Governors in South East, Nigeria, have written to President Muhammadu Buhari asking him to ban the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the region, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the governors are also asking the President to delay the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and act against insecurity instead.

Igbere TV had reported that the Federal Government, last week, said it was shutting down the Enugu airport for “major repairs” on the “faulty” runway.

This is even as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced that it was degrading the airport for international operations owing to its “runway length”.

But in the letter made available to Igbere TV on Wednesday, the governors are asking the President to rather approve its earlier decision banning herders who have no cattle, as well as the movement of cattle by foot in the South East.

The move is coming three days after Senator Ike Ekweremadu, from the region, was attacked in Germany, by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to the governors, they decided to make the letter public to assuage public allegations that they were not doing enough to check growing insecurity in the region.

Recall that the IPOB had accused the South East governors and other top political leaders in the region of sell out, saying they have never acted on insecurity in the zone.

“We plead with Mr. President that we publish this letter to assuage our people’s feelings who erroneously think that no efforts are being made by the leaders of the South East to tackle insecurity and economic challenges facing the zone and to let them know that her leaders before now have been working very hard without making noise as issues of security must not be discussed in the public,” the letter partly read.

The letter was signed by Mr. David Umahi, Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, on behalf of other governors in the region.

PoliticsCourt Voids Uche Nwosu’s Candidacy In Imo State Gov Election by AgencyReport(op): 8:31pm On Aug 20, 2019
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to delete the name of Uche Nwosu as governorship candidate in the last election held in Imo State, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that Nwosu, son-in-law to former governor Rochas Okorocha, was the candidate of Action Alliance (AA) in the Imo State 2019 governorship election.

Presiding judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, on Tuesday, voided Nwosu’s candidacy on the grounds of double nomination by two political parties, AA and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court said that the double nomination (of Nwosu) by both parties, was in violation of section 37 of the Electoral Act.

The court ruled that Nwosu was a candidate of both APC and AA, that after the primaries, he obtained a court order, recognising him as APC candidate for the guber poll.

The court said that the judgement (issued by Abuja High Court) was still subsisting having not been vacated by a higher court when Nwosu emerged the candidate of AA in the same election.

Justice Ekwo noted that Nwosu participated in the APC’s primaries held on October 6, 2018 and was subsequently nominated as the party’s governorshndidate. And on on Oct. 9, 2018, he obtained an order of the FCT High Court, recognising him as the valid candidate of the party.

In the midst of this, Uche Nwosu was also offered the governorship ticket of the AA.

The judge ruled that it was illegal in the eyes of the law, for Uche Nwosu to have allowed himself to be nominated by both the APC and AA.

“It is hereby declared that the nomination of Uche Nwosu by APC and AA is invalid, null and void and constitute violation of section 37 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended)”, Justice Ekwo ruled.

JUST IN: “Hard Times Await Oil Thieves, Pipeline Vandals” - NNPC

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has declared that “hard times” awaits oil bunkers and pipeline vandals across the country, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the NNPC made the declaration during the official signing of partnership deal with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

The Corporation said the aim of the partnership deal with the security agency, is “towards making business hard for pipeline vandals in the country”.

In a statement obtained by Igbere TV, the Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, applauded the NDDC for securing the pipelines for transportation of petroleum products from one asset to another petroleum asset.

“I want to applaud the NSCDC for contributing their quota towards protection and security of our pipelines”, he said.

Represented by the Chief Operating Officer, Downstream, Engr. Adeyemi Adetunji, Kyari

The statement which was issued by the group’s Spokesman, Ndu Ughamadu, disclosed that “as part of efforts to rid the nation of the menace of pipeline vandalism, the new management was putting in place a performance-based pipeline protection system to enable relevant security stakeholders to live up to their billings.”

He noted that the NSCDC would declare a date of the year that would soon be announced as an anti-pipeline vandalism day as part of concerted efforts to create more awareness on the dangers of pipeline vandalism to the national economy.

PoliticsIPOB: APC Blames PDP Over Attack On Ekweremadu In Germany by AgencyReport(op): 6:13pm On Aug 19, 2019
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has blamed opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had reported that Senator Ekweremadu was physically assaulted and publicly disgraced in Germany, on Saturday, by members of the IPOB.

The former Deputy Senate President was invited as a guest speaker at the 2nd Annual Igbo Cultural Festival in Nuremberg, Germany, when the assault took place.

In a statement obtained by Igbere TV, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Isa-Onilu described members of IPOB as “unworthy in character” while he equally described their actions as “despicable.”

He said the physical attack on Senator Ekweremadu was “an indecent action”, adding that it was below the acceptable standard of behaviour expected of citizens of Nigeria whether home or abroad.

The APC accused the main opposition party of promoting the agenda of IPOB before it was proscribed by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“It is however regrettable that some of the people and organizations who had offered these irresponsible elements open support in the past are raising their voices now.

“It will be recalled that the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its leaders chose to play politics over a matter that called for collective patriotic actions when IPOB raised a terror group in the South East.

“It is clear that PDP and its other shortsighted co-travelers who were the main cheerleaders of IPOB owe this country an apology. IPOB hid under regional identity to perpetrate criminality having recruited some misguided elements and miscreants”, the statement partly read.

The APC also claimed that Senator Ekweremadu was brutalised because the PDP politicians have “become myopic and allow narrow sentiments becloud their sense of judgement.”

It further stated that all Nigerians, irrrespective of political affiliations, “have a responsibility to collectively rise against evil wherever we find it and in whatever guise it appears.”

“We hope lessons have been learnt from this unfortunate incident”, the statement added.

A 59-year-old legal practitioner based in Edo State, Mr Ogedengbe Ayodeji, has landed in prison over a fake news he shared on his Facebook timeline, Igbere TV reports.

PoliticsPresidency Speaks On Ban Of Importation Of Food Items, Advises Importers by AgencyReport(op): 7:35pm On Aug 18, 2019
The Presidency, on Sunday, said that it has neither banned nor restricted importation of food items into the country, Igbere TV reports.

This was in reaction to the controversy an order by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had generated in the media.

Igbere TV reports that President Buhari had directed the CBN to stop providing foreign exchange for importation of food items into the country.

But reacting in a statement made available to Igbere TV, the Presidency said such directive does not amount to an outright restriction on the importation of food items.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu stressed that any importers of food items that wished to source their FOREX from non-government financial institutions were free to do so.

The Presidential Spokesman was replying to a report in FINANCIAL TIMES Newspaper, published with the title, “Muhammadu Buhari sparks dismay over policy shift on food imports”, published on 15th August 2019.

Full Statement,

“Your article “Muhammadu Buhari sparks dismay over policy shift on food imports” (15 August) suggests the Nigerian Government is restricting the import of agricultural products into the country.

“This is simply incorrect. To be absolutely clear, there is no ban – or restriction – on the importation of food items whatsoever.

“President Buhari has consistently worked towards strengthening Nigeria’s own industrial and agricultural base. A recent decision sees the Central Bank maintain its reserves to put to use helping growth of the domestic industry in 41 product sectors rather than provide FOREX for the import of those products from overseas.

“Should importers of these items wish to source their FOREX from non-government financial institutions (and pay customs duty on those imports – increasing tax-take, something the FT has berated Nigeria for not achieving on many occasions) they are freely able to do so.

“Diversification of FOREX provision towards the private sector and away from top-heavy government control, a diversification of Nigeria’s industrial base, and an increase in tax receipts – are all policies one might expect the Financial Times to support.

“Yet for reasons not quite clear, the author and this newspaper seem to believe the president’s administration seeks to control everything – and yet do so via policies that relinquish government control.

“We look forward to the next instalment of Mr. Munshi’s bizarre and puzzling article series.”

Politics‘Igbos Hiding Under Herdsmen To Commit Atrocities In South-East’ - Ohaneze by AgencyReport(op): 6:07pm On Aug 18, 2019
Ohaneze Ndigbo has alleged that some Igbos are taking advantage of the attack of herdsmen in the South-East to kidnap and murder innocent citizens in the region, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the group also lamented how Igbo traditional rulers and vigilante groups are abetting the killers in the region.

In a statement obtained by Igbere TV and issued by Chief Nnia Nwodo, President of Ohanaeze, the group claimed that Southern Nigeria had witnessed very unusual security breaches.

He, however, praised the actions of security personnel in the region while calling on traditional rulers to complement the efforts to keep Southern Nigeria secured by handing over killers and kidnappers in their communities to relevant authorities.

“Assassinations, kidnapping and invasion of one or two holy places have been reported in the social and regular media.

“Worthy of note is the arrest of those responsible for the murder of two Catholic priests and the kidnap of a Traditional ruler. Useful confessions have been made. As we speak 1,700 forest guards are being recruited. New access roads are being constructed into desolate and hidden areas of our forests.

“Ohaneze also notes that a few miscreants among us have exploited the Fulani rampage to engage in kidnapping and murder of innocent citizens.

“We urge our traditional rulers, town unions and local vigilantes to fish them out and hand them over to law enforcement agencies”, the statement partly read.

PoliticsBREAKING: Ohaneze Reveals Identity Of Ekweremadu’s Attackers In Germany by AgencyReport(op): 5:22pm On Aug 18, 2019
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, has reacted to the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had reported that the immediate past Deputy Senate President was attacked and disgraced by aggrieved members of IPOB at an event in Germany, on Saturday.

The Enugu West Senator who was attending the 2nd Annual Igbo Cultural Festival as Guest Speaker at the event organised by the Igbo Community in Germany, was beaten up and publicly humiliated.

In a statement sent to Igbere TV on Sunday by OYC Secretary-General, Okwu Nnabuike, he said the group had identified the sponsors of the attack and would soon expose them.

The Ohaneze Youth said its investigation showed that the action of the IPOB members and their pay masters was all about the 2023 elections.

“This is an affront not just on Ekweremadu but on Ndigbo, which Ekweremadu represents. It is on record that Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu has put his very best in championing Igbo interest in and out of the National Assembly.

“It is therefore a slap on our face for anyone to visit such animalistic treatment on him under whatever guise.

“From our investigation, we understand that this is all about 2023, but we shall soon expose the politicians behind this dance of shame. They hid under the IPOB to perpetrate this global shame.

“On the part of IPOB, for allowing itself to be used, it has touched the tail of a lion. Indeed this shall not be taken for granted.

“If IPOB so love Ndigbo as it claims, what strategy has it put in place to checkmate the excesses of the herdsmen in Igbo land? We repeat, their action was purely sponsored by politicians and they should get ready to hear from us”, the statement partly read.
