The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that former Aviation Minister Femi Fani Kayode and his wife Sonia operated an Access Bank account which had two Biometric Identification Numbers linked to fifteen other accounts in Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) and two others in Diamond Bank. In a statement late Monday night, the EFCC claimed that contrary to reports that Mrs Fani-Kayode was detained by the Commission, she was intercepted by the bank for trying to make withdrawals from an Access Bank account that had been placed on 'Post No Debit' Category, following the discovery of illicit cash flows into the account. The EFCC statement which was signed by the Head, Media & Publicity Wilson Uwujaren reads thus; “Contrary to the media spin about the purported arrest of mother and child, a certain Chikwendu Sonia today attempted to withdraw money from an Access Bank account that had been placed on 'Post No Debit' Category, following the discovery of illicit cash flows into the account. “She was intercepted by the bank while the Commission was notified but because it was late, the EFCC advised that the suspect be taken to the police station for processing and release on bail. “They were arranging to take the suspect to the police station when Governor Ayo Fayose stormed the bank with thugs and his personal security and forcefully secured the release of the suspect, with claims that the EFCC had no power to detain anybody in his state. He also vowed to close down the branch of the bank. “The said account, which had a balance of N 2,307,712.82 was flagged following investigation into the PDP Joint Trust fund when the Commission traced N1.1billion to the Zenith Bank account of Fani-Kayode. It was discovered that the account had two biometric identification numbers, one for Fani-Kayode and the other (with BVN 2205597283) for Sonia Chikwendu. The same BVN is linked to 2 other accounts in Diamond bank and 15 accounts in Guaranty Trust Bank.” http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/fani-kayode-and-wife-operated-15-accounts-in-one-bank-efcc/167403.html

Nigeria does not know the exact amount of her money looted and kept in foreign countries, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Alhaji Abubakar Malami (SAN) has said. The Minister stated this over the weekend at a media roundtable on the Open Government Partnership (OGP) held in his office. According to the AGF, “it is impossible to give you the exact figures against the background of the complexity of the issues surrounding the recovery of the funds, investigative process is ongoing, it is changing by the minutes, by the hour, changing by the day, depending on the circumstances. So against the background of the dynamism, conflicts of law at the international level we cannot give a categorical figure but that does not mean that we do not have an idea of the case by case.” Read more at http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/fg-doesn-t-know-total-looted-funds-malami/167079.html#Tt6lHDMzIi15GMcc.99

A Lawyer, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, has slammed a N50bn suit against President Muhammadu Buhari, the Department of State Services and its Director-General, Lawal Daura, along with others for allegedly violating the rights of judges whose houses were raided by DSS operatives between October 8 and 9. Named as co-defendants in the suit are the Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the National Judicial Council. According to the plaintiff, the arrest of the judges without recourse to the NJC was unlawful and amounted to humiliating them. The lawyer is sueing on behalf of five of the arrested judges who are still in active service, namely, Justices Ngwuta, Okoro, Ademola, Pindiga and Dimgba. The plaintiff contended in his suit that the raid on the residences of the judges and their arrest was unconstitutional, adding that the arrest of the judges did not follow the law. He said the DSS operations violated the rights of judges under sections 33, 34, 35, 36, and 41 of the Constitution. The plaintiff sought 10 prayers, among which is an order awarding N50bn against the defendants as “general and exemplary damages”. He is praying for an order compelling the DSS to return to the judges the sums of money recovered from them. He also sought perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from arresting, inviting, intimidating, or harrassing the judges with respect to the case. The DSS had, between Friday and Saturday, arrested Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro of the Supreme Court; Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja, and Justice Muazu Pindiga of the Federal High Court, Gombe Division. Justice Nnnamdi Dimgba’s residence was also searched but he was not arrested. Others who were arrested had been placed on suspension by the NJC pending the President Buhari and their various state governors would approve its recommendation for their sacking. They are a former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike, the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Tsamiya; and judge of the Kano State High Court, Justice Kabiru Auta. The DSS said it recovered large sums of money in Nigerian and foreign currencies from three of the judges during the raid on the houses of the seven judicial officers. All the seven of them had since been released on personal recognisance by the DSS. The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank, has said that comments made by the wife of the President Aisha Buhari, was not meant to discredit the present administration but to sound a note of caution for the betterment of Nigerians and the country at large. The APC chieftain, in a statement on Friday, warned opponents of the APC administration not to rejoice or misinterpret the interview, adding that the president’s wife spoke the minds of many party men and women who felt sidelined in the present government. “I think Mrs. Buhari deserves commendation because she is actually speaking the minds of not only the party members but Nigerians,” Mr. Frank said. “What Mrs. Buhari has said is not different from what some of us have been saying that it is high time the President shake-up his cabinet and bring in people who understand the manifesto of the party and could help the party deliver on its change mantra, especially, the economy of the country that needs an urgent attention. “Some of our leaders like the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, have made this same observation in the past and I think they meant well for the administration and the country. I will also join them in appealing to the president to do the needful,” he said. “Nigerian women in politics and other wives of president in the world have a lot to learn from what Mrs. Buhari has done. We should not forget in a hurry that this is what the former first lady Mrs. Patience Jonathan failed to do to her husband when few people hijacked his government and brought the government down.” The APC spokesperson also called on the president to act fast and correct some of the abnormalities currently threatening the existence of the party. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/212820-apc-spokesperson-hails-aisha-buharis-cabinet-hijack-comment.html

Boko haram are wicked people!see the way they make this girls look like old schools.... |
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central), yesterday said he linked the Swiss government with commanders of Boko Haram for release of the Chibok girls. Speaking on the release of 21 Chibok schoolgirls on Thursday, Sani said he established contact with the Swiss government through their embassy in 2014 but that the arrangement yielded no result then because of the lackadaisical attitude of former president Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. “In the course of looking for a mediator, I first went to the European Union, then British Embassy and then Saudi Arabia. Vehemently, Saudi Arabia rejected involvement. It was after all these efforts failed that I contacted the Swiss government through their embassy, “he said. Sani, a human rights activist who took former president Olusegun Obasanjo in 2011 to the sect in a bid to broker truce, said the Swiss government accepted the offer. He said he linked the Swiss government officials with Barrister Mustapha Zannah who served as a negotiator. In the course of the deal, he said he brought the International Community of the Red Cross (ICRC) into the arrangement. “It all started in 2014. It was at that time that the foundation was laid but the last administration was unwilling to implement the deal,” he said. He said when the Director General of the Department of State Services(DSS), Malam Lawal Daura, was contacted, he agreed with the arrangements. On the method used, Sani said: “It is not good to disclose the method used because most of the girls are still with the sect”. Asked when the remaining girls would be released, he said, “I’m very optimistic that it will be soon. The confidence has been built and the foundation has been laid. In no time, the rest will be freed.” Read more at http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/chibok-girls-how-i-helped-negotiate-swap-with-boko-haram--shehu-sani/166847.html#mbKkDZIvLeMBzHVA.99

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism on the release of more of the kidnapped Chibok girls, after 21 of them were freed by Boko Haram Thursday, following more than two years of captivity. Speaking at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday in Berlin, President Buhari said negotiations will continue until all the girls secure their freedom. “On the Chibok girls, we have been able to secure the release of 21 of them, so over 100 more are still in the hands of the terrorists somewhere in the Lake Chad Basin area which include Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. “In getting this 21 out, we hope we will get enough intelligence to go about securing the rest of them. “We are very grateful to the UN for their participation in trying to secure the release of these girls. “Please don’t forget that as a result of terrorism in Nigeria, no fewer than 37,000 Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram. “Right now we have about 2 million people in IDP camps, 60 per cent of them are women and children and 60 per cent of those children are orphaned. “This is a major challenge for government; we have to provide infrastructure especially for education and health, take them back to their villages and towns and reintegrate them so that they can have normal life,” he said. The president thanked the German government for their humanitarian assistance and support for Nigeria in dealing with the effects of terrorism. Responding to a question on the BBC interview with his wife, Aisha, the president said his wife and the opposition needed to appreciate the depth of the problems he met on the ground. He caused laughter at the press conference when he said: “I claim superior knowledge compared to her and the opposition,” referring to his three attempts at the polls to become president of Nigeria over a 12-year period, succeeding in the fourth attempt. He also said; “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room”. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/212797-plan-free-chibok-girls-buhari.html
