Nigerian student, John Amechi Eze, 23, to be hanged in Malaysia for drug traffic

John Amechi Eze

John Amaechi Eze, a 23-yr-old Nigerian student studying at a college in Kuala, Lumpur in Malaysia has been sentenced to death by hanging over drug trafficking.

John was found guilty of cannabis trafficking two years ago but his sentencing took place few days ago.

According to the judge in charge of his case, the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against John Amaechi Eze.

According to reports on NewStraitsTimes, in his judgment, Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab said the accused claimed he was waiting to board an express bus at a restaurant in front of the Lye Huat Garden hall when he was arrested by police.

However, he said the court did not believe his claim that he did not own the luggage when witnesses had testified that he was with the luggage all the time.

After his sentencing, a blogger who lives in Malaysia by the name of Ola shared his experience on how Nigerians are battling to survive in Malaysia over racism and discrimination.

He additionally warned people against cocaine, drug trafficking.

Below is what Ola has to say;

Now, for anyone harboring thoughts of trafficking drugs to this country, this is what you get. It beats me why someone would risk their life, by taking banned substance to this racist called Malaysia, because when issued a visa, it is clearly stated that the punishment for drug trafficking in Malaysia is death.

To be fair and honest to Malaysia, there are some very nice and wonderful people out there, but they are greatly outnumbered by the bigots among them. I live and study in Malaysia and I’ve observed a bias pattern in judicial procedures and policing as regards drug trafficking and crime prevention.
My assertions are based on my day to day experience and observation as a resident.

I have no statistical analysis of the Nigerian population living in Malaysia neither do I have the exact figures or nationality of the number of cases prosecuted by the Malaysian judiciary.
From the Nigerian side, The easterners (Igbos) out-number other ethnic groups within the Nigerian community here. That’s why most Nigerians you meet are from the east.

A lot Nigerians you meet are not in Malaysia to study, though they are enrolled in one college or another, they are semi-illiterates or outright illiterates, very lousy, brash and arrogant (for reasons I don’t understand). Then we have the stranded group who were duped by travel agents into thinking the pasture in Malaysia is greener.

In short, You meet criminals of all shapes, size and age. They just sleep, eat, wake up, and hope the next Maga pays. They are so much, you’ll think all Nigerians living in Malaysia are criminals, but we have bright students doing well and graduating in Malaysian Universities, we have gainfully employed graduates trained by Malaysians themselves (few) and business men and women doing legitimate business exporting goods to and from Nigeria (also few compared to the population of the Nigerian community).

But the Yahoo boys and drug traffickers are so high in number it seems they’ve all relocated from Nigeria to Malaysia. Conditions here favour them.
Basic infrastructure is great here compared to what we have in Nigeria. 24 hours electricity, running water, well laid roads, affordable high speed internet, compact 3/4 bedroom apartment, affordable furniture, little or no scrutiny on international remittance etc. Malaysia is a Yahoo Boy’s paradise. Though, most foreigners especially new comers call them (Malaysians) lazy and stupid (I still don’t get the rationale behind that).

On the Malaysian side, you’ll meet the Malay Supremacist. A Muslim, religious bigot, loud, aggressive and assertive. He (male and female) hates Jews and despises Christians. He wants to protect the “sanctity” of Islam, State resources are at his disposal. His opinion and interest supercedes that of others. His ancestors are the first settlers in Peninsular Malaysia.

His interpretation of the Islamic text dictates and guides the Muslim community and some times the whole nation. His favourite question when he meets you for the first time in class or anywhere is “Are you Muslim?”. He runs the country and he knows it.

Then we have the Chinese Chauvinist, a business tycoon/ hard working student. Drives flashy cars, he believes his race is the best. He is rich and he has read stories of Nigerians using Malaysian girls as drug mules, black/chemical money stories; he has meet or read of stranded Nigerians who loiter around Kuala-Lumpur begging for money (these stranded guys don’t shower, so they stink).

He cringes when you happen to be in the same elevator, crosses to the other side of the road when you are walking towards each other and always thinks you need something from him any time you try to talk to him. He has held on to so many Nigerian horrible stories and thinks every Nigerian is like that.

Then, we have the Angry Indian, always pissed and mean-mugging you. He has been discriminated against so much that even his language is not included in the country’s ATM machine (LMAO). He is always trying to pick fights with you and the first comment he makes is “THIS IS MY COUNTRY!”.

He’ll smash his crash helmet on you at the slightest provocation or stab you. He also reads of atrocities committed by Nigerians and sees you as a threat.
So, living in Malaysia has made me a racism connoisseur of sought. In fact, I have become so sensitive that I believe I can tell if an individual is racist within a few seconds of being around them. There are people in Malaysia whose sole purpose in life is just to ruin your day. Racism in Malaysia is perfect. It is subtle when it needs to be and brass when necessary.

As a foreigner you might be misled into thinking Malaysia is a boring place and no one gives a damn about you, so you can do what ever you like and get away with it. No, you are seriously mistaken. Malaysia sometimes feels like the North-Korea we watch on T.V. Some citizens are very nosy and they watch and observe every move you make. I read a news article some weeks ago that says about 80% of Police personnel don’t do normal Policing but rather, spy and gather intelligence.

So, my point is this. Malaysia is a tightly controlled society where the authorities decide what business prospers, whether legal or illegal. Elements within the police control the drug trade, the distributors are under their command and they arrest them when it’s politically needed to unite the country against a common enemy. We hear of stories of Iranian and Arab drug traffickers who are quietly deported and warned never to return to Malaysia but other nationalities are shown off as trophy in front of news men who broadcast and publish sensational news headlines.

South-east Asian countries are united against drug trafficking and they hold meetings regularly to discuss new strategies on deterrent, Death (rolls eyes). So, it baffles me why people still take the risks John Amaechi Eze was sentenced on January 22; a British Grand mother Lindsay Sandiford was also sentenced to death on the same day in Indonesia.

In the year 2008, two Nigerians were executed in Indonesia and one in Singapore.

Nigerians, please stop trying to bring drugs into Malaysia.

A word they say is enough for the wise.

World Aids Day: Nigeria Records Decline In New Hiv Infections.. Anambra top chat

Nigeria recorded 300,000 new cases in 2012., even as the country was ranked as number eight among 12 countries in the world that have recorded a decline in the new Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, HIV, infection rate.

However,Benue state still leads other states in the federation in HIV prevalence with a prevalence rate of 10.7 percent, while Kebbi state, with 1.0% recorded the least prevalence rate in the country.

Benue

State is closely followed by Akwa Ibom with 10 percent,BayelsaState; 9.1 percent and Anambra, 8.1 percent.

InKadunawhich recorded 5.1 percent from seven percent in 2008, Governor Patrick Yakowa promised to ensure zero prevalence in the years to come, as according to him, government would do everything within its power to educate the people and provide drugs for HIV/AIDS patients..

Statistics released by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research at a programme to mark this year’s World AIDS Day yesterday in Lagosshowed that Nigeriaand 11 other countries recorded 20 percent reduction in new infection rate between 2001 and 2011.
OFFICIALS of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, ANSACA, expressed worry over the 8.7% HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the state which ranks it fourth in the country, saying that serious measures were being adopted to reduce the scourge.

TheBayelsaStategovernment has reaffirmed its commitment to the wellbeing of people living with HIV/AIDS, according to Governor Seriake dickson who spoke at a charity football match between the Creek Haven Young Stars and Creek Haven All Stars to mark the 2012 World HIV/AIDS Day at the Government House, Yenagoa.

dickson said government has approved stipends for patients through the State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, BYSACA.

Sharp decline in the number of people being infected with HIV since 2001 have occurred in the Caribbean (42 percent)and sub-SaharanAfrica(25percent). But the prevalence increased in the Middle East and North Africa, while nine percent was recorded inEast Asia.

However, there are no decline in HIV related death rates both inNigeriaandAfrica. According to the statistics, in 2008, the annual death rate inNigeriawas 192,000 but has risen to 217,148 deaths which may not be unconnected to lack of access to treatment. Out of 1.5 million Nigerians confirmed to be HIV positive, only 500,000 have access to antiretroviral drugs, which is key to managing the disease according to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, Director- General, Prof John Idoko.

Reeling out these statistics in Review of the National Response to HIV& AIDS”, the Dr. Oliver Ezechi, Clinical Sciences Division, NIMR, explained that the global theme for this year is “Getting to Zero AIDS Related Deaths” while the national theme is “Resourcing the National Response towards getting to the zero related AIDS deaths”

Speaking in another forum to mark the Day inLagos, Director/Head, Clinical Services Department,Institute of Human VirologyNigeria, Dr Ernest Ekong stressed that there is need for all to be committed to achieving zero new infections, zero discrimination against people living with HIV and zero AIDS related deaths.

Ekong further noted that : “Sub-Saharan Africa remains most severely affected, with nearly 1 in every 20s(4.9 percent) living with HIV and accounting for 69 percent of the people living with HIV worldwide. Although the regional prevalence of HIV infection is nearly 25 times higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than in Asia, almost 5 million people are living with HIV in South-South-East andEast Asiacombined.

“After Sub –Saharan Africa, the regions most heavily affected are the Caribbean and Eastern Europe andCentral Asia, where 1.0 percent of adults where living with HIV in 2011.”

Ekong noted that it is a critical issue that although approximately 1,555,780 People Living with HIV (PLHIV) require anti-retroviral drugs, about one third of the group are currently on treatment.”The gender dynamics in the profile of infections and the growing burden of the 2.2 million HIV orphans inNigeriahas made it necessary for the revised policy to critically address the rising HIV prevalence among women, the expansion in number of orphans and vulnerable children.

Other critical issues which the revised policy should also address, Ekong further stated include the stigmatization of PLHIV and violation of their rights as well as their roles and responsibilities, the differences in communication messages on abstinence, condom use etc in post-primary educational institutions, and “the issues associated with increased access to treatment and care,” he said.Ojukwu’s Will read, Bianca highly favoured

Rich robbers, kidnap kingpins are biggest investors in Anambra.

Build expensive homes, hotels with ill-gotten wealth •Their native doctors, armoury

From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

In Anambra state, kidnappers could be ranked among the biggest investors and employers of labour through their filthy lucre of abducting fellow human beings and demanding ransom for their release.

Through the illegal business and the huge profit, kidnappers in the state have devised a means of investing the money they get from ransom collected from relatives of their victims, in hotel business and other profitable business ventures.

Checks by Sunday Sun revealed that though the kidnappers are aware that their activities in many states attract capital punishment upon conviction, they are unrelenting due to the quick wealth and consequent affluence.

However, the police, other security agencies as well as the state government are not relenting in their efforts to flush out the criminals.

But as the fight against kidnappers continues, it has become obvious that the hoodlums have turned big time investors in various businesses with the usually heavy gains from their satanic acts.

Recently, some of the suspected kidnappers arrested in various parts of the state by the state Special Anti- Robbery Squad, (SARS) led by Mr. James Nwafor, allegedly made startling confessions about their huge financial muzzles.

It was gathered that during interrogation, some of them and their kingpins told policemen that their illegal business has made them as rich as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, reputed as the country’s richest man.

The suspects said they invested the money they received from ransom wisely in various profitable businesses and made sure they live in affluence and glamour as ‘big boys’.

According to a community leader in Oraifite who pleaded anonymity, “the suspects lived in affluence and glamour and paraded themselves as one of the richest people in the community with the large followers who are mainly youths”.

Sunday Sun further gathered that while some of the kidnappers wasted their money on frivolities and expensive life, some of them including the kingpins built expensive houses and hotels scattered all over the state and its environs.

Though the state governor, Mr. Peter Obi has clamped on some of the arrested kidnappers and demolished their homes built with ransom money, there are indications that many of such investments in cities across the country have not been discovered.

Suspects and their investments

Mr. Olisa Ifedika alias Ofeakwu who hails from Oraifite in Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra state allegedly made a confessional statement as the leader of one of the most dreaded kidnap gangs which led to the arrest of his partners and the discovery of their expensive homes.

He had completed his ultra-modern bungalow and almost completed the second two- storey building that he wanted to use as a hotel located near the main road in his community.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Balla Nasarawa said: “A hotel built by Ofeakwu at Ezumeri-Oraifite was nearing completion which has been located. The building was erected with ransom collected from their victims.”

According to the Police boss, the kidnap kingpin made confessional statement that led to the discovery of the house built by another dangerous kidnap kingpin, Okechukwu Amasiatu alias Okey Nnewi.

“One of the confessions was that one Okechukwu Amasiatu alias Okey Nnewi is the second most dangerous kidnapper to Olisa Ifedika. The investigations by the police led to the discovery of his residence located almost opposite Ezinifite Police Division in Nnewi South council area of the state.

“A magnificent bungalow of eight bedrooms built with ransom money collected from victims of kidnap was within a compound that belongs to his father. Okey Nnewi is still at large but efforts have been intensified to arrest him.

“He also gave another stunning revelation that their second armory is located at Uli. The confession led to the recovery of another catchments of arms and ammunition buried inside plastic containers by one Emeka Ezekude”, he said.

Emeka Ezekude

He hails from Uli in Ihiala council area of Anambra state and another “dangerous” kidnap suspect detained at the SARS office, Awkuzu in connection with high profile kidnap cases and robberies in various parts of the state.

Mr. Nasarawa told Sunday Sun that, “the said Emeka Ezekude was subsequently arrested and he confessed to the crime. Emeka Ezekude just like Okey Nnewi, also built two magnificent bungalows for himself and his mother. The buildings were built with ransom collected from victims of kidnap.”

Emeka Ibesi

He was arrested on September 12, 2012, in connection with the murder of two vigilantes. The Ak47 rifle used to kill the security men was recovered and he allegedly confessed to the crime. The police said that the suspect also confessed that his gang was responsible for most of the robberies and kidnappings at Nkpor, Umuoji, Ojoto, Agulu and its environs.”

The Commissioner said: “The suspect further mentioned one Omeregbema as their gang leader and stated that their victims were kept in a storey building built by their leader who is still at large, at Igbokwu community in Anyamelum council area of the state.

“The leader of this dreaded kidnap/armed robbery gang is reported to be a native doctor, and responsible for making charms and arming the suspects with charms to protect them from police bullets. He built a story building with the ransom collected from victims.”

However, Governor Peter Obi swung into action by demolishing some of the buildings that belong to the kidnap suspects in various communities including Oraifite, Uli, Agukwu Nri and other parts of the state.

Governor Obi said the action was to discourage youths who see the ill-gotten wealth of the kidnappers as proof of success and let them know that the government would not tolerate anyone found guilty of aiding and abetting kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.

Arrest of robbery suspects

The Anambra state police boss also said the command made impressive success in combating violent crimes in and across the state including armed robbery especially in the commercial cities of Onitsha , Nnewi and Awka.

“On October 1, 2012, at about 8am, on a tip off, SARS operatives arrested one Chidera Obiwuru and Onyebuchi Nnekwu with serious bullet wounds, having robbed one Chibuzor Akunna of his Mitsubishi L300 bus with registration No UMZ 19 XA. Items recovered from them included three locally made pistols with two live cartridges and a Nokia cell phone which was identified by the victim.”

The SARS operatives also raced to a robbery scene at Agbata Nsugbe and arrested one Chukwudi Ani and Chinedu Ajani with serious bullet wounds which they sustained during a gun battle with the police while others escaped with their arms and the loot.

“The suspects robbed one Ngozi (other names withheld) and her family of an undisclosed amount and other valuables. They confessed to the crime while manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang is still in progress”, he said.

Also, a police patrol team from Abagana Division in conjunction with Abba town vigilance group on October 8 arrested one Chinedu Slyvanus, a native of Imo state, resident in Abba and recovered one locally made double barrel pistol with three live cartridges, a Carter motorcycle with registration No Ebonyi, QD 266 AKW and three cell phones.

It was further gathered that the police patrol team attached to 3-3 Division and local vigilance group arrested Okwudili Aniukwu and Ifeanyi Chukwu at Agbata Nsugbe and recovered six and a half bags on Indian hemp, packets of paper wrappers, a lady’s motorcycle, two television sets and two small generating sets suspected to have been stolen.

Mr. Balla Nasarawa said that the Special Anti- Robbery Squad arrested a two suspected robbers while they were chasing a motorcyclist in a bid to snatching his motorcycle. He gave the names of the suspects as Daniel Igene alias Onwa and Simeon Boko, adding that, “they were apprehended with serious bullet injuries and a locally made double barrel gun cut to size with five live cartridges was recovered from them.”

Rescue of kidnap victims

The police in their bid to flush kidnappers out of the state recovered so many arms and ammunitions and arrested several suspects including a native doctor suspected to be making charms for criminals. Also, the police rescued some kidnap victims from their abductors.

“The SARS operatives arrested Uchenna Muodofor of Nnewi and his gang. The suspects were affiliated to the dreaded Olisa Ifedika alias Ofeakwu’s gang. They were responsible for most kidnappings in the state and its environs.

Also, the arrest of Obinna Ofor led to the rescue of one Onyekwelu Jonathan Eledu in a compound owned by one Onyeka at Osumoghu.

Policemen at the Uli police division, acting on a tip off, also rescued one 38-year-old Francis Amechi and Anichebe Sunday, both natives of Awka, who were allegedly kidnapped at Orlu in Imo state.

Politics / MASSOB Abducts BZM Group Leaders by aishatua1: 5:30am On Nov 02, 2012
MASSOB abducts splinter group leaders.

By Tony Edike
ENUGU—Barrister Benjamin Onwuka, leader of Biafra Zionist Movement, , whose group had announced its plan to re-declare the Republic of Biafra in Enugu on Monday, November 5, 2012, was, yesterday, allegedly abducted by members of the Ralph Uwazulike-led Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB.

Also whisked away from their residences to an unknown destination were the BZM National Chairman, Samuel Edeson, Nweke Nweke, National Secretary and Chukwuma Orienta, a member of the group from Onitsha.

However, MASSOB has said the BZM leaders where not abducted, but invited for questioning over their November 5 plans.

Meanwhile, BZM’s Director of Mobilisation, Cornelius Anyanwu, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen, yesterday, said the fierce-looking men believed to have been sent by Chief Uwazulike, stormed the residences of the four BZM leaders yesterday morning, forced them into their cars and drove them to an unknown place.

He said one of the BZM leaders called on phone to alert them that they were being driven to Uwazulike’s Okwe home in Imo State, explaining that the abduction of the group’s leaders was part of Uwazulike and his MASSOB’s plot to abort the planned re-declaration of Biafra on Monday, which, he said, had generated a lot of interest among Ndigbo, both in Nigeria and in Diaspora.

He said: “We have concluded all necessary arrangements for successful inauguration of Biafra Republic on November 5.

“The mobilisation of our supporters, including all Igbos had been intensified before this sabotage by the MASSOB leader, who has since abandoned the Biafran agitation and resorted to working with the Nigerian government to subdue Biafra.”

According to him, the BZM had scheduled a meeting in Enugu, yesterday morning ahead of Monday’s event, before the abduction.

MASSOB’s spokesman, Mr. Uchenna Madu, confirmed that the BZM leaders were under their custody but explained that members of the Uwazulike-led MASSOB in Enugu State only “summoned” them for questioning regarding their plan for November 5.

He said: “Our men did not abduct the BZM leaders. Rather, we invited them to a meeting to find out why they want to re-declare Biafra after it had been declared many years ago.

“We want to reason with them about what they planned for Monday. We are in support of Biafra but what they (BZM) are doing amounts to making caricature of the Biafran struggle.

“It must stop because the security operatives are disturbing our members thinking that MASSOB is behind the move.”

Madu denied allegations by BZM members that the Federal Government was using Uwazulike against their campaign for the actualisation of Biafra, saying there was no pact between the government and the MASSOB leader.

Nigerian emerges UNCTAD-ISAR chairman

November 1, 2012 by Ademola Alawiye Leave a Comment

The Chief Executive Officer, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, Mr. Jim Obazee, has been unanimously elected as the chairman of the 29th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development inter-governmental working group of experts on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting.

A statement made available to our correspondent on Wednesday said this was the first time a Nigerian had been elected to chair the group of experts on this subject for the United Nations.

UNCTAD-ISAR is a specialised inter-governmental forum based on consensus building and voluntary cooperation among participating countries.

Every year, UNCTAD hosts the group of experts from over 50 countries on topical global agenda on financial reporting and corporate governance and other issues of common concern to member states besides informal exchange of experiences and best practices.

Within the year, they also host sessions on issues of urgent global importance that bear on institutional reforms and financial reporting.

The statement said, “Currently, the group is holding its 29th session in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 31 to November 2, 2012. The main agenda item for the 29th session deals with regulatory and institutional foundations for high quality corporate reporting.

“It will also review the recent development in the area of corporate reporting and discuss the result of the pilot tests of the UNCTAD-ISAR’s accounting development toolkits for assessing country’s capacity building needs.”

The statement said that Obazee would chair the activities of the group for the next UNCTAD- ISAR calendar year.

Established in 1964, UNCTAD promotes the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy.

UNCTAD, it said, had progressively evolved into an authoritative knowledge-based institution whose work was aimed at helping to shape current policy debates and thinking on development, with a particular focus on ensuring that domestic policies and international action were mutually supportive in bringing about sustainable development.

Will Ferguson wins Canada’s highest literary prize for novel on Nigerian internet scams

October 31, 2012 by Agency Reporter 2 Comments

Celebrated humorist and author, Will Ferguson, has been named the winner of Canada’s most prestigious literary prize for a novel on the dark world of Nigerian internet scams.

He won the $50,000 Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel “419.”

Ferguson’s winning novel, about an email scam, marked a serious turn for the comedic writer, who has written a dozen books ranging from budget travel guides to works of literary fiction, Vancouver Sun reports.

Penning a more serious work clearly didn’t cause Ferguson, 48, to lose any of his satiric edge.

Earlier on Tuesday night during the award, he was asked about the lavish praise the Giller judging panel heaped on “419.”

He quipped, “I think that means they suspect I have incriminating photographs of (them), which I don’t.”

He said further, “It began with the thought that maybe there really is a Nigerian prince somewhere who can’t gain his freedom for lack of funds . . . but when I started writing it, the story began to turn dark, all by itself.”

“I’d like to raise a toast to the written word,” the kilt-wearing Ferguson said as he accepted the award, pulling out a flask.

“So. Thanks. Ladies and gentlemen: To the written word. And finally, to answer the question you’re all wondering — yes I have something on underneath!”

His book was up against titles by Montreal-bred authors Nancy Richler, Alix Ohlin and Kim Thuy. Rounding out the Giller short list was Russell Wangersky of St. John’s.

With a short list chock-full of newcomers, this year’s Giller was said to be a wide open race. Some of the nominees sounded downright dazed to be included at the glitzy awards show.

Wangersky, who attended the black-tie bash with his editor-wife Leslie Vryenhoek, found the experience “very, very strange.”

“It’s a long way from working in your kitchen and making sure the cat’s water dish is full, which is more like what writers deal with,” said the journalist, nominated for his short story collection “Whirl Away.”

“(These aren’t) my clothes — it’s my shoes and my bow tie and the rest of it is someone else’s stuff. It’s very, very different.”

Ohlin’s “Inside” — about a group of characters trying to help each other — is also up for the $25,000 Rogers Writers’ Trust of Canada fiction prize. The author — who was raised in Montreal and is now a professor of creative writing at Lafayette College in Easton, Penn., — said the nominations have helped readers find her work.

“I’m not someone that anyone had ever heard very much about in Canada up until now, so the idea that anyone is talking about the books at all, or reading them or emailing me about it, it’s very new and it feels very wonderful.”

Hosted for the second year in a row by CBC personality Jian Ghomeshi, the show — broadcast from the Ritz Carlton — featured presentations from actress Kim Cattrall, gold medallist Rosie MacLennan and actor Allan Hawco.

Established in 1994 by businessman Jack Rabinovitch in honour of his late wife, literary journalist Doris Giller, the prize celebrates the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English. Finalists receive $5,000.

This year’s jury members — Roddy Doyle of Ireland, Gary Shteyngart of New York, and Toronto-based Anna Porter — read 142 works of fiction submitted by 51 publishing houses from across Canada.

Richler was nominated for the mother-daughter post-war saga “The Imposter Bride” (Harper Collins Canada), and Thuy for the immigrant novel “Ru” (Random House of Canada), translated by Sheila Fischman from the original French version that won a 2010 Governor General’s Literary Award
