Shey an human right activist has dared him to a public debate on channels, he should accept the challenge. All this clandestine OGTV gimmicks doesn't hold water. I remember Gov Fashola came out on LTV too giving reasons why he couldn't reduce LASU's tuition fee, education is expensive bla bla bla. I'm still not into politics, reduce my tuition fee is what I want. |
SLIDEwaxie: I just like this man. What else do they want to hear? That's why your vocab is this poor.. Product of a failed system. |
oduastates: Do you people realise that over 90 % of the people are not university students or lecturers ?Do you realize that we've been paying over 200K and the quality of education is still gibberish? Do you realize that we've been neglected for the past 3 years b4 the governor announced his election-induced reduction. Do you realize that the governor is an accountant? So your suggestion on alternative budget doesn't hold water. If there's a will, there's a way. This has governed man's existence for a long time. We don't want to blackmail the government, I don't know where you manufactured that from. Neither are been used by any party. I was playing football that Wednesday evening when SUG came to rally for donations to transport students to Abeokuta for the protest. I later learnt that market women at isale-oko part of sagamu raised over 5,000 naira for us. Take a trip there and ask. If we were sponsored, we'd not need such stress and the protest that saw 3,000 people at Abk would have seen about 10,000 people. It's easier to believe the govt propaganda tho, so I don't blame anyone. Buh looking from the wide angle, he hasn't handled this crisis well. I agree SUG might have been childish buh they've refused to shift grounds. The governor has deceived us countless times after so much neglect. He claimed he didn't know we were in our first semester and pleaded for one week to effect the reduction.. Now, he said some prattle things on OGTV yesterday.. I'm not happy to see that even the public has failed to identify with our plights in this struggle. Well, that's who we are. I'm sure you hypocrites would have done worse if you were in our shoes. |
Analysing Ogun State Government's Press Release on OOU Closure The Press release issued by the state government on the closure of OOU is filled with lies and half-truths; something that has become a regular occurrence whenever this government is concerned. It is true that the Ogun state government met OOU in a bad way; a result of the mismanagement and havoc wreaked by the Otunba Gbenga Daniel regime. Under OGD, the university was neglected, funds of cooperative societies were 'borrowed', swallowed and never returned, lecturers were sacked massively and core courses were on the verge of dis-accreditation, tuition fee was jerked up. But then, in 2011 while campaigning, Governor Amosun promised that if he was elected, he would effect a 50% reduction in the fees. Before OGD increased the fees, indigenes of the state were paying 50, 000+ and non-indigenes were paying 70, 000+, after the increment, indigenes started paying 120, 000+ while non-indigenes paid 150, 000+. Now, after winning the election, Governor Amosun failed to effect that reduction. It was after the Oyeyiola Joel-led OOU SUG agitated and threatened to storm Abeokuta that the Governor appeased the students by implementing a 10% reduction. The reason why students agreed to the 10% reduction then was that he appealed that he was 'rebuilding' the state owing to the reign of terror and mismanagement unleashed by the OGD government. He however promised to fully implement the 50% reduction. Till date, he has failed to do that. Like his predecessor, Governor Ibikunle Amosun has neglected the university in terms of funding and infrastructural development. The tradition in OOU is that the State will give the university 70% funding while the university will generate the remaining 30% money needed for the running and development of the university. But Governor Amosun has failed woefully in this regard. He claimed that his government pays 600 million to OOU monthly as subvention. What a lie! OOU's wage bill is 250 million. Where then did he pay 600 million? The accreditation panel that visited OOU recently dis-accredited some core courses in the university due to the state of infrastructural decay in OOU. The recent nfrastructural developments in OOU are due to the interventions of ETF and as a result of the funding released by the FG which was a result of ASUU's last struggle. Let it be on record that out of the ten (10) tertiary institutions in Ogun state, OOU is the only one that has been agitating for a reduction in fees. The reason is that other schools pay below 100, 000 with the exception of TASUED that pays slightly above 100, 000. OOU pays as high as 290, 000. The OOU SUG started agitations for a reduction about 3 months ago. The reason is that the number of students that applied for leave of absence (dropped out) this year alone triples that of the last 2 years. In the faculty of science alone, more than 90 students dropped out because they couldn't afford the astronomical fees. Other schools kept mute because they pay peanuts. Announcing a reduction in the fees of all tertiary institutions therefore is a political move. While we do not care about the political undertone of the reduction, we care that the announced reduction does not meet our demands and even more, that it wouldn't be implemented this session, but next session; after the 2015 elections. Who wants to trust this government again? It becomes a case of fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. The state government said Lagos state government could afford to reduce the fees to 25, 000 because their IGR is more than ours in Ogun state. Let us not forget that as worse as we all say OGD's regime was, for 7 of the 8 years he spent in power, OOU didn't pay more than 100, 000. It was when he was nearing the end of his 7th year when he was showing his evil colours and was at the height of his power drunkenness that he jerked up the fees. How did he manage to run OOU for those 6 years with OOU students paying 50, 000 despite our IGR? Governor Amosun and his cronies should stop looking for hiding places because there is none. The lockdown of OOU only goes to show a lack of focus and responsibility on the part of this state government. Rather than sit up and respond to the demands; they are bent on spreading propaganda and using students to fight students. They have claimed we are being sponsored by opposition. If that is true, we ask them to publish the names of the sponsors, the student leaders involved and the evidence. If they are convinced that our cause and demands are political, let the Governor announce the reduction we want and implement it this session and see if we will still talk or protest. Until they can do that, let them tuck in their lips. We expect all the propaganda; you can't fight government and expect them to sit back and relax. They will fight back with their might. We are determined however to fight this till we win. We are convinced of the genuineness of our course and our students have an unbreakable belief in us, they have refused to travel home in spite of government's threats. Our students are prepared to fight this no matter how long it takes. We are also aware that they are planning to bring together some sponsored 'professional parents' in a Parents Teachers Meeting and show them on OGTV. The 'parents' will tell you that they are happy with Governor Amosun's work and praise him for the good work. The parents will denounce the protesting students as political agents and sponsored people claiming their children are not there. Fellow Nigerians, my mother is yet to get her own invitation to the meeting. None of our mothers are being invited. The state government is manufacturing mothers who are not ours to discredit this. They are not our parents, we do not know them. When they show them, do not believe them. It can only be shown on OGTV, a station renowned for falsehood and lies. We are not one of those schools that will go and prostrate to anybody to reopen our school. Truth is on our side, we are convinced of the correctness of our cause and as such will fight the government with everything we have until we achieve the reduction and achieve it this year. We are not sponsored! We are genuine students fighting a genuine cause. Let the public beware and refuse to swallow the lies of this government. James Ogunjimi CDHR Coordinatorr |
mogentle: The SUG is really showing the signs of being sponsored by opposition especially the Labour Party whose chief financier in Ogun State is nobody but OGD who was responsible for the high fees being paid by OOU students. OGD increased the fees then and there was not a single protest, but now Amosun reduced it, they are not satisfied. Someone even said how much is 40% reduction? I laughed. OOU can never make Amosun to lose election, boys should go back to school and study. This Aluta Jet has missed the Road. That one is your opinion nw. |
2sExy1: the dude is a kid fed from childhood till he got where he is... he hasn't really experience hash realities of life. I used to think like him until my mum died.Someone attacked ur blog, so you had to attack me? |
LARRYDKING: We can't rule out the possiblity of this but it's very low compared to the state unis where it's a normal practice.Your mind is made up already.. It's a normal practice everywhere. |
Op you're very wrong! I was a unilag diploma student some years back. Diploma cutoff for pharmacy was 116. I scored 120. A girl who scored 95 got her admission letter before me. I was shocked! I later learnt the VC had his own list, registrar had her own, even the Oba of Lagos had his own, so it depends on who you know.. People who didn't even know these people found some other ways to 'leg' their ways through.. My brother, except you want to deceive urself, it's a normal Nigerian syndrome. @OmolodMilkman93 Thanks bro.. My diary is down. I'll open a new one soon. |
Articul8: we can not compel every one to act like a nonentity because of wt happened to Fayemi in Ekiti. We cnt because d fear of nt re-elected now act irrationally. Even if he's nt going 2 b re-elected, let the truth be told first. Note: dnt mortgage ur future for mediocrityWell said.. |
^^This is wishful thinking. PDP is getting stronger by the hour in Ogun state. With the way he has treated OOU students, the support we gave him at the last election is surely going to PDP. We'll cajole all our family and friends to vote him out of office. APC has still not learnt from Fayemi. He put up more construction and bridges and still lost! I remain a neutral. Let him do the right thing at the right time to save 2015. |
CocoaMerchant: He's the best Governor in SOUTH WEST. |
django1: Do you live in Ogun? Because I don't, its only what I can get online that I post. So if you know about what's going on in that sector, post it.https://www.nairaland.com/1871391/open-letter-gov-ibikunle-amosun |
New reports has it that Gov Amosun wants to disband the present SUG. It won't work! |
Gov Amosun's first Agenda was quality and affordable education. Pls what do we have? |
eaglechild: Free free freeLike Amosun himself didn't have it free! |
comos: The reduction in school fees is APC agenda to gain votes. |
comos: Why is it when election is coming (after APC lost ekiti) he now chooses to reduce the school fees. |
ERC CONDEMNS CLOSURE OF OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY (OOU) Governor Amosun's Action is a Mockery of Democracy The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) condemns the forced closure of Olabisi OnabanjoUniversity (OOU) by the Ibikunle Amosun state government. We are equally opposed to the militarisation of the campus by the state government which was meant to demobilise the mass of students from organizing further planned mass actions against the fee hike. We demand the immediate reopening of the University and the meeting of all demands of students for substantial reduction in their hiked fees and improved funding of the University. According to press reports, the closure is to "forestall breakdown of law and order". This argument is ridiculous. It is also a mockery of democracy. By this closure, the message the state government is passing across is that once students disagree with a government policy, the consequence would be to be "labelled as threat to peace of the state", the closure of their campus and the disruption of their academics. Governor Ibikunle Amosun should check his language. In this era of boko haram terror, describing ordinary students and young people who are merely protesting for their rights as "threat to peace" is highly damaging to the image of these students who are the Nation's future and moreover, it is an insult to their parents. The real reason the State government closed down the University is to avoid meeting the demands of students for substantial reduction in their hiked fees to an amount not higher than N50, 000. To achieve this, the State government is trying to criminalize the students and prepare the ground for police arrests and other forms of victimisation. We like to remind the Ogun State Police Command that this is a democracy and the use of police to harrass students and ordinary Nigerians fighting for their legitimate right will not be tolerated. The ERC shall resist attempts by the Police to arrest, detain or victimise OOU students and their leaders in any way. The Amosun Government like all APC governments has elevated lying into a statecraft. The impression being deliberately created that students are violent is not true. Some weeks ago, the students protested peacefully to the Governors Office in Abeokuta. The first day of the protest, some hoodlums attacked the students while the police watched. The next day, the police fired tear gas at the students, arrested, slapped and brutalised the Vice President of the Students Union, Seliat Ogunbiyi. It was only when it became clear that the use of violence would not disperse the students that Governor Amosun now came down to discuss with the students. At the end of the parley, the Governor asked for a few days after which he would invite the students leaders to discuss how to resolve the issues. The students promptly dispersed and went back to their campus to await the Governor. If the students were really violent and could cause "breakdown of law and order", would it have been possible for the Governor to meet and parley with them? The ERC believes that the real threat to the peace of Ogun State is the anti-poor and dictatorial Amosun-led state government whose pro-rich, divisive and cynical policies on education have the capability not only to cause "breakdown of law and order" but also to mortgage the future of the youths. We hold that the forced closure of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) is a direct attack on the democratic rights of the mass of students. We call on the mass of students to remain resolute and dogged inspite of all these attacks. We demand the reversal of the closure of the university and for the the Ibikunle Amosun regime to meet the demands of the mass of students. We call on the leadership of the Students' union in the university to provide virile leadership to the mass of students by organizing mass meetings of students in main cities such as Abeokuta, Ago Iwoye, Ijebu-Ode and Lagos where the mass of students are concentrated. It is only by this approach that practical activities such as mass occupations and protests can be undertaken. It is equally through this approach that the struggle for the total reversal of the fee hike can be achieved. The ERC supports the struggle and demands of OOU students. The same way we backed students of the Lagos State University (LASU) to resist and ultimately defeat the Fashola anti-poor government fee hike, we shall support OOU students until the anti-poor and dictatorial Ibikunle Amosun-led government of Ogun State bows to the people's will. educationrightscampaign..com/2014/08/erc-condemns-closure-of-olabisi.html?spref=tw&m=1 |
olaolayink: because you want to state ur point must you call names?my mama raise me well more than that....now back to the topic, you said you pay between 200-300k per session.please correct me if I'm wrong, for the last 11years all the state own institution fee has been on d high side. I could remember very well that before ogd tenure in ogun state mapoly acceptance fee is 5k but during his regime, acceptance fee sky rocket to 25k5 and the school from 20-30k goes for 60-75k,say goes to oou, tasued,Igbesa poly and d rest.thus this present administration promise that he will look into it but fail too until after 3yrs in office but i think it's better to be late Dan never. You just nailed it. I'm sorry for the harsh words. Fact is we trusted him once and not again. Once bitten, twice shy! |
Sirniyeh: .I'm sorry for the harsh words. It's a byproduct of the anger I'm beaming with. I'm not the SUG president. But the Governor has fed the public with lies, I also want the public to hear our own side.. |
Abbycite: Lest we forget.........People want us to be grateful for reduction like normal person would do. But they failed to see how much suffering we have gone through. I remember a final year accounting student that wouldn't have graduated because of the fees. She went round begging for contributions, when she came to our house I wanted to cry. Yoruba says it's only you that understands where the shoe is injuring you or so. It's when you have a child in OOU or see someone begging for school fees, then you'll understand that it's the struggle of the poor and average. Amosun has played his politics, we have a voice that cannot be silenced, it's either he brings it down further or forget 2015! |
lanrefront1: @adeoladrg,The poster asked valid questions, and I replied also with valid questions no one has answered. The reduction was a gift from the government, true. But why now? Pls answer! Why didn't he effect the reduction immediately he resumed office? If you were around the Ago Iwoye-Sagamu area during the last election, then you'd have seen how this same SUG rallied and campaigned to have him in that office because of the reduction he promised. We feel cheated, we feel used. I'm sorry for using harsh words, it's just painful. We just feel he wants to use us again. Why isn't anyone looking at these plights? OOU students are this and that is inconsequential in this struggle. He's playing politics with us by announcing the reduction in 2014 instead of 2011 and we are angry. The fact that we are rough and threatened violence is just childish on the part of SUG, but then if you can answer my question you'd alleviated some anger! |
SLIDEwaxie: lolWhatever makes you sleep at night bro.. |
SLIDEwaxie: the reason why ur types are joining this protest is to have excess cash for beers, phones and other vanities!Envy isn't good for the soul. OOU boasts of one of the best law, pharmacy and medical schools in the country.. Mapoly offered you farming, apply logic! You can add tachypnea to your list of growing conditions! |
SLIDEwaxie: It is good to be properly informed.Uncle you can lie oo. Socialist led the delegate of OOU SUG comrades to Oke Imosan. Chaii, so you had to make this up out of been desperate. Amosun begged who? So this is the best Mapoly taught you, go to bed sir! |
SLIDEwaxie: bros, clean mouth and stop lying. I get business for OOU..See this small scale farmer coming here to spew trash! Whoever denied you proper education hasn't done too well. For the records, the lowest I know a department pays is about 150,000 which is chemistry department. Medical students pay over 300,000 pick up your phone and call anyone you know.. It's pharmacy that pays 250,000. Cesap is not even worthy of mention so I'm wondering why you want to die of tachycardia. The government announced 40% reduction, are you deaf or blind? Do the maths of 40% from 350 or 250,000! Where did these mapoly students get the 26,000 from? Kila gbe, kila ju? Would a sane person be told to pay so low and still protest? Pls just shatap and face your photocopy business! E go better! |
^^Elijah Ogundipe said: LaUTECH, UNIOSUN, AAUAkungba, are all state owned schools, and dey don't av resources whch Ogun state has.. but still none of the states are payin upto 150,000 talkless of 301,000. for instance aAUa, is payin as less as 10,000.. whch he (SIA) can't emulate... all what that matter is that, # bringdownoouschoolfees , or u forgt 2015. afteral, its our monie (the state tresure) u'r spending.. why is it hard or difficult for the state govt to reduce the fee to 50,000. |
Sirniyeh: .I'm sorry to have used those harsh words on you. But if you're rich enough to afford the fees for your wards, then leave the struggle to the average and stop accusing us of been ingrates! The governor reducing the fees was politically motivated, election-induced slashing of fees by 40%. If he had our wellbeing in mind, he'd have kept to his pre-election promises. As a concerned father, you should also be concerned about those children whose father's can't afford the exorbitant fees. Selfishness is deep in our blood, that's why we are where we are! Dare to struggle! |
Like I said on the other thread, you're devoid and starved of info on this matter. This is a common Nigerian syndrome and for that reason I'll spare your inanity! The average OOU student pays about 200,000 per session. Pharmacy students paying 252,000 this semester.. Medical students pay above 300,000. Do the mathematics sir! What would a 40% reduction give? So we'd be paying 29,000 and still be protesting? Are you this witless or you're making extra efforts today? Pls get yourself informed! |
^^ I'll take you as one of those Mapoly students, your words seem sensible. But you're bereft and devoid of enough information. Of all the 10 institutions in Ogun state, no other institution pays above a hundred thousand naira, so isn't it logical for them to smooch their grateful knees on the ground in appreciation? OOU pays between 200 to 300 thousand, medical students pay about 350 or thereabout. 40% reduction will amount to how much? Do the mathematics! Traditionally, public schools were structured such that it'll be affordable to the poor. Our primary and secondary schools still maintain that structure, it's only our university that has been manipulated. So don't come here to spew trash!! It'd amaze you to know ASUU is in support of this struggle.. Amosun dropped the bombshell some months ago, telling the university to fund itself.. It's there for you to see! So quietly go back to your polytechnic and mind your business! |
whatlyf: in my first comment I posited that I won't hold brief for the governor. But permit me to say that Amosun's first promise of N50,000(though still high) was nothing but a political statement and it is highly condemnable. It is clear that he had no idea(as at then) and had no plan on making the 50k feasible as at 2011. It is very shameful to say the least. Howeber, as an incumbent that has been in power for over 3years he has no excuse. Please just give him that benefit of doubt(and read my first comment). Leaders say things in campaign that they had no idea of.. Like obama that said hed close guatanamo bay in his 2008 campagn but till today the Prison still operates.See sir, protests have been the only worthy avenue to get what you want! And it's now or never.. Dare to struggle! Aluta continua.. |
" The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.- Martin Luther King, Jr." Fellow Oouites, Let me start by saying my not being on line recently is due to damaged device of mine. Without wasting time, I want to encourage you all for your dogged, rugged and peaceful spirit in this noble cause so far. The premise of shutting down the school by the Government is shallow and thoughtless. Let it be known that no other institutions in Ogun State apart from our school agitates for reduction in tuition fee from the beginning, because we pay the highest within the State and outside the State. Let me state this again, if we are just starting 2013/2014 session, and any reduction is made, logically, it is expected that it should take effect from that 2013/2014 session unlike other institutions within the State that are already ending that session. However, what we see is grand conspiracy between the Government and some student' leaders of other institutions against us. Let me implore you all, collectively we starts, collectively we must stay as leaving the school will amount to giving in to the Government tactics. We must remain resolute on our position no matter the intimidation and victimization. Contrary to paid media houses, our agitation and protest has been peaceful even when some paid Mapoly students came to attack us and vandalized some properties, all to run down our peaceful agitation. I implore you all to be calm as consultation is ongoing. Let me end by saying, he who see the truth and desire not to accept it will always have excuse, no matter how flimsy it is. This perfectly suites the external influence the Government is panting our demands. We are getting there! Thank you. Aluta continua ! Victoria ascerta! E soleto E africa! Signed. Ifade Olusegun (Socialist) OOU SUG President |
