Beautiful piece of history. |
On May 24, 1989, palpable tension had gripped the University of Benin (UNIBEN) campus in then Bendel State. Students were observed loitering about the premises of the students’ union building or gathering in groups, discussing at the top of their voices. The students were clutching copies of two handbills which contained purported misdeeds of the administration of military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, and some of his helmsmen. In the group discussions of the agitated students, they reasoned that at a time when government introduced Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), an economic policy which ordinarily dictates belt-tightening and frugality, it was an irony that the same proponents of the SAP were the ones milking the economy dry. The students apparently were expecting the student union leadership to address them, following which there would be declaration of Aluta (violent protest). The restless students were not disappointed. After a storming session, the student union executive in concert with the students parliament resolved on a mass protest. The leaders addressed the students one after another and before long, the latter were primed for a ‘mother of all Aluta.’ Continue here; http://ipledge2nigeria.com/index.php/blogs/entry/nigeria-in-history-anti-sap-students-riots-that-shook-ibb-government.html |

Crocodiles, monkeys, giant rats, hogs, bushbucks and exotic birds are just some of the protected wildlife at the Lekki Conservation Center. "When you enter here, you'll never believe that you are in Lagos, the environment is serene," says Mr Adetayo, the Project Manager of LCC. Do you ever feel like when talking to your husband or boyfriend, you’re talking to a brick wall? Ever have to ask him to wash the dishes or mow the lawn, four or five times in one night? Well, chances are, it’s because you’re choosing the wrong time of day to initiate the conversation. Cosmopolitan’s February issue highlighted the best times of the day for women to get men to do what they want, based upon biorhythms and hormones. Based on the research of Evie Bentley, biorhythms expert researcher and clinical pharmacist Angie D. Meeker, and focusing on biorhythms and hormones and how they affect behavior, the best (and worst) times for sex, household chores, arguments and meaningful conversations were assessed. Below are What They found… Best time for sex. They found that men are most primed for sex as soon as they wake up. This is because testosterone builds up as they sleep, and as such, their libido is highest early in the morning. Best time for household chores. It was found that getting a man to help with household chores should be done mid-morning, around 11am, when cortisole and adreneline- strength and energy producing hormones- are highest. Best time to engage in conversations. Meaningful conversations should be saved until the afternoon when he is less distracted, and calmer. His levels of testosterone slowly fall throughout the day, so by around 2pm, the levels will be very low, meaning he will be much more relaxed than earlier in the day, and thus, more likely to listen to you. Bayer Schering Pharma, a pharmaceutical and contraceptives manufacturer, validated these findings in a similar survey, and broadened the study to outside of the family unit. They looked at the best time to ask for a promotion and the best time to win an argument. They found… Read More here; http://ipledge2nigeria.com/index.php/blogs/entry/-ways-to-get-your-man-do-whatever-you-wishanytime-.html |

Another orgy of religious violence was on Saturday recorded in Wukari, Taraba state with at least five persons killed, many others injured and property destroyed. The sectarian crisis followed an argument between two football players during a morning training session in the pitch. Eye-witnesses said an aggrieved Muslim player allegedly gunned down a Christian teammate following the squabble. This triggered retaliatory attacks that led to the death of four persons. Our source said: “they disagreed over a football related issue during play. One of them felt too aggrieved that he dashed home and brought out a gun and shot his co-argumentator dead”. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was late for office so he asked his wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. A tribute to Nigerian icons who have dilligently served this country, believing in a true Nigeria - with integrity, pride and passion. A positive influence on a large majority of Nigerians. They passed on the baton... What do we really seek for posterity? Nigeria’s 52nd Independence anniversary has come and gone, but we still bask in the euphoria of the month(October) we became independent. What do we remember of October 1st 1960? Do we remember the man who received the instruments of independence on behalf of Nigeria? Other countries keep libraries full of books and archives about their first leaders. All Americans know chapter and verse about George Washington. Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah is an icon. What of Nigeria’s case? Are we accurately recording our history for our children and descendants? The only book on Nigeria’s first Prime Minister Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was written by a foreigner. Little is known about Balewa. In the first of a new series of articles on “Nigeria’s forgotten heroes”, ipledge2nigeria will chronicle and attempt to release a little more information about Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
