Politics / An Open Letter To The People Of Akwa Ibom State by adook1: 11:45am On Jun 13, 2011
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF AKWA IBOM STATE

WHY DOES DR. GODSWILL AKPABIO WANT ME DEAD?

On the day of the 2011 Governorship election, my attention was drawn to a publication entitled, “Withdrawal from Akwa Ibom State Gubernatorial Race As Deputy Governorship Candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria (A.C.N).” The publication dated April 22, 2011 with a false signature against my name was purported to have emanated from my desk and addressed to my Annang brothers and sisters. I have published the fake document on the left for the readers’ reference.

This came as a shock to me because there was never a time I contemplated abandoning the mass movement of the Akwa Ibom people determined to bring the much-desired change in our dear state. I never authored the publication. I never signed it. It was part of the antics of Dr. Godswill Akpabio’s campaign organization to rig the election.

The pamphlet was cooked up and distributed by Dr. Godswill Akpabio and the PDP who were jittery of the formidable Action Congress of Nigeria’s synergy in the state that was inexorably poised to reverse the evil and deceptive government of Godswill Akpabio. Aniekan Umanah, the State Hon. Commissioner for Information and his agents were seen distributing the pamphlets in the morning of the election day in all the polling units in Annang land made up of eight Local Government Areas. This was one of the tricks employed by a desperate Akpabio to rig the election. Despite the restriction of movement on that day, it was Ubong Emmanuel Umanah, younger brother to the same Aniekan Umanah that led about 14 vehicles loaded with thugs to my village, Ikot Obioko with the aim of mowing down all opposition.

Our saving grace was the presence of soldiers from the Army’s 6th Battalion, Ibagwa and policemen of Mopol 26 and 57 and the SSS officer in-charge of Abak Local Government Area who were present! The SSS officer addressed the thugs and told them to leave the village. The aim of the war brought to my village was to kill me and blame it on political thuggery.

That attempt failed. But the evil ones are unrelenting. Recently, the rumour making the rounds is that some people jumped into my compound in the village and killed me. I have received numerous calls from people asking if I was dead! I now know that Akpabio is testing the grounds for my elimination. Whenever I travel to Akwa Ibom State for the ‘terrorism’ charge Akpabio hanged on me, I notice unusual cars trailing me. The current rumour of my death has prompted this publication to alert the world about what might be the latest ploy of the evil ones.

This is not the first time that Akpabio’s Government has planned to eliminate me.

The evil orchestration to silence me is more sinister than the charge of ‘terrorism’ which Akpabio hanged on me before the election, and ‘treason’ which he hanged on Senator Akpan Udoedehe. Long before the election, he plotted to kill me and blame it on kidnappers. A concerned Akwa Ibomite tipped me off on a plot to kill anybody capable of challenging Akpabio in the April elections. I was top on the list.

When I got the gory details of the plot to use cultists to eliminate me, I sent an SMS to one of the masterminds, Umana Okon Umana, Akpabio’s Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to find out why they wanted to kill me. I received no answer. He later sent an SMS apologizing. The next day, Ini Udonwa who declared interest to contest as Governor was shot and his 62 year old mother kidnapped, violated, killed and her corpse was left on the streets of Uyo. Seeing that I had the details of the evil plot, Akpabio visited my residence in Lagos in the company of his brother, Nsentip Akpabio and Chief Dr. Chris Ekpenyong, the former Deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State. Akpabio knelt down and begged me not to allow the world hear about the plot. I forgave him. I told him to get up that he should not kneel down for me, but only to God. I advised him to use the position of his being the governor, to be friendly and good to people not to use it to kill or maim people and bring misery to them.

The second time was during my detention for “terrorism” at the SSS State Command in Uyo. Akpabio visited the facility in the early hours of Wednesday November 3, 2010 at around 2.15am. He came with the state Director of the SSS, Mr. Toma Minti. Thereafter, Akpabio and Minti entered my room and Minti had a conversation with me. Purporting to mock me, Akpabio sang a song in Efik: “owo inamke nkpo ikan oro eyen Abasi sosongo o!” (Man can’t do more than what He has done! Jesus thank you o!) There and then Akpabio supervised the torture of three innocent boys to get them to implicate me on kidnapping all to no avail. One of the issues Minti raised was that we could ‘talk’ so there wouldn’t be any need to go to court. My response was that I was already arraigned the previous day in a Magistrate Court, so there was no need to ‘talk’ but I insisted on clearing my name in Court. Akpabio left at around 2.57am. It is pertinent for me to let the world know that the SSS officers and men treated me well while I was with them. My special thanks go to their medical unit.

When Akpabio and Minti left my room, I began to feel dizzy and my blood pressure rose to an unprecedented high. The SSS Command’s medical unit can attest to this. I have been very ill since then. I suspect that some noxious gas was sprayed in the room by Akpabio. Should I die from this, I want the world to hold Akpabio responsible. Also, should I be suddenly kidnapped or assassinated, the world should know that Akpabio, Umana Okon Umana and the State Police Commissioner, Felix Uyanna should be held responsible. (Mr. Uyanna refused to give me police protection even as the deputy governorship candidate during the election and when I asked, he told me that he was rather looking for how to get me arrested). It is worthy to note here that Mr. Uyanna was the only Commissioner of Police that was not moved from his duty post during the last election. If any of my family members suddenly comes to harm, let the world know that Akpabio and his goons are responsible. How can one explain a situation where gunmen now invade churches in Akwa Ibom State during service and kill people? It’s happening under the government of Akpabio.

The content of the alleged withdrawal publication could not have emanated from me for the following reasons:

1. I remained the Deputy Governorship candidate of the ACN till the election. Had I withdrawn, the ACN would have put in a substitute. Thus, the question should be, if not for the electoral robbery that took place in Akwa Ibom State on the 26th of April 2011 and Senator Akpan Udoedehe had become governor, who would have been his deputy? Was there another running mate for the ACN? There was none.

2. There was no way, I, Ime Umanah, would have stated as alleged at paragraph 3 that I joined the ACN and accepted to be running mate out of anger and frustration! What manner of anger and frustration? I accepted being the running mate to Senator Udoedehe as a salute for his love for our state and exemplary commitment to rescuing our state from evil and oppression. On my part it was a sacrifice for the liberation of Akwa Ibom and show of loyalty to my people. Given the disturbing trends in our state, it was not an abnormal sacrifice for any person having the interest of Akwa Ibom State and its people at heart.

3. Paragraph 7 is the most repulsive. Even if I were dying, there was no way I would have faced my people to say I was supporting Akpabio as governor in view of “his landmark achievements in terms of infrastructural and human capital development.” How could I? Let Chief Dr. Akpabio tell Akwa Ibom people how much has accrued to the state coffers as federal allocation and internally generated funds for the past four (4) years as he continues to boast about the roads, flyover bridge and cinema halls when unemployment, poverty and hunger continue to decapitate the people! The facts speak for themselves. For instance his “free education policy” is a sham! As you read this, Primary School teachers in the state were paid their March and April salaries only on the 3rd of June and their May salaries are still outstanding.

4. Akpabio claims to have built 204 state roads and 26 federal roads. Can he name these roads for the Akwa Ibom people and the Kilometers of each of the roads? Can he confirm or deny that he is building one kilometer of road for N1 billion? In June of 2010, he came to Abak and claimed that the youths of Abak 5 were going to receive him and that was the first time I heard anything about Abak 5. On that day, he came to commission the Park Lane Road which is about 400 meters and the Nursery School Road which he claimed was about 900 meters. But Abak people know that these two short roads were built and completed by Ben Okoko’s Construction Company. The two roads were awarded and paid for by Obong Victor Attah’s administration. To me, Akpabio has brought deceit and lies into governance. Since he became governor, his utterances and actions have earned him unenviable titles of “busy body” and “inim Akwa Ibom”(Akwa Ibom parrot). And that has brought the office of the governor of Akwa Ibom State to ridicule and disrespect.

How can I, Ime Umanah now say I was supporting him for a second term? Never!

The 2011 Gubernatorial election in the state was a war by Akpabio against 99.9% of Akwa Ibom people. We had a mass movement that the whole world saw and foreclosed the return of Akpabio. Those that robbed the people of their birth right in broad daylight should not rejoice because the matter is not closed. As a peace-loving and patriotic people, we cannot take the laws into our hands. That is why we have submitted our grievance to the Election Petition Tribunal. I won’t say any more on the election. We will allow the Tribunal to do its work.

That a nest of killers and kidnappers exist in Akwa Ibom State to intimidate political opposition and sexually humiliate their female relations is no longer a secret. During the days of President Umaru Yar’Adua, Akpabio told us that the then Akwa Ibom State Director of SSS, Mr. Mike Ejiofor had the effrontery to tell him (Akpabio) that he (Akpabio) was the leader of the kidnapping gang terrorizing the state and also had a killer squad. A furious Akpabio boasted that he stormed Yar’Adua’s office and demanded Ejiofor’s removal. He boasted that Yar’Adua summoned the then SSS Director-General, who came with another SSS official and President Yar’Adua of blessed memory ordered the SSS DG to relieve Ejiofor of his post in Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio said he had demanded that no Igbo man should be sent to his state on security functions. So Mr. Toma Minti from Benue State was sent. Ejiofor’s recall and posting to Abia State from where I believe he retired confirms that the SSS must have realized where the truth lies about his (Ejiofor’s) security scoop. There is no need to look for “terrorists” in Akwa Ibom State including those that burned President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign office and government cars to get the President’s sympathy before the election. Not when the burned cars and the campaign office were under a tight security watch by the police and other security agencies! Security agencies should have enough facts in their dossiers on where the terror in Akwa Ibom State is coming from. Who mastermind kidnappings, assassinations and rape in Akwa Ibom State? Security agencies know! I will leave it there.

The evil rumble in Akwa Ibom State is prophetically foretold in the Bible where it states that, “there are three things that make the earth tremble – no, four it cannot endure: a slave who becomes a king, an overbearing fool who prospers, a bitter woman who finally gets a husband, a servant girl who supplants her mistress,” Proverbs 30 vs 21 – 23 (New Living Translation). Chief Dr. Akpabio should find out where he fits in. This is the whole truth about the reign of terror in Akwa Ibom State .

It is more painful that when some of us were fighting for the creation of Akwa Ibom State, most of the people now destroying the state busied themselves with ‘419’ in Lagos bearing different scam aliases like “Group Managing Director of NNPC”, “Barrister Odd” and “Central Bank Governor” among others.

My good people of Akwa Ibom State, prior to and after the electoral robbery, we had asked you to remain peaceful. Please maintain that peace. With God as our Armour, the change team of Senator Udoedehe and I, will fight to vindicate you. I assure you that we won’t let you down. The Bible says that “when the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan,” Proverbs 29 vs. 2 (New Living Translation). Please persevere for God will arise on the side of His people. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning,” Psalm 30 vs. 5 (King James Version). There will still be morning on the horizons of Akwa Ibom State . The truth will prevail and darkness defeated, to God’s Glory.

Long live Akwa Ibom State !
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!
God bless Nigeria !!!

Politics / Governor Akpabio Has Completed Plans To Assassinate Aniekan Akpan---chairman Of by adook1: 10:24am On May 01, 2011
Governor Akpabio has Completed Plans to Assassinate Aniekan Akpan---Chairman of ACN

At the ACN primary, Aniekan Willie Akpan was nominated and voted for as the Chairman of ACN. What the people at the Primary Convention did not know was that they just made a mistake to vote for a crook and a betrayer as the Chairman of a very influential party in Akwa Ibom State.

Last week, an article in Weekly Insight (forwarded below) stated how Aniekan Akpan was romancing with Governor Akpabio. The article mentioned how Aniekan Akpan was offered as much as N100 million and a brand new Jeep, a trip to Ghana, Dubai, and any other country of his choice, if he would mortgage the chances of his party in the governorship election. After I read the article, I placed a telephone call to Aniekan Akpan. I asked him if the story is true. He denied it as the work of PDP agents who are trying to derail the advancement of ACN and its candidate. Latest developments have confirmed that Aniekan Akpan lied to me and the entire Akwa Ibom people.

Today, I received a telephone call a few minutes ago from one of my contacts in Akwa Ibom State. I was told that Aniekan Akpan, the Chairman of ACN, was on television and radio offering congratulatory messages to Governor Akpabio. It did not take long for Commissioner Aniekan Umanah to post the information on the forum.

But here is the whole truth. What Aniekan Akpan does not know is that Governor Godswill Akpabio has completed plans to assassinate him. A very highly reliable source in Akpabio's administration has confirmed that Akpabio is jittery and extremely worried about the thousands of pictures and videos that were secretly taken during the election. Some of those pictures are very incriminating. For instance, among the evidence submitted to INEC by ACN lawyers is a video tape of election rigging strategies that were discussed at the parlor of the Deputy Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. And then there is another video in which an unwilling voter was beaten and forced to thumb-print several voter cards.

Information has leaked out that when Governor Akpabio tried to bribe the officials of INEC, he was told that available evidence submitted by ACN in Akwa Ibom State are too overwhelming not to take appropriate measures to correct the problem. In other words, Akpabio was told that INEC has no choice but to cancel the election. Governor Akpabio knows very well that when the election is conducted again, he will definitely lose it. The only way he can win the election is to get rid of Akpanudoedehe by all means. And that is where the strategy to assassinate Aniekan Willie Akpan was discussed and agreed upon as a good strategy for winning.

The plan is to assassinate Aniekan Akpan, just as it happened when Chief Paul Inyang was assassinated, Governor Akpabio will accuse Senator Akpanudoedehe of committing the crime. Akpabio will then appear on television and lie to Akwa Ibom people that Akpanudoedehe killed Aniekan Akpan for supporting his (Akpabio) second-term victory. Reliable sources have confirmed that with the help of Governor Akpabio, the wife of Aniekan Akpan has already been sent abroad to stay at some undisclosed country.

Akwa Ibom 2011: Can Akpabio stem the tide of opposition?
Sunday, 04 April 2010 Bassey Anthony

Political activities in Akwa Ibom State are already in full throttle ahead of the 2011

general election. Within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for instance, all the

gladiators in state’s politics have been smarting up for the contest.

While the opposition parties are less active compared to the ruling PDP, there are also

potential areas of tension within the opposition camp, which might ignite a full-blown

politicking in the coming months.

Without doubts, Akwa Ibom is one of the states in the Southsouth where the governorship

election will be keenly contested both at the primary election of the PDP, and at the

general election.

There are two reasons for this situation: one is the ethnic dimension that is attached to

the governorship of the state and the second, is the personality clash between the incumbent

governor of the state, Obot Godswill Akpabio and his predecessor, Obong Victor Attah.

From what the Nigerian Compass can gather, forces loyal to Governor Akpabio are already

oiling the machinery for his second term reelection.

For example, the city of Uyo, which is the capital of the state is already awash with bill

boards advertising the achievements of Governor Akpabio, as well as in all the nooks and

crannies of the 31 local government areas of the state.

Apart from the bill boards, a great number of pressure groups, including women, youth and

socio-cultural groups, have also sprung in Akwa Ibom State in recent time with a common

message: Support Akpabio for second term.

While the development is already causing some hiccups across factions within the PDP, the

opposition appears to be watching with keen interest, waiting for a weak opening it could

attack from.

For any cursory observer of Akwa Ibom State politics, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in

state is a divided house.

The reason for the sharp division within the PDP, which prides itself as the only party in

the South-South state is not far fetched: the gladiators in the party in the state have

taken divergent positions on the composition of the state executive body of the party.

The major actors in the crisis rocking the Akwa Ibom PDP are the state governor, Akpabio and

his predecessor in office, Attah.

Expectedly, many of top chieftains of the party have also been divided along the lines Attah

and Akpabio.

Akpabio, being the governor, and according to the constitution of the PDP, is the leader of

the party in the state.

On the other hand, Attah being a foundation member of the party and also a former governor,

is a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the party.

The BOT is a very influential organ of the PDP.

The bone of contention between the pro-Akpabio and the Attah group is the acceptability of

state chairman of the party, Mr. Uwem Ita Etuk and the entire executive body.

According to feelers from the party, Attah is said to be angry that he was not part of the

process that produced Uwem as the state chairman. Sources say that he feels slighted that

Akpabio bye-passed him as a former governor and a member of the BOT in the composition of

the state leadership of the party. Attah therefore, wants the executive body dissolved.

However, Akpabio, on the other hand, is insistent on retaining the executive as constituted.

In finding a thaw to the crisis, the national leadership of the PDP mandated a

reconciliation committee headed by General Ike Nwachukwu, and shortlisted Akwa Ibom as one

of the PDP-controlled states the committee would visit.

However, it appears that the even the Ike Nwachukwu committee was not able to achieve much

in closing the chasm in the Akwa Ibom PDP when it visited the state last October, as both

parties stuck to their guns.

Sources in the PDP national secretariat, however, told the Nigerian Compass that the

committee is currently having a second look at the Akwa Ibom situation, and will soon

present an official position on the crisis.

But, until the committee presents its report the status quo subsists, thus heightening the

acrimony in the party.

The indecisiveness of the committee rather than calm frayed nerves between the two camps,

has further exacerbated the tension and suspicion within the party in the state.

The present chaotic situation in the party has, however, given vent to the insinuation that

the PDP in Akwa Ibom State would not speak with one voice ahead of 2011 election .

It is also feared that the division in the PDP ahead of 2011 might create an opportunity for

the opposition parties to latch on.

Another angle to the crisis in Akwa Ibom PDP is the zoning arrangement for the governorship

position.

Ordinarily, there are three major ethnic groupings in Akwa Ibom State: Ibibio, Annang and

Oron.

During the tenure of Attah as governor of the state, the leadership of the PDP, then, had

zoned the governorship seat to the Annang – the second largest ethnic bloc in the state in

the spirit of ethnic balancing.

That was the arrangement which paved the path for Akpabio’s emergence as the PDP

governorship candidate in 2006.

The Ibibios, by sheer size is the largest of the three ethnic blocs, and had occupied the

governorship of the state since its creation in September 29, 1987 .

The Nigerian Compass, however, scooped that there are divisions in the party on whether to

allow the Annang, as personified by Akpabio, serve two terms tenure as governor, or that the

position should return to the Ibibios.

Akpabio is about completing his first tenure of four years and has his eyes keenly set for a

second term.

But, not even the support from traditional rulers from the Ibibio land, barring any of the

Ibibio politicians from contesting the governorship next year against Akpabio is holding

ground.

Right now, quite a number of aspirants have emerged from Ibibio, who are also gunning for

the governorship.

So far, three Ibibios have declared to contest the governorship elections against Akpabio.

On the list are the former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),

Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, former Military Administrator of Ogun and Rivers State ,

Group Captain Sam Ewang (rtd), and Mr. Iniekong Udonwa.

Apart from the PDP, about five other political parties seem to have registered presence in

Akwa Ibom State. They are, the Action Congress (AC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP),

the Labour Party (LP), the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) and, lately, the Progressive

Peoples Alliance (PPA).

In all these, the opposition parties in the state have appeared to be mere spectators,

thereby, fueling insinuations in many quarters that they have either been bought over by the

ruling PDP or experiencing some internal problems.

The PPA for instance, started showing some political relevance in Akwa Ibom State shortly

after the party’s national congress last year produced an indigene and former PDP

gubernatorial aspirant in state, Mr. Larry as national chairman.

Suffice to say that none of the mentioned opposition parties in the state has, for now,

commenced any serious effort at wresting power from the PDP.

Checks placed by the Nigerian Compass indicate that none of the top politicians in the state

has shown interest in contesting the governorship position on the platform of any of the

opposition parties.

Although some of the notable opposition parties such as ANPP and AC in the state have been

making occasional pronouncements that they were preparing for the forthcoming elections, but

so far, there are no indication that the pronouncement have been marched with actions.

There are certain reasons to believe that the ANPP and the AC, which many consider as

formidable opposition parties in the state, would not make any significant impact in the

2011 elections.

Unlike in 2007 when the ANPP had Ewang as its governorship candidate, it is not likely that

in the present scenario, the party or any of the present opposition parties in the state

could beat its chest that it could have such a high ranking politician as its candidate for

the governorship election.

Reason: the current attempt by opposition forces in the country to form a common alliance

through the mega party structure is slowing down the level negotiation among the parties.

Of course, Ewang’s ANPP lost the 2007 election to the PDP, but his mere presence added more

flavour to the race, and also gave a boost to the profile of the ANPP in Akwa Ibom State.

Right now, the Nigerian Compass can scoop that all is not well between the leadership of the

ANPP in Akwa Ibom State and Ewang, and it is not unlikely that Ewang might look another way

from the ANPP this time around in his gubernatorial ambition.

He has since indicated his intention to run for the 2011 governorship elections, but till

now, he has not given a clue to the political party he would use as a lunch pad.

Ewang also shunned a reconciliation meeting held last year in Uyo on the grounds that the

peace meeting was not held at the party’s state secretariat situated at the Udosen Uko

Street .

As if to confirm that there is a frosty relationship between Ewang and the ANPP, the state

party chairman, Mr. Paul Bassey, in a recent interview with the Nigerian Compass in Uyo,

said the party was waiting for its national secretariat to blow the whistle for it to

conduct its primaries that would eventually produce the governorship candidate for 2011.

Asked whether the party was aware that Ewang had declared his intention to run for the

governorship, Bassey told our correspondent that nobody in the party was aware of Ewang’s

gubernatorial ambition as he was yet to inform the party.

It is, however, widely believed among political circles that Ewang is merely bidding his

time as it is being rumoured that he is one of those advocating for the emergence of a mega

party.

Ewang himself had said during an interview with our correspondent that he was yet to inform

the ANPP of his ambition to run for the governorship in 2011.

The seeming lull in the ANPP in the state, according to watchers of political events in the

state, stems from the fact that the party does not have the financial muscle to match the

PDP in any electoral contest. This much can be attested by the huge oil revenue that comes

to the coffers of the PDP-controlled government in Akwa Ibom State .

Again, there are incontrovertible evidence to suggest that the ANPP, after the 2007

election, has not been interacting with the electorate, a situation which seems to have

grossly affected the electoral fortune of the party.

Save for some occasional critical statements in the media on some government programmes and

projects, the ANPP leadership in the state has been voiceless.

The Action Congress (AC) is not faring better, either. The party chairman of the party in

the state, Comrade David Ekanem, has left no one in doubt that the AC is still licking the

wounds of its loss at the tribunal challenging the mandate of the incumbent PDP

administration.

Ever since the Court of Appeal ruling validating the election of Akpabio, the governorship

candidate of the AC in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. James Inima, has gone into oblivion.

The party at the moment, according to sources, is waiting for its national secretariat to

give it the green light to conduct its state congress which would eventually produce a

governorship candidate.

Although the state chairman, Ekanem, has severally boasted that the party was finding it

difficult to cope with the sea of notable politicians who have indicated interest to pick

its governorship ticket, there are no indications at the moment that it can parade any

strong candidate that would match Akpabio, the likely PDP candidate, money for money and

power for power.

There are, however, widespread speculations that the former Minister of State for the

Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, may dump the PDP and

pitch his tent with the AC due to his running battle with Akpabio.

Akpanudoedehe had stormed the city of Uyo with his supporters to openly declare his

intention to run for the governorship and formally open his campaign office.

He did not mention the political party he will be using to contest for the position.

The PPA also is seemingly standing on a precipice. Penultimate Friday, during the burial of

a former state chairman of the PDP, Chief Anthony Emenyi in Oron Local Government Area of

the state, its national chairman, Mr. Larry Esin, was visibly and conspicuously hobnobbing

with PDP chieftains in the state.

Esin, according to our investigation, is already receiving signals from the PDP urging him

to decamp from the PPA to the PDP.

Esin defected to the PPA after contesting for the PDP governorship ticket in December 2006

against Akpabio, alongside 50 other contestants and came third.

It remains uncertain if Esin would be able to muster enough political courage and grassroots

support to battle the PDP for which he was a strong member before his exit.

In another breathe, pundits are of the strong belief that there is no such thing as an

opposition party in Akwa Ibom State going by recent rumours making the rounds in the state

that most of the opposition parties have been compromised to relinquish their earlier

position to take over power from the PDP.

To confirm this school of thought, there have been grave indications that there are widening

cracks in the fold of the opposition in the state with each of the parties accusing the

other of being an appendage of the PDP.

For instance, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) in the state under the

leadership of Comrade David Ekanem of the AC, last year accused the State Chairman of the

Labour Party(LP) Mr. Stern Etim, of giving clandestine support for the second term

reelection of Akpabio.

Etim was also alleged to have led some members of his party and other parties to collect

huge amount of money from the PDP government in the state to endorse the governor for a

second term.

Although the LP chairman has denied that he was bribed by the government, but how is party,

the LP, can strategically position itself to edge out the PDP in the forthcoming

governorship race is yet to be seen.

There will continue to be crisis in the PDP, until, ’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will continue to experience crises until it is returned

to the original founders of the party, a former deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief

Chris Ekpeyong, has said.

Ekpeyong, a chieftain of the PDP and one of the founding members of the party in Akwa Ibom

State, said the reason why the PDP had veered off its original track and vision was because

the party had been hijacked by people who he described as “traders.”

According to Ekpeyong, the leadership crises and the seeming lack of vision and direction

experienced by the PDP is a direct fall-out of the negligence of the founding fathers of the

party.

Speaking during an interview with the Nigerian Compass, during the week, Ekpeyong said, “the

major vision and mission behind the formation of the PDP by notable Nigerians such as

Solomon Lar; Late Bola Ige; Alex Ekweme; Atiku Abubakar; Adamu Ciroma, Abubakar Rimi; Chief

Victor Attah; my humble self and others was for the party to solve Nigeria’s problems which

were largely caused by the long years of military rule.”

Lamenting that the dreams of the party have not been actualised, he said, “What has happened

is that the PDP today is not the PDP of our dreams. It is not the PDP of the days of Adamu

Ciroma; Alex Ekwenme; late Bola Ige; Solomon Lar; Jerry Gana; Abubakar Atiku; Abubakar Rimi

and a host of others and even Chief Ojo Meduekwe. If Madueke is sincere to himself, he will

know that this is not the PDP of our dreams.

“I think they allowed bystanders to over-take the real conveners and foundation members who

had the focus, knowing that Nigeria had a problem and we wanted to solve the problem of

Nigeria by forming a formidable political machinery that will wrestle power from the

military, and at the time, give Nigerians a sense of vision, mission and arrival.”

The ex-deputy governor stressed that being one of those who brought the PDP to Akwa Ibom

State, he deserved a better deal from the present leadership of the party, particularly his

former boss, Attah, as well as Otuekong Don Etiebet.

Speaking on attempts by some Ibibio politicians to prevent Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa

Ibom State, an Annang, to go for second term in office, Ekpeyong insisted that it was only

fair and justifiable for the Ibibios in the state to respect the power shift to the Annangs

as conceived and agreed upon by the three major ethnic groups in the state during the

Attah’s administration.

His words, “As a former deputy governor, and being an Anang, I was a symbol of that power

shift even though it was not automatic for me to succeed him (Attah), but it was symbolic

that power should shift to people of Anang extraction.”

2011: Akpanudoedehe, Ewang, Udonwa and the battle for Akpabio’s job
Tuesday, 23 March 2010 00:00 Bassey Anthony
E-mail Print PDF

Ahead of the 2011 elections, the political atmosphere in Akwa Ibom State is getting charged

up as politicians occupying various elective offices have begun frantic moves to ensure that

they are not thrown overboard by the whirlwind of the forthcoming elections.

In the same vein, those desirous of taking over from the present occupants of the offices

from May 29, 2011 have started building bridges across some powerful political foundations

and institutions in their determined bid to unseat the incumbents.

While these high-level consultations, intrigues and manipulations continue feverishly among

various political camps, pundits and even keen watchers of the unfolding political events in

the state have come to the conclusion that going by the complexion of Akwa Ibom politics,

which is usually characterised by last minute surprises, next year’s elections would not be

a tea party for both the incumbents and those aspiring to step into their shoes.

No political office is spared in the ongoing battle for occupancy and no aspiring politician

is willing to blink first for the other else he or she is discountenanced as a political

Lilliputian by his or her opponent. Right from the governorship office to the least, which

is the councillorship, the battle is raging. The hysteria displayed in the whole drama has

made pundits to warn that no politician, regardless of his or her political stature, should

be written off.

The fiercest battle ground, it does appear, is the governorship office presently occupied by

Chief Godswill Akpabio. The governorship seat is arguably the most coveted office in the

state, perhaps because of the enormous oil revenue that comes into the coffers of the

22-year old oil-rich state. Contenders for the number one plum job in the state would stop

at nothing to have control over this oil wealth.

Akpabio rode on the horses of popularity, acceptability and sheer providence to become

governor in 2007. He had surreptitiously and tactically built his political foundation and

structures across the 31 local government areas of the state while serving as Commissioner

for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and later that of Lands and Housing in the

administration of his predecessor, Chief Victor Attah, between 1999 and 2007.

His goodwill towards the three major ethnic blocs of Ibibio, Annang and Oron in the state

while serving as commissioner in the two aforementioned ministries earned him the peoples

love and acceptability and by the popular demand of the generality of Akwa Ibomites he was

voted as the second democratically elected governor of the state after surmounting the

initial odds of the December 2006 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries when he contested

against over fifty aspirants including his former boss’s son in-law, Dr. Udoma Bob Ekarika.

Since Akpabio took over the mantle of leadership in the state, not a few people have

attested to the fact that he has brought rapid and evenly-spread human and infrastructural

development to all parts of the state without recourse to ethnic or political bias. He has

also being commended for completing most of the projects initiated by his predecessor.

Going by his recorded achievements there have being passionate calls and endorsements from

numberless quarters for him to go for a second term and Akpabio himself, whom so many have

described as the most desperate second term-seeking governor, is not leaving anything to

chance to ensure that he returns to office to consolidate on his achievements.

Described in political circles in the state as ‘a child of Destiny’, one would have thought

that with his firm control over the PDP executive in the state coupled with his performances

in his almost three years in office and the strings of endorsements he has received so far,

he would be granted a second term on a platter of gold.

Besides his astounding achievements, there is solid agreement among the three major ethnic

groups of Ibibio, Annang and Oron that the Annang ethnic group to which Akpabio belongs

should occupy the governorship seat for another four years. The Ibibios had monopolised the

governorship since the creation of the state in 1987 until former Governor Attah thought it

wise to allow the Annangs, in the spirit of ethnic balance, have a shot at it.

However, arising from the ever growing opposition forces against the youthful governor and

his second term ambition as evident by the emergence of other seemingly powerful

politicians, who have declared their interest to contest for the office of governor with him

in the 2011 race, many political observers in the state now believe that he may not be a

‘Child of Destiny’ after all.

So far, only three persons have boldly come out to declare their intention to contest

against Akpabio. They are the former military administrator of Ogun and Rivers states and

the 2003 and 2007 governorship candidate of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), Group

Captain Sam Ewang (rtd), Dr. Iniabasi Udonwa, a Singapore-based businessman and the former

Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator John James Akpanudoedehe.

However, out of the three of them, one man that is giving Akpabio sleepless nights is

Akpanudodehe, his estranged political ally. Though the governor, perhaps due to pride, has

not admitted it openly that he has an incurable phobia for Akpanudoedehe, many believe that

Akpabio’s is afraid of him.

The former FCT junior minister, it is not yet forgotten, was Akpabio’s campaign manager in

the last electioneering campaigns but today he could be described as the governor’s

‘Achilles’ heel’. He wants Akpabio’s job and he is not making any pretences about his deep

animosity for the present administration under his former principal.

Akpanudodehe, who had since declared his intention to run for the governorship, few weeks

ago, stormed the city of Uyo , the Akwa Ibom State capital, with thousands of his supporters

to officially open his campaign office at Udotung Ubo Street, Uyo. The long train of

supporters which accompanied him round major streets of Uyo no doubt rattled the present

administration.

According to his political associates, the former minister is a very daring, fearless and

unrelenting person whose penchant for die-hard politics is unrivalled. These attributes of

his recently played out dramatically at the funeral of a foremost traditional ruler, the

late Usonyin Okon Ekpo Ekpo, the Okuibom Ibibio and paramount ruler of Ibesikpo Asutan Local

Government Area.

Akpanudodehe, not minding the presence of Akpabio and other top government functionaries at

the burial ceremony, ended his condolence message by referring to himself ‘Governor of Akwa

Ibom State in 2011’. Akpabio was highly embarrassed and infuriated by the former minister’s

bare-faced effrontery. But for the quick intervention of eminent traditional and political

leaders, who were at the event, the governor had made moves to dispatch from the venue of

the ceremony.

There are speculations that he may even soon dump the PDP for another political platform in

order for him to realise his governorship ambition. Already some politicians in the

opposition camp are luring him with the governorship ticket.

Recently, the state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Bassey Eshiet, disclosed that there are ongoing

talks by the opposition for Akpanudoedehe to be given the governorship ticket. According to

Eshiet, the opposition parties discussing the possibility of merger party have agreed to

field a formidable candidate that would match Akpabio money for money and power for power,

adding that they have found the former FCT Minister as that person.

Again, it is strongly believed that former governor Attah is solidly in support of his

gubernatorial ambition. This could be evidenced by the support Akpanudodehe gave and is

still giving the former governor in the fight to change the present PDP exco in the state

under the leadership of Mr. Uwem Ita Etuk. Also recently, during the burial of a former

state PDP Chairman, Chief Tony Emenyi in Oron Local Government Area of the state, youths of

the area carried placards which said: “We Say No to Attah and Akpanudodehe”.

Another politician who is anxious to see Akpabio’s back in 2011 is Ewang. He tried in 2003

to be governor but failed. Again in 2007, he contested against the incumbent on the platform

of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but lost. As 2011 approaches, he has again come out

to challenge the governor at the polls.

Ewang boasted in an interview with the Nigerian Compass that Akpabio would hand over to him

in 2011 whether he (Akpabio) or anybody believes it or not. An advocate of the merger party

structure, the former MILAD, who is yet to inform his party, the ANPP, of his intention to

contest the 2011 governorship elections, said Akpabio’s power of incumbency and the enormous

resources at his disposal would not work for him in next year’s polls.

According to him, his desire to clinch the governorship from Akpabio is informed by the

alleged maladministration by the PDP government in the state as evidenced in the high level

of insecurity of lives and property, youth unemployment, lack of political will to revive

ailing industries, poverty and misdirected application of state funds to projects of less or

no importance to the socio-economic fortunes of the state. He is quick to assure that if

voted into power he would change the old order and bring respite to the people.

Also, Udonwa, a relatively unknown political figure in the state, Udonwa had, last month,

set up his campaign office at 2, Wellington Bassey Way , Uyo, and the road that leads to the

Government House. Many who know him describe him as a man with a very deep pocket.

Despite Udonwa’s ‘deep pocket’, several political schools of thought have dismissed him as a

political neophyte who should not be given a second thought by Akpabio. Their argument is

that he is not resident in the state and as such does not have any political structure.

Again and most importantly too, he does not belong to any known political party. There are

speculations, however, that he may finally pitch his tent with the Action Congress (AC). But

even if AC gives him the ticket what difference would he make? The AC in the state is weak

and does not have the capacity to pose a threat to the PDP government in the state let alone

make any significant impact in the 2011 elections.

The writing on the wall also indicates that even if he decides to join the PDP, he would

definitely not get a ticket to run for the governorship because the ticket has already been

given to the incumbent.
It is against this background that the first indigenous military admi

nistrator of the state and strong supporter of the Akpabio’s administration, Air Commodore

Idongesit Nkanga, concluded that those aspiring to take over power from the governor were

only embarking on unprofitable ventures.

His words, “We have told the people that this is the best thing for us as a people. We have

never said that nobody should come and contest. It is just that it is unprofitable for them

so that is what we are saying. Nobody stops them. I mean in a democracy we expect many

people to be on the ballot paper; let them come; nobody says they shouldn’t come but the

Ibibios have taken their decision. They have made it public. Anybody that does otherwise,

that is his headache. We would not stop anybody from contesting”.

But despite the series of endorsements from various socio-political groups and several

assurances from powerful political figures in the state, Akpabio himself appears to be

jittery.

The reason for the governor’s seeming fright is linked to rumours making the rounds that the

Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan may soon name Attah as one of his senior aides.

Akpabio, it is also rumoured, is not in the good books of the Acting President and so it is

anticipated that when Attah, who is his arch enemy finally makes Jonathan’s list of

appointees he would use his position to ensure that he puts spanner in the works of the

governor’s second term ambition.

As if he is acting out his fears, the Akpabio has given instructions to his aides to stop

granting press interviews. A source disclosed that the move is aimed at checkmating

utterances of government officials who may out of overzealousness say things that may worsen

the already strained relationship between him and his predecessor.

As part of strategies to secure his second term ambition, the governor at the weekend held

an important meeting with top Ibibio political leaders. According to those close to the

meeting which held at Asan Ibibio, the Ibibio traditional meeting point, the discussion at

the meeting centered on the need for the Ibibio to support the Annang to go back for second

term in office. The Governor, according to the source, had appealed during the meeting for

the cooperation of Ibibio leaders to convince their kinsmen to vote for Akpabio in 2011.

Despite Akpabio’s strategic moves for retain the governorship seat in 2011, will the forces

against him allow him? Will he mend fences with his former boss whom the Ibibios respect so

much? If he doesn’t, would he scale the high walls of political intrigues all by himself as

2011 beckons? All eyes are watching but sure Akwa Ibom State is sitting on a political time

bomb waiting to be detonated in 2011.

Rimi Plots To Control Kano PDP

Abubakar Rimi

Former member of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees (BOT), Alhaji Mohammadu Abubakar Rimi may have commenced subtle moves to regain control of the party machinery in Kano State and by extension, whittle down the influence of the former governor of the state, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Credible party sources say although everybody in the party recognises the need for forgiveness and unity if the party hopes to dislodge the All Nigeria Peoples Party (PDP) in the Kano State Government House, there is still a lot of intrigues and power play going on in the party.

It was gathered that the current move to redress the alleged imbalance in the party structure being championed by some of elders and prominent party leaders, otherwise known as the Stakeholders is just a surreptitious way to attempt to wrest the party machinery from Kwankaso and his supporters.

The party sources revealed that the Stakeholders include such chieftains like Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghalli Umar Na’ Abba, Alhaji Umar Yakuba Danhassan, Alhaji Aminu Babba Danpaffa, Ambassador Aminu Wali, Alhaji Dauda Dangala and Alhaji Ibrahim Amin including a few former gubernatorial aspirants in the 2007 primaries, among others.

Rimi and Na’Abba, it would be recalled, just reunited with the party after they had cross-carpeted to the Action Congress (AC) to fight the Third Term Agenda of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Similarly, Danhassan, a 2003 gubernatorial contender, also left the PDP in the state for the Peoples Salvation Party in search of greater relevance.

Their sudden return had, therefore, placed them on the fringes of the party’s politics, while their initial exit had provided a window of opportunity for Dr. kwankwaso to strengthen his grip on the party machinery.

In seeking to redress the alleged imbalance in the party structure, their first demand is that the State Executive, as is presently composed, be dissolved in favor of a Caretaker Committee, ahead of the ward congresses and the party’s national convention, whenever it is scheduled to take place.

In fact, Rimi and his group are said to have met severally and in one of the meetings, worked out a power sharing formula for the new look party they are advocating.

However, their quest has so far met a brick wall with Kwankwaso making it clear that he would not take part in any meeting that has Rimi in attendance until their differences were resolved.

He said he takes exception to the accusation that he had a hand in the murder of late Sadiatu, wife of Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, by her husband.

But in making their case, the Rimi group have argued that the executive council as composed was rather too apologetic to Kwankwaso.

It is their view that such a situation, if allowed to continue, would only perpetuate the current disproportionate and slanted representation of the various groups and interests in the party, which might be exploited to negate internal democracy in the party in the future.

In contrast, the pro- Kwankwaso officials insist that the former Defence Minister would engender some degree of stability in the party, if given the choice to determine the flow of events.

They maintain that his preference, besides his personal interest, is prompted by the credible performance of the party executive, which has led to the upward swing in its popularity in the state and now posts a dangerous threat to the rival party, the ANPP in subsequent elections in the state.

When contacted on the issues, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Ishaq Mukhatar told the Sunday Sun that for now, no official petition, with respect to the dissolution of the executive, in favor of a Caretaker Committee has been received.

Mukhatar said if such a demand was to be considered then it should not be limited to PDP Kano State alone.

He noted that since the PDP is a national party, any decision in this regard, would have to be central in application and may have to start from the national offices, then down to the state level and further down.

Saying that there is a strong bond of unity in the party, he reaffirmed Kwankwaso’s leadership of the party in the state.

The former governor, he said has been responsible for the funding of the party since 1999 when he was the governor of the state.

But for once when Alhaji Amin Ibrahim came to the aid of the party, no other key party member has been consisting in supporting the party, financially as Kwankwaso, he stated.

He noted that under such a climate, it is not a surprise that he (Kwankwaso) has so much influence in the party.

On the differences between Rimi and Kwankwaso, he disclosed that leaders of the party, a lot of persons and party men have been working night and day to reconcile them.

He disclosed that a reconciliation meeting recently took place at the residence of the former deputy governor, Alhaji Umar Ganduje.

He said Kwankwaso and Rimi both drove in the same car to the office of Alhaji Aminu Danbaffa for the stakeholders meeting.

Federal Government has finally taken what many see as a decisive move against kidnappers and their sponsors with the arrest of key perpetuators of the kidnappings and dreaded ritual murder network who are members of akpabio government. reliable sources say that at the police headquarters in uyo signals has just been received that will see the mass redeployment of most of the officers in the state. a new unit of mobile policemen has just been ordered in, with instructions to concentrate stop and search on luxurious cars and vehicles with government number plates, the directorate OF STATE SECURITY SERVICES(NSO) in akwa ibom state will be likely affected too as the federal government starts implementing reports of security misconducts in the state.

Information gathered also indicate that several commissioners might be called up for questioning and detention especially those connected with the movement of large cache of arms, ammunitions and uniforms said to be in connection with akpabios bid for 2011 elections. the operation meant to soften the grounds for all contestants for the election will also reach out to leaders of akpabios mobilization groups, ritual doctors and pastors, hired assasins and informants etc who are confirmed to be in the security list of the government. similar operations is ongoing In bayelsa where the EFCC has swopped in on nearly all the entire executive of the bayelsa state government including associates and cronies.

in akwa ibom it is expected that the clean sweep will continue with the federal operatives being changed weekly so as no to be compromised. reorganisation or disbandment of the dreaded ABUMA security outfit is also considered, no one can say how many of the aides and cronies of akpabio has been arrested as many have gone into hiding and others are on the run.

A visibly shaken governor akpabio has been running around different security bosses in Abuja including the office of the national security adviser has been rebuffed and shunned by hereto reliable hands in his swipe as the new national security adviser gusau refuses to oblige him.

Most of his commissioners/ aides have abandoned their offices and are said to be on the watch as events unfold. The EFCC we gather may come in later as the struggle is in stages and may ruin careers/expectation s.

RITUALS KILLING IN AKWA IBOM STATE

A lot of people have confess over your posting of the pieces on kidnapping . A weekly Cabinet meeting went ahead after a delay of several hours after it became clear that Mr Yar’Adua would not be attending.

Nigeria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia said the 58-year-old flew home after a marked improvement in his condition, but it was several hours before officials in Abuja confirmed his return to the country.

Acting president Goodluck Jonathan will remain in charge while the president, treated for a serious heart condition, continues to recuperate, the president’s spokesman Segun Adeniyi said.

“After being discharged by the team of medical experts overseeing his treatment in, Saudi Arabia, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua returned to the presidential villa, Abuja early this morning,” he said.

“While the President completes his recuperation, Vice President Jonathan will continue to oversee the affairs of state,” he said.

The two leaders had yet to meet more than 12 hours after Yar’Adua’s return, Information Minister Dora Akunyili told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

She said Mr Jonathan had been briefed of Yar’Adua’s return by presidential aides.

Mr Jonathan “hopes to see the wife of the president this evening , and when he is eventually briefed by our president, he (Jonathan) will call us again,” she said.

The clandestine nature of the president’s return — in the dead of night, after a 93 day absence — did little to reassure the United States about his state of health, Washington expressing concern his return could spark “renewed uncertainty” in the major oil exporter.

Recent reports “continue to suggest that President Umaru Yar’Adua’s health remains fragile and that he may still be unable to fulfill the demands of his office,” said Washington’s top envoy to Africa, Johnnie Carson.

“We hope that President Yar’Adua’s return to Nigeria is not an effort by his senior advisors to upset Nigeria’s stability and create renewed uncertainty in the democratic process,” Mr Carson said in a statement released by the US embassy in Lagos.

“Nigeria needs a strong, healthy and effective leader to ensure the stability of the country and to manage Nigeria’s many political, economic and security challenges.”

Nigeria's vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan, will continue to lead the West African country while an ill President Umaru Yar'Adua recovers after treatment for a heart condition, an adviser to the latter said Wednesday.

Presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi issued the statement Wednesday in response to news that Yar'Adua had returned to Nigeria in the early morning after more than three months abroad at a Saudi Arabian hospital.

Yar'Adua was treated for inflammation of the lining of his heart and also suffers from chronic kidney problems.

The return of the president two weeks after parliament empowered Jonathan to act in his stead has sparked questions about the potential for another constitutional crisis in the country's fragile democracy.

Yar'Adua created a power vacuum when he left Nigeria in November without empowering his vice-president to take over.

Nigeria's House of Representatives and Senate passed measures earlier this month calling on Jonathan to act as president and commander in chief but only until Yar'Adua returned and was medically capable of leading the country of 150 million people.
Questions over Yar'Adua's health

Abdullah Aminchi, Nigeria's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said Yar'Adua needs time to recuperate before assuming presidential powers.

"He's already walking," the ambassador said. "He eats. He can move about. I think he just needs some time to rest, and he can go back to his work as president of Nigeria."

His return sparked international concern that it may have been politically motivated.

"We hope that President Yar'Adua's return to Nigeria is not an effort by his senior advisors to upset Nigeria's stability and create renewed uncertainty in the democratic process," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Johnnie Carson in a statement on Wednesday.

Yar'Adua won office in 2007 in an election marred by fraud, intimidation and violence, replacing outgoing president Olusegun Obasanjo.

It marked the first time power was transferred from one elected civilian to another in Nigeria, which suffered through a series of bloody coups after gaining independence from Britain in 1960.

Politics / Fec In Disarray As Jonathan Postpone Meeting by adook1: 5:56pm On Feb 24, 2010
The Federal Executive Council, FEC meeting slated today at the council chambers of the Presidential Villa has been postponed following disagreement between pro Yar'Adua Ministers and Pro Jonathan Ministers over whether or not the Acting President should preside.

This is even as sources told Pointblanknews.com that the gravely sick President who was smuggled back to the country last night was still inside the ambulance that took him to the Presidential villa wired up.

According to a source, the Secretary to the Government, Ahmed Yayale sauntered into the Council Chambers at about 12:15pm announcing that the Acting President Jonathan has postponed the meeting. He directed Ministers to reconvene at the Conference room at 2:00pm.
There are strong indications that all is not well at the Federal Executive Council, FEC meeting as Acting President Goodluck Jonathan announced the postponement of the meeting.

Meanwhile there are also indications that Pro Yar'Adua hawks have perfected plans to send a letter to the National Assembly announcing the return of the sick President in a bid to have the lawmakers reverse it resolution empowering Jonathan to act as President. The plans, sources told Pointblanknews.com is aimed at humiliating the Acting President.

Also, it was gathered that President Yar'Adua's Security Detail is still waiting behind the President's chair at the council chambers in anticipation the arrival of the sick President. Ministers were seen discussing in hush tones and meeting in groups before the meeting was postponed.

Acting President Jonathan who was not informed of the arrival of the President last night is said to be making frantic efforts to see him before the meeting. It was gathered that only Speaker Dimeji Bankole was privy to the return of the sick President.

The United States welcomes the news of President Yar’Adua’s return to Nigeria. We hope that his health is sufficient to enable him to fully resume his official duties. Nigeria needs a strong, healthy, and effective leader to ensure the stability of the country and to manage Nigeria’s many political, economic, and security challenges. Recent reports, however, continue to suggest that President Yar’Adua’s health remains fragile and that he may still be unable to fulfill the demands of his office.

We hope that President Yar’Adua’s return to Nigeria is not an effort by his senior advisors to upset Nigeria’s stability and create renewed uncertainty in the democratic process. Nigeria is an extraordinarily important country to its friends and partners, and all of those in positions of responsibility should put the health of the President and the best interests of the country and people of Nigeria above personal ambition or gain. As a nation of 150 million people, Nigeria’s democracy and its continued adherence to constitutional rule should be the highest priority.

The More Reasons Why Akpabio Must Go

Under the administration of Godswill Obot Akpabio, life is no longer safe in Akwa Ibom

State. For more than two and one-half years of his administration, Akwa Ibom State has

become and has remained the reference point for cultism, terrorism, kidnapping, armed

robbery, prostitution, money laundering, corruption, lies, political assassinations, cost of

contract inflation, cronyism, nepotism, and voodoo practice.

Akpabio is so much now into reading mafia and gangster books, which makes people wonder why

a state governor would be fascinated with mafia stories. His favorite books are "Mafia

Manager" by Mackaveli, "48 Loss of Power," "The Prince," "With Blood Letting Ritual." These

are the books that give governor Akpabio ideas on how to exact his punishments on his

perceived enemies and opposition. He once told an opponent not to run for the governorship

of Akwa Ibom State or he (Akpabio) will make Akwa Ibom ungovernable for the opponent if he

(the opponent) happens to win.

In a normal society, which Nigeria is not, someone with a personality of Godswill Akpabio

would never have been allowed into government, let alone become a governor. Here is a man

who was well known to be an active cult member in his school days. Those who know him said

he was very active in the KKK and the Buccaneer Cults. At the time of Abacha's regime,

during which scores of Nigerians were maimed and killed, just as it is happening now under

his regime, Akpabio was one of those that organized the million-man march in support of

General Sani Abacha. As a young lawyer in Lagos, the story is now well known that Akpabio

used to compose many of the letters, for a fee, which many "419" practitioners used to fax

all over the world to unsuspecting victims.

Those who know Akpabio well are still wondering where on earth did Victor Attah bring him

into government. And when he resigned as a Commissioner in Attah's administration to run for

the governorship of Akwa Ibom State, very few people, if any, knew that the man had no plan

for Akwa Ibom State, and probably never even believed in himself to win the election.

If Victor Attah's administration did not leave behind uncompleted projects, Akpabio would

never have done anything substantial for the people of Akwa Ibom State, despite all the

money that has been pouring into the State coffer.

Within the last 32 months of his governance, scores of complaints and petitions have been

leveled against him and his administration. He has been known to surround himself with

people whose characters are questionable. Many highly placed members of his administration

were into and some are still practicing cultism.

For example Ime Albert, who is the Commissioner of Finance, has been known to be the

founder and still an active member of the cult group known as the Vikings. It is interesting

that Chris Ekong, a one time Commissioner of the same Ministry, which Albert is now in

charge, was also an active and founding member of the cult group known as the Buccaneer and

Vikings.

What many Akwa Ibom people do not know is that these highly placed men have been using their

link to cult groups, and their positions in government, to fight for contract awards,

positions in government, and control of Akwa Ibom State resources.

For example, when Chris Ekong was the Commissioner for Finance in Akpabio's administration,

he tried all possible maneuverings to buy the ravine in Uyo, which is now owned and has been

owned by the family of the murdered "Submarine" brothers. At the same time, other cult

groups, such as Imeh Albert's Vikings, have been vying for the acquisition of the same

ravine business. And when neither of them got their ways, lives were eliminated as a

consequence, which may explain the root cause of the death of "Submarine" and his brother in

a botched plan to kidnap them in order to extract money--typical mafia and cult style of

doing business.

Akpabio's supporters may try as much as possible to put a white paint on him, but the truth

on the ground now is that governor Akpabio is the most hated man in Akwa Ibom State. The

people he governs are fed up with him. Unemployment among the youths is at all time high,

while members of his family are getting fatter and fatter. At dawn everyone has to remain

indoors for fear of crime, while his cronies are under 24 hour protection by the very police

the people are paying their salaries.

While people are dying of hunger, someone like Nsetip Akpabio (Akpabio's brother) is

junketing the globe daily trying to hide all the money which Akpabio is stealing from the

people's treasury. Akwa Ibom State is now run as if it is a family affair of Akpabio's clan.

Anyone who does government contract in Akwa Ibom State has to purchase materials from

Akpabio's family member. Failure to comply would result in automatic cancellation of the

contract award.

It is no wonder that Akpabio's administration is crumbling. For one thing, many members of

his administration really frowned at his donation of N50 million to Babangida when Akpabio

visited the former Head of State over the death of his wife. His one time supporter, Anietie

Okon, who used to protect Akpabio's interest at the Arik Airline is no longer with the

airline and reports have it that the two are now in a strained relationship. Former

Commissioner Chris Ekong, whom Akpabio lured back to Akwa Ibom State with a promise of

making him a Commissioner again, is now under detention. And Chris Ekong's cult "boys" have

vowed revenge if anything happens to him, which means more kidnappings and more murders are

in the offing.

At the national level, Akpabio's prognosis for his second-term ambition seems darker by the

day. With eventual confirmation of his arch enemy, former Ambassador Sam Edem whom Akpabio

accused of attempting to assassinate him, as the next Chairman of the Independent National

Election Commission, or INEC, one can understand why Akpabio's nerves are beginning to

crack. For sometime, there has been a rift between Goodluck Jonathan and Godswill Akpabio

over ownerships of some oil rigs. If Goodluck Jonathan happens to become the Acting

President of Nigeria, which is highly likely, Akpabio might as well kiss good-bye to his bid

for a second term.

All these problems add up to more reasons why the people of Akwa Ibom State can't wait for

2011 to come, so that they can no longer continue to live with the nightmares that Akpabio's

administration is now imposing upon them. Yes, Akpabio must go, and Akpabio will go, it's

just a matter of time.
