Five Nigerians have been arrested for allegedly trafficking in drugs in India and Malaysia.

A 35-year-old Nigerian, Uche Sylvester, who used to traffic drugs between Mumbai and Delhi, was arrested in the capital and 100 grams of cocaine was recovered from him, the Times of India reported on Sunday.

Sylvester was arrested near the Delhi airport on Thursday while returning from Mumbai, police said on Friday.

Indian Narcotics Control Bureau had earlier arrested three Nigerians for allegedly trying to smuggle out heroin worth Rs 2.50 crore from the Asian country.

Ude Chidi and Obumuneme Nwachukwu were arrested in New Delhi in separate alleged drug smuggling attempts.

Also, Ikechukuri Otuata, (32) was arrested after he was found in possession of 64g of cannabis.

He was arrested on Friday at the Saligao junction during routine late-night patrol by police sub-inspector Akshay Amonkar.

Since he was behaving suspiciously, the police team detained him for questioning and a search resulted in the discovery of 64g of cannabis from him.

Otuata was later detained in police custody for further investigation.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old Nigerian registered as a student of a private college in Kuala Lumpur since June last year, was found with 0.85kg of methamphetamine concealed in a special compartment in his laptop bag, New Straits Times reported on Sunday.

Malaysian custom chief Siti Baya said the man was detained by Customs when his laptop bag showed a suspicious image when it was scanned on his arrival from Lagos.

TWO pressure group championing the realization of the Biafra Republic, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and Biafra Zionist Movement, BZM, are trading words over which is truly fighting the cause of Biafra.

While BZM said that it had planned a re-declaration of Biafra Republic on November, MASSOB dismissed the move, saying the declaration was done by its leader, Chief Ralph Uwazurike on May 22, 2000 when he hoisted the Biafran flag at Fauks Road, Aba, Abia State.

MASSOB director of information, Mr. Uchenna Madu, had said that the stage of declaration in the Biafra struggle had passed, describing as suicidal any move to trade with the name of Biafra.

He said: “MASSOB under Uwazurike, sent Biafran bill of right to the United Nations before hoisting the flag at Aba and observer status had already been granted which prompted many nations to allow Biafra have mission houses in their countries, while Biafra Radio had been established.

“Because of Biafra, Uwazurike sacrificed his houses in Lagos and Imo states and saw and conquered death. He is still faithful and unrelenting to the struggle and millions of MASSOB members adore him.”

But leader of BZM, Mr. Ben Onwuka dismissed MASSOB’s claim, asking it to produce and publish to the world the application it made to the UN for the observer status for Biafra as it had done and the response of the UN when the said application was made.

He also faulted the claim that Biafra Bill of Right was submitted at the UN, saying the group only wanted to deceive the people.

His words: “This is a disgrace to this group and it shows that Biafrans are being deceived all these years. No country on earth has ever made that kind of application to the UN .

“A Bill of Right is not what the UN can grant to a country. A Bill of Right is a collected rights and privileges which a country gives to its citizens as their rights to enjoy within the country. It is not a UN issue. If anyone goes to the UN and says such a thing, they will laugh and mock you.

“The truth is that Biafra has never been discussed at the UN since 1970, except now that the BZM has taken up the challenge to make Biafra a world issue at the UN. BZM has made the application and we shall be going there at the UN to defend and obtain the observer status for Biafra.”

Excavation threatens Abia community

On August 26, 2012 · In News

By Anayo Okoli Umuahia

ISIALA-ISUAMAWU people in Amaba community of Isuikwuato LGA, Abia State have sent a save our soul [SOS] message to the state government over massive sand and stone excavation going on in the community.

According to the residents, no less than 15 houses are presently under severe threat and could cave in into the gully created by the excavation in the community unless urgent action is taken by the government.

Ironically, the excavation was being engineered by some indigenes of the community who hire people allegedly from Ebonyi State to do the excavation while they sold the sand and stones to end users, which include contractors and house builders.

Sunday Vanguard learnt that past efforts by the leadership of the community to stop the excavation had not worked as those behind the business had always threatened to deal with any person who stood on the way of their illegal but lucrative business.

Meanwhile, no kobo from the exacavation goes to the state or local government.

The Federal Government owned Okigwe-Uturu-Isiukwuato-Bende-Arochukwu road passing through the community is also under threat. Already, some portion of the road in the area where the excavation is going on is about to be cut off.

When contacted, the Transition Committee Chairman of Isiukwuato Council, Chief Enyinnaya Nwosu, confirmed the fear of the community and condemned the activities of the excavators. According to Nwosu, the deputy governor of the state, Chief Emeka Ananaba, visited the area last week and directed that the excavation be halted.

Kidnappers storm Owerri, shoot two!

BY CHIDI NKWOPARA, OWERRI.
The menace of armed hoodlums resurfaced in Owerri again Sunday morning as two persons were shot by a gang believed to be kidnappers that stormed the municipality in Jeep.

Vanguard investigations revealed that a man and his wife, whose identities could not be ascertained at press time, was driving in his Peugeot 407 saloon with registration number, Abuja, HM 301 ABC, when the gangsters struck.

It was equally gathered that the hoodlums ambushed the couple in front of the New Market, along Douglas Road, while an armed man jumped out of the Jeep and ordered the hapless man into their vehicle.

A vulcanizer, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard that “as the man was pleading to know what his offence was, a second armed man jumped out of the Jeep, cocked his gun and told the apparently frightened man that they were not joking about the order”.

Continuing, the vulcanizer said that “apparently confused, the man jumped across the gutter and was about running away from the scene when one of the hoodlums shot him at close range, and forced the man’s wife into their Jeep and drove off”.

Similarly, the driver of a Toyota bus, with registration number BS 365 MUS, who was mending his tyre at the time of the attack, was equally shot in his leg.

Vanguard was equally told that some sympathizers quickly arranged and rushed the dying man to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, for immediate medical attention, while an army patrol team was the first to arrive the scene at about 11.30am.

When Vanguard visited the scene, some expended shells of ammunition, believed to be that of AK 47 rifle, littered the place.

Some of the sympathizers, who spoke to Vanguard lamented that the fragile peace in Owerri, Imo State capital, has again been badly jolted.

“If hoodlums can operate with such ease in Owerri, where the headquarters of all the security outfits are domiciled, only God knows what is happening in the rural communities. The earlier government stops paying lip service to security issues the better for us all”, Chief Emeka Ugwuanya reasoned.

Nigerian sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Malaysia!

On August 26, 2012 · In News

2:00 pm

Kuala Lumpur (AFP) – A Malaysian court on Sunday sentenced a Nigerian man to death after convicting him of trafficking more than 14 kilos (31 pounds) of marijuana over the land border with Thailand, a report said.

The court said there was little doubt Moses Chinedu Nwosu, 50, was guilty of the crime — punishable with death by hanging — after the drugs were seized from him on the night of March 25 last year, Bernama news agency said.

The man’s lawyer could not be reached for comment.

The accused testified the drugs carried in a black bag belonged to another man he was travelling with from the Thai border to the northern Malaysian town of Alor Setar, Bernama said citing the judgment.

“However, according to a witness, Moses was seen carrying the black bag… and its key was found in his pocket,” the judge said.

The court decision is the latest in a clampdown by Malaysian authorities on alleged foreign drug traffickers.

A Kuala Lumpur court charged 10 Iranians, an Uzbek and a local with trafficking methamphetamine last week.

An Australian nurse and Nigerian man were also charged with trafficking drugs last month, a case which has attracted media attention worldwide.

Since 1960, more than 440 people have been executed in Malaysia, including two Australians sentenced to death in 1986 for heroin trafficking — the first Westerners to be executed under tough anti-drug laws.

Woman jailed for removing opponent’s 4 teeth

Abuja - An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada on Thursday sentenced Eucharia Mwachukwu to six months imprisonment for causing grievous hurt to one Rakiya Umar.

The judge, Mr Waziri Adamu, however, gave her an option of N5,000 fine.

Adamu said that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the convict committed the offence.

Mr Luke Elemechi, the defence counsel, said his client was a first offender and prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy.

He said the convict was a widow and the only person taking care of her children, adding that any harsh punishment would not only affect her but also her dependants.

Italian writer held over murder of Nigerian prostitute Anthonia Egbuna in Italy

An Italian man has been arrested over the murder of a Nigerian prostitute after police searching her apartment found a short story he wrote with close similarities to the killing.

Police in the northern Italian city of Turin discovered the nine-page story entitled "The Rose and the Lion" among the belongings of Anthonia Egbuna, whose body was fished out of the river Po in February. Anthonia had been stabbed to death.

Police took some months to identify the body and then visited Egbuna's apartment last month.
In the murder case, reminiscent of the 1992 Hollywood thriller film "Basic Instinct", aspiring author Daniele Ughetto Piampaschet was arrested last week because of likenesses between his short story and the real murder, the police said.

He denies murder.

In "Basic Instinct", Sharon Stone's character Catherine Tramell had described in a novel she wrote a rock star's murder with an ice pick that was later committed in real life, making her the top suspect.

After finding 34-year-old Ughetto Piampaschet's short story, police say they discovered he had been in a relationship with Egbuna, then 19, between February and August of last year.

They alleged in a statement that he murdered her in November because their relationship was going badly and she refused to give up prostitution - in what appeared to be a link to the short story.

"He loved her and he loved her more every day, but she did not want to leave the streets. All his efforts to convince her to change her life had failed. And for this reason she had become his torturer," reads an excerpt of the story quoted by police.

Nigerian Man, Edwin Ozoani, dies after cocaine burst in his stomach – NDLEA

Edwin Ozoani allegedly ingested 11 wraps but only excreted 10. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the death of Edwin Ozoani, 34, a commercial bus driver, who died after a wrap of cocaine he ingested burst in his stomach.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, said the deceased, who returned from Brazil on-board a South African Airline flight, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

"During screening, he tested positive to drug ingestion and was placed on observation," he said. "He excreted 10 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine, weighing 180 grammes. While still under observation, he complained of stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died. A post-mortem examination revealed that his death was due to one of the wraps of cocaine he ingested that ruptured in his stomach."

Reacting to the development, Ahmadu Giade, NDLEA Chairman, called for stiffer penalties against convicted drug traffickers.

"Until we get the penalty right, drug trafficking will remain attractive," he said. "Every case of drug trafficking involving type A drugs like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine runs into several millions of naira. We must therefore wield the big stick against offenders to serve as deterrent. I am optimistic that adherence to stringent bail conditions and minimum of 15 years jail term will turn the tide of events.

This death is sad and painful. The deceased would have been alive to face trial and ultimately given opportunity to learn from his mistakes. I urge members of the public to shun drug trafficking and make quality choices that will enable them maximise their destinies."

The NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar added that the family members of the deceased have applied for the corpse to be released to them after the autopsy.

“Following the sad incident, we made contact with the family members," he said. "They also witnessed the operation where the ruptured wrap of cocaine that killed their son was recovered from his stomach. The agency has also granted their request for the corpse to be released to them." Dailytimes
