27 members of the Rivers State contingent to the just concluded sports festival in Ilorin, Kwara State, were involved in a ghastly motor accident, at Emohua, on their way back last night.
It was a case of over speeding as confirmed by one of the injured, Bright Emmanuel, a cyclist who won one of the two gold medals the state hauled at the event. The bus rammed into a stationary truck, which was abandoned along the road.
Being that they were in a convoy, a second bus also rammed into the first one that rammed into the trailer. Several athletes got injured including Sgt Momoh Rahim, team Rivers security personnel, whose left leg could be amputated.

The Police and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) have arrested a teenager, Afolabi Omotoyosi, and 16 others for alleged cultism related offences in Mushin.

Omotoyosi, a Junior Secondary School (JSS III) pupil, was alleged to be the leader of a cult group.

He was said to have been armed with cutlasses and knives during his arrest on Saturday and was believed to be preparing to attack residents.

Omotoyosi’s confession, security agents said, led to the clampdown of the others yesterday.

According to LNSC’s spokesman, Olawale Afolabi, the teenager confessed to being the gang leader, adding that he committed thuggery, bullying of other school children and residents.

Afolabi said the other suspects including a lady, were being interrogated by the police.

EducationASUU Strike: No End In Sight by activistjohnny(op): 2:33am On Sep 15, 2017
Gbenro Adesina/Ibadan

Hope that the strike action embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is about to come to an end appears dashed as congresses of universities met across the country to deliberate on the recent agreements reached between the leadership of the union and the Federal Government.
Feelers from the congresses that have met indicate that the unions were not ready to call of the strike because the government is yet to show the necessary commitment to their plights.

For instance, in congresses held yesterday at the University of Ibadan, UI, and Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, EKSU, members of the union decided to continue with the strike action on the ground that the Federal Government’s offers are not acceptable to them.

According to reliable sources, the staff are not comfortable with the fact that only about one of the seven demands, which is the issue of staff schools of the universities was convincingly addressed by the government. Government only made promises as regards the other demands which do not show any difference from what was on ground before the strike.
As at the time of filing this report, UI was devoid of activities as all unions on campus both academic and non academic have embarked on indefinite strike.
A lecturer from EKSU said, “We have agreed that the strike must continue until the Federal Government is ready to grant our demands in practical way not in promissory act”.

In one of the interaction with the media after the last meeting the union had with the government, ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said that he could not determine when the union would call off its strike adding that calling off the strike would be determined by the entire members of the union.
However, the effects of the strike has began to manifest as some students who have secured employments have decided to abandon their academic programmes.

A Master’s Degree student of UI who did not want his name mentioned said, “I have been looking for a job for a while now. Because I don’t want to be sitting at home, I obtained a postgraduate form and I was admitted. We were about to start our exam when the strike action began. Now I have a job. I can’t trade the job with the Master’s prpogramme. If I decide to leave the job and go back to school when the strike action is over, what gives me the impression that I will get a job as soon as I am through with the Master’s programme? I will do the Master’s programme when it is more convenient”.

Another student said, “I am considering private university, maybe BABCOCK or Lead City University. Government universities in Nigeria are becoming a problem and time waster. Unfortunately, we don’t have responsible government who will be ready to do what the unions are asking for. First, people in government will chose to embezzle people’s money or mismanage it rather than using it for public good. Since Nigeria has been in recession, have you heard political office holders reducing their salaries and allowances? Go to the National Assembly, and see the exotic cars they are buying. Their salaries are been paid as at when due.

Under the nose of President Muhammadu Buhari, those in the executive are also stealing. How many thieves will Buhari catch? Except the system is working, nothing good can come from Nigeria”.
To some female students, the strike action is a blessing to them as some pregnant female students delivered babies.

One of them said, “I thank God because I don’t know how I would have coped. I gave birth within two weeks the strike action commenced. That means that I would have given birth to my child while my first semester examination is on-going. This means that I might have not been able to write all my papers. So you can see now that it is a blessing for me. If the strike action is called off now, at least I can sit for my exam and graduate when my mates are graduating”.

CrimeWe Sell A Human Hand For N5k – Cultists Arrested Alongside A Traditional Ruler by activistjohnny(op): 2:07am On Sep 15, 2017
Two suspected cult members in Ogun State say they sell human hands for N5,000 each to raise funds for their operations.

The men, Oluwaseun Odueh, aka Cleff; and Wasiu Adejumo, aka Bomber, both members of the Eiye Confraternity, were arrested by operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad in the Ibogun area of the state.

The suspects, who were also accused of being robbers, were arrested along with three herbalists, including a traditional ruler, who allegedly bought the hands of the victims.

The herbalists, Ifatona Akanni, aka Ajana Oro; Isiaka Ajani and Oko Musa, said they had bought seven hands from the cult members, adding that each was bought for N5,000.

Those killed by the men were identified as one Tunde, who was beheaded at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Railway Line, Ogba Ayo, Ijoko, in 2016, with his two hands cut off.

Also killed were one Lateef, Kehinde and Yinka, in the Ijoko area between 2016 and January 2017. The hands of the men were cut off.

The police said on May 28, 2017, three men were also killed at Candozo Hotel, Fadahunsi, Ijoko, around 8pm, while in June 2017, two people were killed at Ogba Ayo Junction and Agoro Junction, Ijoko, with their hands missing.

One of the suspected cult members, Odueh, said all the victims were members of the Aiye Confraternity, a rival cult, adding that they were killed during reprisals.

He said their hands were sold to herbalists to raise funds for the activities of his gang.

He said, “Supremacy clashes between the cults started about six years ago in Ijoko. The Aiye cult killed our members, Godogodo, Fele, Callous and others. Each time they killed them, they cut off their hands. We had to retaliate by doing the same thing to them.

“Initially, we were throwing away the body parts. But when we realised that we needed money for our activities, we decided to make enquiries on what we could do with the body parts. That was how we started cutting off their hands and selling them. I have been involved in the murder of four members of the rival cult.”

The 32-year-old said he became a cult member due to the oppression he suffered as an undergraduate of a university in Ogun State, adding that he joined the gang in his community when he finished from school.

The second suspect, Adejumo, who also confessed to be an Internet fraudster (yahoo yahoo), said he was part of the squad that killed two members of the Aiye cult he identified as Kehinde and Lekan Welder.

The 30-year-old said a fight between two leaders in the Ijoko area led to the increase in cult killings in the community.

“We killed Kehinde and Lekan Welder because they killed our members and cut off their hands. They killed Fele (Sunday) and Callous, a final year student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. They also killed Godogodo and Rati. We sell the hands to herbalists,” he added.

One of the herbalists, Musa, said he had bought three hands from the cult members, adding that he had paid N10,000 and was owing them N5,000 balance.

He said, “I am a herbalist. I also consult Ifa and Opele for my clients. I met these boys when they came to worship Ogun at my shrine and since then, they had sold only three hands to me; both dry and fresh. I use the hands for asiri bibo (fetish blessing). I bought each hand for N5,000. I gave them N10,000, and owed a balance of N5,000.”

The second herbalist, Akanni, 53, said he had bought two hands from the men for the same purpose.

When our correspondent asked how he knew the part was useful for the purpose and who his clients were, he parried the questions, saying the charm didn’t work.

The third herbalist, Ajani, who is the baale of Ososun village, in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, said the cult members introduced themselves to him as land speculators, adding that they later brought two hands which he bought for N10,000.

The Zone 2 Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said Odueh was the first to be arrested.

She said, “Odueh was arrested on August 23 by the ZIS team during a patrol at about 2pm in the Ibogun area of Ogun State. On interrogation, he confessed to belonging to the Eiye Confraternity and said he was also a member of an armed robbery gang. We subsequently arrested other members of the gang.

“The police recovered three locally-made cut-to-size guns, seven live cartridges, and human parts processed into concoctions and powder for fetish use from the suspects.

“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Adamu Ibrahim, has ordered that the suspects should be arraigned in court.”

PoliticsFG Orders Probe Of Past JAMB Registrars After The Incumbent Registrar Remit #5b by activistjohnny(op): 12:37am On Sep 15, 2017
The federal executive council (FEC) has ordered the probe of previous heads of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over poor remittances.

The current registrar, Is-haq Oloyede (pictured), has remitted N5 billion to the coffers of government in one year, with N3 billion still outstanding.

This is the highest remittance since the body was set up 40 years ago and there was no increase in application fees since Oyebode was appointed in 2016.

The highest remittance by JAMB before Oloyede succeeded Dibu Ojerinde was N3 million in a year.

Disclosing this on Wednesday after the cabinet meeting, Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, also said former heads of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will be probed.
She said the disparity in the remittances of the two agencies in the past has necessitated the probe. Other agencies with similar discrepancies in their revenue remittances will be probed, she said.

…MTN Nigeria buys copies of her first book
Nkechi Chidi-Ogbolu is one of many Nigerians making our country proud. A graduate at 18, she has made history as the youngest person to graduate from Howard University, Washington, DC USA. Selected to begin a PHD programme at University of California, Davis in September 2017, Nkechi - one of the youngest PHD scholars in the world, is poised to kick off a new adventure.

On her recent visit to Nigeria, Nkechi paid a visit to the MTN Headquarters in Ikoyi and was warmly received by the Corporate Relations Executive, Tobechukwu Okigbo and staff of MTN who had the privilege of receiving autographed copies of her book.

At 18, the fun loving teenager who contemplated dropping out of college at one point, has already accomplished what many adults will struggle to achieve in their lifetime.

This go-getter took the SATs and TOEFL at age 13 and received 5 scholarships offering admission to 5 different colleges in the United States. She chose Howard University.

She’s the author of the book, Tales of an Uber Minor in College, which highlights the importance of finding and seizing opportunities, and the important roles friendship, mentoring and family play in shaping our lives.

In the book, she tells stories about her years as an undergraduate at Howard University and goes on to inspire and encourage Nigerian youths to embrace greatness in a world designed to limit potentials.

MTN purchased copies of her book for distribution across primary and secondary schools in a bid to encourage and inspire young scholars to dream big and reach for the stars.

To her, her resolve and dedication to achieve greatness. She is living proof that even ordinary people can achieve extraordinary and exceptional things.

PoliticsSARS Operatives Responsible For The Series Of Kidnappings And Armed Robbery-wike by activistjohnny(op): 2:45am On Sep 14, 2017
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has declared that most of the kidnapping and armed robbery taking place in the state are perpetrated by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The governor stated that the embattled Rivers State Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) Commander, Mr Akin Fakorede and his operatives have been indicted by an official Police Signal, which indicated that they are responsible for the series of kidnapping and deadly robbery across the state.
Addressing journalists at the Government House Port Harcourt today, Governor Wike stated that the SARS Commander was planted in the state to sabotage the security architecture of the state and create an atmosphere of fear. He said that criminal activities of Mr Fakorede were uncovered by the Inspector General of Police X Squad Abuja deployed to the state after the squad busted the attempted kidnap of one Mr Azumana Ifeanyi on September 11, 2017 at the GRA, Port Harcourt.
The Official Police Signal with the title: "Police Wireless Message " and Reference Number DT0: 121030/09/2017 ---INGENPOL-X-FHQ ABUJA TO-INGENPOL SEC ABUJA, noted that the squad received a distress call on the kidnap of Mr Ifeanyi and immediately swung into action. According to the signal, they met the three SARS operatives robbing and a gun duel ensued. The operatives had taken Mr Ifeanyi to a Fidelity Bank ATM where they compelled him to withdraw N500,000 as ransom.
One of the SARS Operatives was killed, while Inspector Justice Nyeche who led the IGP team was injured.
Governor Wike said: "Most of the kidnapping and armed robbery taking place in this state are done by men of SARS. They use exhibit vehicles to operate. As the Chief Security Officer of the state, you complain, but they choose to play politics with crime. They fight crime in some state, but they refuse to fight crime in Rivers State. We are done with the elections, but they are using SARS to create insecurity in the state. As I speak with you, they will deny. But the SARS Operative who was killed was amongst those who raided the Rivers East Senatorial District Collation Centre. This man can be identified in the video as one of those who invaded the collation centre with Fakorede."
The governor stated that the deliberate acts of violence being perpetrated by the Police have been planned as part of the rigging process for 2019.
"I have never seen a country where they politicise crime. It is very obvious that they want to give the impression that Rivers State is unsafe. They want to instil fear preparatory to declaring during the elections that they are so much killing", he said.
He added: "Authorities deliberately trying to destroy a whole state and you want the people to be happy. I will no longer write. Now is the time to take my case to the public, for the whole world to know what is happening ".
The governor said that his administration has invested more than any other in security logistics, yet the Police work against the state. It will be recalled that the embattled Rivers State SARs Commander, Mr Akin Fakorede was caught on video invading the Rivers East Senatorial District Collation Centre on December 12, 2016.

CrimeHow Detectives Tracked Killer Of Catholic Priest To Lagos Hideout by activistjohnny(op): 1:25am On Sep 14, 2017
Detectives attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Lagos Command, have arrested the killer of Reverend Father Cyriacus Onunkwo, a Catholic priest serving in Imo State.
The suspect, identified as Raphael Ndukwe, was tracked down to his hideout in the Ajangbadi area of Ojo, based on a tip-off.
Fr. Onunkwo was kidnapped in Imo State by gunmen on Friday, September 1, 2017 from his car and taken to Omumma, where his body was found the next day.
He was returning home to organise the funeral of his late father when he was abducted. Ndukwe is the leader of a kidnapping gang that had been terrorising Imo State for many months.
He escaped to Lagos after four of his members were arrested in the state. Ndukwe’s gang was also allegedly responsible for the kidnap of one Gloria Emordi who was said to have visited Imo State for a burial ceremony on April 22, 2017.

On arrival in Lagos, the suspect, nicknamed Tiger, settled down with some of his friends who operate as thugs at the Alaba International Market, Ojo, but later fled to Ajangbadi, when the heat on him became hot.

But the police in Lagos finally tracked down the 29-year-old suspect and arrested him on September 10, 2017. Soon after his arrest, he confessed to some of the crimes he committed both in Lagos and the South-East.

The told the police that this was not the first time he would be escaping to Lagos after engaging in a criminal operation.

CrimeNigerian Man Sentenced To 46 Months In Prison For Scamming U.S Companies by activistjohnny(op): 3:30am On Sep 13, 2017
A 30-year-old Nigerian man who scammed several U.S. companies out of millions of dollars by posing as the CEO has been sentenced to 46 months in prison.
According to Dallas Morning News, Amechi Colvis Amuegbunam achieved this by creating email accounts that made it look as if he were a company executive and then asked employees handling accounts to wire money wherever he wanted, most often to foreign banks.
Last week, he was sentenced to 46 months in prison for scamming more than 10 victims out of $3.7 million. He originally faced up to 30 years if convicted by a jury, but his lawyer argued in court documents that Amuegbunam did not have any previous criminal record and was not a danger to society.
In addition to his prison stint, Amuegbunam will have to pay $615,555 in restitution for his use of this scam, known as a “business email compromise scheme,” which the Morning News notes has become a crime of choice for some organized crime groups in Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, according to the FBI.
Amuegbunam was arrested in 2015 in Baltimore and pleaded guilty back in March to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The 30-year-old was living in the U.S. on a student visa at the time of his crimes. His lawyer, Ezekiel Tyson, said that he was pleased with the sentence that his client received.

“Mr. Amuegbunam has grown tremendously as a person and as a man throughout the process of this criminal case,” Tyson said. “He is absolutely one of the most intelligent and creative individuals I have ever represented.”

Amuegbunam will be deported back to Nigeria after finishing up his sentence, Tyson confirmed. Tyson said that Amuegbunam had plans to become a farmer and produce organic pesticides, going along a different path from the sophisticated scam that he pulled off.

“I expect once he puts his intelligence, creativity and drive towards legitimate enterprises, he will have a very positive future,” Tyson said. “Mr. Amuegbunam also plans to do his best to repay the restitution he owes to the victim companies.”
