In response to the increasing pace of degradation of the environment in the South-east region, the Federal Government yesterday said it had awarded contacts worth N11.5 billion for projects aimed at addressing ecological problems facing the states in the geo-political zone.

This was made known by the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Ibukun Odusote, during the flag off of 11 ecological projects in the South-east and handing over of projects’ documents to executing agencies, project consultants and contractors.

He cautioned the contractors on the quality of jobs to be executed, saying: “It is important to state that for erosion and flood control projects, time is of essence as they are time-bound.”

She likewise stated that the projects had to do with gully erosion control, soil and flood control, with Abia having three projects; Anambra, five projects; Ebonyi one project; Enugu, three projects; and Imo State, three projects, giving a total of 15 projects, 11 of which were last Tuesday.

Odusote explained that the project was a demonstration of the administration’s concern in alleviating the problems associated with erosion and flood disasters in South-east geo-political zone.

“All stakeholders should therefore see this occasion as an important and crucial one as it is life-saving with regards to socio-economic development of our nation,” she said.

On the time frame for the completion of the job, she said: “All stakeholders are advised to work assiduously and conscientiously with time to achieve the target dates of completion of projects. On our part, we assure you enhanced speedy processing of payment certificates to avoid delay and unnecessary request for extension of time.

“I also want to make it categorically clear that the era of undue delays in project execution and requests for frivolous extension of time of completion would no longer be tolerated. Project consultants must, therefore be up and doing in sending their monthly progress reports to my office on regular monthly basis.”

The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution to immortalise the Lady of songs Christy Essien-Igbokwe for her contributions to the music and motion picture industry.
Kenechukwu Chukwuemeka representing Awka South 1 Constituency moved the motion on the floor of the house at its plenary on Tuesday in Awka. The motion was unanimously supported by other members.
“As a way to reward hard work and also immortalise her, I move that a street or road or alley be named after her in the state capital,” he said.
Seconding the motion, Hon.Tony oneweek Muonagor representing Idemili North Constituency recalled how the late Essien-Igbokwe thrilled Nigerians when she acted the role of Akpena in the television series, ‘The Masquerade.'
