to bring pressure and fall like a dam,” he said.

He added that with the necessary encouragement and support from government and good-spirited Nigerians, he can generate power from his locally constructed hydroelectric plant to serve the entire local government and senatorial district in his state.

A statement issued Wednesday by Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, Director Army Public Relations, Nigerian Army Headquarters said that the Nigerian Army has formally gone into partnership with Nigerian indigenous motor manufacturing company, Innoson Motors Manufacturing Company for modification of some of its equipment, local production of armoured fighting vehicles and other military hardwares.

This was made manifest during a meeting between the management of the company let by the Chairman, Doctor Innocent Chukwuma and the leadership of the Nigerian Army led by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.




In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, congratulated the company for giant strides it has recorded in the production of various brands of vehicles lately.

The statement added that COAS said that the essence of the meeting was to further formalize the business relationship between the Nigerian Army and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company.

The Chief of Army Staff recalled with delight that the Nigerian Army being patriotic and in a bid to encourage local entrepreneurs asked Innoson Motors to supply 3 vehicles early last year which were found to be durable and performing very well as they were employed in combat and proved to be useful, comfortable and convenient in military operations.

It stated that based on that the Nigerian Army acquired over 70 more variants of the Innoson vehicles which were deployed in the North East for Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

He further said that the Nigerian Army desires to deepens its cooperation by partnering with Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited to conceptualize, design, modify and produce military hardwares.




The specific areas of partnership between the Nigerian Army and the company include immediate supply 100 vehicles, supply of appropriate gears, engines and chassis required for immediate modifications and repairs of armoured fighting vehicles in the North East

Buratai explained further that the Theatre of Operations was identifying requirements for production of armoured fighting vehicle in Nigerian Army Central Workshop in Kaduna and enhancing capacity of Nigerian Army personnel to actively participate on the successful implementation of these joint ventures.

Responding, Doctor Innocent Chukwuma expressed happiness that the Nigerian Army has found his vehicles working perfectly and commended the Chief of Army Staff for his great sense of patriotism.

He promised to assist the Nigerian Army in its quest for better vehicles for its troops and resuscitation of its Special Vehicle Plant and Workshops.

Dr Innocent Chukwuma further thanked the Chief of Army Staff for the commendation, maintaining that his company would continue to improve and expand its capacity in vehicle manufacturing.




He also appreciated the Nigerian Army for the patronage, describing the critical role the Nigerian Army is playing in national development through the fight against insurgency in the North East and Nigeria in general.

Highlight of the occasion was inspection and handing over of 3 of the newly manufactured vehicles by the company for trial by the Nigerian Army.

These newly manufactured vehicles are; IVM G80 Bigger Jeep, IVM G40. Smaller Jeep and IVM Granite Pickup.

For those Nigerians who have not been quick in noticing the multifarious achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, the Presidency has decided to make it just simple for everyone to see.

The Presidency  on Friday listed its achievements called '17 Highlights from 2017' newsmen report. Among the achievements include, Nigeria's exist from recession, naira stabilising against dollar, bumper harvest especially in rice, payment of pension among others. However, the report was made known to newsmen through Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

Nigeria exited its worst recession in decades. After five quarters of negative growth, the economy bounced back into positive territory. Agriculture was one of the stars of 2017, posting consistent growth levels even throughout the recession.

Also, Inflation fell for ten consecutive months during 2017 (February to November). The Naira stabilised against the dollar, after the Central Bank introduced a new forex window for Investors and Exporters. The stability has attracted billions of dollars in portfolio investments since April 2017.

On the back of a stable Naira and increased investment inflows, Nigeria's stock market emerged one of the best-performing in the world, delivering returns in excess of 40 percent. Nigeria saw bumper food harvests, especially in rice, whose local production continues to rise significantly (States like Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kano leading the pack, with Ogun joining at the end of 2017). The price of a 50kg bag of rice – a staple in the country – has fallen by about 30 percent since the beginning of 2017, as local production has gone up.

The Federal Government launched a 701 billion Naira Intervention Fund ('Payment Assurance Programme') aimed at supporting power generation companies to meet their payment obligations to gas and equipment suppliers, banks and other partners. The impact is being felt, the amount of power being distributed is now currently steady at around 4,000MW – higher than previously recorded.

The Federal Government began paying pensions to police officers who were granted Presidential pardon in 2000 after serving in the former Biafran Police during the Nigerian Civil War. These officers, and their next of kin, have waited for their pensions for 17 years since the Presidential pardon.




Nigeria rose 24 places on the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business rankings, and earned a place on the List of Top 10 Reformers in the world. Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves grew by $12 billion, reaching the highest level since 2014.

Nigeria also added, this year, an additional $250m to its Sovereign Wealth Fund. Also, Nigeria's trade balance crossed over into surplus territory, from a deficit in 2016. Nigeria successfully issued two Eurobonds (US$4.5bn), a Sukuk Bond (100 billion Naira), a Diaspora Bond (US$300m), and the first Sovereign Climate Bond in Africa, raising billions of dollars for infrastructure spending.

The Federal Government launched a Tax Amnesty scheme expected to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in additional revenues when it closes in March 2018. The Federal Government successfully commenced implementation of a Whistleblowing Programme that has so far seen recoveries of tens of millions of dollars.

The Social Investment Programme – Nigeria's most ambitious social welfare programme ever – rolled out across dozens of states. (Currently, 5.2 million primary school children in 28,249 schools in 19 states are being fed daily; 200,000 unemployed graduated enlisted into the Npower Job Scheme, and a quarter of a million loans already distributed to artisans, traders, and farmers).

The number of Nigerians facing food insecurity in the northeast dropped by half, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).




The Nigeria Customs Service recorded its highest-ever revenue collection, crossing the One Trillion Naira (N1,000,000,000) mark. [The target for 2017 was 770 billion Naira (N770,573,730,490); 2016 Collection was just under 900 billion (N898,673,857,431.07)]

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), under the new management appointed by President Buhari in 2016, remitted 7.8 billion Naira to the coffers of the Federal Government. The total amount remitted by JAMB between 2010 and 2016 was 51 million Naira.

2017 was also the Year of Nigeria's Agriculture Revolution, embodied by the successes of the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) and the Anchor Borrowers Programme. More than a dozen moribund fertilizer blending plants were revived under the PFI this year.

Finally, 2017 will be the Year that laid the foundation for a 2018 that will be Nigeria's Year of Infrastructure. A number of important infrastructure projects, in power, rail and road, are scheduled to come on-stream or inch close to completion next year.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign over his age.

On Monday, Buhari while receiving a delegation led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, said he thought he turned 74 but was told that he is 75.

Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, PDP Deputy Spokesman, Diran Odeyemi, wondered how many other “inconsistencies” were in the president’s bio data submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Odeyemi said INEC should revisit the forms filled by Buhari “to unearth other inconsistencies therein”.




While saying Nigerians do not need a President that “forgets things too easily”, Odeyemi said many Nigerians and even the global community must have been taken aback that a leader of a country did not know his real age.

He said, “How many other inconsistencies are in Mr. President’s biodata submitted to INEC? We are sure there are more. And the world is waiting on the body to give details about our President.

“We advise INEC to revisit those forms President Buhari filled in all elections he had participated in, especially those he filled before 2015 elections to unearth other inconsistencies therein.

“In a normal clime, the electoral umpire would have set in motion verification modalities to avoid further national embarrassment and expose Mr President.

“Come to think of it, a leader that does not know his real age could not be said to have sound knowledge of the people and country he governs, let alone knowing the peculiarities of the governed. This is simply not the kind of President Nigeria needs at the moment.




“Not too long ago, Nigeria became laughing stock with the inappropriate designation of German chancellor, Angela Merkel as President of West Germany by President Buhari.

“We recall President Buhari once admitted that his age would slow down his performance in office. For a country that could fall into an emergency situation anytime, like the present government-failing induced fuel scarcity, we don’t need a President that forgets things easily.

“We advise Mr. President to consider turning in his resignation letter to avoid further slowing down the country because of his age, and to also save our corporate image as a country that has a President with occasional memory failure.”

Christmas celebrations were on Monday disrupted by some suspected cultists in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports

NAN learnt that the crisis broke out in the early hours of the morning when some suspected groups of cultists stormed the centre of the town, forming barricades and burning car tires at major junctions, depriving commuters and motorists access to the roads.




Consequently, Christian worshipers who were holding Church services, were seen running in different directions for safety.

A source at the Emir of Bwari's place, told NAN that the crisis erupted because a member of the groups was allegedly murdered on Sunday, leading to a protest by the others.

An eye witness, Mr Kunle Joshua, said the mob moved from the market side of the town towards the Emir's palace, while setting few shops on fire.

NAN, however, reports that officers of the Nigerian Police Force and the military controlled the situation while residents remained indoors but some members regrouped on the road, forcing motorists to divert or return abruptly.

Many of the Abuja-bound motorists, who fled the scene, diverted their journies through Sabon-Wuse, near Suleja in Niger.

Spokesman of the Police Command in the FCT, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed to NAN that there was a protest in the town but its cause and those behind it were being investigated.

He said the DPO and the Area Command Headquarters on ground, had brought the situation under control.

Manzah denied knowledge of any death in the incident.

1. Dear Brother Knights & Ladies, I am reporting officially to you this matter of urgent national and particularly CATHOLIC concern: The change of Maria Assumpta Avenue, Owerri to Muhammadu Buhari Road by the Imo State Government.

2. I said officially because at the invitation of His Grace, Archbishop Obinna of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, I joined a high-level meeting that he chaired on the matter after Mass on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at the Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, Imo State. I therefore have the mandate of the meeting to alert the KSJI at the national level and also to brief the KSJI SSP and SSP Ladies Auxiliary. The decision was that all Catholics in Nigeria should be alerted which is why this post here, however, I shall deliver some reserved details directly to the SSPs KSJI & Ladies Auxiliary.


3. An imposing/conspicuous brick-board has already been erected directly facing the entrance of the Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri to herald this new MUHAMMADU BUHARI ROAD.

4. For those who know Owerri very well, Maria Assumpta Avenue is the expressway in front of Maria Assumpta Cathedral, leading to Owerri City Centre from Owerri - Port Harcourt Road and also intersecting Owerri - Onitsha at the entrance of the Cathedral. It is a strategic road that channels all traffics from Port Harcourt and Onitsha directions into Owerri City. Maria Assumpta Avenue is as old as the Maria Assumpta Cathedral itself.

5. Maria Assumpta Cathedral is not only the greatest man-made strucure in old Owerri, and perhaps still so in modern Owerri and therefore is of monumental historical significance to Owerri people in particular and Imo State in general but it is also a CATHOLIC edifice of a 'world heritage' status. To now locate such an edifice on a road that bears the name of an Islamic leader has been interpreted by the Church as a desecration of the Catholic Faith and by extension, Christianity and what it holds dear the most. Ironically, the roundabout at the entrance of the Cathedral where the new name of a road was erected has a giant monument of the Holy Family.

6. Maria Assumpta Cathedral is not just for the Owerri Archdiocese but it is also the headquarters of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province which extents to Abia State.

7. Catholics in Owerri, especially parishioners of the Cathedral, had a sad Sunday and boiling is the right word to describe the feeling of the Church right now. His Grace the Archbishop of Owerri in his homily described the development as an insult to the Catholic Church, a slap on the face of the Holy Family, and a disrespect to Holy Mother Mary whose name is on the Cathedral.


8. Therefore, logical reactions have been planned and Catholics nationwide are required to be part of the action, but most importantly not to work at cross-purposes. Rather, they are to seek accurate information/updates and work in accordance only with the Church. As I remain a member of the Archbishop-led Committee, I will do what I can to send in updates here when necessary. Our SSPs will also be direct leaders in this struggle and will equally provide leadership and information as they deem necessary.

9. For the avoidance of doubt, the Catholic Church is not opposed to naming ALL the roads in Owerri after His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, if the will make the Imo State Governor happy and help his political aspirations, BUT it can never be the Maria Assumpta Avenue. Therefore, the reaction of the Church has nothing to do with politics or even Islam but simply the preservation of its own Faith and heritage.

Government of Osun State has sympathized with people of the State especially the Christians, over the fuel scarcity issue during the festive period.

"It has come to the attention of the State Government of Osun that the peace, joy and serenity of this Yuletide season is somewhat being marred by fuel shortage being experienced all over the country. This is most regrettable.




"The State Government of Osun sympathises with all the people of the state whose movements have been restricted or have had to spend valuable time on queues in filling stations."

In a release signed by the Media Adviser to the Governor, Mr Sola Fasure, the State Government urged the residents to be calm as the Federal Government has concluded plans to address the issue.

"However, we have received assurances from the Federal Government and not less a person than President Muhammadu Buhari that the situation is being addressed, that more barges of fuel are being received and distributed at the moment and that the crisis will soon be over within the shortest possible time."

While wishing the Christians, a Merry Christmas, the State Government also urged marketers to desist from hoarding fuel so as not to worsen the current situation.

"The State Government therefore urges fuel marketers in the state to desist from hoarding, profiteering and other sharp and unethical practices that could exacerbate the situation, worsen the plight of residents and detract from our Omoluabi status.




"The State Government urges residents and fillings stations to be orderly and peaceful in the sales of fuel, where the product is available. There should not be more than a single lane of vehicles on the queue, to prevent traffic congestion and vehicle accidents. On no account must any road be blocked or made impassable as a result of fuel queue. Filling stations must observe all safety rules in order to prevent accidents and fire outbreaks.

"Law enforcement agencies, particularly the Police, Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) should properly take charge of the situation and do the needful in order to maintain law and order, prevent unruly and disorderly public conducts, protect lives, ensure public safety and free flow of traffic.

"The State Government of Osun wishes all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in Advance." the release reads in part.
