Ikenna351:

Is like you want to join the mechanic in performing Circus show in your engine bay, because it appears two of you have mistaken temperature switch with thermostat. Thermostat has no wiring connector or socket. It pure mechanical.

Ikenna

Yes its pure metal parts and its there... My mistake was with the temperature switch. I travelled out of Abuja but once am back I will sort out the switch and thermostat issue so I can have a normal running temp for once...

Car Talk / Re: Mercedes Benz Thread by aikerism(m): 9:15pm On Nov 22, 2013
I have checked it out. I do have a thermostat afterall but it most likely has failed, it is a whaler brand... The mechanic disconnected the socket and the temp gauge pin droped to the minimum, he then used a wire to connect the socket to one other place and the guage pin shot up to the maximum... Hmmmm!
I will have it replaced but I couldn't do it today and am leaving town for a few days, so I will tackle the thermostat issue on my return!
Am grateful to you all my brothers from another BENZ cheesy
Thanks to you Ikenna (my namesake)

I think the thermostat has been compromised... two things... , there are two brands OEM for that ride- WAHLER & BEHR,

as you know, thermostats are designed to fail in the open state.. i.e allowing water to flow thru all the time, no restriction, - such can lead to what u have.

secondly the thermostat must have been removed , by the person that sold you the car, whether dealer or whoever here in Naija, such can also lead to your scenario..

the first instance of failure is prone to the WAHLER brand of thermostat , and its the common one around....

I would advice you ask your mechanic to check if the thermostat is there, or failed..... in any case, do look for BEHR brand and put in there. its usually rated 87 or 91 degrees centigrade..

best of luck...

I have not checked the thermostat before... I will have it checked in the next hour and update the house... And pls this BEHR brand how much is it sold? Cos am heading to Apo Mechanic Village now now embarassed

hello bros, I am worried about your running temperature, or was this pic taken when the engine was cool?

mine usually took + or - 5mins to get to the half mark (i.e 87- 91 degrees centigrade)

even @ that temperature the RPM should be higher than that, that's how its designed...

That 1st pic showing 32 was taken at 4pm when I have done a lot moving around while the second pic showing 23 was taken in the morning traffic 7:55am on my way to work... undecided

Looking at the first pics on your post, i can say that your car idling is relatively low. I stand to be corrected though

Yes its low... But I though that's supposed to be a good thing. As long as d vehicle doesn't go off and all that.
I clean my throttle body frequently so that I don't get rough idling...
Also dat pic was taken with the A.C on, if I turn it off it will move up just a lil bit. cool

Uncle Kuntash, truth is I have had this car for 11 months now and it has NEVER gotten to 40 something degrees before its always between 18 and 30 something... Don't know if its a fault or its normal.
I do know dat it came with a very small radiator which was replaced with a bigger one. I have never had any over heating issues as I use the A.C 98% of the time.
I changed my water pump in august this year cos I noticed the collant level was droping constantly.
I use ordinarily distilled water in it and all seems well. I have done north to east travels and back more than 5 times since I got her and all seems pretty okay.
What do you think?

For now I always refill my tank whenever it gets to half... But I am going to travel to the eastern part of the country soon so I will see how much I can cover with a full tank (in km).
This pics show + or - how my consumption has been since I started caring to notice...

Hydraulic Fluid is any Good DOT-4 (must be DOT4, else u are on ur own)

For plugs, see below...

GPSERIES PLUG BKR5EGP NGK7090
IXIRIDIUM PLUG BKR5EIX NGK6341
STANDARD PLUG BKR5ES NGK2460
VPOWER PLUG BKR5E NGK7938

For Lubricant- Engine oil, patronize 5w-40 , 10w-40 synthetic engine oils, ..... you can contact me if you need any of these..... even in Benin city

The yellow Coolant from Havoline is the recommended one, and I have checked all d while I used mine and was unable to find.... best bet for you is to use a condensed water from the home airconditioners ... ( i.e the water that comes from the AC) its better than most coolants.

Lest I 4get.... NEVER, NEVER. I MEAN NNNNNEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEERRRRR... allow any incompetent electrician to mess up that car by attempting to bypass any connection..

Uncle kuntash u wia responding to another member with the above... And

"What engine oil to use. I know Mobil 1 but I have not seen any mineral oil of 0w-40, 5w-40 or even 10w-40. I know I should ordinarily use Mobil 1 0w-40 but because of the high mileage of the car 210,000, some are speculating that the oil will be too thin for the engine due to the wear and tear it must have accumulated over time and as a result, leakages will occur. Is there any truth to this or can I just go ahead and use Mobil 1 0w-40. If I cant use Mobil 1, whats the next best available oil for me to use."

Oga Zic you quoted someone who had some questions... One thing I want to ask is is 0w-40 okay for engines that have done over 200k odometer reading? Cos I have just been seeing 5w, 10wn and 15w-40 in the last 2 pages...

ziccoit: As I promised the house sometimes ago concerning 1997 Mercedes Benz C230/C180 Classic controversy vis-a-vis VIN report and engine picture.
The car has arrived. Very neat inside out except for some little isolated area around the handles by the driver's side showing signs of rust! I wasn't told of this. The agent thought it is nothing!

Honestly, W202 is a beauty, classy and inviting. Very comfortable a ride.

Kindly formally welcome me to W202 club. Lol
Here is the engine pix

Congratulations my bro... I am welcoming you officially. So please furnish the house with more pics... Interior + exterior + etc.
Twice again... Congratulations! cool

ziccoit: Looking through the engine pix now. I discovered I was unable to locate MAF sensor where it should be. Is this model devoid of maf sensor?

That looks just like my engine (C200) and yes those earlier models don't always come with the maf sensor...
But then again looking @ the gear box pic this is definitely a c180 pic. Also that the auto windows are for the front windows only (typical of most early 180's).
Finally the pic for the front nd rear are one and the same car but that engine bay gives the mixup away. Check d sticker on the persenger side of the front view is missing through the raised bonnett... Also not a 406 like vehicle on d left side of the engine pic but in the other two d̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥ r different vehicles around. So dat vin is not for the car shown. Gbam!!!

ziccoit:

How is your C200 fuel economy?

I fill her up with roughly N6,500. I reset to 000.0 and most times at half tank I half tank I would have two ninety somthing Km and a lil higher if I use cruise control. It generally depends on my driving...
If I fire like mad I will achieve a lower economy... One other factor that affects our fuel consumption here is traffic. We see hell in the mornings trynna go to work and even worse in the evening to get home. Most times your fuel won't last as long as it should.
But for highway I may not be able to calculate all that miles per galon ishh but in August I did Umuahia to Karu in Abuja with 3/4 of my tank (with the AC on all through) I think that is fair enough... Uncle Hannsen, Smartchoice, Gee @ house what do you all think?

viazi: @all, I am planning of getting a 1999 C280 sport. I love this car and its gonna be my 1st Benz. How ever, I reside in Abuja and am a lawyer, I do a lot of driving around the town in hot sun and thus I need a very good AC for the hot weather. Can this Benz AC withstand Abuja heat. I need sincere and honest advice.

THEN ASK ME...
I live in Abuja... am an Architect.... go to site here and there, yes the sun is merciless and will get hotter, but the Mercedes ac holds its own. when my car has been in sunlight all afternoon i just get in, wind down zoom off put on my ac and it gives me a lil warm air for like 6 seconds before it releases the south pole grin. then i just wind up and enjoy the sunny ride.

i have heard someone say something about big radiator and a good water pump and all that... i guess thats equally important so you wont have overheating issues. let our Gurus throw more light on this please. and yes Uncle Viazi i drive a 1996 C200 wink

smartchoice: have you ever checked gudu markt?

Uncle Smartchoice,
I have not checked there for MB parts before... Have you? I just felt I would have a wider market to choose from @ Apo...

I wanted to change my W202 fuel filter and this was brought after the mech placed a call... I took a pic of it but when he came out from under the car he rejected this and said they should bring one that has a certain number on it. When that one was brought it was looking exactly like this one buh he claimed there is a difference. undecided

Both sell for N2,000 anyways...
These purchases where made from Apo Mechanic Village, Abuja.

Good for your ride!

BTW, kindly let us in on the cost of the various parts you purchased. This will go a long way in changing the wrongful impression that "all MB are expensive to maintain compare to japies" school of thoughts.

Thanks.

Thanks Man,
Truth is if you have a Mechanic you trust he can assist in geting parts cos if you walk into a shop and just ask for something, no matter how cheap its supposed to be (be it Bosch or any other brand) they will always want to make money off you.
I lost a traficator and asked for the price and the last bargain I got for a traficator (not Bosch) was N2,500 for the "white" one, so I decided to buy it when I was ready to replace those bulbs I was missing...
On the "grin" day the Electrician suggested I bought 2 so that they will look the same as one. Would b new and the other old. I told him I didnt have N5,000 to spend for the 2, he just laughed and placed a call and this trafficator (a pair) was brought and he paid the person ... Wait for it... N900 each. shocked

If you are patronising the after market (toks) same thing applies get someone who can help you make the purchases without leaving a hole in your pocket...

pafestula: Hello house, please I need your candid opinion and advice from experience or lasting solutions to A160 class 1999 model, honestly what I read today on carsurvey.org and peoples reviews on the car really baffled me, the cons are more than the pros... and am expecting the same model this week from Cotonou because I already bought it, I love the car so much, at least to be relieving my W202 which have done done 258,000 mileage with without any problem. Abeg help your brother out before money enter bush.

Before money enter bush? Hmmmmmm no mater what you hear now... U cant change much cos you have already place the order and paid, u should have done the checking before making up your mind and not after... I might not know much about the car but I know if u maintain it then it will serve you. I was introduced to a family back in 2005 and they had this car and I saw their Father last in April and he was still driving the A class and it still looked good good to me. Dat is 8 years on. I know he has another car but no mater the cons you saw online or anywhere else a Mercedes will not fall apart just like dat wink

Enjoy your ride and keep the house posted.

Kaa!

Hmmmmm cnt seem to find any oda faulty bulb for now... lipsrsealed

I changed the front passenger side shock(cos I have been driving with a knocking sound since 23 August when I visited Abia State, fuel filter, put MB stock plugs, and since I noticed shortage in the water level every other day I investigated n saw a faulty. Water pump which was changed as well... cool
