From when they crossed Niger into Asaba and entered Benin they met zero opposition from Federal forces. Absence of Federal troops was by design. Gowon was ok with Ojukwu keeping his Biafra. Infact, Northerners were putting plans in place to vacate their soldiers from Southern barracks and return them North. The coup of Jan 66 caught them off guard and they were ready to take their losses and return home, afterall they had exacted their pound of flesh from Ibos, the score was even.

Biafra captured Benin on September 19th without any opposition, but by next day, on 20th, Gowon dispatched troops to free all captured territories.
