Most Nigerians do not have an iota of saving culture, hence they tend to consume a good chunk of their disposable income within a very short period of time. Anyways, i see no reason why they should protest tho |

YemziAdez: I'm a graduate of Animal and Environmental Biology
School: UNIBEN
Waiting for NYSC posting too.
Well I'm fortunate to be selected by a Dr. at the moment as a research assistant.
Since I've graduated (July, 2016), I've only spent a week with my parents in Lagos.
What gave me a little advantage over my peers is that I've narrowed down my research interests into two or more branches of researches viz. Insect Ecology, Insect toxicology, invasion biology and pest control.
In addition, I developed my research skills to a little extent by reading lots of scientific journals.
Kindly send me a pm if you need more information.
Warm regards. wow, i'm also a UNIBEN student but in my finals though. I also work as a Research assistant apprentice with a Dr. in my department presently. Would love to venture into lecturing based on my great affinity for Research and also imparting knowledge. However, i may not further my studies here. |

jamebex: If you are currently on 4.09 CGPA, I will advice that you put in all effort necessary to finish well above it. Graduate schools places more weight on your grade in the last 60 credit courses. In simple terms, aim for 5.0 GPA in your remaining semesters. This may seem impossible, but it is achievable and I know you can do it.
This, perhaps may be the single most important thing you will do to significantly help your graduate school application. The experience you get will come in handy when you start writing your statement of purpose, and will also serve as your research experience. Also the relationship you build from this will help greatly when you need letter of recommendations.
Like someone has suggested, approach them and discuss your graduate school plans with them, you'd be amazed at how helpful they might be. I for example in my finals, approached one of my lecturer who was completing his Phd and told him about my plans . I was really surprised by how receptive he was. He immediately took me on and started sending me to do little task like printing documents, then asking me to go and source for primary literature for the work and to the point of actually helping to proofread the work itself. In the end I gained not only the experience but also a wonderful relationship which continued even after graduation. So I urge you to do this.
I personally don't buy into this safe school ish. For Masters maybe, but for Phd NOOOOOOO, Phd is for 5 (FIVE ) freaking years, it is not something you apply for just because you think a school is safe. Please apply to a Phd program because the research going on there is top notch and you'd be happy doing it for 5 to 6 years.
Refer to my first response and you'd have no reason to worry about this. Thanks for this enlightenment . God bless you. |

pennstate: 1). Have you gotten a supervisor yet, if YES, summon the courage to work up to him and discuss your plans (you may not tell him that you r going to the US for a PhD after graduation for now) with him. Tell him/her that you will like to publish some papers with him/her in order to gain research experience. 2). No idea 3) Your 4.0GPA should be somewhere 3.4/3.5. I'm yet to have a project supervisor. But nevertheless, I'll definitely discuss my future plans with whoever amongst them ends up to become my supervisor. Thank you so much sir. I'm so grateful. |

Good day house. I've been following this thread for about 2-3 months now and I must say, the information I get from here are invaluable and priceless. I'm an undergraduate of Economics and Statistics (in my finals), currently on a CGPA of 4.09/5.0, I however estimated my CGPA to be around 4.0 after graduation. I intend to apply and sit for the GRE immediately after my last exam next year June or July, then start working on my pursuit of a funded PhD program for either GTA or GRA. 1) In order to boost my chances of getting admitted for a PhD program, I'm thinking of meeting one of my lecturers here as regards working on a research work with him or any of his colleagues. But I sincerely do not know how to approach him , maybe it's because of my inability to build a personal relationship with any of them. 2) Although I'm yet to make any constant decision pertaining to the area of Economics I'll be specializing on, but I'd love the experienced folks in the house to please help me out with some safe institutions where a potential Economics/Statistics Phd student would not only be admitted but also get funded easily. 3) Is it possible for a CGPA within the range of 4.0-4.1 to be evaluated to 3.5/4.0 by WES ? Lastly, I've started working towards obtaining an amazing score from the GRE especially the Quant aspect. Downloaded about 90% of the required study materials, silently following this thread, quora, magoosh site, plus studying the official GRE texts ( at a very slow and steady pace for now tho). I thank you all once again as I earnestly expect your answers to my seemingly "naive" questions. |

thanta: What were the questions like ?... Or when do they do the exams The questions are basically IQ test, Business/finance, Verbal reasoning and GMAT kind of quantitative. There are 30 questions in all and it lasts for 45minutes. There's no specific day for the exam because it will be an online test, hence, eligible candidates would be allowed to take the test within a time frame (usually a month or two). As regards when the exam will be done; last year's application commenced around mid-december and they started Shortlisting in February. So I presume they'll start two months from now.

I don't really think there's a tip per se, most of these scholarships are won by a bit of luck and some other factors beyond our control. Albeit, I'd advise you to practice with GMAT if you eventually get shortlisted and also reach out to two or more of your "intellectually sound" friends on the D-day since there'd be no INVIGILATORs , . Criteria for selection are highly dynamic, nobody knows the exact covert criterion they apply. However, we all know the paramount basis for selection which is studying one of the courses amongst the listed eligible courses. |
