Pioneer chairman of the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu,
has returned to the All Progressives Congress.
Ribadu confirmed the move in a statement,
which was published on his Facebook page.
“I have finally heeded the calls on me to
return to the All Progressives Congress, a
party of which I was a founding member,” he
said.
The ex-EFCC chair, who in 2014 left the Action
Congress of Nigeria which later merged with
the Congress for Progressive Change to form
the APC, said he joined the ruling party on
Thursday. “I re-registered as a member of the APC on
Thursday through the party’s online portal.
After that, the leadership of the party in my
Bako ward of Yola South Local Government
Area visited me in my Yola residence to
welcome me back to their fold,” the former
ACN presidential aspirant said.
“My decision to return to the APC was
triggered by my believe that all politics are
local. Almost everyone around me, and with
whom we started my political journey
believed the time had come for us to make
sacrifices and make concessions.
“That is in addition to the unbelievable love
that my friends in the APC have showered on
me in the past months.” Ribadu, who had joined the Peoples
Democratic Party in a bid to contest the
governorship election for Adamawa State,
attributed his departure from the APC to
“fundamental disagreements with the ways
the chapter of the party in my state was run
after it fell into some hands”.
He explained that his return to the APC was
influenced by events in the last 15 months,
which “have addressed many of the issues
and healed some of the wounds” as well as
“the genuine and sincere invitations I
received since last year to retrace my steps
into the party”. http://punchng.com/breaking-nuhu-ribadu-returns-apc/ |

THE Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Friday expressed its displeasure on Thursday's Court of Appeal decision, allowing Muslim female students to wear Hijab in government funded schools. A statement signed by Secretary, Rev. Israel Akinadewo said Lagos State is a cosmopolitan state, in which the development and peace, all have witnessed over the years, have been majorly because of the good relationship between Christian and Muslim leadership, and their cooperation with successive governments. "Some of these public schools are missionary schools, bearing Christian names, hence any implementation of this judgement is tantamount to islamizing the state of excellence," he said. According to the statement, Christian and Muslim leaders are both members of Nigeria InterReligious Council (NIREC) in Lagos, and "we have worked perfectly well together. We can only appeal to the State government to take all legal steps immediately, in reversing this judgement, before the Mega City vision for Lagos State is destroyed through religious extremism. "There should be a standard dress code for all, to be made public for all students who attend public schools in Lagos State. Tax payers monies are used for the establishment and running of these schools, hence religious dress codes should not be allowed under any circumstance. This is even with the fact that religious bodies can establish private schools, and the demands of their religion can then be effectively implemented." http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/hijab-can-disappointed-appeal-court-ruling/ |

The United States government says it has no
information on the alleged crimes committed
by President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife,
Aisha.
The acting Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate
General, Lagos, Frank Sellin, said this in an
email sent to our correspondent on Tuesday.
Sellin said this in response to an enquiry
made by our correspondent regarding
allegations that the President’s wife was
wanted in the US and was avoiding travelling
to the country. In a message, Sellin said, “Thank you for the
inquiry. We have no information to provide
on this matter.”
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, had,
last month, alleged that Mrs. Buhari was
involved in the $185m Halliburton scandal.
While reacting to the freezing of his Zenith
Bank accounts by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, Fayose claimed that the
wife of the President was a wanted person in
the US.
He had said, “Even the President cannot claim
to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is
known to us. His wife was indicted in the
Halliburton scandal.
“When that American, Jefferson, was being
sentenced, the President’s wife was
mentioned as having wired $170,000 to
Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the
sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialise the
judgment for people to see and read.”
Fayose repeated the claim in a statement by
his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi. He
said Aisha refused to travel with the President
to the US because of her involvement in the
scandal. http://punchng.com/no-fraud-information-buharis-wife-us/ |

Britain decided to join the 2003 invasion of Iraq based on "flawed intelligence" which was not challenged and should have been, a long- awaited report has found. John Chilcot, the chairman of the Iraq Inquiry and a retired civil servant, said on Wednesday that the invasion went "badly wrong". "Military action in Iraq might have been necessary at some point, but in March 2003, there was no immediate threat from [then Iraq President] Saddam Hussein," he said. The 2.6 million-word Iraq Inquiry - which took seven years to prepare - was published in full on Wednesday. It can be accessed online . Speaking 30 minutes before the official publication, Chilcot said: "The UK chose to join the invasion of Iraq before the peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted." Chilcot said that, despite explicit warnings, the consequences of the invasion were underestimated. Responding to the report, former Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a press conference on Wednesday that he "accept[ed] full responsibility without exception and without excuse" for the decision to go to war in Iraq, but insisted that the world "is in a better place without Saddam Hussein". "There was no rush to war," Blair declared. "There were no lies. There was no secret commitment to war." He also said that he made the decision because "it was the right thing to do based on the information I had". He said his mistake was in the "planning and process" following the invasion. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and at least 179 British soldiers were killed during the eight-year conflict. Investigators also found the planning and preparations for Iraq after Hussein was overthrown were wholly inadequate, said Chilcot, who had not been asked to rule on the legality of the invasion. "The people of Iraq have suffered greatly," Chilcot said. In response to report, the White House said US President Barack Obama has been "dealing with the consequences" of the decision to invade Iraq that he opposed. Speaking from Baghdad, Ahmed Rushdi, Iraqi political analyst, said that the report reminded him of his previous statement, that "Tony Blair is a liar". "He lied to the British people. He lied to the international community ... he lied on every level". "In the end, what happened in 2003, made us in a position that Iraqis must take the blame of what happened in 2003." Rushdi said that it was the responsibility of the "invaders" to consider the consequences of war. "It's only go to Iraq, invade Iraq, destroy the infrastructure, destroy the nationality of all the Iraqis," without a clear post-war plan, he said. Al Jazeera's Neave Barker, reporting from London, said: "[Chilcot's remarks were] about as damning as you can possibility get without explicitly saying that war in Iraq was illegal." Tony Blair responds Blair was the UK's prime minister at the time of the US-led invasion, and strongly supported joining Britain's key ally. The Chilcot report concluded that Blair "set the UK on a path leading to diplomatic activity in the UN and the possibility of participation in military action in a way that would make it very difficult for the UK subsequently to withdraw its support for the US." As Chilcot addressed media at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in west London, anti-war protesters gathered outside. Before Britain entered the war 13 years ago, at least one million people marched in the capital against a military invasion. Jack Straw: Haunted by the Iraq war? Current Prime Minister David Cameron, of the ruling Conservative Party, said the government needed to learn the lessons from what went wrong in the build-up to Britain's joining the invasion of Iraq. He added that he has put in place steps to avoid similar problems. "Military intervention is always difficult, planning for the aftermath of intervention, that is always difficult and I don't think in this House we should be naive in any way that there's a perfect set of plans ... that can solve these problems in perpetuity." 'Never again' The families of British troops killed in the Iraq conflict said Britain should use the Chilcot report to ensure the country never made such grave mistakes again. In a statement, a group of families who had access to the report's executive summary said that "never again must so many mistakes be allowed to sacrifice British lives and lead to the destruction of a country for no positive end". The sister of one killed serviceman, Sarah O'Connor, said the report confirmed there was one "terrorist" that the world needed to know about, "and that is Tony Blair". The military families have long pushed for the inquiry and for those responsible for Britain's involvement to be held accountable. The Iraq Inquiry has been repeatedly delayed, in part by wrangling over the inclusion of classified material, including conversations between Blair and former US President George W Bush. Some of Blair's pre-war letters to the US president are published in Chilcot's report, but not Bush's replies. The report was released as Iraq reeled from the deadliest attack since the 2003 invasion. Early on Sunday, a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged lorry in Baghdad's Karada district as it teemed with shoppers before the holiday marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, sparking infernos in nearby buildings. At least 250 people died in the blast , including many children and women. The bombing was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS). http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/07/chilcot-report-uk-exhaust-peaceful-options-160706091456264.html |

They were also to present evidence of tax clearance in the state. Also admitted to bail with the same conditions is one Danjuma Yusuf, who is standing trial along with other accused persons. Joined as the 4th defendant in the suit is a company, Joint Trust Dimension Nigeria Limited. The accused persons were on June 28, 2016, arraigned before Justice Hassan on 17 counts of conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering. Fani-Kayode, who was the Director of Media and Publicity for the Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidential Campaign Organisation in the 2015 election, was accused of conspiring with the others to directly and indirectly retain various sums, which the EFCC claimed they ought to have reasonably known were proceeds of theft. The accused persons were said to have allegedly committed the offences between January 8, 2015 and March 25, 2015, in the build-up to the general elections. Delivering his ruling on their bail applications on Monday, Justice Hassan held that there was no evidence that the accused would interfere with trial if granted bail. He noted that denying the accused persons bail, especially as the courts prepared for holiday, would not serve the interest of justice. Accordingly, he admitted the first, second, and third accused persons to a bail in the sum of N250m each with two sureties each in like sum. In one of the counts, the EFCC alleged that Fani-Kayode, who it listed as the 2nd defendant in the charge sheet, and his co- defendants conspired among themselves to “indirectly retain the sum of N1,500,000,000.00, which sum you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.” The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, had told the court that the said conspiracy and indirect retention of the N1.5bn constituted an offence under Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012, and punishable under Section 15(3)( 4) of the same Act. In another count, the EFCC alleged that Fani- Kayode “directly retained the sum of N350m,” which the anti-graft agency claimed he ought to have “reasonably known formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.” Fani-Kayode was accused of directly using parts of the money at various times, including between March 20 and 25, 2015, when he allegedly used N250,650,000.00 out of the money. Fani-Kayode was also accused of making a cash transaction of N24m with one Olubode Oke, said to still be at large, on February 12, 2015, to “Paste Poster Co of 125, Lewis Street, Lagos Island.” The duo were said to have made the transaction without going through any financial institution, an act the EFCC claimed was contrary to sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 16(2) (b) of the same Act. Justice Hassan adjourned till October 19, 2016, for the prosecution to open its case. http://punchng.com/arms-cash-fani-kayode-ex-minister-usman-others-get-n1bn-bail/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
