hayzhed:I agree with him. In fact that is what I'm doing. It is all part of the principle of using your appliances well below the specifications with the aim of prolonging their lives. No, I will not spend extra money to pay for expensive charge controller if I have a quality hybrid that I know can do the job. But for someone like me who started my solar journey long ago before hybrid inverters became popular, I found it more convenient and better for my equipment to continue to use my separate charge controllers rather than discarding or selling them off. My hybrid inverter has never been connected to solar panels and continues to stand by as backup if anything happens to my charge controllers. The other reason why you may want to stick to a separate charge controller is if you have a large number of panels that may exceed your hybrid inverter's solar input. I have 10KW panels for example, and my hybrid inverter has about 110A MPPT which is less than the maximum I could get from my panels. Also if your built-in Charge controller is PWM, it is better to get separate MPPT Controller. |

ask4bk:You are right. Lithium based battery chemistries last longer if they are not always getting maximum charge. That is why it is suggested that the best way to protect your laptop and phone batteries is not to charge them beyond 80% or thereabout. Full charges stress lithium batteries. |

But, I don't think that the markup on the so-called "top tier" is worth the presumed increase in yield. I will like to see a more scientific comparison of the panels beyond the instantaneous yields of above 100%. I will want to see more long-term performance comparison. One major problem with measuring efficiency in our setup is that what we get is mostly dependent on our needs, not the efficiency of our panels. On many good days, my batteries are full by mid-day or slightly after. So, my yields can never be a good measure of the performance of my panels. |
FEGEITOK:The argument between top tier solar panels and the lower tier ones is not settled. Some people are of the opinion that what you get per naira is what is most important. If a 300W low tier panel gives me only 70% yield, but costs me only 50% of what I will pay for a top tier 300W panel, isn't the maths already leveling up? |
mank1234:It is simple really. The ratings on the panels were measured under certain conditions which are listed. If those conditions are EXCEEDED, the measured wattage will go up and exceed the label ratings. It is science. I had also briefly seen my yield exceeding the label. And my panels are even 2nd tier Flame solar panels. However, it is also important to recognize that many charge controllers tend to show higher yield than the actual yield. I don't know whether this is a limitation of the measuring equipment or deliberate fraud. |
bassdow:You missed the point. There are mosfets on the boards he was holding. You claimed he wasn't holding mosfets, but right on the boards he held are several mosfets. And there is nothing wrong with replacing these boards instead of wasting valuable time and money chasing individual components on the board. In fact, modern circuit designs are made modular for easy repairability. You may like the hard way, chasing resistors and capacitors around on a board, but many electronics are now better repaired by simply replacing boards. It is the modern way and creates opportunity for quick turn around and reduced downtime. While you are soldering up and down, doing trial and error with capacitors, a card would have been replaced and the client will be back in business. |

azeu73:If you are handy, bring it down and open it. Then fiddle with the display connection (unplug it and plug it back, clean it if you see dusts) and be sure that it is seating well. If that does not solve the problem, the chances are that you have a broken display that needs to be replaced. |

gXtra:Hopefully, but there are equally good, and cheaper fiber options. I use fiber in my own house and I can get something comparable to startlink for less than 50k without FUP, and that is in Ibadan. Lagos should even be better. I understand that people in remote locations may need starlink. I can imagine a few locations in Oyo State where I myself may be forced to cough out the money for starlink. |

On AC vs DC in solar setup I have seen a lot of argument about bypassing inverters and using the DC that comes from your battery directly. The argument is that it is efficient since it bypasses the inverter consumption and the loss due to the back and forth conversion. The problem with this argument is that it is not novel. In fact AC and DC competed for approval when electricity transmission was to start. AC won for many reasons. Anyone interested in the AC vs DC drama between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla can read it up online. The best situation with bypassing the inverter is if your appliances are in the voltage of your battery. That way, there will be no need for any kind of conversion and there will be no loss. In fact this is why a lot of DC appliances were 12V and why most early solar setups were in 12 volts. But 12V is inefficient for high wattage appliances because you end up with high current. The cost of cable to handle such current outweighs potential savings. Moving AC from 110 or 220V to 12V also create greater losses. That is how higher voltage equipment became popular. So, unless you are using appliances that are in the voltage of your batteries, you still end up doing conversion. AC to DC conversion and DC to DC conversions both results in loss of efficiency. So, the idea that powering your equipment with DC is somehow better and more efficient than AC is not a universal truth. Your mileage will vary based on the efficiency of your conversion. With some inverters doing better than 95% efficiency, the argument for any kind of DC-DC conversion becomes difficult to sustain. In addition, DC suffers from the indignity of voltage drop over some distance. From my power house to my server room (about 12m), my 14V source drops to about 11V. In the days of Lead Acid battery when the battery voltage itself can drop to below 12V, my 12V routers used to shut down or become erratic due to voltage drop. I know I could have mitigated the drop with a thick wire, but that will be costlier than buying a sachet inverter to power my routers. So, if you have a normal sized house, DC is not going to serve you well unless you are going to put buck converters in every corner of your house which will increase your costs and increase power loss due to conversion at multiple points. Ultimately, inverters provide better solution than messing around with DC-DC conversion and messing with your electronics. This is not to say that there is no place for using DC in some situations. A few of my gadgets that are in the power room are powered directly with DC from the batteries. My system is 48V so, I got some 12v and 5v step down to power some load including a router. The advantage of that is that if your inverter goes down for any reason, you may still have access to your network for troubleshooting. One time I travelled and my inverter went into protection mode. My people panicked and called me. Because of the things powered directly from the battery including the sachet inverter in the server room, I was able to reach my system, saw that it was the inverter and asked them to restart it. |

bassdow:For you information, I don't sell anything, just a user who is a bit hands-on. The only things I have ever sold to people are my decommissioned equipment. However, if you are okay with burning down your house down because you are trying to save some few naira, that is up to you. I'm just trying to advise others to be careful. It is not everyone that have the means to burn two laptops for meaningless experiments. There is nothing you have described here that have not being accomplished in safer ways. If you want to use DC for your TV, buy a DC TV! Hopefully the only person you endanger is yourself, not your wife and kids. |

People in the house, please read carefully. No follow the advise of @dollarnaira and @bassdow too seriously o. 1. The fact that something "works" does not mean that it is working well. Properly tested and certified electronics sometimes misbehave and burn houses, talk less of things carelessly joined together. 2. Anyone who follows the news will remember the implosion of the Titan submersible many months ago. Five people lost their lives because one foolish man believes his hunch and refused standard testing and certification. 3. I'm a hard core hobbyist and DIY guy myself. I'm a medic, but some think that I'm an engineer, but I understand limits and take precautions. 4. So, please be careful out there. Follow rules and guidelines as much as possible. Those rules and guidelines are borne out of rigorous testing and years of observations with some safety margins built into them. 5. Like they say, things that move around carefully dies, not to talk of the ones that move about carelessly. Mistakes happen. If you stay within the rules, the damages are likely to be less than if you are outside them with untested, unvetted dangerous experimental setup. |
