HealthHiv CURE NOW AVAILABLE FOR NEW BORN INFANTS- Says Research by Adanyebe(op): 4:09pm On Mar 04, 2013
A new born baby girl in Mississippi who was born and diagnosed of HIV has been fully cured after very early treatment with adequate standard drug therapy,Researchers from U.S reported that on Sunday, in a potentially ground-breaking case that could offer insights on how to eradicate HIV infection in its youngest victims.

The child’s story is the first account of an infant achieving a so-called functional cure, a rare event in which a person achieves remission without the need for drugs and standard blood tests show no signs that the virus is making copies or replication of itself.

More testing needs to be done to see if the treatment would have the same effect on other children, but the results could change the way high-risk babies are treated and possibly lead to a cure for children with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

“This is a proof of concept that HIV can be potentially curable in infants,” said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who presented the findings at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta.

The child’s story is different from the now famous case of Timothy Ray Brown, the so-called “Berlin patient,” whose HIV infection was completely eradicated through an elaborate treatment for leukemia in 2007 that involved the destruction of his immune system and a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection.

Among the three tests carried, the first looked for silent reservoirs of the virus where it remains dormant but can replicate if activated. That is detected in a type of immune cell known as a CD4 T-cell. After culturing the child’s cells, they found no sign of the virus.

Secondly, the team looked for HIV DNA, which indicates that the virus has integrated itself into the genetic material of the infected person. This test turned up such low levels that it was just above the limit of the test’s ability to detect it.

The third test looked for bits of genetic material known as viral RNA.

PoliticsFederal Court Gives Jonathan The Go-ahead For 2015 Election by Adanyebe(op): 3:08pm On Mar 01, 2013
The president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been given the go ahead by a Federal High Court in Abuja to contest in the 2015 Presidential election.

The presiding Judge, Justice Mudashiru Oniyangiin his statement stated that, his judgment does not in any way guarantees the President as an automatic presidential flag bearer for the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP)

Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi held that Jonathan’s assumption of the office of president after the demise of late former President Umar Yar’Adua was in line with what the National Assembly aptly described as Doctrine of Necessity and not as a result of emerging winner in any by-election conducted after the death of the late former president.

He warned that his decision should not be misconstrued to mean that Jonathan has become an automatic candidate of the party for the 2015 presidential election.

The court further held that the president’s tenure of office begins to count from 29th May, 2011 when he was sworn into office as the elected president of Nigeria and not 6th May, 2010 when he assumed office following Yar’Adua’s death.

The court held that the suit as presently constituted does not disclose any cause of action and that the plaintiff, Mr. Cyriakus Njoku, lacks the locus standi in instituting the case.

Cyriakus Njoku had approached the court seeking for an order to restrain President Jonathan from running for office in 2015 stating that it will amount to breaching a constitutional provision which prescribed a period of not more than eight years for occupants of the office of the president.

BusinessNigeria's Forex Reserve Amounts To $47.02 Billion by Adanyebe(op): 11:09am On Mar 01, 2013
Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves rose to its peak in for the first time in 4 years and grows by 3.8% on monthly bases to $47.02 billion as at 21/02/2013.

The most recent data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disclose that the country’s forex reserves were $45.26 billion in a month earlier . Just about a year ago, when it was recorded $34.48 billion, it has now risen by 34.99%
Currency dealers say the apex bank has been spending less of the reserve to fund its twice-weekly foreign exchange auction as a result of increased dollar flows from offshore investors buying debt.

The inclusion of Nigerian bond in the JP Morgan emerging market index last year attracted flurry of offshore investors, boosting dollar flows and contributing to the growth in reserves.

PhonesMost Stolen iPhones Are In Africa by Adanyebe(op): 3:21pm On Feb 27, 2013
Ever since cell phone carriers created a national registry of stolen phones on Nov. 1, it’s become much harder, if not impossible, to reactivate one in the U.S. That’s the good news. Here’s the bad: The database isn’t likely to rob thieves of the desire to steal your phone.

All major U.S. cell phone companies, including Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), T-Mobile, and Sprint (S), are now sharing the serial numbers of stolen phones through the registry. Like VIN numbers on cars, these unique IDs are branded onto the hardware of the device and are hard to tamper with. If a thief tries to pop out a SIM card and use a phone purchased from one U.S. company to sign up for service with another, the serial number will automatically show up as belonging to a stolen phone.Courtesy ecoATM

But wireless providers in other countries aren’t part of the registry. And savvy iPhone thieves have realized that the way to get around it is by selling smartphones overseas, according to Washington, D.C., Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

Secondhand dealers buy used phones for cash, then pool and sell them to middlemen who resell them to retailers in Africa or China, says Lanier, who led the effort to establish the U.S. registry. A stolen phone can go for $400 abroad, she says. “That completely voids the blacklist we worked a year and half to put in place,” Lanier told me. “The new entrepreneurs … have created new challenges for us.”
Lanier has recently begun to point fingers at companies she says are facilitating the black market. One is the large video-game retailer, Gamestop, in Grapevine, Tex., which buys used smartphones. “We’ve found stolen phones in their possession,” Lanier said on Feb. 19 on a D.C. local news program, NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt. Lanier said on the show that Gamestop has started to provide Washington police with serial numbers of the used phones it buys and is considering ending the practice of paying cash for phones. “We are working with police,” Gamestop spokeswoman Wendy Dominguez writes in an e-mail.
The Federal Communications Commission is in the early stages of an effort to crack down on the black market overseas. The agency recently signed a data-sharing agreement with Mexico; wireless companies in Mexico and the U.S. are now sharing serial numbers of stolen phones. The FCC is looking to sign more agreements with other countries, says FCC spokesman Neil Grace. Hopefully that will happen soon. It might be the only way to stop some guy on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria, from listening to your playlists, checking out your vacation pictures, or worse–stealing your identity.

FamilySchool Teacher Kills Her Two Children by Adanyebe(op):
Tragedy struck in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State, capital recently as a school teacher killed her two children. The middle-aged woman was alleged to have slashed the throats of her four-year-old daughter, Nneoma and her two-year-old son, Godswill, with a machete, while the kids were asleep last Wednesday.

The Ebonyi State police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Sylvester Igbo, who confirmed the murder, said Uchaji fled their Elias Odili Street residence, in Abakaliki to Lagos after committing the crime. Narrating the incident, the elder brother to the father of the slain children, Mr. John Uchaji, described the incident as incredible, saying that there was yet no clue as to why the woman could have killed her children without provocation.

He added that the father of the kids came to him midnight on the day of the incident to report what happened. The state police spokesman however, said that the command has commenced investigations into the matter, adding that bodies of the children had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy. He advised the family not to take laws into their hands, promising that the police would get to the root of the incident.
