The Nigerian Security and Minting Plc spends N414m yearly to generate power for its two offices in Abuja and Lagos .

Out of the amount, N228m is spent on rented generators while the Power Holding Company of Nigeria collects the balance of N186m as electricity bills.

In Lagos, the company spends N11m monthly on generators while the PHCN receives N9m.

In Abuja, rented generators cost the company N8m monthly, while the PHCN collects N6m.

The revelations were made in Abuja on Monday as the House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Currency began investigations into the operations of the company.

In addition, six trucks of diesel are reportedly bought monthly to run the generators, which are rented from contractors.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Ehi Okoyomon, who gave the figures while answering questions from members of the committee, explained that in the case of Lagos, the rented generators came into use in August 2007.

In the case of Abuja office, Okoyomon said that the generators had been in use since March 2007.

On why the firm opted for rented generators instead of using its own existing four generators, Okoyomon said the generators packed up while the cost of repairing them locally was taking a toll on the finances of the firm.

“Our engineers failed us and though they tried to bring in foreign experts, the equipment kept disappearing one after the other,” he stated.

The committee members, led by the chairman, Mr. Ogbuefi Ozomachi, were however, surprised that the company was “wasting” so much funds on generators at a time it frequently complained of making low profits.

“We are amazed, Mr. MD, because N23m could have bought you brand new generators; why spend so much to rent generators?” Ozomachi asked.

Okoyomon explained that the company had already bought five new generators and would install them in the next six weeks, but he did not disclose the cost of the generators.

The committee also sought to know how much it costs the company to print a naira note locally compared to printing it abroad against the backdrop of reports that it is costing the nation huge funds to print the naira abroad.

Okoyomon chose to reply to the issue behind closed doors for security reasons. He requested to speak with the lawmakers in camera.

On the case of about 50 members of staff of the company who were allegedly sacked for cooperating with the House in the ongoing investigations, Okoyonmon described it as “false and ludicrous.”

He said, “Nobody was sacked. We have 1,100 employees, and only two were retired in the last couple of months.

“They were exited according to existing regulations; what happened was that one member of staff who felt that he had connections with the National Assembly was behind this falsehood.”
