What you said about him not being super impressive but just doing his job properly is what made him so good. He also in my opinion made Xavi and Iniesta better knowing he would be there to cover gave them more freedom to attack in possession and also allowed them to stay in more dangerous positions out of possession. He's often overlooked because everyone just talked about how good Xavi and iniesta were which they were great but he really helped get the best out of them,People always say it was easy for him as he had Xavi and Iniesta beside him but imo it was easy for them because he was beside them. It's hard to really praise defensive midfielders as the work they do is forgettable as there's so much of it.
