An ex-member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abraham Amuta, yesterday allegedly turned down an offer by the Boko Haram insurgents to be freed and go home. Instead, the ex-corps member reportedly told those who went to the Sambisa forest to secure his release to go back home, saying he had renounced his Christian faith. Amuta, a native of Benue State, who was doing his one-year mandatory service in Borno State, was abducted alongside a 58-year-old man, Moses Oyeleke of Living Faith Church in Maiduguri and few others, including a schoolgirl, Ndagiliya Ibrahim Umar, on April 10, 2019. They were abducted along Gwoza road from Maiduguri on their way to Chibok to deliver humanitarian assistance. Seven months after his abduction by the Boko Haram fighters loyal to Abubakar Shekau, Pastor Oyeleke was released in November 2019. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ex-corps-member-turns-down-offer-to-be-freed-by-b-haram.html

For driving against traffic, a mechanic detained by the police in Rivers State died in custody in December, 2019 while his corpse was yet to be released to the family. Wife of the deceased Port Harcourt-base mechanic, Chima Ikwunado, Mrs Adugo Ikwunado has called on the Rivers State Police Command to produce the corpse of her late husband allegedly in police custody. Chima was allegedly tortured to death by Eagle Crack team, the anti-crime police squad attached to the Mile One Police station, Port Harcourt. Ikwunado was arrested alongside four of his apprentices in December 2019 by the E-crack commanded by a Superintendent of Police, Benson Adetuyi for driving against traffic. The suspect was taken to Mile One Police Station where he was allegedly tortured to death. A relation of the deceased simply identified as John told Daily Trust Saturday that the E-Crack team tortured Chima while four other of his apprentices of his sustained various degrees of injuries during interrogation. Since his death the remains of the decease has been in police custody. The circumstances surrounding the death have been a subject of controversy. While the family insists he was tortured to death, Rivers State Police Command through its Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni said that the deceased died as a result of high sugar level. At a world press conference organised by the coalition of civil society, the deceased’s wife faulted the allegation by the police that her late husband died of high level of sugar, saying that before they got married last year she and the late husband carried out HIV, sugar level and some other tests to ascertain their health statues. On whether the late husband was a cult member as alleged by the Police, pregnant Adugo responded in the contrary. “I knew my husband two months before we married. He was not a bad person. He did not have bad friends. He has never stayed out late since we got married.” President of the Rivers Civil Society Organization in Rivers State, Comrade Enefaa Georgewill at the world press conference called on the National Assembly not to allow the death of late Chima be swept under the carpet without proper investigation as there are too many torture chambers in the state. He called on the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike to wade into the matter and direct the Attorney General of the state to facilitate the release of four other persons in custody to enable them access medical care. “The governor should also direct the Attorney General to call for an inquest into the circumstances that led to the death of Chima Ikwunado,” Georgewill said. The group expressed fear that if nothing was done urgently to release the remaining four mechanics still in detention, they may die because of various degrees of injuries they sustained from the torture. In the same vein, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Rivers state has called on the relevant authorities to ensure that justice was served for the gruesome murder of late Chima and ensure that the four boys in police cell were released without further delay. Spokesman of Ohanaeze in the state, Maxi Felix Onwuma said at its meeting, pleaded with the deceased colleagues at Ikokwu market to refrain from further protests on the matter. “We want justice to be done for the late Chima and the four boys in prison custody. If in the coming week these four boys are not released, then we will call for a sit-at-home protest,” he said. The protests almost turning violent but for the timely intervention of the Mile One police. One of the agitated protesters, Emeka Osuji, said the essence of the protest was to demand justice for their colleague and the release of their four other colleagues held in police detention since December 20, 2019. “We are not happy. Our stance is for the police to release Chima’s corpse to the family or us, and release the four boys in their custody. This is not fair,” he said. Osuji also alleged the police were being economical with the truth about Chima’s death. He maintained that late Chima had no health challenge, let alone excessive sugar in the blood, as being told by the Police. Another mechanic, Kelechi Onyekwere, said they were not resting on their oars until justice prevails. “No matter what the police will do, we will continue to protest until those policemen, who tortured Chima to death, are brought to book and our other boys released,” Onyekwere declared. Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni said Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura, has ordered full-scale investigation into the activities of the E-Crack and the circumstances surrounding the death of Chima. Omoni said the investigation was ordered into the matter with a view to unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death and to bring about Justice. The Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, has raised alarm over the increasing security challenges in the country. Chukwuma expressed concern over the security situation in Nigeria on Friday, when the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu Planning Committee on the maiden edition of Annual Lecture Series and Thanksgiving, paid him a courtesy visit. He said that it was disturbing that kidnappers had begun to operate at the train stations, describing the development as “an indication that nowhere is safe in the country.” He, however, said that there was hope for Nigeria, “if all citizens live in peace and harmony.” He called for improved welfare and enumeration of all the journalists in Nigeria, while admonishing journalists to uphold professionalism and ethics of their profession. He decried the hate speech bill, saying that it is the right of the media to report everything happening around them. He also called on President Muhammad Buhari to check the wanton killing of innocent citizens across the country, epileptic power supply, poverty and hunger. In his remark, the Chairman of the NUJ planning committee, Mr Michael Ilediagu, commended the bishop for supporting the programme with a promise to provide a hall as venue for the event. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme, slated to hold on February 20, is aimed at closing the gap between the ruling class, media and the people. The headquarters of the All Progressives Congress in Maradun local government of Zamfara State has been demolished allegedly by an agency of the state government, the party chairman in the local government, Alhaji Sa’adu Bawa Gora, told Daily Trust. The state governor, Bello Mattawale, hails from Maradun Local Government Area of the state. The party chairman said long before the demolition, there had been speculation that the headquarters building would be brought down because it was marked by the Zamfara State Urban and Regional Planning Board (ZUREPB) as a structure illegally erected. “The building belonged to an APC stalwart called Alhaji Lawali Izala who was formerly a close ally of Governor Matawalle before he defected to APC and handed over the structure to the party to use as an office.” “The building had served as office for other parties including the ruling PDP before. But they decided to demolish it now when it has become our office. It was an injustice meted out to us. We did nothing wrong to warrant this treatment in the local government,” he added. State chairman of the APC Alhaji Lawali M. Liman who described the development as unfortunate, said they would report the matter to their national headquarters and consult their lawyers for the next line of action. However, chairman of ZUREPB Alhaji Samaila Umaru Sambo dismissed the allegations saying they did not demolish any party office but a structure that was illegally erected. “For quite a long time, there have been complaints even from the residents that the structure was illegally built and we served them with notice to come to our office to rectify the matter but he did not, so as far as we are concerned the structure is not a party office,” he said. The Nigeria Economic Summit Group yesterday projected that the Nigeria’s poverty rate could hit 35 percent if proactive policy measures were not taken by various tiers of government to address the increasingly worrisome unemployment rate in the economy. It also predicted that the nation’s unemployment rate could rise to 16 percent by 2030 based on other assessment parameters, including a $2,700 per capita with the average agriculture share of the GDP. The NESG also projected that the service sector share could hit 54 percent, These micro and macroeconomic projections were contained in the group’s 2020 macro-economic outlook published yesterday. It noted that Nigeria’s economy remained fragile despite the modest recovery it recorded over the past two years. The NESG stressed the urgent need for government to adopt appropriate policy measures to deal with the challenges of bourgeoning population and rural-urban drift of millions of Nigerians. It said Nigeria’s economy would record a 6.4 percent growth by 2030 if current challenges facing business were frontally tackled by the government.
