BusinessCBN, NNPC, FIRS And National Budget by AdexUpdates(op): 7:42am On Jan 13, 2019
GMD NNPC, Baru
Attempts to remove, by administrative procedures, the autonomy and independence, which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) enjoys by virtue of Section 1(3) of its Act of 2007 may have surfaced, after all.
And this is curious at this time when the economy is facing some stress and global attention.
The other day, the Director General, Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze, was reported to have stated at a Town Hall held in Abuja with chief executives of government-owned enterprises that, budgets of revenue generating agencies of the federal government would soon be captured in the national budget.
Such agencies he mentioned included the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
adduced reason for the move according to Mr. Akabueze is the need to stop the current practice of sending separate budgets (of the revenue generating agencies/federal government owned enterprises) to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.
Much as it may be desirable to have a consolidated annual national budget presented to the National Assembly in the form the Budget Office of the Federation and of course, the Federal Ministry of Finance that supervises its operations and planning, it behoves the government to exercise.....

CrimeBoko Haram: How Nigerian Soldier Killed 14 Terrorist Before He Was Killed by AdexUpdates(op): 4:35am On Jan 11, 2019
Boko Haram insurgents may have been gaining ground recently in their onslaughts against the Nigerian Military, but the deaths of soldiers in battle are usually laden with untold stories of the heroics of Nigerian troops. Report now found out from a firsthand witness, when Boko Haram raided the Army’s base in Monguno, Borno State, in the last week of 2018, the soldier who was killed, lost his life in the most heroic of circumstances — and not until he had killed at least 14 Boko Haram insurgents.

“We were on ground when Boko Haram surprised us with a strike,” a soldier who escaped the attack unhurt told SaharaReporters on Thursday.
“The first thing we did was to run for cover. We ran until we arrived a location fenced with transparent barbed wire. The place was locked.”
The soldier driving the vehicle disembarked and fired at the padlock, paving the way for others to charge through the gate and run until they got to a parapet — “a straight, deep hole that you can take cover in” — where the assailants were hiding in their dozens.
“The Boko Haram insurgents were hiding inside,” said the soldier.

BusinessChina’s Bytedance To Challenge Facebook by AdexUpdates(op): 9:36am On Jan 07, 2019
ByteDance, the world’s most valuable venture capital–backed startup, is on a collision course with Facebook. I predict that the Chinese upstart will start competing head-to-head with Facebook for ad dollars in India and Southeast Asia, and will start nibbling even in the U.S., as it makes inroads with the app formerly known as Musical.ly.
Still largely unknown outside of China, ByteDance has created a string of blockbuster apps in China that use sophisticated modeling and machine learning to deliver a stream of tailored content to its users, including jokes, news articles and short, silly video clips. With Musical.ly, the U.S. lip-sync video app ByteDance acquired last year, the Chinese media firm has taken the formula overseas.
The Takeaway
China’s ByteDance will begin to compete with Facebook for advertising revenue next year in India and Southeast Asia, The Information’s Shai Oster predicts.
Think of it as Facebook’s newsfeed, or Instagram, minus the social network or.
