How Single Mother, 4 Other Drug Suspects Swallowed 398 Wraps of Narcotics.


[b]A 28 year old single mother and four other suspected drug traffickers have been apprehended over alleged ingestion of 398 wraps of narcotics. The drugs weighing 7.1kg consist of 1.1kg of methamphetamine and 6kg of cocaine. The suspects were caught by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja.

NDLEA Commander at the Abuja Airport, Mr Hamisu Lawan gave the names of the suspects as Udoka Peace Egbuchelam, 28 year old single mother who ingested 73 wraps of methamphetamine weighing 1.1kg; Ezechi Chinedu Nwabueze, 45 years old who ingested 95 wraps of cocaine weighing 2kg and Uzoukwu Uzomba Joel, 54 years old who ingested 85 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.5kg. Others are Obiora Boniface Okechukwu 36 years old who ingested 91 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.6kg and Eze Onyebuchi Everest 32 years old who swallowed 54 wraps of cocaine weighing 900 grammes.

According to Hamisu, apart from Udoka Peace Egbuchelam and Ezechi Chinedu Nwabueze who were to board Ethiopian Airline flights to Malaysia and Istanbul other suspects were caught during inward screening of passengers.

The only female among the five suspects said that she wanted enough money to pay for tuition fees of her 5 year old daughter. In her words, “I wanted to pay the school fees of my daughter. Since my arrest, I have been worried because I do not know how she is coping without me. The people that gave me the drug promised to pay me the sum of 2,700 dollars” Udoka stated. Udoka Peace Egbuchelam hails from Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State. She attended Nza Central School Uzobulu and Girls Secondary School Uzobulu.

Ezechi Chinedu Nwabueze a trader that sells shirts in Benin Republic ingested 95 wraps of cocaine weighing 2kg. He hails from Uzowani Local Government Area of Enugu State. “I am the only child of my parents. My problem began when my shop got burnt and nobody was willing to help me. I was to deliver the drugs in Istanbul, Turkey” he stated.

Another suspect, Uzoukwu Uzomba Joel left Brazil with 85 wraps of cocaine weighing
1.5kg in his stomach. His reason for smuggling cocaine according to him is frustration and sickness. He left Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Doha, Cairo and Abuja. Other suspects that attempted smuggling drugs from Brazil are Obiora Boniface Okechukwu and Eze Onyebuchi Everest.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade said that the single mother would have been killed if she was caught outside the country because of the capital punishment for drugs in Malaysia. He urged members of the public to avoid drug trafficking. “We are happy to prevent the untimely death of another Nigerian over drug trafficking” Giade stated.

[b]Charles Novia’s yet-to-be-released book, Nollywood till November, has been described as the ‘Book of secrets’. There could not be a more apt description for it. In the first excerpt we published on DailyPost, the producer talked about Omotola’s diva attitude on one of his sets and how he dealt with it.

In this excerpt however, it is about two mega Nollywood faces, Genevieve Nnaji and Stella Damasus. Novia reveals what he tagged as ‘professional rivalry’ between the actresses and what Genevieve was caught doing on set.



Excerpts:
The Producer in me wanted to titillate the audience with a box office pairing never before seen in Nollywood. I had for a few months wondered how it would be like to have Genevieve and Stella Damasus in leading roles in the same movie. They both were audience favourites for various reasons and the prospects of having another box office hit with both of them was quite appealing. Besides, the script ‘MORE THAN SISTERS’, was just right for both of them to explore their creative abilities.

Stella promptly signed up for the movie as did Segun Arinze, whose re-branding process was an on-going project for me. He was cast as a mellow ‘bad-guy-turned-good-guy’ who paid the ultimate price just to pay back a favour. We went on location after a couple of rehearsals. The chemistry and energy between Genevieve and Stella was amazing. Both actresses gave amazing performances. They were literally smoking! Somehow though, I could sense an unspoken professional rivalry between both of them. A certain competition to outshine each other, behind the friendship they had.

When I noticed a bit of that, I had to consciously rein in artistic excesses where I felt their acting could become melodramatic so as not to lose the essence of the story. But incidents like this were few. Though both actresses were friendly with each other, at that point in time, Genevieve was the bigger box office star. I expected some diva tantrums for her and was quite prepared to either curb such or handle it with the firmness I had devised for such but surprisingly, she was very co-operative and blended with cast and crew alike.

Our mutual professional respect for each other developed the more. I remember on the third day of recording, one night while shooting at a clinic in Victoria Garden City Extension, I came out for a bit of fresh air while the technical people were setting up for the next scene. I saw Genevieve in a dark corner of the building, smoking a cigarette. ‘Whoops! You caught me’, she said, laughing. ‘You smoke?’ I asked, a bit surprised. ‘Now and then. It relaxes me ’ she said. ‘Do you smoke?’ ‘Never have. Never will. But I don’t have any problems with people who smoke though. But health wise, I hope you stop soon.’ I replied. ‘I am trying to. Sit with me a bit, lets talk about this scene ’ I sat with her and I explained some few things to her about the scene. We also talked about a bit of her stardom and how she was coping with it. She was in a chatty mood and it was a revealing conversation.

That evening, I saw a vulnerability in her, I had never seen before. This young lady, by a dint of her talent, hard work or fortune, had superstardom thrust upon her and seemed to have no private life anymore. She had become one of the most recognisable faces in the continent and whilst enjoying the adulation, she was also coming to terms with the scrutiny of her Privacy, which was not too palatable to her. I admired her courage and somehow felt that she would go places beyond Nollywood. I remember I told her so. Genevieve was quite particular about make-up. She would spend many minutes, ensuring that her face was well-powdered.

She had some pimple breakout on that shoot and wanted them less visible on screen. She would have mild arguments with the make-up artiste about the right powder application to her face and at times would go out of her way to make up herself after the make-up artiste must have finished. I found this quite amusing and in some cases, I did not mind her fussiness over her make-up as the script progressed from a flashback period to ‘present day’ and I felt if she had to hide her blotches, she was very well within her ambits to do so, in tandem with the character who was supposed to be trendy.

I remember when we went to Ikorodu village to shoot some forest scenes, it was getting late and we had one night scene left to shoot. The time was about 7.30pm and it was supposed to be the last scene for the day. Genevieve took some extra time on her make-up. Stella walked up to me in agitation. ‘Sir, please tell Genevieve to hurry up. Its late, we are in the middle of nowhere and she’s still making up. I am a wife and mother. I have kids to attend to at home tonight.

She should not waste our time.’ I looked at Stella in surprise. There was an unusual edge in her voice. I could not fathom out why she would sound a bit antagonistic. I knew she had a point on the time being spent by Genevieve in making up but I always assumed she had been ok with it. But she did have a point about the time being a bit late and we were actually miles away from the main town in a bush somewhere! I walked up to Genevieve who was rubbing powder on her face, while the make-up artist stood nearby, warily telling her she had over-done her face . ‘Genny, lets shoot this. Its late. Come on!’ ‘Just a minute, sir’ she replied.

She spent a few more seconds dabbing powder over a big pimple on her cheek. Stella was behind me, scowling and tapping her foot, impatiently. I took the whole incident between them as one of some brimming rivalry among actors which directors and Producers face at times on set so I did not pay much notice to it.

However, I was taken unawares by what happened a few days later!

Imo: Reeling under kidnappers’ onslaught !

IMO State is reeling under a scourge as a result of which many now live in fear.

Kidnapping, which started among militants in the creeks of the Niger Delta has found fertile ground in Imo State and now anxiety and uncertainty are almost palpable across the land.

In ‘the Eastern Heartland’ the fear of kidnappers is the beginning of wisdom as people dread being abducted almost anywhere and their families forced to pay huge ransoms for heir freedom, which ,unfortunately, is not guaranteed.

Almost anyone can be kidnapped : medical doctors,journalists, politicians, top civil servants, traditional rulers and even women have fallen prey.

A number of kidnap victims have been killed, even after their families paid the huge sums of money demanded by their abductors, while some have had the special misfortune of being abducted , not once, but twice.

The litany of victims is long and also representative of all corners of the state. Without necessarily following a chronological order, some of the most notable incidents include last year’s kidnapping of Dr. Uche Anyanwu from Mbano. His abductors demanded N30 million which his family struggled to raise. After several weeks, they paid the ransom only for Anyanwu’s lifeless body to be found shortly after.

The same fate befell Dr. Amako, from Ohii, Owerri West who was kidnapped and shot on the leg. The gunmen who demanded several millions as ransom held him for days , until one day they dumped him by a roadside . The wound on his leg had become dangerously infected. From where he was dumped, Dr. Amako was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri and a few hours later, he died.

A former Chief of Staff and later Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vin Udokwu was kidnapped and held for several months, even after paying the ransom. He refuses to disclose what he paid.

About the same period, a former Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Godfrey Dikeocha, was also abducted and held for months, most of which he spent blindfolded. An undisclosed ransom was paid and he was freed. Sources said he went blind temporarily until quick medical attention restored his sight.

Traditional rulers have not been spared as Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri of Obi Orodo, Mbaitoli was kidnapped, but not before his abductors shot dead his father and brother.

Another ruler, Eze Chijioke Okwara in Orlu spent several weeks in captivity and refuses to disclose what he paid as ransom.

The kidnappers have scant regard for places of worship.

The newly recognized Eze Oliver Nwaozuzu of Awo Mbieri and his wife were attending Mass on a Sunday when armed men stormed the church and whisked the couple away. Eze Nwozuzu was held for days until an undisclosed ransom was paid.

Mrs. Stella Odimegwu, wife of the former Managing Director of Nigeria Breweries Limited and at present, Chairman National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Festus Odumegwu, was kidnapped while she was worshipping in their village church in Orsu, about two years ago. Reports said a fat ransom was paid for her freedom.

In Aboh Mbaise, the wife of a former Local Council Chairman, Richmond Osuji’s was also kidnapped last year and an undisclosed ransom paid before her release.

Also, a journalist, Chief Ndubuizu Ugorji of Imo Broadcasting Corporation Television was in June this year kidnapped just in front of his abode at Orji, Owerri North Local Council of the state.

Sources told The Guardian that friends, fellow workers and relatives raised about N2 million to secure his release.

Pastor Anselem Iwuala, was last year abducted as he was travelling along Okpala-Mbaise Road to his home, Egberede Nguru, Aboh Mbaise. He spent about seven days with his abductors as negotiation for payment of N100 million was going on. When his family could only pay N500,000 of the amount demanded by his abductors, he was killed.

Another ruler in the state, Eze Stanley Akunatoof Umueze Abazu, Ogwa Mbaitoli Local Council was killed after an attempt to abduct him failed..

A retired Superintendent of Police Moses Ejeka, was kidnapped more than a year ago and he spent almost three months in captivity.

A lady, Ugo Mma, was kidnapped along MCC Road, Owerri until a ransom was paid.

A two-time member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Celestine Ngobiwu was kidnapped twice.

In one of the incidents, his orderly was said to have been killed.

Two other personalities in the state, a Permanent Secretary, Iyke Amafili and a former Imo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress Steve Ibe, had also been kidnapped.

They were held for days until undisclosed ransoms were paid.

A High Court Judge was kidnapped in Owerri more than a year ago and another, Justice Ngozi Okpara, shot along the popular Tetlow Road, Owerri by suspected kidnappers.He survived after treatment.

A Community leader in Awo Omama, Chidiebere Nwanyanwu, was kidnapped and an undisclosed ransom paid before his release.

Just last Sunday August 26, 2012, the Principal Secretary in the office of the Imo State Deputy Governor, E menike Ihekwoaba, was kidnapped at Amaraku, Isiala Mbano .

He was on his way to his village in Nkwerre and had alighted to buy something when the kidnappers surrounded him and bundled the massively-built man into the boot of their car and sped off. His wife and driver escaped. But the government seems , at last , to have picked-up the gauntlet.

The Commissioner of Police, Christopher Dega now an Assistant Inspector General (AIG), told The Guardian that the Command has devised a technology to track down the kidnappers. He refused to disclose it.

“We have a technology to trap them. We can not disclose that. They are in for a hard time”, he said.

Also, the state governor , Rochas Okorocha says any traditional ruler in whose domain there is an incident of kidnapping risks losing his salary and would be suspended. Any building used for such purpose would be confiscated by the state government, while any kidnapper caught would face capital punishment based on the law passed by the state Assembly.

Meanwhile, soldiers of 34 Field Artillery Brigade, Obinze, have begun a massive man hunt of kidnappers in forests in all the 27 councils of the state.

[b]Unbelievable: Man, 25,allegedly hacked uncle to death!

EBONYI State Police Command, Friday, said it arrested one Ifeanyi Okorie, 25, who hailed from Amatakwu, Ugwulangwu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi state for allegedly killing his uncle with a machete.

According to the Command, the suspect had on Thursday after waking up from sleep, grabbed a cutlass and hacked to death his 65 years old uncle, Uwajie Obasi and that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to have committed the crime.

Confirming the arrest of the suspect, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sylvester Igbo stated that “A case of murder was reported at Ohaozara Police Station on 30th 2015 at about 1900hrs.

It was alleged that one Ifeanyi Okorie aged 25 yrs of Amatakwu Ugwulangwu killed his uncle one Uwajie Obasi, 65 yrs old of the same address. The suspect has been arrested and he has made useful statement.”

DSP Igbo revealed that during interrogation, the suspect noted that the reason he killed his uncle was because he had a dream where he saw his uncle chasing him with a machete with the intention of killing him and that when he woke up, he grabbed a cutlass and killed his uncle to forestall such incident from happening to him.

“When he was asked why he killed his uncle, he said that he had a dream and saw his uncle chasing him with a machete trying to kill him, so when he woke up he took a machete and killed his uncle before he could actualise his dream.”

The suspect according to the PPRO will soon be charged to court after the police must have concluded investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased, Uwajie Obasi had already been deposited at the Okposi General Hospital Mortuary, Ohaozara where autopsy on the body is expected to be carried out.

[b]Officers of the Ebonyi State Police Command, on Tuesday, announced the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the murder of a 7-year-old girl, Ukamaka Ogboji.

The victim was allegedly killed for ritual purposes on Sunday at Agubia in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state. The suspects had earlier kidnapped Ogboji for monetary gains, and then dismembered her body parts before dumping same in a cassava farm.



The State Police Command spokesperson, Sylvester Igbo, while confirming the arrest of the suspects, commended the community youth organisation known as Ebonyi Youth Assembly for their assistance towards the arrest of the suspects.

Igbo revealed that two of the suspects had already confessed to the crime, adding that the police had commenced full investigation to ascertain the motive behind the brutal killing of the deceased.
“What we have observed at the scene made us to attribute the killing to ritual killing and not kidnapping, because the corpse of the deceased was without two legs, hands and eyes,” he said.

“From the act, it is a ritual killing. Through police investigation, we have been able to arrest seven suspects, among whom two have confessed to the crime. One of them confessed that his mother was the spiritual mother of the girl when she was baptised.”

GUNMEN have abducted Emenike Ihekwuaba, the principal secretary /permanent secretary of Imo State Deputy Governor, Jude Agbaso.

Agbaso was said to have begun a search for his aide.

The Media Assistant to Agbaso, Mr. Onyema Okpara, who confirmed the incident to The Guardian yesterday morning, said the abductors stopped the government’s official as he was in the company of his wife and his driver late on Sunday.

He disclosed that the armed men did not seize Ihekwuaba’s car but rather took him to their vehicle’s booth and drove him to an unknown destination.

As at the time of filing this report, Okpara said the government was still searching to ensure that Ihekwuaba was released.

He disclosed further that the incident took place at Amaraku Junction, Isiala Mbano Local Council of Imo State, as Ihekwuaba had alighted to buy a few things at the junction. When his wife and driver saw that the deputy governor’s aide had been held, they took to their heels, he said.

He said: “My brother, you can imagine how massive the man is. They held him and put him in their vehicle’s booth. His wife and driver ran away. I think from the way it happened, they came for him. We have been running around to establish where they took him took to. We are yet to establish communication with him. You know, normally this people can stay up to three days from what they have done to others. We have reported to the SSS and police and they are working. The deputy governor is worried.”

Okpara said the victim was on his way to Nkwerre, his hometown, for a function when the ugly incident took place, adding that effort made to rescue him at the spot was futile.

Ihekwuaba was said to have returned from the Cathedral of Transfiguration of Our Lord (CATOL), an Anglican Cathedral, where he is said to be one of the senior church wardens.

Many wealthy personalities are now in hiding following the wave of crime in the 27 local councils.

Only yesterday, a former official of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Charles Nwosu, was shot dead at New Market, along Douglas Road, Owerri. His wife was abducted and later abandoned somewhere away from the scene. The Holy Ghost College, Owerri, Principal, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Ogu, escaped by a whisker as hoodlums suspected to be cultists, shattered his bedroom.

AWKA—A YOUNG man in his early twenties, Mr. Junior Egbunike, was, yesterday, confirmed dead following injuries sustained while pursuing his father’s kidnappers at the commercial town of Onitsha.

Mr. Amulunanma Egbunike was returning home with his wife and son simply known as Junior after the day’s business at the weekend in Onitsha and as they got very close to their house at the Onitsha Inland Town, hoodlums suspected to be kidnappers blocked his car and dragged him into their own car and drove off.

His son, who was driving his father’s car, pursued them with his mother also in the car. But barely 400 meters away, the car got involved in a head on collision with another car and both mother and son sustained serious injuries.

Junior, who had been in coma since the incident, gave up the ghost yesterday at a hospital in Onitsha, while his mother had been discharged from hospital.

With the death of Junior, the Egbunike family has lost the only child left, having lost the family’s only daughter some years ago.

Meantime, the kidnapped Egbunike is yet to regain his freedom.

[b]More than 6, 000 Nigerian Citizens jailed Abroad for drug traffickin​g Offenses' - NDLEA

Not more than 6,000 Nigerians are serving various jail terms for drug-related offences abroad, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said. According to the NDLEA, Nigeria is the only African country with such a frightening figure.

The agency said that the figure may be higher as the available data could not be said to be totally exhaustive. NDLEA Director General, Mr. Femi Ajayi, told the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Matters that Iran has 4,000 inmates, Brazil 500, Thailand 500 and Malaysia 300.

He said: "The bulk of those caught for drug-related offences outside the country were from the South-East with majority coming from Anambra State. "I do not know what we can do to the upsurge of our brothers from the South East-who indulges in this kind of business.

Can you believe that of the 500 Nigerians in Thailand prisons, 480 of them are from the South-East and 450 from the figure are from Anambra State".

Ajayi, however, decried lack of adequate funding of the agency's activities, adding that the development has had negative impact on its ability to fight drug trafficking
