CelebritiesRe: Larry Koldsweat Prefers To Be A Yoruba In Another Life by AjoMmuo: 2:36pm On Mar 17, 2013
I am neither here nor there regarding the topic at hand. My interest is to straighten one or two things out...

Larry Koldsweat is indeed Igbo of Krio descent.I once wrote this on this forum:
...Yes, we still have Krios in Onitsha but they are well integrated now. Surnames like Coker, Venn, Brown, Koldsweat, etc. I hope everybody still remember Franca Brown of the old NTA TV series Behind the Cloud. She is Onitsha. Larry Koldsweat of Nollywood is an Onitsha man of Krio descent. Onitsha just like Lagos was divided those days. You had the 'Enu Onitsha'-Inland Town, where the Onitsha natives lived and still live. 'Otu Onitsha' was mainly where the Krios and other non-onitsha Igbos settled. The fact that the Main Market is in 'Otu Onitsha' was due to the presence of the early Krios in Onitsha. The Krios in onitsha then were mainly merchants and traders in what we know today as the biggest market in West Africa- the Onitsha Main Market.

deenee: @ Ajo M, apologies for the delayed response. Somehow, your question just fell through the "cracks". Yes, I am certain that you will be able to get the data you have stated herein. There is however a "caveat", if you intend to make use of the Bloomberg terminals at the universities around you. The kind of information you will have access to will be largely determined by the subscription package paid for. There are some that would pay for country specific, sector specific, transaction specific information so you might want to consider this. But over all, the aforementioned firms should be able to provide the data you need. The can also offer you bespoke services tailored to meet the data requirements you want. The MPR articles relate to the bond aspect of the project as it is through this that the CBN sets interest rates which have a bearing on the movement of bond prices and other related factors. All the best!
@deenee Thanks pal for the generous info.... I am yet to check out the Bloomberg Terminal at a local college around me. Kinda of busy and on the road with other stuffs.... I really don't know about this MPR thing. All I need from the bond side of things are just the interest rates for say a 3-month or 1-year Nigerian govt. bond or their closing prices-and I will work out the interest rates therein. I do not wanna do anything fanciful. Just simple application of mean-variance theorem(asset allocation). Thus with closing daily prices-adjusted or not-of stocks and bonds, I should be able to work out any other statistic as the need arises without any fuss.

Again, I will let you know if I succeed with the Bloomberg Terminal. I may well need assistance with the NSE password if otherwise. Thanks once more.

tanimola22: As you are not in Nigeria, the advice given by @Deenee is on point. Meanwhile, it is better for you or your student to speak to the librarian at your university or his/her university. Most schools have access to Bloomberg data. I don't know your pocket, but if 1500USD/month sounds trivial to you, then you can sign up with Bloomberg to gain personal access to the requisite data and even more. Datastream costs around half of the cost of Bloomberg per month. Thomas Reuters and Datamonitor should cost around (800USD, 1500USD)/ month. I am not too sure though. I gave you the NSE option because it is way cheaper.

Anyway, you may send me an email. I will then send you someone's email. The dude has ran to oil and gas, but I guess he should still have the NSE password. I am not sure though. Better still, as already suggested, you could speak to a stockbroker if you have one.

If you choose the route of contacting me, then the subject of your message should be Markowitz Portfolio Theory.

T22.
Thanks once more... I will try the Bloomberg route. I should have access to it through some Unis around me. Hopefully, I will do that tomorrow. I never really thought I could access daily closing prices of Nigerian companies trading in Nigerian stock market there. I never checked either. I normally use Yahoo finance and couldn't get Nigerian companies there. Anyways, thanks for assisting. I hope I will succeed with Bloomberg et al, otherwise I will get back to you asap.
CareerRe: Corporate Finance/Investment Bankers/Stockbrokers Forum by AjoMmuo: 5:45pm On Jun 03, 2012
deenee: @ Ajo Mmuo try bloomberg, datastream, thomson reuters and datamonitor. These firms compile data periodically and I am certain that you will be able to get the information you require from them at an affordable cost. You can also get some relevant information from the MPR articles up loaded on the CBN website. You may also speak to a registered stock broker and dealing member of the NSE if you still require any info from them. One down side though with NSE data is that they don't update it regularly. All the best.
@deenee thanks for your time but are you by the above saying that I can access daily closing prices of say Cadbury Nigeria or Zenith Bank on Bloomberg as traded in Nigerian Stock Market for say the last 10 or 5 years? Sorry, I do not know what relevant information that I can get from the MPR articles on the CBN website. You care to explain further? Aside the stock closing prices, I do need access to Nigerian govt. bond daily closing prices. Can I get these on Bloomberg or the other websites you mentioned too? I should have access to Bloomberg where I am. I would check it out tomorrow-Jun 4th-through some Unis around me.

tanimola22: I advice you to hook up with an analyst who has NSE data password. You should get the stock info you need from the NSE website if you can get the password. I can't remember the password I used to use again.

@tanimola22 thanks for responding.... I do not know anyone with NSE password and I am currently not in Nigeria. Can you assist further please?
CareerRe: Corporate Finance/Investment Bankers/Stockbrokers Forum by AjoMmuo: 1:42am On Jun 03, 2012
Ok, here we go. I am thinking of helping an undergraduate student in Nigeria with her project. We plan to investigate Modern Portfolio Theory using portfolio of riskless and risky assets-stocks and bonds. My issue is this. Is there a website where I can download daily stock prices of major listed companies in Nigerian Stock Market by industries. Access to Nigerian government bond historical data is equally important to me-not that Nigerian govt bond is any where near riskless but will try to work with it(it is actually junk status).

Please anybody that knows where I can get this info should help. For companies in USA, yahoo finance will do and the treasury data I can get also. It will be interesting to compare investment in the same industries in Nigeria and USA using ideas from Modern Portfolio Theory. Most of the codes will be done in R. Thanks.
PoliticsRe: So They Never Really Loved MKO by AjoMmuo: 11:23pm On May 30, 2012
I have read through most of the argument for and against the renaming of UNILAG.... Someone did go through the trouble of stratifying the debaters, though I believe there are more groups to be included. That said, there is just one constant theme running through the various groupings: Self-interest. Some prefer the new name, others do not. UNILAG is a federal university and if the President has the power and the backing of the law of the land to rename it then his action is legal. But I am not sure about the legality of this action. I leave that to the experts in the field.

But having legal backing does not mean it is the right thing to do. Thus, my personal preference will be to let UNILAG be UNILAG and name another monument to immortalize MKO. Like someone pointed out, name one of the new six Federal Universities after MKO; that is if it has to be a university named after him-it doesn't have to be though. Remember this is my preference. GEJ thought otherwise and we can disagree with him respectfully. This whole idea of hurling insults at the President at any given opportunity is not the best way to register our collective disenchantment with his style. Maybe, he failed to consult widely before renaming UNILAG. Maybe, he played politics with it. Maybe, he had good intention-good intention could have unintended consequence. Be that as it may, if you disagree with the President because you believe it is illegal and/or unconstitutional challenge this pronouncement in a law court. If it is within his power to rename federal institutions and you disagree based on your preferences, you are within your rights to demonstrate peacefully and pile pressure on the federal government to rescind this pronouncement in a respectful and peaceful manner. Do remember this is only your preference.

If the majority of the people prefer UNILAG to MAU, and register that much peacefully, a listening government will reverse itself....
EducationRe: Jonathan: 60% Of Varsity Dons Without Ph.D by AjoMmuo: 9:50pm On May 25, 2012
Nigerians have gotten use to bashing GEJ that most people insult him without really understanding the issue at hand. There is nothing wrong in creating an incentive for smart and able Nigerians to pursue studies at the doctoral level. No where in the body of the article did it say that PhDs are better teachers or not. We need more and smart PhDs in most fields of endeavor in Nigeria. You cannot have sustainable technology and innovation without scientific and technological culture. Who sustains and fosters this culture? Researchers in leading frontiers of knowledge of course. At least to play here and acquire the culture you need the rigor of a PhD research. Nothing wrong with increasing the stock of our human capital

Reading what most people wrote above, I think most are confused about who and what a PhD is. Mathematics for example is far more than calculus. Physics is more than Newton's Law and Einstein's relativity theories. Equally, economics is way beyond demand and supply models. Nigeria is a country of 160 Million people and only 100 people will get scholarship from our Federal Govt. to pursue doctoral studies abroad and people are even debating whether it is our most pressing problem or not. And why should it not be our problem?

@ekt_bear, I always like to read from you. You have a nice way of putting things in perspective without making categorical statements and assertions. I can tell you are a scientist and/or a mathematician and it shows. What's your doctoral study area of research? I hope you don't mind me asking?

PoliticsRe: Nigerian States And Zones Ranked By Igr by AjoMmuo: 8:15pm On Nov 09, 2011
Areosapien:
Nope. Actually, that's far from it, because poverty and wealth are actually measured using the PPP - which considers the GDP and the population density. For example, Nigeria has a much higher GDP than Botswana ($377bn to $36bn), the standard of living in Botswana is higher with a PPP of $14,000 while Nigeria has a poor $2,500 - ultimately meaning Botswana is actually richer than Nigeria, because their little population makes wealth circulation much easier.
Now, coming down to Kano, even with their population over 6 times that of Imo, the number produced by this northern state is unfortunately nothing to write home about, ultimately signifying that the standard of living in Imo is quite possibly far better than Kano.

Also checking out the other northern states like Jigawa, Niger, you'd see there's no basis for comparison on this one.
The SE with its 5 states (as opposed to the 6 apiece in the cases of the NE and NW), still comes neck in neck against those states. Mehn, there's no basis for comparison. Any economist would tell you this.
Calm down, You are swinging from all sides, Did you read what I wrote carefully. I did state that other economic indices can be used to adjudge a state rich or poor. However, based on the figures in the spreadsheet, SE is the "poorest" region.  Figures speak for themselves. Whether or not the figures are real I can't say, I assumed they are correct, And I was only fleshing out what the skeletal figure is conveying. Don't feel bad. You may be right, per capita, SE may well be richer than some regions but that I can't delve into without figures,
PoliticsRe: Nigerian States And Zones Ranked By Igr by AjoMmuo: 12:57pm On Nov 09, 2011
Interesting!!! Based on this aggregate revenue index, SE is the poorest region in Nigeria. On the one hand, that is understandable. Lots of small and medium scale private firms meaning less government. On the other hand, the region gets the least from FAAC with two oil producing states in the region-Imo and Abia. Oh well good politics is never good economics,

There are other indices that could be used to measure the economic well being of a region this is just one of them and the revelation is an eye opener for me,

Has d last 3 Northern Ministers been Phd holders, why are we raising d bar when it comes to an Awolowo. I have always said it that name has brought more harm than good to d Gentleman in question, imagine d threshold some people are laying for poor boy, na wa ho undecided
Nobody is raising the bar on anybody. I pointed that out to show that he may not be the most qualified in FCTA to be made a minister of FCT. Let it be on merit.

Yes, you are right. None of the last 3 northern past ministers had a PhD. My use of PhD again was figurative do not take it otherwise. We are all against people getting rewarded with positions because of where they come from or who they are. You can't be selective on this. I am pretty sure Segun wouldn't want to be made a minister just because his Awolowo's grandchild. If he knows his worth and what he can offer, I am confident he would rather get it because he is Segun who happens to be Awolowo's grandchild.
PoliticsRe: Compensate Awo By Giving Fcta Ministerial Appointment To Segun Awolowo by AjoMmuo: 7:12pm On Jun 13, 2011
@Knowall, your argument is flawed big time. You made this whole 'independent' suggestion/s based on the name Awolowo, pure and simple. You may not accept it but it is true. Segun Awolowo, according to you, has worked at the FCTA for only 6 years. And yet you are suggesting he be made a cabinet minister. If he is not an Awolowo, would you have made that suggestion? I am sure there are a lot of other unknown surnames who have PhDs and have worked there for more than 20 years. What would you suggest we make them?

Just, back down. You got it wrong this time,

@Ezeuche you stated and I quote "The only Igbo groups that really had interactions with the Europeans were my own group, the Aro Igbo. But we still have our Igbo names".  I do not know the time frame you had in mind when you made this assertion. Slave trade era? Nevertheless, that assertion is not entirely correct. What of Onitsha and Niger River bank? We all agree on the huge influence of the early catholic missionaries in Eastern Nigeria. Do you know the hub of catholicism in eastern Nigerian? Where do you have the only minor basilica in Nigeria? The answer is Onitsha not Arochukwu. Holy Trinity Cathedral Onitsha it is.  Maybe a little history of the early catholic missionaries in eastern Nigeria will help you realize that Onitsha had early interactions with Europeans.

Yes, we still have Krios in Onitsha but they are well integrated now. @ Op, I seriously believe that monkeyleg was more rational than most of the other guys here. YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR HUSBAND and live with the consequences of your infidelity, pure and simple. I am not judging you and  truly I will forgive my wife or girlfriend if she truly confesses to me and departs from her infidelity.

Note, by not telling him, you are deciding for him. Tell him and if he chooses to forgive and remain married then that would be his choice not yours. He confessed to you and you have decided to forgive him and stay married to him. Give him the same option. Have you ever heard of information asymmetry? Whenever you withhold vital information from your spouse or anybody for that matter, you are making a decision for them. If you want your hubby back and your family together, give the guy updated info and live with whatever comes out it. That is a sincere and  honorable thing to do. In any case, if you do not confess to him, you have a higher predilection to fall back into the hands of your eagerly awaiting lover boy.
