Culture / One On One With Ifa (a Yoruba Deity Blackmailed By Importers Of Foreign Culture by ajasaolufemi(m): 8:22pm On Sep 06, 2013
Witnessing the 2013 edition of Ifa Festival put together by Olokun Festival Foundation, the cultural promotion arm of Oodua People’s Congress led by Otunba Gani Adams, changed virtually all the wrong perception I had about Ifa as a deity and its worshipers as people.

The annual festival was celebrated in June this year at Abule-Ado, Mile 2/Badagry Expressway, Lagos; it was a period of reconnection to traditional root and the occasion re-ignited me as a true born of the Yoruba descent. In Yoruba land, there are many systems of divination used by its people but the most important is Ifa and it remains a central part of the people’s existence. However, the arrival of missionaries, colonial masters and Western type of lifestyle, marked the beginning of depletion in the level of interest placed in Ifa as a religion.

These eventually declined Ifa followership both in the local and global cultural market particularly when measured in terms of level of acceptance. Notwithstanding, Ifa culture still resides in the hearts and souls of the Yoruba people. Despite the so many rejections, Ifa adherents continue to accord the religion all reverence and respect it deserves. Surprisingly, Ifa as a religion is equally flourishing in other countries like Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and others due to its practicability.....Read MORE..http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/escape-demystifying-ifa-worship-worshippers/

Commercial activities were partially paralyzed in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, yesterday as angry youths and commercial motorcyclist popularly called Okada clashed with policemen over the alleged killing of one okada rider by a police official identified as Haruna.
According to eyewitnesses, the fracas started a day before yesterday, when police officials allegedly shot sporadically at okada riders who were protesting seizure of their motorcycles at Ladega, Ikorodu, leaving one Lekan popularly called ‘Ifa’ dead and many others injured.
Speaking on the incidence, Chairman, Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State, Ikorodu Branch, Mr. Kayode Jimoh said the incident occurred around 2.30pm.
Jimoh furthered: “Around 2.30pm, four policemen attached to RRS came in a white Toyota Hilux van and parked around Ladega junction. The police driver remained inside the van while three policemen, identified as Haruna, Ayodele and Ismaila, alighted from the vehicle.
“The policemen were trying to seize the bike from Lekan but he resisted. Haruna suddenly cocked his rifle and opened fire, killing him on the spot. The bullet also injured a pregnant woman who was close by on her arm.”
Incidentally, okada riders and angry youth gathered on the second day, mounted road blocks around Sabo, Garage and Ladega area of Ikorodu where they were confronted by policemen and OP Mesa’s and officials of the Rapid Response Squad .

The angry mob started hauling stones and other objects at the security operatives but they were dispersed few minutes after the policemen used tears gas to disperse the crowd, shooting into the air severally.

Politics / Sweet Read: My Father Still Owes Me A Pet Dog –olaokun (wole Soyinka's Son) by ajasaolufemi(m): 11:12am On Jul 12, 2013
Doctor Olaokun Abidoye Soyinka, is the first child of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka; and a chip off the old block when it comes to wits and intellectualism. The Commissioner for Health in Ogun State reveals a quirky perspective about his father in this interview granted ADENRELE NIYI in commemoration of his father’s birthday tomorrow. Excerpts:

What’s your profoundest childhood memory of your father?

When he ran over my pet dog. Actually, it wasn’t his fault – he went to pick my sisters and brought them home from somewhere. Because they had misbehaved at some point, when he dropped them in front of the house he did not drive off immediately but was talking to them for a while. The puppy had come out to greet them and when he found he was being ignored he went under the car to get some shade. You can imagine the rest. I thought it might be a nice gesture for his birthday to let him know that I forgive him –and to remind him that he still owes me a dog....http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/my-father-still-owes-me-a-pet-dog-olaokun-soyinka/#!prettyPhoto

CRAZE FOR THE FORBES REPORTS- Olufemi Ajasa
Wondering how much this people had coughed out just to be celebrated on Forbes cover page (we all knw space in print is for sale as time on electronic media)?juxtaposing this with the several international ratings and awards that the country chases in order to rig statistics in their favor, we will clearly see that it's better to invest in our economy sincerely than spend huge fund to deceive the international community who were never at a time convinced by our deceits. At a time our fore fathers were enslaved...right now we sell ourselves even to the wrong market. This xtrashow of achievements is like the Owambe thing, one person does it and it becomes the public craze. In this manner, we have consistently portrayed ourselves as people who spend any amount to impress those who don’t value them.

Infact, I was inspired to typed ‘meaning of Owambe’ in google and saw something far more interesting -------- As defined by urban dictionary : A large, grandiose party thrown by Nigerians anywhere in the world, especially Yoruba Nigerians that involves a lot of food, dancing, loud music, and spraying (Nigerian term meaning the act of throwing money on a dancing person). There are often numerous guests, and usually the guests are divided into groups according to their aso ebi(uniform - some people might wear white and blue, some gold and red, etc). These parties take days and sometimes weeks and months of preparation, and have been known to block entire streets and roads, especially in Lagos, Nigeria..... http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=owambe (check here).
