Oshidowo One obinna made a fuel tank that could offer 5 times more service than usual. He called it obitank In 2012, four high school teenage students – Adebola, Abiola, Toyin and Eniola invented urine powered generator which could provide safer, affordable and more access to electricity. A litre of urine can power a Gen for 6 hours Kehinde Obasanjo through his creative and innovative spirit built a prototype multi-purpose amphibian jet. He was recognised by governors and presidents. A boy from Bida built a wooden car with a motorcycle engine and got it featured in the last exhibition, the minister also rode in it. A boy from kaduna built a spacecraft. A boy from Enugu constructed an airplane that could take two or three passengers Another set of university of Lagos students invented an eco friendly car. We've heard stories of young boys graduating as the best students in tertiary institutions All these young Nigerians only get a mini fame of recognition that ends as information but remains unsung and discouraged. Thanks to Bello who made the bread seller famous and rich, thanks to the team that returned the fame of Shina Peters, majek and rolling dollars them but there are others that needs more support. Today warri will remain in joyous mood and proud of one of their own who benefited largely in getting locked up doing nothing fantastic. Efe will also be getting additional N50m and another car from a wanted warlord The minute you drive into warri from efurun junction to the creeks you can smell poverty and jobless young and agile youth who needs supports to become responsibly engaged but those who claimed to represent their pain gets selfish with the gains and leave them vulnerable. We only celebrate cheap fame of no positive impact to the society and ignore the chance to help young talented ones to make fame to further encourage them to impact the society fully. Showbiz is good business like every other businesses, Efe and BBnaija had a good deal and good gains, no complain, Nigerians celebrated both with time and resources to ensure its successful. Millions of young boys throng the streets of the north begging and scavenging for food yet they have rich and civilised men and women in their midst. But how about those other talented youths waiting on support and resisting temptation to go into vices like robbery, militancy, thuggery, vandalism and co. Oshidowo seem to be lucrative because government only recognises the bad boys and the people celebrates extensively those that gets busy doing nothing on tv. For a safe society we need to pay attention to these productive youths too and prevent them from getting frustrated over the society direction. They're vulnerable yet they can do better. Supporting the youth is a best form of reducing crimes and best security measures. Think it through. Congratulations Efe and I hope you do better to help some of your own from the benefit of oshidowo. Agboola Odunfa |

REMINDER In the early 50s through the 60s, 70s till the 80s, our leaders will choose a pattern of a cloth and sew about a 100 of same design and fabric then wear it daily so we believe it's just one clothe repeated. This is a gbajue style to portray conservation, economic and moderation so we respect and continue to respect them. Only there death or dirty fights with their opponents that will reveal their true worth when news of properties and companies begin to make news in the open. I have however waited patiently to here anyone notice a similar situation when the news of an ex governor made the list of the ikoyi luxury flats that sells for N260m which we expect the acclaimed money saving governor will only spend less than 10% of that to get a flat in a low cost government estate to practically align with what he. Preached to millions of Nigerians recently but I didn't hear pim from anyone. We Nigerians, especially the social media soldiers seem to be controlled by wind of event and we only feast on the surface for a while enmasse and move to the next good news just like we have shifted attention to the traditional flout Flash between two monarchs that will be settled between them in no time and without our permission. How can a man who made our president sleep in his bed and him as a governor sleep in a N20,000 room with his wife, how can a man who relieved many of their jobs because they're costing the state extra, how can a man who claimed to have saved the state plenty ego on traveling, how can a man whom I flew economy class with in our local flight that he carried his bags amidst push and shoves without being noticed that ihad to commend and take shots with him now made a list of N260m worth flat not duplex o. Even as dash, for who he told us he is, I would have thought he will reject it. Ex governor Peter Obi must rewrite his story in the same manner. He will assemble men of God and intelligent on a live TV then apologize before fixing the missing part of his story so we have a balance. So we know what to buy in 2019. Yes an ex governor can afford a N260m flat or even wristwatch that cost much but not our amiable soft speaking orator who claimed ijebu style of living. I now wonder if it's the leaders that lives many lives by telling their people a different story from what they will tell their party men then live a different life entirely or, the people who condemn, complain, curse bad leaders yet continue to recycle them for a meal. Who is a true patriot? In your best interest : register to vote wisely and don't be fooled again. Shine your mind Agboola Odunfa |
WHY FIGHT THE GOVERNMENT WHEN YOU CAN REPLACE THEM? Democracy as we are thought in schools is a government of the people by the the people for the people! It's simply explicit. People have the power to make or elect the government that will be run by the people elected to their own benefits. If this process fails the people why not replace them with another people? Why fight them when we're not in a revolutionary situation? The law even gave provisions to recall if you can't wait till the next election exercise to recall : Example! The best option is to move for the recall of the legislator as captured in Sections 69 and 110 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Section 69 states thus: “A member of the Senate or of the House of representatives may be recalled as such a member if: there is a presentation to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, a petition in their behalf, signed by more than one -half of the persons registered to vote in that member’s constituency alleging their loss of confidence in that member; and which signatures are duly verified by the Independent National Electoral Commission; the petition is thereafter, in a referendum conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission within ninety days of the date of receipt of the petition, approved by a simple majority of the votes of the persons registered to vote in that member’s constituency.” For the sake of simplicity, the above provision is broken down into the following steps: The electorate must come up with a petition alleging loss of confidence in a law-maker. It should be noted that what is “loss of confidence” is not defined in the constitution and this means there is no need to accuse a lawmaker of any wrongdoing or for a lawmaker to be culpable of any misconduct before the electorate can say they have lost confidence in him; the petition must be signed by more than one-half of the registered voters in that member’s constituency. For example, if a member’s constituency has 1000 registered voters, not less than 501 registered voters must sign the petition; the petition must be submitted to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission; Upon submission, the Independent National Electoral Commission must do the following two things: It must verify the authenticity of the signatures; It must conduct a referendum within ninety days of the receipt of the petition in order to get it approved by a simple majority of the votes of registered persons in that constituency" Fighting the government have too much risk than simply voting. You risk jail, death, national disgrace or permanent solitary. Going by history, some of those human rights activists that fought for us in the pasts are yet to improve our living or national situations because they never provide a better alternative. Though they went to jail and exiles but they became popular and rich. They lead us to hit the streets rather than tell us to go and vote better next time, they lead us into waiting batons and bullets, they make us believe that change can be achieved by rioting and protests, they never told us to go to our constituencies to participate strongly in electioneering. But when they negotiate and withdraw the protests or mellow they won't tell us the deal, we just wait to be called again to fight. Reading a Will of one of the major front runner back in the days, I went through the property that can only be matched by government owned not an individual, no where there states that a portion of it should be given to Nigerians who fought with me to make Nigerian government sit up, yet we still believe in criticism rather than voting. If I were Bruce or Dino, instead of criticising government I'm part of, I wil use my good work in my constituency to inspire young and vibrant youths to join politics and be the change. If I were Reno or Audu! I will use my voice and resources to encourage my friends to vote out bad government in the next election rather than fight and strol to jail everytime then become popular on the other side of the law. I know the law fairly, I can't fight the government but I can vote because I voted to elect, I can vote again to elect better. There's a lot of power in a voter's card. Go grab yours today. In your best interests : save the fight till election day. Agboola Odunfa Youth Political Movement |
POLITICAL SCENARIOS PART THREE COUNTING THE COST- Cost of politics to non politicians Around 2012, political godfather in a south western state once boasted openly that he spent N7B to install a governor and he is ready to spend three times the amount to unseat him, and he did The presence and use of big money in our politics drowns the integrity of our people. That is a major factor that snatches patriotism and conscience from the masses. Political leaders wickedly, intentionally leaves the masses poor, misinformed, uneducated and submissive so they can remain bought every time. The more money you have the more votes you have. Agboism Politics has become so expensive that it takes a lot of money even to be defeated. Will Rogers Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other. Oscar Ameringer In Nigeria, the 1999 constitution (as amended) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria specified in section 225 (1-6) conditions and scrutiny of the sources of funds and expenses of political parties. Section 225 (3)(a) and (b) as well as 225 (4) forbid political parties from foreign funding of any kind. Section 226 (1-3) demands annual reports of account from political parties. By extension, the Electoral Act (2010) stipulates the ceiling of expenses by candidates and political parties for specific elective positions. The maximum limits are pegged at: N1,000,000,000 (naira) for presidential candidates, N200,000,000 for governorship candidates, and N40,000,000 and N20,000,000 respectively for Senate and House of Representatives candidates. Electoral act of 2010 pegged LGA chairman spending at N10, 000, 000 and councillors N1, 000, 000 Scenario in a 260 wards constituency and 356 delegates LGA Chairmanship election There's a range of vote pricing, from minimum of 5k per delegate to like 20k per delegate. That's from N1.85m 2 N7.2m @ 356. delegates. 5k, 20k, that's a given. No delegate goes to the primaries & returns home with nothing. Moneybags pay up to 50k; that's N17Million. After winning the primaries with the N20Million roughly, candidate now moves to see LGA EO (Electoral Officer) & DPO. 2m to each of them. N24M. Thereafter, candidate now pays 250k to 4 radio stations to play jingles & do half hour programs. That's N25M Then comes the "thugs allocation". Candidate gives like 500k to 2 dreaded groups of thugs to be ready for eventualities. That's N26Million Candidate does tours with the thugs & party loyalists spending about 200k each outing. Around 10 Wards that's 2m. N28M. On election day, turnout is mostly very low. Candidate wins. Gives EO & DPO balances of 2m each. That's 32M. Candidate is sworn is as LGA Chairman & uses 1st JAAC grant to recoup N35M. Then uses the JAAC stipends to make profit for a year. After 2 years, Chairman does 1 culvert in each Ward, buys few transformers, delivers cheap drugs to PHCs & small furniture to LEAs. Chairman wins a 2nd term or run for higher office like House of Assembly, House of Reps. source: Kunle Oduah The above calculations are based on normal circumstances which could double or triple in some cases, it however does not guarantee success at the polls. Someone once said in 2003 that the minimum you need to win as state governor is N5b. From the current probes and scandals that reveals heavy funds; we can actually estimate the cost of elections. Now imagine what it will cost to get into higher offices, imagine a good candidate without such funds, imagine a candidate in the hands of godfathers that bankrolls elections, then imagine you and I in politics, imagine why we get what we get from these present crops of politicians. Imagine a political scenario with decent and disciplined voters and candidates. It’s a simple Nigerian political logic: politicians invest heavily in elections, wins and launch elephant projects that hardly gets half completed at about a thousand percent inflated price to cover election costs leaving the people deprived of what they were deceived to get at electioneering campaigns. Political office holders are rumoured to sign contract of allegiance to godfathers to remit as pay comes in from Abuja, so we hear figures and never see projects or physical representation. As they are in chains to their godfathers, we remain in a cage of both parties. They fight or play, we suffer it. Voters will sell votes because of past disappointments, political office holders will deny voter’s dividend as they have cashed upfront, godfathers will lay claim to recouping investments, this keeps the state treasury between our representatives and their godfathers, few will only give some to the masses. A fearless and dramatic godfather in a south western state once asked on TV how he won’t get from the security vote of his governor he installed, a disagreement that showed the governor exit before end of his tenure. Another eastern godfather openly kidnapped a sitting governor over similar issue. Obvious case of open slavery and lack of respect for a constituted authority, can we allow this to continue as we watch Nigeria deteriorate in our eyes and our time. If we can’t benefit the change, we have to prevent our coming generation from experiencing a worse scenarios. Elections have become too lucrative because it costs too much to get elected hence the reason they amass wealth when they win. If you and I get involved purposefully, it won’t cost a thing and dividend will be delivered. We MUST get involved today and gradually grab our glory back. As its not a rocket science, so it is not easy. Series of tutelage level must be undergone while we obtain our Voter’s card ready to vote. Look around you and take a chance to enlighten our people about selling a vote, its a four year mortgage that signs away your rights for the whole season. Always remember! Your vote counts and you don’t have to sell it. Your vote counts! You don’t have to waste it. Vote and be voted for Agboola Odunfa Youth Political Movement |
POLITICAL SCENARIOS PART TWO ELECTIONEERING- The Campaign Gimmicks “ Just the way a playboy will convince his ladies or a ponzi marketer will get their customers to subscribe is same way Electioneering process is being run worldwide. Just an example of motion without progress, words that does not equate action’’ Agboism Electioneering promises has never known to tally governance because promises made during campaigns don’t completely get fulfilled during governance, there is a story to sell and there is a story to deliver which is usually not the same in politics and some goods and services too. As elections draws near, the posters and billboards will adorn every strategic location, well packaged and sweetened messages to catch attention, foot soldiers that will include schemers/canvassers, lobbyists, negotiators, image launderers, buyers and of course thugs that will intimidate or silence all perceived threats even if they are close allies. The bigger players will bring in professionals from high places to manage electioneering campaigns to package the sweet story that touches the soul of a passionate voter. During campaigns, politicians will promise to turn river to milk, water to oil and stone to bread just to win votes, imagine a councillorship aspirant promising to stabilize electricity or a council chairman promising to build bridges and houses for the masses if elected because most electorate are not aware of the role or too afraid to confront and ask how possible nor demand for fulfilment after the election. These professionals research and study then advise parties and candidates the story to tell who where according to the level of needs, civilisation, poverty and political consciousness in a particular constituency. Furthermore, some professional will research to the extent that they will get the promises of past government so they do not repeat same story. This is also a high sale season for the media, especially the press and bloggers who skew and spread the story of how the bad becomes the best we need. Armed robbers will be presented as domestic traders, secondary school dropouts will be presented as a Toronto University graduate, a disgraced civil servant shall become a patriot while a village banished shall be presented as high chief. Its a pure campaign. Money, threats and deaths would have played a major role to silence those that may want to burst the packaged lies that could prevent victory in election. The campaign comes in various shades; some interesting, some gory, some peaceful, some violent, some good to hear and see, some distasteful. In and out of the expected and the unexpected, politicians are only concerned about securing the highest votes. Political parties and candidate that participate in elections will stop at nothing to get the masses support on their side using every method available at their disposal. The politicians will comb all communities and streets just to get votes but will not return until another season (4yrs) of electioneering. Flashback to GEJ promises THE SECOND NIGER BRIDGE: Here were the exact words of President Jonathan when he was campaigning in 2011: “If I don’t deliver the Second Niger Bridge before the end of my tenure, I will leave this country and go and live somewhere else, because the failure cannot be justified . *GAS PROCESSING FACILITY IN DELTA STATE Mr. Jonathan told the people of Delta State he would establish a-$3.5 billion Gas Processing Facility in Obiaruku, Delta State before the end of 2012 to create employment opportunities for the people of Delta State and adjoining states. *A-FOUR -YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR THE NIGER DELTA: President Jonathan is an Ijaw man and so when he promised during the 2011 electioneering campaign that he would establish a 4-year Development Master plan that would build roads and bridges and open up the inter land in the Niger Delta Area where he comes from, his people believed him. *FREE TRADE ZONE IN KOKO: President Jonathan told the people of Koko in Delta State that he shared their plight during his electioneering campaign in Delta State. Koko is the unfortunate town in Delta State where toxic wastes were dumped over 20 years ago so when Mr. Jonathan told the Koko people he would establish a Free Trade Zone in their area to create job opportunities, they believed him. *COMPLETION OF ILESHA WATER SCHEME IN OSUN STATE: Jonathan went to OsunStae and at the palace of the Aromolaran of Ijesha Land, the Paramount Ruler of Ijesha Land, he assured the people he would use federal power and financial muscle to complete the town’s Water Scheme. *ILE-IFE-IJESHA WATER DAM: In nearby Ile-Ife, Mr. Jonathan went to yet another revered royal father, the Oni of Ife and addressed the townsfolk that he would ensure the completion of the Ile-Ife and Ilesha Water Dam before the end of his first term. *WATER SCHEME FOR TARABA STATE: Campaigning in Jalingo in 2011 as he criss-crossed Nigeria soliciting for votes, Jonathan promised adequate and uninterrupted water supply to the people of the state. Another lie! *MAKE PLATEAU STATE THE MINING CAPITAL OF NIGERIA: At a campaign stop in Plateau State while soliciting for votes, President Jonathan assured the people of Plateau State that he would create job opportunities for them through the development of the mining potentials of the state. Flashback to PMB promises CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT Initiate action to amend the Nigerian Constitution with a view to devolving powers, duties, and responsibilities to states in order to entrench true Federalism and the Federal spirit, Amend the Constitution to remove immunity from prosecution for elected officers in criminal cases ELECTORAL REFORM Strengthen INEC to reduce, if possible, eliminate electoral malpractices in Nigerian’s political life REFORM THE JUDICIARY Reform and Strengthen the Justice System for efficient administration and dispensation of justice with the creation of special courts for accelerated hearing of corruption, drug trafficking, terrorism and similar cases of national importance; INSURGENCY Bring permanent peace and solution to the insurgency issues in the North-East; the Niger Delta; and other conflict prone states and areas such as Plateau, Benue, Bauchi, Borno, Abia, Taraba, Yobe, and Kaduna in order to engender national unity and social harmony; ECONOMY Make our economy one of the fastest growing emerging economies in the world with a real GDP growth averaging at least 10-12% annually 4. As at 1999, Nigerian rate of unemployment stood at about 8%, today it is estimated from official statistics to be close to 30 WELFARE Create a Social Welfare Program of at least Five Thousand Naira (N5000) that will cater for the 25 million poorest and most vulnerable citizens upon the demonstration of children’s enrolment in school and evidence of immunisation to help promote family stability. EXCHANGE RATE Equate N1.00 to $1.00 Based on the promises above, you determine which was fulfilled and which satsfy your conscience on your last decision at the polls. CONCLUSION The people continue to hear what they should have or benefit from the government every season but never get it, we are good listeners and passionate believer that things will get better so we never bother to request for actualization of electoral promises from politicians. We sit, listen, accept and vote as usual or abstain as usual. Many of us voters see politicians as messiah, gods or the dreaded so questioning promises or demanding fulfilment seem like a taboo or offense that may bring trouble to us, so we eat the pie they sell to us every season and leave it like that. Business as usual cant remain the usual, if the change we need is important to us, if we are truly unsatisfied with the way things are, it’s about time we identify the responsibilities and limits of every public office holders and evaluate every candidates that may want to approach us for votes so we can counter their claims and question their past before we cast that vote which is a four year investment. In every election, opportunities always represent itself to correct last season mistake but we never learn or show concern ant it leaves us with old terrible choices and sometimes worse, we don’t define or determine what we actually want. Be the change you need, obtain your voter’s card and vote wisely, the time has come for you and high to correct the wrongs of our forefathers. This is in our collective best interest. PART ONE PROPAGANDA – The mind control. All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume. Noam Chomsky If people in the media cannot decide whether they are in the business of reporting news or manufacturing propaganda, it is all the more important that the public understand that difference, and choose their news sources accordingly. Thomas Sowell Sadly, all over the world, propaganda remained the only good tool employed to kill the selling points of a winning market, especially in politics. It is a form of strong communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population or someone against another. Propaganda is a wicked and deliberate, systematic attempt to shape your thoughts, belief or perceptions and manipulate your understanding to change your behaviour so that the propagandist can achieve the needed support and attention. Propaganda is the best device employed by opportunists during electioneering campaigns to undermine the sitting government. That is when ignorant social media critics, brainwashed foot soldiers, master propagandist, a professional character assassinator heavily backed and financed by some set of greedy politicians takes the centre stage. The sole purpose of propaganda in the hands of the opposition is to mislead, misinform, manipulate and aggressively recruit us to have sympathy for them and hatred for the government of the day. Opposition invest handsomely in propaganda to discredit the government of the day using the best media only to take over the government, not to offer something better. People worldwide are usually hungry for information, gossips and negative kind of information to feed on which is a good catch for the opposition to latch on. Opponents are strong in politics and can pay anyone any amount to buy negative information so as to use for character assassination or discrediting the credibility of their targets. Politicians rarely offer the electorates real deliverables during campaigns because they always tell us what they think we like to hear, how bad the other government is, how fake their project has been, how wicked their laws are then they offer to turn bread to stone for us, build a link bridge connecting Africa and western world where we can travel free. The real votes are in the hands of the poor, uninformed, uncivilized and of course those that lacks basic infrastructures like electricity or media to double check their sweet stories. They sell hatred to the religious and the tribes men to make them seem how marginalized they have been without proposing a real and obtainable replacement. The irritating confusion is that, while the opposition is selling “change” the incumbent will sell continuity and both teams will sell propaganda and lies only to grab the available seats. This in turn leaves many undecided or misled on Election Day. They know our only source of information or knowledge is the press, the best journalists and bloggers are employed to constantly occupy our media space with alarming and confusing stories to win our attention and see angels in devils vice versa. They move from the press to top and popular politicians coming out to add untrue voices to further push down these stories to ensure it lands well in our bellies, then they move in to communities and families, each camp will choose vocal and popular champions who will vigorously lead the propaganda at the grassroots by word of mouths which many times splits alliance in families, compounds, streets and union which many times leads to crisis that leaves many causalities dead or wounded only to pass “a must accept” stories. There is no known good propaganda because its mostly lies to create misinformation that is misleading in nature. They simply hack into your minds and change the calculations for selfish benefits. There are ready teams worldwide that specializes in this propaganda business and they are not cheap, politicians will rather invest in this in high desperation to win that spend half of it to develop his immediate community and tell them the truth. The truth itself has lost its glory to the people from politicians because what they say becomes unrealisable, they will rather lie, skip dividend, save the money for another election season to invest in propaganda and buy votes. However, this tool continue to work because we are too weak, lazy and afraid to get involved in politics, politicians knows that we have summarily tagged politics as dirty and abandoned it to the dirty politicians, so they get dirty and play dirty but the catch is they fool us by coming clean to get our clean votes the dirty way to make clean and selfish gains abandoning us to our dirty fate and clean style of not wanting to get dirty. Politics is only dirty because i and you abstained from politics today and left it in the hands of the dirty, every season we invest our votes on them with no dividends yet accumulating loss over loss embarrassingly. We claim to be enlightened and smart yet we fall to the constant propaganda and brainwashing of these politicians that brought us here. We do not give ourselves the chance to reason that a no vote and a wrong vote is a complete loss for a whole season. Knowledge is becoming easy and an eye opener for us all, its time to be the change and make a difference. in your best interests; Vote and be voted for! Agboola Odunfa Youth Political Movement |

We vote during elections and go home to wait for miracles to happen without going a step further to ensure their promises are kept. Questions! Do you know your leaders? Who is your concillor? Who is your council chairman? Who is your state assembly rep? Who is your national assemble rep or senator? Who is your governor? Who is your president? Have your identified and built a relationship with them? What effort have you done to remind them of their promises? Let's educate ourselves and others with the duties and limits of every elected representatives. Let's encourage ourselves to identify our respective leaders and initiate a relationship with them via any good means in group eg CDAs, resident associations, clubs etc. Let's remind them of their electoral promises and duties, its our rights. Let's assume they don't know nor have an idea on where to start or how to go about it. Let's advise and offer our helps. Let's accept them as constitutional leaders even if they are not those we voted in. Its only by doing this that we are fulfilled and have the right to complain or condemn or praise them as we have played our role in democracy even if they don't listen or do as we have asked. 400 Nigerian prisoners in British jails to be sent home Newsvine! Nigerian prisoners in British jails to be sent home Hundreds of Nigerian prisoners are to be sent home to serve out their sentences in Nigeria to ease the pressure on British jails. Up to 400 prisoners are being repatriated when the British government reached a deal with Nigeria after months of negotiating. The move paves the way for hundreds more criminals to be deported. Gordon Brown has vowed that thousands of prisoners from Nigeria, Vietnam and China will be sent home as “expeditiously as possible”. An agreement has already been signed with Jamaica, which tops the list of foreign nationals in jails in England and Wales, although only a limited number of the 1,400 Jamaicans in British prisons will be returned home. The scale of the problem facing the Government was disclosed shortly after Mr Brown took over in 2007. Figures were released showing that only 136 foreign national prisoners were repatriated in 2005, while 9,610 foreign nationals started jail terms in England and Wales. It also emerged that prisoners from two jails reserved exclusively for foreign nationals were released early to ease prison overcrowding. Some 21 foreign nationals held in Bullwood Hall and Canterbury jails were released 18 days early under the Ministry of Justice’s emergency early release scheme. Deals on repatriation are being sought with Nigeria, Vietnam and China which account for afurther 1,700 inmates. Until recently prisoners had to consent to repatriation, but ministers have scrapped the rule and hope to increase substantially the number being sent home to serve their jail terms. Jamaica has 1,400 foreign prisoners in British cells, Nigeria has more than 1,000, while Vietnam and China have 400 and 300 prisoners in British jails. However, before any deals can be concluded, ministers need assurances that sentences imposed by the British courts will be enforced fully in the home states. It is also likely to be difficult to reach a deal with China, which already refuses to take back failed asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants. |
When you're in love you never really know whether your elation comes from the qualities of the one you love, or if it attributes them to her; whether the light which surrounds her like a halo comes from you, from her, or from the meeting of your sparks. ~Natalie Clifford Barney |
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D — others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Would you have been the perfect date in another decade? Celebrating a quiet Valentine's Day at home? History.com brings you 15 of the best romances of all time. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman 'lottery' system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap |

Mother of hip-hop sensation, Innocent Idibia, aka Tuface, can’t wait to see her son bring a wife home. The superstar’s mom, Mrs Rose Idibia, while featuring on a TV personality show, Moments With Mo monitored at the weekend, said her topmost request from her son now is for him to get married. Tuface was actually the main guest on the celebrity show when the anchor Mo Abudu, to the singer’s surprise, brought his mom unto the set. The presenter soon asked the singer about his plans for marriage, but he didn’t give a satisfactory response. The anchor then turned to his mom, seeking her opinion on the question; to which Mrs Idibia responded: “Right now he (Tuface) knows my stand on that. And that of course is that he should settle down.” Tuface, grabbing his delectable mom’s hand, then quipped to the audience: “Eh you my people, I hope say I go find wife wey fine like my mom.” And the audience responded in thunderous laughter. Remarking on her look-alike son’s rise to stardom, Mrs Idibia expressed little surprise, recalling that: “he (Tuface) was full of pranks as a child.” Tuface’s several love affairs have been the subject of gossips around town. The charming singer has five kids from three different women (Pero Adeniyi, Sumbo Ajaba and Annie Macaulay) – two kids each from Adeniyi and Ajaba. But the singer recently declared in an interview that he has no plans to marry any of the trio, while also saying he won’t have more kids. The scandals dogging the philandering star have, however, not hampered his soaring fame, winning several local and international acclaims. The former lead singer of the group, Plantashun Boiz, was late last year honoured at the World Music Awards, in Monaco, France , where he emerged the Best Selling Nigerian Artiste. His first two solo efforts – Face 2 Face and Grass 2 Grace – which reportedly jointly sold 10 million copies, earned him the latest award. The artiste had earlier in 2007 won the MTV Europe Awards, in the Best African Artiste category, courtesy of his soar-away track, African Queen. The singer, who now has his own record label, Hypertek, recently released a new work, Unstoppable – a 19-track effort, which includes a duet with American R&B star, R.Kelly. |
