OOU CAMPUS SHUTDOWN: Our Governor Has Gone Mad Again When an unconfirmed report got across to me from a source within the corridor of power in Ogun State on Friday night, about the plan to lock down the school. I sincerely found it very hard to believe. But, upon hearing the SSG's press release yesterday, it was then dawn on me that my source was right. I then started to imagine if we were still in a democratic setting of governance or we've returned to the military style overnight, unaware to Ogunians. This can also be termed as THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF AMOSUN's REIGN IN OGUN SCHOOL's CAMPUSES. Only in lastweek, after a 2-days, massive but peaceful protest in Abeokuta, demanding a reduction in our school fees. The state governor met with us and promised to make justice to our demands, within d next 7-days. Now, we can see his 'purported justice' to our demands. OOUITES ASKED FOR FISH, AMOSUN GAVE US A SERPENT...OOUITES ASKED FOR SCHOOL FEES REDUCTION, HE GAVE US CAMPUS SHUTDOWN. The action of the governor is myopic, mundane and illogical, putting in consideration the trends of political leadership style, in the 21st century. I can only but sympathise with the so called progressive political party that has given this man the priviledge to be their Governor and misbehave to this extent without any precaution, even as the 2015 General Elections is just 6 Months closer. I can truly see them winning again...Pipe dream! The threat to my life, together with some other gallant comrades in Cdhr cannot be a STOP to the Monday 'Ali-Must-Go' kind of protest. At this crucial junction, Let Amosun and his apologist be quick to note that it is only God who can arrest or kill. Let them rain threats and blackmail, from now till kingdom comes, it'll never stop us. We are poised to fight for our right. Let no OOUITE travel, we are bound to fight this together. Com. Governor Chairman, Fee Reduction Frontier Committee Committee For The Defence of Human Rights, OOU. |
Whatlyf: i understand your positions but you should further probe as to why the government decided to make the fee effective next academic session before crucifying the working government of Amosun Brother, I understand your position too. Instead you should probe why he promised we weren't going to pay anything above 50,000 naira if he got elected. Once bitten bro, twice shy!!! They know how to adjust the budgets if they want to. Also probe why the governor deceived us last week. Why he asked for a week to look into our demands but instead used that one week to plan the closure of the school. |
Sarah Dessen wisely said: “There are some things in this world you rely on, like a sure bet. And when they let you down, shifting from where you’ve carefully placed them, it shakes your faith, right where you stand.” Closely observing the 2011 elections, I was particularly not interested in voting even if I was eligible to. I’m the type who would rather listen to what a wide range of people had to say about a topic or person before drawing my inference. The blind could vividly see, the deaf could also clearly hear the plights of the people of Ogun state. Everyone was tired of the Gbenga Daniel’s Administration. Left, right and center was all bad news and unhearable tantrums by the former governor. My heart sunk, my spirit prayed for change, my soul yearned in hope, my body agitated in anger and fury. It was Gbenga against Governor Amosun. Still green in my cerebral cortex was that moment of jubilation that evening, I just woke up from sleep to the news that Senator Ibikunle Amosun is the Governor-elect of Ogun State. I picked up the JAMB form where I chose to study at Olabisi Onabanjo University and glared my bulbus oculi on it with joy properly triturated with hope. He promised to reduce OOU fees if elected. That meant my single mum wasn’t going to cough out too much money to get me educated. I just sensed a feeling that everything was going to be alright, only if I knew. Fast forward 2014, it was a different game on the streets. Partisans and market women commended the governor for the road repairs.Taxi drivers also sang his praises. Indeed, it was immense and worthy of praise. As my good friend likes to say, “Governor Amosun has a penchant for bridges”. Space won’t permit me to begin to list the roads and bridges, but it’s there for us to see. Well done sir. Senator Ibikunle Amosun becoming Governor was also good news to Olabisi Onabanjo University. If no one would admit, I humbly would. First, the corrupt VC was done away with and Prof Saburi Adesanya was installed. This alone spelt complete sanity to OOU's environments and academics. But then with all these, I still had to put up with the fees. Having to pay 204,500 naira in 2011 was hard to swallow but since no one was talking about it, I kept mute. The next session had to take 212,000 naira from my mother’s purse and I could barely imagine how I had been slapped. Alexander Pope correctly said, “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed”. To cut the long story short. Fast forward July 2014. I already started classes for the new session, and with the heavy fees sitting on my mind like a rich man relaxing on his couch I always put Divine provision in my prayers. Suddenly, on getting the news on the fees reduction to take effect next session by Governor Amosun, I wasn’t moved. I knew it was time for elections and he would need to score few political points, I passed it over and considered it as a speculation. I wasn’t going to be disappointed again! OOU SUG then announced a 2-day boycott of lectures before going to negotiate with the governor, all efforts proved abortive. Then I thought just like Wande Coal sang ‘Shey na like this e go dey dey?’ My heart rejoiced at the peaceful demonstrations by the Ifade Onisegun led SUG, to demand further reduction and immediate implementation. A paroxysm of hope held my hands. Once again, You came out to claim you weren’t aware we were in our first semester, asked for a week and promised to set up a committee to see to that effect. I was happy again, lectures resumed normally, high expectations met with hopeful myopia. Only if we knew! The greatest shock came on the expiration of the 7 days you asked for at Abeokuta. You ordered the Governing council of the school to close down the school. You also sent loads of Policemen into the school environment to arrest student leaders. I have the following questions to ask sir, was this how Sir Obafemi Awolowo treated you when you were in school? The third governor of Ogun state who built this university, Olabisi Onabanjo in his grave must be colossally saddened by the way you have played down on his sweat and toils to make sure Ogun state youths get quality and cheap education. The labours of our heroes past we always sing, shall never be in vain! These great people gave you free education, why have you, like King Solomon decided to put the burden on us? Yes, the question comes, you were not the one who hiked the fees, but the truth remains you promised to lighten our burdens if elected. You promised we weren't going to pay anything above 50,000 naira if elected. Why have you reneged on your promise? Why have you ordered the arrest of our student leaders to have us helpless and hopeless? Why would you treat Ogun state youths like some pack of cards? Sir, your Rebuild Agenda at the 2011 election had five cardinal points, first of which was ‘Affordable and Quality Education’. Where is the affordable and quality education sir? You have deceived us and have gone too far. The voice of the people is the voice of God! Let us get this straight sir, History has it about the Indomitable spirit of OOUites. If there’s any school that’ll quiver or tremor at your tantrums, trust me sir it’d never be OOU. Ask Olusegun Osoba, ask Samuel Ewang! Moreover, I’m sure you were moved at the crowd you saw at the last protest, that’s why you called it opposition sponsored. Hehe, you haven’t seen anything yet! We know all you care about is the election next year and we are ready to play it dirty. We would show the world how you’ve destroyed the sweat of Sir Olabisi Onabanjo. Fire gunshots at us sir, we don’t care! Arrest and imprison us sir, our CVs won’t be complete without it. Let the threats come in, we’ve had enough and have come too far to compromise. We’ve crossed the rubicon! Deprive us of whatever, it's part of the struggle. Sir, I honestly submit you need to have a rethink. The Proactive decisions made by Gov. Fashola has been recorded in the books of history and how you resolve this issue might just determine where history will place you. Moreso, I'm starting to get the hibis jibis of your irreparable decision. Just know ONE thing at this crucial stage sir, we do not accept the closure of our school as you have acted within the confines of your power. You must have read about John Castor, the student leader who said 'We either revolt or die!'. We won't stop! We won't bend! On Affordable and Quality Education we stand and for as long as possible, ALUTA MUST CONTINUA, VICTORIA ASCERTA. Concerned OOUite. Rx Robinho |

Amosun Ordered The Arrest Of OOU and other Ogun State Student Leaders In his desperate moves to prevent the reoccurrence of the embarrassing protests of Ogun state students happening again on Monday 25th of August, Governor Amosun has ordered for the arrest of the following student leaders wherever they are found in the state. They are: 1. Com. Socialist (sug president), 2. Seliat (sug vp), 3. Com. James ( oou Cdhr coordinator), 4. Com. Governor (Chairman, Fee Reduction Committee), 5. Com. Awo (Director, Mobilization NANS), 6. Com. Kmoney (NAOSS Presidential Aspirant), 7. Com. Korea (Cdhr comrade) 8. COM DADA AYODEJI 9. COM SAHEED SIKIRU DEP SENATE PRESIDENT AND, 10. COM FALOLA AHMED NANS CHAIRMAN OGUN STATE Six days ago when over 3,000 students of OOU, Ago Iwoye and other schools in the state peacefully protested against the recent reduction in their tuition by the state government, Governor Amosun promised to look into their demands within one week and proper reduction will be announced after. Amosun said he was hearing for the first time that the students are still in their 2013/14 academic session. The demands of the students are; infrastructural development in their schools to justify the huge money they are paying. Secondly, the school fees reductions must be in tandem with the promise of the governor during campaigns. Amosun pledged to peg the highest paid tuition in ogun state to N50,000 if elected into office. It's three years now and no reduction was done. Rather, the school fees in the state was increased by 100% and later reduced by 10%. Six months to election, Amosun announced an across the board reductions that made caricature of what he promised. Ogun state school fees are still the highest in the country. Why is Amosun after the lives of these gallant students? Why is Amosun reneging on his promise to look into their demand if all he planned was to get them all arrested and jailed? Why is Amosun so silent on the statement credited to Odubela? ALUTA CONTINUA!!! |
GodofGrace: FREE ADVICE TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN do not go to abeokuta to protest in ur own interest if u realy love ur life, because d studnt leadeer are unreasonable WHYIf there's any set of students that'll be scared with Amosun's threat, trust me! they can never be OOU students! We know what is on ground and are already making strategies. Once we can enter Abeokuta, that's the end! Just watch! |
thegreatman4ww: OOU then OSU has been known for decades for students and internal crisis, a school where student take pride in riot and violence than academic work. Since mid 90s no student ever graduted at his/her normal year of graduation without adding at least 2yrs more due to closure of school and violence with d school, the community and state.Egbon, e gbagbe history!! Don't we have the right to cheap education also? I have a single mom, sending the 5 boys my dad left behind to school.. I've paid over 200K for 2 sessions, where did you put the fear of God? Why is the focus on the students this time? The governor announced a 40% reduction to be effected next year, we took a peaceful protest to Abeokuta last week demanding a further reduction and implementation this year! The governor came out to address us, asked us to give him a week claiming he didn't know we were in our first semester. He said he was going to set up a committee to look into it. We did, buh we were deceived. Gov Amosun has played his game on us, ordered the school to be closed down and put Policemen on the streets to fire at anyone who attempts at protesting.. Can't a middle-class Homo sapien send his ward to school again? When it's not a private school!! It's now or never!! Aluta continua!! |
MyIncorp: I think the student exceeded their limits this time. If the Governor had been magnanimous enough to reduce the school fees and to take effect in the new session, why are the students not patient.I have a church member who studied Pharmacy at OOU and payed btw 15-30k for tuition. Now, I'm studying Pharmacy at OOU, Payed 212k for 100 level, payed 204K for 200 level. Now, I'm to pay 212k again.. Fear God now!! He reduced it by 40% and said it will take effect next session.. We are not fools nw! It must go down further and now!!!! |
smartchoice: Government reduced fees these rascals are still fermenting trouble.... Close that school for two years joor our amiable governor..... SIA lekansi!U're one of the few people I respect on NL.. Smh.. |
NEWS OOU Also today, some students called me to note that the commissioner for education was calling OOUites ill-bred children of dysfunctional homes on Faaji fm. Well if agitating for your right peacefully makes you an ill bred child from a dysfunctional home, then I have two answers only for the commissioner. 1. Olamide (badoo) in one of his songs says ‘‘Ode ni won like’’ meaning it’s a fool that they like (we are no fools like your own children who gets everything handed down to them and cannot survive on their own, most of us work very hard for every penny we spend, especially on our school fees) 2. I think you are the ill-bred one, because it is your generation that fought government for reducing the size of chicken in your meal at the government universities in those days. We are not even agitating for chicken or any such thing, all that we want is that your government should be manly enough to fulfil all the promises it made freely with the masses and not wait for the masses to march on governments office before fulfilling its promises, because a real man’s bond is his word. Having failed to live up to its responsibility and fulfilled the promise made to us last week as a government, I am using this medium to implore all OOUites that as we await the signal for movement from the leadership of the students’ union ably led by our ever dynamic comrade Ifade Olusegun Olugbenga aka Socialist, that all students should start preparing to storm the governors’ office en- mass on Monday and be prepared to stay there for as long as it will take for the government to attend to our issues. If you can make it to Abeokuta on Sunday, please do as I envisage the government unleashing every security apparatus at its disposal on us to stop us from getting to Abeokuta like they did to some of our people last week. Therefore, I implore you all to bring along your toothbrush, your sanitary wares, your sweater, torchlight, extension sockets, thick socks, water bucket, food plates and every other basic amenities needed for survival during a camping exercise. I want reiterate to the student that we shall maintain the peaceful posture that we did last week and to forestall government paid local stations from making a mess of our protest like OGTV did last week, we are making efforts to bring on board Yvonne Ndege Aljazeera network, Deji Bademosi of CCTV news, the CNN reporter in Lagos and a host of other international journalists and broadcasting stations as well as some of our local stations who are known for fair and balanced reportage of events to the scene. We are also using this medium to call on the minister of interior, the minister of state for defence and other federal government parastatals in charge of security in the country to help us call all military and paramilitary security forces to order, as a situation whereby tear gas cannons and bullet will be shot directly at our students will not be acceptable at all and we will not take it lying low this time around. But we hope we will have a cordial rapport in our effort to press home our demands to the government while you are allowed to do your duties within the ambit of the law. Because we are not out to cause mayhem, we are only going to be out to peacefully demand for our rights from the government. Dare to struggle!!! Dare to win!!! Aluta continua!!! Victoria ascerta!!! SUG says: Greatest OOU Students! Please don't travel o. The Ogun State Government has beaten the drums of war and they must dance to its tune. If you travel home at this point, you will come back when they re-open the school to pay the same fees or even higher fees. This is the most crucial stage, wait for updates on next line of action. Make no mistake about it, we will fight this and win. A million Amosuns cannot stop us. CDHR OOU |
Ogun Shuts Onabanjo Varsity to Maintain Peace To forestall breakdown of law and order, Ogun State Government has directed the Governing Council of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, to close down the university immediately. The government also advised all parents whose wards are students of the university to immediately call them to order as the government will not tolerate any act that will disturb the peace being enjoyed by the people of the state. In a statement signed by Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, Secretary to State Government, the decision to shut the university was taken in the overall interest of peace and order as the students of the university have continued to issue threats while rejecting all entreaties and concessions made by the government on their various demands concerning the recently announced reduction of school fees. The government had on August 12 after extensive deliberations involving the leadership of the student unions in the 10 state-owned tertiary institutions, heads of the institutions and government representatives, announced reductions in school fees by as high as 61 percent. The government also abolished the indigene/non-indigene dichotomy in the school fees regime and announced the 2014-2015 academic session as commencement period for the policy. However, while students in nine of the ten institutions commended the government for its decisions, OOU students insisted that the new school fees regime should take effect from the 2013/2014 academic session and that the fees should be further reduced. The OOU students premised their position on the fact that they are currently running the 2013-2014 academic session which will end in January. They also rejected the fact presented by students of other institutions that they are also in the same situation as some of them will only be concluding the 2013-2014 session in December. The government had also sought to convince the students that it could not afford to bear the financial implication of commencing the implementation of the new school fees regime as it will cost the government over N2 billion. OOU students staged a violent demonstration in the state capital on August 15 and it took the personal intervention of the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun to restore normalcy. The governor thereafter set up an ad-hoc committee to discuss with the students with a view to resolving the situation. During discussions with the ad-hoc committee, OOU students maintained their stand that the fees must be further reduced and that the implementation must commence immediately. The explanation that no other State in Nigeria is saddled with the responsibility of funding 10 tertiary institutions and that to accede to their request would mean natural death for the institutions made no sense to them. The student leaders were within the week sending text messages round, urging their colleagues ‘to get ready for action’ as they are ready to unleash violence on the state capital. Security reports have since confirmed that because the students are acting under external influence, no concession made by the government will be satisfactory to them. “Consequently, we have no option than to order the immediate closure of all the campuses of Olabisi Onabanjo University to protect the students and other residents of the state and their property. We urge all parents to impress on their wards the need to maintain peace in the interest of all”, Adeoluwa stated. Signed Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa Secretary to State Government |
