A Witness, Richard Ihediwa, told a Federal High Court on Thursday that embattled Olisa Metuh, solely funded publicity activities during Jonathan’s re-election campaign. Metuh, a former National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is being tried for alleged N400 million money laundering. He said that it came to a point that the ‘situation room’ was not funded by the party, and Metuh decided to pick up the burden and funded the activities of the publicity team from his pocket. The witness said the financial status of the publicity arm was so bad that it got to a point that they could no longer pay companies that ran adverts for them. He told the court that it was so bad that he contemplated resigning his position because the work load was too much for him to carry. “But Metuh begged and asked me to understand that the office was not funded. “That was when it was decided that extra hands be hired but he (Metuh) said he will pay them from his pocket. “The nature of our schedule was so tight that I literally broke down because of pressure of work. I couldn’t cope because I was alone. “I told Metuh I would not be able to continue except he hired other professionals. “He reminded me that funding was an issue in the party and said he had severally made a case to the national working committee to no avail. The Vice Chairman of Anka Local Government Area in Zamfara, Alhaji Yahuza Ibrahim, has allegedly been kidnapped. The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Mustapha Muhammad, disclosed this to newsmen in Anka on Wednesday. Muhammad, who was in tears, said he received the report of the incident from the victim’s home village, Wiya, in the early hours of Wednesday. He said eye witnesses from Ibrahim’s village said gunmen drove into the settlement on Tuesday night and fired gunshots into the air before they took away the vice chairman. He said shortly after he received the report, he got a phone call from a hidden number in which a male voice spoke to him in Hausa language and asked for a ransom of N5 million to facilitate the safe release of the victim. “It was then that we realised that the kidnap was real and had been carried out by bandits who hide in the nearby bushes,” the chairman said. He said he had already reported the matter to the state government as well as all security agencies in the state. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Muhammad Shehu, however, said he could not confirm or deny the report because he was on his way back to the state from a trip. “What could a leader do to effectively lift a people out of the depths of poverty, and enable them to achieve prosperity? After much soul searching, I concluded that: wealth is a creation of the human mind properly prepared by education.” “Most violent crises in Africa can be traced to a lack of education and opportunities among its teeming youth population. The issue of youth entrepreneurship in Africa is very critical, as Africa is the only continent in which we will witness a population boom” “Any nation that does not spend its wealth and resources to develop the capacity of its youth will be forced to use them to fight insecurity.” “As a leader, you can decide through your policies to educate the youths, or face the consequences of failing to do so.” “Despite incredible challenges, Nigerian youths are achieving great things and placing Nigeria positively in the world map. They inspire us. We identified Nollywood as a sector that can employ many young people and provided a grant of $200 million to boost the industry. As a result, Nollywood became a major contributor to our GDP and in 2014, the industry contributed 1.4% to our GDP” “Under my watch, Nigeria was projected by CNN Money to be the third fastest growing economy in the world for the year 2015. Nigeria was rated as the largest economy in Africa and the 23rd in the world by the World Bank and the IMF, with a GDP above US$570 billion. A growth that proved the truism that a nation's wealth is not underneath the ground but between the ears of her people.” “As a leader, you need resources to develop your nation and sometimes you have to navigate through the competing interests of western powers.” “While serving as President of Nigeria, I worked for the next generation and not for the next elections. I have no regrets for what I did. Somebody must sacrifice and work for the next generation otherwise your children's children will suffer the same predicaments as you have.” “On the issue of corruption, you are aware that several matters are pending in court and I would not like to interfere with the legal processes. We reformed the institutions and introduced various mechanisms to stop the corruption problems in our country without publicity.” “I urge contemporary African leaders to see youth entrepreneurship as a collective project transcending national boundaries.” Read more at http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/10-quotes-from-president-goodluck-jonathan-s-speech-at-oxford-university/168526.html#OOxLi0CyeaEUOlTT.99

Ekiti State chapter of the peoples Democratic Party has called on President Mahammadu Buhari to immediately set up a probe panel to investigate the bribery allegations made against the Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi by Justices Sylvester Agwata and Nyang Okoro. The party said the call became imperative especially now that the president has put the judiciary on test of integrity, adding that the probe of allegations against Amechi will go to a certain extent to determine the culpability of individuals who might have been involved. The publicity secretary of PDP, Mr Jackson Adebayo, in a statement said President Buhari should be courageous enough to look into allegations against his men for Nigerians to change their opinions that his fight against corruption is selective and vindictive. Adebayo said when judges of the highest court in the country are revealing how Amechi had tried to influence judgement by offering bribe which they rejected and the next thing was arrest and detention of the judges, the president should not pretend as if nothing is happening. The PDP spokesman added that, the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) should also come out with statements affirming or otherwise what the judges have said because they made Nigerian to believe that each time Amaechi made his clandestine approach it was reported to the CJN who is the chairman of NJC. According to the party, this allegations could not be swept under the carpet not only because all what Amaechi was desiring to achieve was to upstage the PDP governors in Ekiti, Rivers and Akwa Ibom States but because of precedence and to redeem the image of the so called Anti-corruption fight of the All progressives Congress government at the center. "We are not on the side of any judge found wanting in the dispensation of his job but whoever is accused therein should also be brought to book because what is good for geese is also good for gander, in view of this the minister that has been alleged along the lines should also face trial like the judges. " The party warned that leaving Amaechi outside the probe would clearly vindicate those who made the allegation against him, saying that it will not only make mockery of the whole exercise but indicate that the judges were being punished for not dancing to the tune of the presidency which the transportation minister represents in this context. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has denied allegation by Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, that its acting Director, Legal Services, Mrs Toyin Babalola demanded $1million bribe from him. The commission, via a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, by Mr Adedeji Soyebi, INEC National Commissioner in charge of Publicity, said the allegation was far from the truth. Ibrahim’s name was submitted to INEC by the disputed National Chairman of the PDP, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction as the party’s candidate for the Ondo State Nov.26 governorship election. The PDP National Caretaker Committee, led by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, also submitted Mr Eyitayo Jegede to INEC as PDP candidate for the same election. INEC also quoted Ibrahim of accusing the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo State, Mr Segun Agbaje of some “dirty deals.” Soyebi said that preliminary investigation carried out, showed that the allegation was far from the truth. “On the first allegation, our investigation revealed that Mr Ibrahim turned up at the INEC headquarters, Abuja unannounced. “Ibrahim made his way to Mrs Babalola’s office brandished a copy of the court document. “He insisted that INEC should accept him as the official candidate of the PDP for the Ondo State governorship poll.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/inec-denies-1m-bribery-allegation-jimoh-ibrahim/ |
•Why APC’s NWC upturned Appeal Committee’s report and upheld Governorship Primary Committee report In Odigie-Oyegun’s domicile IT was on a cool evening that I met with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, at his Abuja residence, last weekend. It was certainly not my first meeting with him, as I knew Odigie-Oyegun since 1991 when he emerged as the first civilian governor of Edo state. Though, his tenure was short-lived, as a military junta, led by former Head of State; the late General Sani Abacha sacked the then civilian government, vulgarly aborting the Third Republic. We were to meet again during the days of South-South Peoples Assembly, SSPC, which he was the national chairman, but had cause to quit the exalted position on principle. I questioned him then, he replied that he would not be party to a South-South group where some people would want to box everybody into a particular party. (He meant PDP) without which you would not be regarded. He was one of the few South-South leaders, who felt that former President Goodluck Jonathan and his party, PDP were not performing and he had no reason to support the party. One of his associates recalled to this reporter that after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, presumably won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola, some top brass of the military wanted to get the defunct SDP to cooperate with the Abacha government and had permeated the party. The national leadership of the party convened a meeting in Benin City, the capital of his state, to discuss the way forward. “While some of the leaders were favorably disposed to abandoning the Abiola mandate, Odigie-Oyegun delivered a powerful message, reminding the party leaders of a Benin adage, which says: “It is better to show a child where his father died defending his honour than that path he took fleeing into the bush. ‘It was his potent submission and that of a few others that led to the formation of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO. Besides being governors on the platform of the defunct SDP, his membership of NADECO with the National Leader of APC, Alhaji Bola Tinubu, many took them as birds of the same plumage until the outburst, last month, by the latter, calling for his resignation, accusing him of treachery in the Governorship Primary of APC in Ondo state,” he said. This reporter had called Odigie-Oyegun on phone penultimate week from his base in Delta state on the raging feud between him and Tinubu, but said he would not want to speak on the issue until he met with President Muhammadu Buhari. By the time I got to Abuja, last week, for separate engagements with some Niger Delta leaders in Abuja, he had already met with President Buhari and issued a statement that read something like: “Tinubu cannot sack me on the pages of newspapers,” which was the headline in some newspapers. In his article in the Guardian newspapers of October 14, 2016, the former Special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati painted a surreal picture of incredible things that go on beyond the glitz and glamour of the official residence and office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, popularly called the Aso Rock. In that article titled ‘The Spiritual Side of Aso Rock’, Dr Abati who served as President Jonathan’s spokesman for four years recounted strange and some times, tragic occurrences that befell people who work or live in the precincts of the presidential Villa. Recounting personal experiences and those that happened to colleagues while he served in the highest office in the land, Dr Abati gave a depressingly worrisome scenario of the higher spiritual powers that tended to influence or dictate the happenings in the Villa which by extension had dire consequences for the country. He wrote in part: “I can confirm that every principal officer suffered one tragedy or the other; it was as if you needed to sacrifice something to remain on duty inside that environment. From cancer to brain and prostrate surgery and whatever, the villa was a hospital full of agonising patients … “A colleague once told me that I was the most naïve person around the place. I thought I was a bright, smart, professional doing my bit and enjoying the President’s confidence. I spelled it out. But what I got in response was that I was coming to the villa using Lux soap, but that most people around the place always bathed in the morning with blood. Goat blood. Ram blood. Whatever animal blood. I argued. “He said there were persons in the Villa walking upside down, head to the ground. I screamed. Everybody looked normal to me. But I soon began to suspect that I was in a strange environment indeed. Every position change was an opportunity for warfare. “By the same token, all those our colleagues who used to come to work to complain about a certain death beneath their waists and who relied on videos and other instruments to entertain wives (take it easy boys, I don’t mean any harm, I am writing!), have all experienced a re-awakening… “When Presidents make mistakes, they are probably victims of a force higher than what we can imagine. Every student of Aso Villa politics would readily admit that when people get in there, they actually become something else. They act like they are under a spell. When you issue a well- crafted statement, the public accepts it wrongly.” I have copiously quoted from Abati’s column that is now generating controversy. As a correspondent of the Vanguard newspaper who covered presidents Olusgeun Obasanjo , Umaru Yaradua and Goodluck Jonathan, I can relate well with some of the stranger than fiction scenario painted by Dr Abati. But beyond the strange incidence, the foundation of the construction of the villa itself was laid in strange circumstances. According to a staff of Julius Berger, the construction company that built the Villa, from the very day that the excavation for what is now known as the presidential Villa was made; it was mired in strange incidences. The staff who has worked for the construction company for over thirty years and claimed he was there when the very first excavation began narrated the strange occurrences that marked the first few months. The Enugu State Police Command on Friday said it arrested members of a notorious syndicate that specialised in job placement racketeering in Enugu. The command’s Spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu said that the syndicate members were rounded up through intelligence information. Amaraizu said that the syndicate, which operated under the name “Step Golden Concept’, had been a thorn on the flesh of members of the public in Enugu and its environs. He said that they were arrested on Wednesday at their hideout at 46 Chime Road, New Haven, Enugu. “It was gathered that the suspects who usually act as job providers, use the platform to extort various sums of money from unsuspecting job seekers. “They do this with a promise that job is real which will be false later, without the victim getting his money back or getting the job. “The suspects usually contact their victims via random SMS sent to their phones calling for job interviews and how to make payment. “Based on intelligence information, their hideouts were raided by the state command operatives where no fewer than 30 victims who were earlier extorted appeared for suspected pseudo interviews. “Suspects are now helping the operatives in their investigation in relation to the nefarious activities,’’ Amaraizu said. The spokesman advised members of the public to be security conscious and avoid anything that would expose them to activities of fraudsters. “The command has put adequate machinery in place to fish out those in this illicit act and bring them to book,’’ he said.
