What to Do if You Have an Infection: At Home Clean your hands often — before you eat or prepare food, after using the bathroom and before and after changing your dressing or bandage. People who live with you should clean their hands often as well. Make sure you know how to care for any wounds or intravenous (IV) "lines," such as a catheter or port, if you have them. Keep wounds clean and change bandages as instructed until the wounds have healed. Routinely clean the surfaces you touch frequently, such as faucets, doorknobs, remote controls, keyboards, telephones, chair and couch arms and kitchen surfaces. Use a commercial wipe or soap and water. Staph and MRSA can spread to others through skin-to-skin contact and by touching surfaces contaminated with the bacteria, such as towels or used bandages.
