The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission yesterday insisted that there is no immediate tariff increase till it holds public consultation for electricity consumers under the 11 power Distribution Companies (DisCos). In a statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs Department, Dr. Usman Abba Arabi, the Commission said: “The minor review Order released by the Commission on January 3, 2020 has no immediate impact on end-user tariffs payable by all classes of electricity customers in the country.” NERC said the Order has further prescribed minimum market remittance threshold payable by the 11 DisCos and the ‘projected tariff path until 2021’. “However, where actual end-user tariffs are likely to be impacted by the review, the required public and stakeholder consultations shall be implemented,” it said. Although NERC failed to say when the rise will begin contrary to the DisCos’ orders, its Chairman, Prof. James Momoh signed stipulating an expected increase from April 2020. Standing on the signed tariff orders, the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) on Monday said the increase will start April. Spokesman of ANED, Chief Sunday Oduntan in a statement said, “the tariffs shall remain the same as they presently are (i.e. 2015 levels) until April 01, 2020 when there will be a slight increment to cater for tariff shortfalls which shall be gradually passed on to the consumer until this is fully completed by the end of 2021.’’ Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/nerc-insists-no-immediate-electricity-tariff-increase.html |

The government of Ebonyi State has reaffirmed that the state governor, Engr. David Umahi, is still a strong member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This came following some insinuations in some quarters that Engr. Umahi is a member of the two parties. A Barr. Uchenna Orji, who double as the commissioner for Information and State Orientation/Human Capital Development and Monitoring, made this clarification on Monday in Abakiliki. The Commissioner, who also described the action of the actors as mischievous and childish, added that it was a misrepresentation of the state governor’s view. He insisted that the actors were desperate to cause disaffection. His words: “In their desperate attempt to cause disaffection against the State Government, they mischievously misrepresented the Governor as saying: ‘I am the only Governor that belongs to PDP and APC.’ “This blackmail is nothing but a cheap and childish fabrication that is irritably displeasing to the sensibilities of the ordinary man. It is a common sense that no one party member in Nigeria can belong to another political party at a time. “The Governor never said that he belongs to APC. He is unshakably a PDP Chieftain and has been great party man, whose track records as historic State Party Chairman and currently PDP Governor and leader in Ebonyi State are known and admired by people of good will”, he said. It was alleged that Umahi made this public at his country home in Uburu, Ohanzara local government area of the state where he received some stakeholders from Ishielu, Onicha LGAs and members of Cross River-Ebonyi Youths Peace Ambassadors during the past Christmas holiday. President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned murder of 19 people by gunmen in Tawari community of Kogi Local Government Area, Kogi State. President Buhari, in a statement issued yesterday by his media aide Garba Shehu, said “there is no excuse or justification for killing innocent people by anybody or group, and for whatever motive. “The killings and revenge killings will only aggravate the cycle of violence, creating neither safety nor security for any side. “People should avoid taking the law into their own hands because doing so could make a bad situation worse and undermine the government’s efforts to tackle security challenges. “I am gravely worried about frequency and temptation of using violence to settle disputes instead of following lawful and amicable means to avoid needless destruction of lives and property,” the president added. The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has queried the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) over a ₦5.1 billion contract. The contract was awarded for the renovations of its corporate headquarters in Lagos. Chairman of the committee, Rep. Woke Oke, queried the NPA management led by its Managing Director, Mrs Hadiza Bala-Usman, at an investigative hearing on Thursday. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Auditor-General of the Federation had raised a query on the contract awarded in 2011. The contract had a completion period of 15 months, but without a valid signed contractual agreement with the contracting firm. It was awarded for the renovations of the NPA Headquarters in Lagos and relocation of some of the offices from the headquarters to other locations. The Reps query alleged that there was no valid signed contractual agreement in place as at 2013, when the contract ought to have been completed and money paid out. Bala-Usman, however, said that the contract was awarded by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) with records that showed a valid signed contractual agreement. The committee chairman, however, expressed concern over the contractual agreement and insisted that the NPA make available the original copies of the signed agreement. He said the photocopies of the documents were not clear enough to be read. Oke explained that the original copies of the agreement were the only way to clear the organisation of the audit query. The Igbo Youth Assembly (IYA) worldwide has asked leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to apologise to President Muhammadu Buhari for consistently abusing his personality and administration. The assembly also urged all Nigerians to key in and support “the laudable initiatives” of the present administration on home grown economy, food security among others. In a statement signed by the President General, Ifeanyi Nwaudunna and Secretary General, Casmir Irekamba and made available to newsmen by the acting Publicity Secretary, Prince Asobi Onyemike, on the occasion of President Buhari’s 77th birthday, the group said Kanu must apologise to the President for peace to reign. “Such acts of rudeness and irresponsibleness of Nnamdi Kanu should not be passed to the younger generation because it contradicts the customs, traditions and cultural values of Igbo as a People. “As such, with immediate effect, IYA Worldwide mandates Nnamdi Kanu to appologise to President Muhammadu Buhari and have his peace at Afara-Ukwu Umuhia Abia State. “IYA Worldwide maintains that President Buhari’s administration has recorded so much transformation in the areas of infrastructure and road construction such as, Enugu – Port Harcourt Express Way, Lagos – Ibadan Express way, Air ports re-construction across the country, the Second Niger Bridge and the laudable fight against corruption and insurgency in the country,” the group said. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed President Muhammadu Buhari’s birthday declaration to bequeath a legacy of free and fair elections as diversionary posturing, which cannot sway Nigerians to place any trust in the present administration. The PDP said in a statement Tuesday that President Buhari cannot claim to be committed to free and fair election after he refused to sign the amendment to the Electoral Act. The party said Buhari cannot rightly assert a commitment to electoral reform when he congratulated all “beneficiaries of past flawed elections” while his administration allegedly failed to take any decisive step to bring riggers and perpetrators of violence in the elections to book. “Our party notes that penance is a process from which a President is not forbidden. However, we invite Mr. President to note that the true electoral reform, which our nation requires today, goes beyond mere verbal posturing. He needs to openly support the strengthening of our electoral laws and the decisive application of the provisions thereof. “The PDP therefore, tasks President Buhari to demonstrate that commitment for free, fair and credible electoral process by immediately returning the Electoral Act amendment bill to the National Assembly for accelerated consideration with a commitment from him to sign it into law upon passage,” the party said. A passenger, who was caught smoking on board Air Peace international flight P4 7558 from Sharjah – Lagos, has been sentenced to a two-week imprisonment with the option of paying N200,000 as a fine by an Ogba Magistrate Court. The passenger was seen smoking a cigarette onboard the flight on December 11, 2019 and was accosted by the airline’s flight attendant, Adewale Oyebade. The act contravenes the global civil aviation regulations. Cabin crew usually announce to passengers that it is a non-smoking flight as part of the take-off formalities. A Corporate Communications Executive of Air Peace, Stanley Olisa, said that the passenger violated the standing global aviation regulation of non-smoking in-flight. He stated that the efforts of Oyebade must be commended as his safety consciousness made him expose the passenger who was secretly carrying out the act. He added that the flight attendant noticed the passenger’s prohibited act while doing his routine safety checks. In response, the airline reiterated its commitment to global safety standards, saying: “We are fully committed to the safety of our passengers and will not compromise that stance for anything.” Olisa, who lauded the court for the speedy judgment, thanked the airline’s passengers for their continued patronage and promised safer and more comfortable flights.
