Kano State Hisbah Board has discovered 15 women with HIV/AIDS among thousands of screened applicants for mass wedding in Kano. Besides, 23 women tested positive to pregnancy screening. Hisbah’s spokesperson, Alhaji Adamu Yahaya, who told newsmen on the outcome of the exercise, revealed that 8,000 women applied for the state sponsored mass wedding programme, including divorcees, widows and spinsters. He said the screening was part of the prerequisites to ascertain the health status of intending couples before the consummation to enable the board and each person know the health status of their partner. “The prospective couples were selected from the 44 local councils of the state and as soon as the screening is completed, the state government would fix the date for the conduct of the mass marriage”.He stressed that Governor Umar Ganduje has sustained the mass wedding initiative to check the rate of prostitution and assist those incapacitated to marry. The governor had constituted a 23-member committee headed by Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zaharadeen, in December 2018, to select 3,000 women for the mass wedding. Meanwhile, the heightened atmosphere of the general elections took the shine off last week’s celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day. Away from the boisterous ambience where the city of Lagos is serenaded in the colour of red, it was an unusual Valentine’s Day as most Lagosians went about their normal businesses while only few persons were seen donning an attire with a touch of red. The Guardian also observed that most eatery outlets and gift item shops recorded low patronage unlike in previous years where even secondary school pupils mark the day with fanfare. According to Ogunjide Olufunkanyi, manager of Chicken Republic, Victoria Island, she attributed the low turn out of customers to the preparations for the polls and lack of money in the system. On the contrary, Oaikhena Elimen, the branch manager of Medplus, a pharmaceutical store in Victoria Island, said there was a high patronage of condoms, which he said is as a result of Valentine, as many young ones would like to play safe when engaging in sex to mark the day. “Really, we have recorded more sales of condoms today. The students want to show appreciation, love and have fun. People abuse this day by luring girls into immoral sexual activities in the name of valentine but there was high customer request for packs of condoms,” he added. https://guardian.ng/news/15-hiv-carriers-23-pregnant-women-uncovered-in-kano-mass-wedding/amp/?F=&__twitter_impression=true |
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole has alleged that the Independent of National Electoral Commission, INEC, and its officials shared the news of planned postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, before taking the action. Oshiomhole spoke at the emergency caucus meeting of the APC held in Abuja Monday following the postponement of the elections. The former Edo State Governor said, “I can put my hands on the quran and swear that INEC and its officials informed the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, before postponing the election. The PDP were well acquainted with the plans to move to the elections. “This is why they did not receive the news with shock. They made us look like fools, because we were busy preparing for the elections while they were relaxing.” http://dailypost.ng/2019/02/18/inec-informed-pdp-postponing-polls-apc-chairman-oshiomhole/amp/?__twitter_impression=true Cc lalasticlala Mynd44

Twenty candidates of various political parties have withdrawn from the governorship election in Kaduna State. Abdullahi briefed reporters on Tuesday during a solidarity visit to the Government House in Kaduna, where the candidates endorsed the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai. According to him, the candidates took the decision to support Governor El-Rufai of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to enable him to complete to the good work he has started in the state. He said his colleagues were confident that El-Rufai can take Kaduna State to the next level of human and infrastructural development. Abdullahi revealed that they have resolved to mobilise their supporters and party members to vote massively for the governor and President Muhammadu Buhari at the polls. He also stated their commitment to working together with the APC leaders to ensure victory for the ruling party. The UDP candidate also informed reporters that 12 more candidates would adopt Governor El-Rufai as their sole governorship candidate before the governorship election scheduled for March 2. Former deputy spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari and his campaign Director-General, Rotimi Amaechi, to tell Nigerians why people are dying during their party’s rallies. He made the call while referring to the loss of lives at APC presidential rally in Rivers state. In a statement, he signed and forwarded to DAILY POST, titled: “Buhari, Amaechi: Explain why people are dying at APC rallies,” Frank alleged that the killings may be for “rituals by the APC leaders.” While paying condolences to the family of those who have lost their lives in APC rallies across the country, the former APC spokesperson urged Nigerians to be sensitive by avoiding gathering of APC leaders, receiving money or materials from “bloodsucking party. He said: “If not for rituals, the number of deaths recorded so far at APC rallies are enormous. How come no single death has been recorded in PDP rally that had more crowd? Our spiritual leaders must unravel what is killing people at APC rallies. “I call on Nigerians to stop collecting campaign materials like T-shirt, face cap, Tradermoni and so on from APC leaders. This is a party that has brought pain and anguish to Nigeria. Since APC took over in 2015, blood has been flowing as if it is normal. Hundreds have been lost to farmer/herders crisis in Benue, Plateau and Taraba states, bandits killed more in Kaduna and Zamfara, Boko Haram and other killers gained more ground and now Nigerians are still dying at common campaign rallies of APC. “These and many more have shown that the hands of APC leaders are not clean. We must reject them through our votes, we must stand by and protect our votes. Frank also accused the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Yakubu Mahmud of having prior knowledge of burnt materials and offices in some strongholds of the PDP across the country to reduce its votes. Frank insisted that the INEC boss cannot be exonerated from the plot to reduce votes at areas identified as PDP strongholds. “The burning at INEC offices is part of the strategies agreed upon at a midnight meeting Prof. Yakubu held with the president at Defence house recently. Strange things already happening but it is clear that the whole world is watching. “I will warn the INEC leadership to desist from carrying out evil agenda and template prepared to rig the forthcoming election because if anything contrary happens against the will of the people, the INEC boss will be held responsible,” Frank stated. The Bayelsa born activist also condemned a media report credited to the INEC boss where he warned foreign observers to only “observe and not monitor. “I’m using this medium to call on international community to hold the INEC boss responsible if anything happens against the will of the people,” he said. http://dailypost.ng/2019/02/13/buhari-amaechi-using-people-rituals-campaign-timi-frank-alleges/amp/?__twitter_impression=true Cc lalasticlala Mynd44

The Court of Appeal in Sokoto has dismissed an appeal against the judgment of a Zamfara State High Court asking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for various offices in Zamfara State. The judgment effectively paves the way for the APC to participate in all elections in the state starting on Saturday with the presidential and National Assembly polls. A three-member panel of judges unanimously dismissed the appeal following its withdrawal by the appellant, Aminu Jaji. INEC has early insisted it would not recognise the Zamfara candidates who were produced after the stipulated time for the primaries. The electoral body also maintained its position following conflicting judgments on the matter by a high court of Zamfara and federal high court on the same day. The campaign council of President Muhammadu Buhari has said the comment made by Mr Buhari in Zamfara State was a “joke”. The opposition had condemned the president’s comments as an incitement. Mr Buhari, while concluding his remarks in Hausa at a campaign rally in Gusau, Zamfara State on Sunday, said he was happy that the nation had two rainy seasons that enabled farmers to make good yield. He then prayed for another fruitful rainy season. “What I actually want is for everyone to feed well and as for those who want to continue with their “fitna”, (they) can go ahead”. The word “fitna” in Hausa literally mean “crisis” and because Zamfara state is experiencing insecurity as a result of the activities of bandits who daily kill and kidnap citizens of the state, many interpret his comments as a call to continued violence. The candidate of the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Monday, said the comments by Mr Buhari was “unpresidential”. In a statement on Tuesday, the spokesperson of the Buhari campaign organisation, Festus Keyamo, said typical of the Atiku campaign, “they have continued in their favourite pastime of peddling falsehood, scaremongering and misinformation”. Mr Keyamo said the comment by Mr Abubakar accusing the president of promoting violence was false. “The Hausa word the President used in Zamfara, which has been taken out of context, is “fitna”. “Incidentally all our Hausa language scholars have said the word means different things: it means distress, trial, affliction or temptation. It can also be used to describe rebellion or uprising. “In this case, President Buhari was actually weighing in on the joke told very often of recent in the North that due to the rice boom, farmers have embarked on pilgrimage and the marrying of more wives. “So, what the President meant was actually a joke deliberately taken out of context: he simply told the crowd to ensure they eat very well because of the rice boom before they can contemplate giving in to those temptations,” Mr Keyamo said. The campaign spokesperson said even in some private meetings with the campaign team, Mr Buhari has always commented on this joke. “Sadly, out of desperation, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has decided to peddle falsehood. “We urge Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to realize that it is God Almighty that gives power and takes power. He should not use his palpable desperation to return to power (in order to sell Nigeria to his “friends” and to make them rich) to set this nation ablaze by outright falsehood,” Mr Keyamo said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/312092-buharis-violence-comment-a-joke-campaign-council.html
